Review: Are there many mixes as seminal as this one? When Soulwax adopted their 2 Many DJs alias for the landmark As Heard On Radio Soulwax series, they heralded a new era of genre-hopping, headsy blending that was fun and fearless in equal measure. It's absolutely of its time, capturing the electroclash zeitgeist and throwing in crowd-pleasing pop nous without diluting the product, and quite simply Pt 2 is one of the best party sets you're ever likely to hear. Released in 2002 and sounding as fresh and inspired as it did 20 years ago, this is an essential item for anyone who takes the art of the mash-up seriously.

Review: Well over one billion streams, sold out concerts across the globe, and five full-length albums later, 2Cellos deliver what may be their most populist effort to date. Certainly no bad thing, the classical world is packed with fine examples of instrumental masters reworking number one smash hits, from Kronos Quartet to The Heritage Orchestra, and in all honestly Dedicated can hold its own. Opting to recreate rather than rethink, tracks from platinum-selling acts like Bon Jovi, Guns n' Roses, Beyonce, and Simone & Garfunkel all feature, at least some of which pack more emotional resonance and power than their originals. Having said that, we've always been suckers for the fundamentally mournful, or at least reflective qualities of the cello. And don't even get us started on the double bass.

The 5 Seconds of Summer (10th Anniversary Edition) is a nostalgic celebration of the band's pop-rock origins, the infectious melodies and energetic rock vibes that marked their rise to fame. Featuring classic hits like 'She Looks So Perfect' and 'Amnesia', the latter showcasing their versatility with its stripped-down acoustic sound, while deeper cuts like 'Voodoo Doll' and 'End Up Here' remind listeners of the band's growth over the years. 'Kiss Me, Kiss Me' stands out with its infectious energy and the live arrangements add an extra layer of excitement to the song's performances. This anniversary edition not only revisits the chart-topping hits but also reminds listeners of the enduring quality of the entire album. This album became the soundtrack of countless lives, particularly during the mid-2010s and this picture disc is a great added touch to the package for fans.

Review: Early arrivals don cardboard masks of 5 Seconds of Summer, blown up to thrice their usual size. It's as close as many will get to the Aussie lads tonight, with dry ice and a low stage obscuring them from view. This visual absence, coupled with the venue's steamy atmosphere, creates a pop-punk rave vibe - fitting for 5SOS's pivot to arena-ready anthems on their debut. The set spans their evolution from YouTube covers to teen idols. Wildcard moments like the psychedelic 'Voodoo Doll' and acoustic 'Amnesia' punctuate the night, but new material dominates. Opener 'She Looks So Perfect' sets the tone, channelling Blink-182 for a new generation. 5SOS amplify their pop sensibilities: 'Don't Stop' drives a simple riff to emotional heights, while 'Good Girls' repurposes 80s power ballad synths into tear-stained pop-punk.Despite radio-friendly polish, 5SOS's shift to mainstream pop feels genuine. Their vocals transform them into heartthrob crooners on 'Kiss Me Kiss Me'. This pop pivot suits their songcraft, with melancholy no less affecting when paired with power chords and arms-aloft choruses.their yearning songcraft perfectly, the melancholy heart of 5 Seconds of Summer no less affecting when tethered to power chord orthodoxy and following the shortest laser-guided path to the arms-aloft chorus.

Review: a-ha's new studio album True North is the accompaniment to a new film of the same name that releases in cinemas in Autumn 2022. The original idea for it was for the band - a Norwegian trio made up of Morten Harket, Paul Waaktaar-Savoy and Magne Furuholmen - to record live just 90km above the Arctic Circle and film what they did. The nascent idea was expanded and the band was joined by the Norwegian orchestra known as Arctic Philharmonic. The resulting record is magnificent in size, sound and scope as it shows the band's vision of a collective connection to the environment. It is a love letter from a-ha, from within the Arctic Circle - "a poem from the far north of Norway," say the band.

Review: Acclaimed synthpop trio A-Ha are teasing their latest album, not to mention independent film, 'True North', in what might just be the band's most crowning career achievement thus far. Their first project since 2015's 'Cash In Steel', it's high time they reined in on their success to do some good; the album and project is a relentless paean for the frozen magnetic north, and its ecological importance in connecting us to the environment.

