Zzafrika
Review: The musical juggernauts that respond the respective calls of 'Tiga' and 'Zombie Nation' converge as ZZT for new single "ZZafrika". It's pure peak time goodness, with a driving, almost squealing synth line augmented by a chunky electro beat, which is topped off with an infectious vocal snippet reminiscent of their 2008 smash "The Worm". Already tried and test by the big boys - this is hot hot hot.

Vulkan Alarm!
Vulkan Alarm! (Proxy remix)
Vulkan Alarm! (Jan Driver remix)
Review: Whilst Turbo have demonstrated a willingness to think outside the box in recent times (most notably a Murphy Jax release that featured Populette and Freak Seven remixes) this ZZT release will no doubt please fans of the label's trademark sound. "Vulkan Sound" is every bit as abrasive as you'd expect from Tiga and Florian, craftily building from a scratchy groove into the kind of ever twisting tunnel of white noise that sends the Friday night Fabric crowd crazy. Check the flip for the requisite remixes, with Turbo's resident Russian speaker worrier Proxy borrowing rhythmic ideas from an under appreciated Felix Da Housecat jam amidst the usual array of crescendo building synth madness. Joining him is BNR's Jan Driver, whose remix will please fans of tracks that begin in the lower recesses of the speakers and dig up all the dirt as they reach stereo parity in sync with massive 808 kicks and thumping bass - this one is our pick.

City Of Angels (4:02)
Review: Dam Funk is the true ambassador of West Coast boogie in the modern era, and his dreamy touch is unmistakable. Parisian funkateer David Zylberman knows what's up, and so he's reached out to Dam for some input on this silky smooth single which takes us into the heart of LA. The result is two cuts tipped way, way back for the smoothest of rides, all mid tempo 808 groove and lingering, mellow synth chords. If you were a fan of the breakthrough Toeachizown album which brought Dam Funk to wider attention, you're going to love this record.

Review: The Aqualung Series division of Clone Records has been at the top of the reissuing game in the last few years, dropping bomb after bomb by Drexciya and their various sattelite projects. Paranormale Aktivitat is something a little more recent, however; it was originally released on Rephlex back in 2011 and it's made up of the combined talents of Drexciya's Heinrich Mueller, Susana Correia, Penelope Martin, and Beta Evers. Deep, sullen electro would be the best way to encapsulate its murky stratosphere, but the album goes way beyond the normal confines of the genre and frequently heads into the utter unknown, the underbelly of experimental dance music. The air is thick and the sounds are tenebrous, so tread lightly but be sure to know that it's an unmissable and timeless album for those who know.

Sandy Eyes (5:45)
Polar Magazine (3:09)
Flucht '84 (5:27)
Sacred Time (5:08)
Review: Zwischenfall were a short lived Belgian trio comprised of Martin Urban, Michael Sass & Stephan Kraemer and who only had two releases: the Heute EP in 1983 and of course Sandy Eyes (1984) that now gets a re-issue on Josh Cheon's always reliable Dark Entries. The title track is sweet, disco infused synth-pop (and definitely a spirit of the time) while "Flucht 84" takes it cues from Moroder or Gino Soccio on this fabulous cosmic disco journey. On the flip are two bonus tracks: "Sacred Time" injects a bit more EBM attitude into it while "Polar Magazine" gets more funky and that keyboard brass section is a nice touch. Fans of the label will find this a welcome addition to the catalogue.

Space Zone (6:36)

Restriction (7:09)
Trapid (6:49)
Review: Zwen makes a strong impression as they circumnavigate the stars to impart their strain of machine music. This first release on Trapid has little to no reference point, placing all the focus on the tunes contained within. "Space Zone" aptly launches this mission in a muscular fashion with a hefty kick and some strafing synth blasts, while "Etching" gets tangled up in a more tightly wound loop with a raw, deliciously early 90s finish. "Restriction" keeps things stripped back, but it's certainly still orbiting the same quadrant as the other tracks. "Trapid" switches focus by embracing a more dub techno-informed approach, and Zwen does a masterful job of capturing that vibe too.