The collection's first disc features their iconic hits like 'Take on Me' and 'The Living Daylights,' spanning their career from upbeat synth-pop beginnings to the more orchestral tones of later works such as 'Under the Makeup.' Review: A-Ha's Foot of the Mountain, originally released in 2009 and now reissued on stunning crystal-clear vinyl, finds the Norwegian trio confidently blending their signature melancholy with lush synthesiser-driven arrangements. Often reflective and mature, the album bridges their 80s synth-pop roots with a sophisticated, contemporary sound that underscores their enduring artistry. Tracks like 'The Bandstand' and 'Riding the Crest' burst with vibrant analog synths reminiscent of Depeche Mode, while Morten Harket's unmistakable voice elevates every melody to transcendent heights. The title track, a rousing highlight, is rich with introspection and layered instrumentation, showcasing the band's knack for crafting timeless pop. 'Shadowside' and 'What There Is' delve into deeper emotional terrain, with themes of depression and longing delicately explored through soaring choruses and string-laden arrangements. Even with its wintry undertones, Foot of the Mountain radiates warmth through its craftsmanship and poignant lyricism. The elegant 'Sunny Mystery' and the atmospheric 'Mother Nature Goes to Heaven' further demonstrate the trio's ability to innovate while staying true to their sound.
This album has the quality and ability to impress old fans and gain new ones.

Review: Hunting High and Low, the 1985 debut album from A-ha, gets a reissue as a 6LP vinyl box set. Responsible for changing synthpop forever with their breakout 'Take On Me', the single's parent album here has been reissued numerous times, but this one aims to be the curtain call. With a whopping 64-page booklet detailing the band's origins thrown in on top of a mammoth four LPs, three of which contain a huge swath of unheard demos, B-sides and rarities, this is a cash-in on a much-beloved pop band we're sure will be eaten up.

Review: Here's a chance to cop a pivotal piece of R&B history on vinyl. Aaliyah's second album was released in 1996, when she was just 17, and she was already one of the most commanding artists in modern R&B. Working closely with Missy Elliot and Timbaland on a number of the tracks, she made a significant step on from her debut with a revitalised and forward-leaning sound, and all while finishing drama school and preparing to star in Romeo Must Die. One In A Million is solid gold start to finish, and given how costly original pressings of it can be on the second hand market, this reissue is long overdue so grab it while you can.

Review: ABBA's new compilation, The Singles: The First Fifty Years, revisits their storied career with a fresh twist, building on the foundation laid by their 1982 collection, The Singles: The First Ten Years. This updated anthology spans the group's entire career, incorporating hits from their early days as well as tracks from their acclaimed 2021 comeback album, Voyage. While the original The Singles: The First Ten Years was a definitive collection for fans, featuring tracks like 'The Day Before You Came' and 'Under Attack,' it only covered up to 1982. The new compilation expands significantly, adding ten additional tracks not included in the previous release. These include early gems like 'People Need Love' and 'He Is Your Brother,' alongside classic hits such as 'Eagle' and the much appreciated 'Lay All Your Love On Me.' The 38-track compilation on vinyl is housed in a beautifully designed soft cover with floating vinyl pockets and a 24-page booklet filled with new liner notes and previously unseen band images. The collection seamlessly blends ABBA's golden era with their recent resurgence, offering a comprehensive and visually stunning tribute to their enduring legacy.

Review: Swedish pop legends ABBA seem to be as talked about these days as ever, largely down to the fact that the holographic stage show proved such a huge success with all those who continue to pack it out in the capital. They were very much at the peak of their powers back in 1981 when The Visitors, their eighth studio album, arrived. It actually saw the group move away from their super light and airy and catchy pop of previous works and enter more mature and complex musical worlds. The fact that Benny and Frida had recently split up coloured some of the tunes such as 'When All Is Said And Done' and even topical Cold War themes were explored.

Review: To the delight of the 80s synth-pop faithful holding on to the decade prior, Martin Fry revived ABC in 1997 after a five-year hiatus. It's noticeable that Fry wasn't interested in repeating old tricks though, as he took the band in a new direction alongside Heaven 17's Glenn Gregory without losing that keen sense of songwriting magic that made ABC so popular the first time around. Loaded with emotionally charged reflections on life, the universe and everything, this is a welcome pressing on blue and white marble vinyl which is limited to 1000 copies.

Review: This is a deluxe reissue of a real pop classic from back in 1997. ABC is a group that traces its origins back to Vice Versa, a Sheffield band formed in 1977 by Stephen Singleton and Mark White. They released the Music 4 EP after founding Neutron Records and Martin Fry, creator of the fanzine Modern Drugs, interviewed Vice Versa before later joining as synth player. By 1980, the band transformed into ABC, with Fry assuming lead vocals. The lineup included Fry, Glenn Gregory of Heaven 17, and Keith Lowndes. Though their debut album received acclaim from critics, it didn't achieve widespread commercial success. Despite this, ABC's fusion of pop and electronic elements laid the groundwork for their future iconic sound.

Review: Gracie Abrams' new single 'Risk from her upcoming album The Secret Of Us displays her continued evolution as an artist. Known for her connections to Aaron Dessner and Taylor Swift, Abrams is now infusing her indie pop sound with touches of the rootsy style popularized by artists like Noah Kahan and Zach Bryan. Co-written with Audrey Hobert and produced by Dessner, 'Risk' features Abrams' signature trembling vocals and glassy soundscapes, paired with frank, conversational lyrics. The song captures the intensity of a crush that feels like a breakup. The accompanying video, directed by Hobert, is a standout, showing Abrams in a more playful light. Expect this album to do well in the pop charts and on radio with her mainstream direction.

Building on the success of her debut, Gracie delivers her most expansive work yet, both sonically and narratively. Teaming up with longtime collaborator Aaron Dessner and best friend Audrey Hobert, Gracie infuses each track with urgency and emotion, drawing from her live experiences over the past year. The result is a collection of songs that feels deeply personal and authentic, capturing the essence of shared moments and intimate conversations. From start to finish, The Secret of Us is a arresting listen that highlights Gracie's evolution as an artist and leaves you eagerly anticipating what she'll do next.

Review: Now announcing her latest album 30, it's been Adele's longest ever hiatus between albums. Biting back at media hype earlier this year, our worries that 30 would be a "drum and bass record to spite you", in Adele's own words, have been assuaged; its lead single 'Easy On Me' is rather a dramatic, roomy, noir piano ballad. And now that the tracklist has been revealed, we can expect more of the same - belting emotion is, of course, what Adele does best. Watch out for interluding and ending collabs with Erroll Garner and Chris Stapleton, as well as the intimately titled 'I Drink Wine'.

Review: Already the winner of a Brit Award (Adele was voted the 'Critics Choice' - the most exciting new British artist expected to 'make it big' in 2008),
'19' is Adele's debut album. Citing influences as diverse as Etta James, Jill Scott, Bjork, Dusty Springfield, Billy Bragg, Billie Holiday, Jeff Buckley,
The Cure and Peggy Lee, Adele also recently completed her first solo UK tour, having toured previously with the likes of Jack Penate, Jamie T,
Raul Midon, Amos Lee and Devendra Banhart. '19' contains both her debut track 'Hometown Glory' and her smash single 'Chasing Pavements'.
Blues tinged and melancholic, Adele describes 'Chasing Pavements' as 'It's me being hopeful for a relationship that's very much over. The sort
of relationship you hate when you're in it, but miss when you're not'. A hymn to lost love and regret, 'Chasing Pavements' follows Adele's first
limited edition single 'Hometown Glory', which introduced her to the world to much critical acclaim, with NME calling it 'totally, absolutely beautiful',
Q Magazine calling her 'The voice of next year' and The Sunday Times saying 'A Star Is Born'

Review: For those who remember, focus-grouped supergroup Alcazar made a barrage of infectious europop and trance tracks through the late '90s through to the early noughties, becoming one of Sweden's most internationally successful pop groups. 'Casino' compiled their greatest hits on CD format at the time - including 'Transmetropolis', a Haddaway-sampling slice of robotic fun, and their first single 'Shine On', an equally kitsch new age trip hop ballad showing off the trio's high-end vision of sonic urbanity. Now released on limited, 1000-strong magenta vinyl for the first time, this edition includes secret inscriptions on the run-out groove.

Review: Even reading the words All Saints takes us back to simmer times, when pop music seemed far more innocent and pop stars - the female ones at least - wore far more clothes. The British group's self-titled debut album was cooler and smarter than many of their candied peers (Spice Girls, we're looking at you) and blended effortlessly soulful vocals with rich, atmospheric production. From start to finish, the album lays down emotionally charged and honest lyrics. The production is lush yet minimal, allowing the powerful vocals to take centre stage, with classics like 'Never Ever', 'I Know Where It's At' and 'Lady Marmalade ('98 remix)' all still oozing a nice new soul and r&b edge.