Manipulate Our Reflections (Relic remix) (7:12)
Review: Having impressed with his 2019 debut album on Negentropy, the breaks/tech-house/minimal techno fusion of Rhythm Tension, Zweizig has been given a chance to showcase his wares on Constant Sound's popular Constant Black offshoot. The headline attraction is undoubtedly opener 'Manipulate Our Reflections', a spaced-out chunk of hypnotic late-night science that wraps wonky, Villalobos style electronic noises and pulsing pads around a locked in (but also surprisingly swinging) tech-house groove. Relic provides a chunkier and groovier remix that boasts darker noises and a more beefed-up sound, while bonus cut 'Vvoid' is a twisted, undulating acid-jacker.

Review: Brawther's Negentropy label has already carried gold star material from Ron Obvious and the man himself, and now it's the turn of debutant producer Zweizig to show off his wares. This assured 12" leads in with the ambient intro "Gewissen" before the crisp minimal funk of "Rhythm Tension" kicks in with its shimmering and shuddering sound design pinging around the dexterous beat. "Zephyr" is a smoky affair with a snappy broken beat and lots of subtle organic matter writhing in the middle distance. "Rehash Repeat" takes things deep and dubby to complete the set, all mellow hiccupping rhythm accents and hazy melodic phrases.

Song IV (Quintet)
Review: This year's Record Store Day has been nothing short of sensational, with countless gems from the past having been made available once again, but this morbidly sough-after collaboration between Peter Zummo and Arthur Russell will have die-hard fans of both artists salivating manically. In all honesty, it is an outstanding piece of music and one which fully deserved an official reissue. This forward-thinking pair of artists were so ahead of the game back in the 80's that it's impossible to think how people reacted to this stuff back then. The opener, "Sci-Fi" is their familiar bundle of horns, delays and violins, all blended together with Russell's vocal laments, whereas "Slow Heart" heads into deeper, more rhythmic territories. On the flip, "Song VI" is a mesmerising battle between xylophones, marching shreds of percussion and extravagantly-timed delay shots, while the Quintet version drops in a much-welcomed dose of Russell's goofy lyricism. Not to be missed.

Review: A couple of years back, Optimo Music reissued a classic chunk of NYC downtown experimentation from Peter Zummo, a post-modern composer arguably best known for his work with Arthur Russell. Thrillingly, this follow-up marks the multi-instrumentalist's first new album for many years. Full of his delay-laden trumpet lines, tumbling trombone, and spaced-out beats, Dress Code (Don't Look At My Car) feels like the products of an unlikely collaboration between Holgar Czukay, Konk and the Idjut Boys. It's all devilishly hard to pin down, but never less than inspired, with Zummo serving up both downtempo and upbeat compositions in his unique, fusion style.

Review: Increasingly spoken of in hushed tones by the techno community, a new album from the Giegling collective will always be regarded as a big event. It's through the Forum offshoot that has previously delivered fine long players by Vril and Prince Of Denmark that Giegling now present Aufgang, a debut set from mystery production unit Zum Goldenen Schwarm. Previously spotted in fits and spurts, Aufgang represents the most substantial statement from Zum Goldenen Schwarm yet and it's eight tracks of strange atmospheric pieces and immersive deep electronics already feel like another classic Giegling long player. How the title track develops over it's three parts to a quite epic 15 minute finale is particularly satisfying to hear.

Review: The fertile South African house scene keeps on giving rise to brand new goodness. Token is a label whose mission it is to bring such sounds to the wider world and this second EP is another winner. 'Stay' immediately gets you dreaming of warm climates and gorgeous sunsets before 'Set It' picks up the pace but keeps the pads warm and fuzzy and the bass elastic and deep. There is spiritual vocal faire on the cosy 'A Winters Night' and a melodic masterclass on 'The World Order' that is steeped in US house tradition but brings something fresh.

Review: Zulu Men hail from New Orelans and bring plenty of that famous musical city's history to their work. The southwest of Louisiana has birthed greats like Dr. John, Allen Toussaint and Trombone Shorty, all of whom loom large over this new 45. Both sides of the record brim and bristle with big horns, live percussion and shuffling drums that come with dancing keys that will get you up on your toes as the parade rolls by. The B-side houses a cover of one of the legendary Toussaint's biggest hits, "Sweet Touch Of Love".