Review: Marc Almond's I'm Not Anyone sees the iconic singer revisiting his roots with a covers album imbued with personal reflection and emotional depth. Following the swirl of projects including Soft Cell's reunion and his joint venture with Jools Holland, Almond retreats to the tranquility of the Portuguese countryside, finding solace in nature and inspiration from his record collection. Collaborating again with Mike Stevens, Almond interprets classics from Neil Diamond, King Crimson, Don McLean, and more, focusing on songs from his childhood that evoke deep emotions. Almond describes the album as having an underlying spirituality, a nod to his fascination with Druid and Pagan themes, finding comfort in the natural world amidst contemporary chaos. Tracks like 'Elusive Butterfly' and 'I Talk To the Wind' (featuring Ian Anderson) showcase his ability to inject familiar songs with his unique dramatic flair. With contributions from artists like Bryan Chambers and Louise Marshall, I'm Not Anyone promises to be a lush, introspective journey, capturing the mystery, wonder, and sweetness that define Almond's artistic spirit. Fans can expect a heartfelt, evocative exploration of timeless pop standards.

They somewhat succeed, too, as the long player reached the Top 20 in five different countries around Europe and spend the big hits 'Dance With Me,' 'Universal Daddy' and 'Jerusalem'. Now, for the first time ever, the record is repressed under the supervision of founding members Marian Gold and Bernhard Lloyd. Review: The Breathtaking Blue was very much the difficult third from Alphaville. Garnering props and mainstream success for their massive pop debut, Forever Young (which held smash singles in the still-famous title track and 'Big In Japan') the curious New Romantic-goth-pop stars stumbled with the follow up, Afternoons In Utopia, meaning by the time this one arrived the fickle and fast moving music scene had moved on. Their loss.

While not quite the genre defining hidden gem, LP three comes with some very serious contenders for career highlights. 'She Fades Away' takes us on a swaggered, almost Western feeling ride through dark synth pop, 'The Mysteries of Love' could be a forgotten A-Ha or Tiers For Fears demo, while 'Heaven or Hell' brings croonerism and jazz to the table.

Review: Mayra Andrade's live album, recorded at Union Chapel, features the warmth and eclecticism of her music in an intimate setting. Known for blending Cape Verdean Creole, English, and Portuguese in her songs, she pulls from a variety of cultural influences to craft a sound that's truly global. Her live collaboration with guitarist Djodje Almeida, 'reEncanto,' takes listeners on a journey through her discographyifrom Navega (2006) to Manga (2019).Andrade's music dances between traditional Cape Verdean rhythms and contemporary beats, with touches of reggae, African soul and pop influences, making every performance feel both rooted and adventurous. Her voice, full of depth and color, effortlessly shifts between romantic ballads and playful, rhythmic tunes. A nomadic spirit is evident in her music as she reflects her life's experiences and travels. On stage, Andrade is stunning, and the energy she brings in this live recording transports listeners straight to Cape Verde's sun-drenched shores. For those unfamiliar with her work, this album is an ideal introduction to the vibrant, evolving world she's built through her music, full of passion and heartfelt storytelling.

Review: For Life Entertainment do well to rerelease yet another bunch of greats from a classic artist working in the Japanese genre of city pop. Along with her album Heaven Beach, Timely!! comes as an LP reissue of the 1983 original album. It's a propulsive jet-setter in the realm of honest 80s J-funk, backed up by weighty production, dynamically swung horn sections and prominent slap bass stylings. Toshiki Kadomatsu's production neatly backs up ANRI's incredible vocal range and dexterity, and without him, perhaps we wouldn't be blessed with the present-day microgrenre that is future funk.

Review: In around 2013, artists like Yung Bae pioneered the genre of future funk, which took elements from early Japanese city pop and funk from the 1980s, and turned it into hyper-compressed, dull and nostalgic explosions of sampledelic sound. But in turn, it reinvigorated interest in the particular brand of city pop that had been sampled - and those already in the know about it will know it was already danceable and driving enough. ANRI, the singer hailing from Kanagawa, was a central artist in this early J-pop sound, and unwittingly paved the way for this decades-to-come cultural routing. Funky live horns, dynamic vocal jumps and an optimistic feel cut across her 1982 opus Heaven Beach - a more laid-back and relaxed album compared to her other projects, and only her fourth. Emblematic of the Sino-nostalgia that has taken the vaporwave and future funk community by storm, it was one of her four earliest albums to be released with the timeless Japanese music trademark - the obi-strip.

Review: Japanese popstar Anri continues to hear her entire back catalogue reissued - this time we home back in on Bi Ki Ni, her mid-career (1983) city pop opus, which laser-focuses on the romantic tropes of sunsets, beachside flings, and heartfelt goodbyes over cocktails in flight lounges. The coalescing of jazz, funk and disco meshes neatly as Anri glides tightly over each ultra-slick instrumental, with the aptly named 'Good Bye Boogie Dance' being a particularly neat highlight.

Review: Japanese city-pop starlet Anri was a fixture of the late 1970s to early 80s, and renewed interest in her work has sparked something of a reissues incentive. Now her 1984, early-to-mid career album Coool sees a reissue via For Life alongside Bi Ki Ni, and further hammers home her romantic vision in disco. Unlike the aforementioned album, Coool is slightly more electronic and dancey, and meditates more on appreciating nature than romance, with standout track 'Gone With The Sadness' reflecting Anri's experience of getting away from the city and leaving the sadness that comes with urbanity by the door.

Review: Right, OK, where do we start on this one? There is no point in trying to come up with some pseudo-academic wordsmithery about the cultural contribution that Swedish pop band Aqua made to the musical world. But nor can we slay these sounds either, though, because for a short while they were everywhere and lapped up by everyone. The charm of the Euro-dace was in its nativity, its silliness, its innocence, but also the deceptive simplicity of the MIDI beats and catchy vocal choruses. Hard to believe this one is 25 years old but it is, and it is now available on wax once more.

Review: Aquilo started out on Island Records in 2017 with their debut album Silhouettes, and they quickly followed that up with the similarly atmospheric ii. After that initial rush, the gentle songsmiths have taken a few years out before returning with A Safe Place To Be. In that time, they've been patient in developing their core sound, and blue-eyed balladry is very much still the core tenet of their sound. Subtly ornamenting tracks like 'Our Bones Turn To Stone' with electronic pulses while keeping their vocal harmonies and piano playing at the forefront, it's a mature and considered album which should keep existing fans very happy indeed.

Anchored by the powerful 'Chains,' the album re-established Arena as a force in contemporary music, earning her five ARIA Awards, including Album of the Year. With six singles and a legacy of ten times Platinum status, it's no surprise the album continues to stand the test of time. Now, 30 years on, Arena's emotional connection to the music remains as strong as ever, with a national tour set to mark this iconic anniversary.

Each track blends thoughtful lyrics with her signature melodic style and there's a refreshing mix of full-band arrangements and stripped-back instrumentals. Her guitar work stands out, adding a raw edge to the songs, while her lyrics explore personal reflections and universal themes, as always with honesty and depth. It's a release that reaffirms her place as a long-time favourite, offering both a nod to her past and a new chapter in her musical journey.

Review: Asake doubles down for his second album in quick succession after making such an impact with his debut, Mr. Money With The Vibe. Singing in Yoruba and English alike, the Nigerian singer keeps up the exuberant energy of his first record and delivers an album to put some spring in your step. The tempo is up and the mood is summery as Asake presents his vision of the continued tradition of West African music, capitalising on the recipe which made him such a rapidly rising sensation in the first place. Bursting with ideas and hooks aplenty, this is another sure sign of Asake's ascension as one of the most prominent Nigerian artists doing it right now.

Review: The third studio album by the Nigerian artist Asake comes to vinyl through Empire, homing back in for a second time on the artist's pioneering flurry of several modish, "now" genre fusions for 2024. Asake has already garnered a name for himself as a neo-fuji artist, building on the classic Nigerian Yoruba dance genre in electronica fusion form, as well as incorporating elements of amapiano and funk. Lungu Boy was met with critical acclaim on its digital release, and now you can hear it in its fullest physical quality on marbled vinyl; the record's best moments have to be 'Worldwide' and 'Suru' featuring none other than British rap whiz Stormzy.

Review: Mr. Money With The Vibe is the debut studio album from Nigerian singer Asake. Following an impressive debut and meteoric rise in the music industry, Asake signed with YBNL Nation, the label founded by one of the godfathers of modern Afrobeats, Olamide. The 12-track album features elements of traditional Nigerian fuji music, Afropop, and South African Amapiano and sees appearances from fellow Nigerian star Burna Boy and American rapper Russ. The results are an ethereal sonic oasis that clearly sets Asake apart from his peers. Includes the single, 'Sungba (Remix),' 'Peace Be Unto You (PBUY),' and 'Terminator.'
