L'Altro Dio

L' Altro Dio (Titoli) (3:12)
L' Altro Dio (Seq 1) (3:08)
Review: Alessandro Alessandroni is a library music legend who set the blueprint for the genre early on and then managed to get even more famous because of providing the iconic whistle on famous spaghetti western 'A Fistful of Dollars'. The influential composer and musician had a big say in the world of soundtracks during the 60s and 70sFour Flies have often released his work or covers of it. The tunes on this 7" are taken from an obscure 1975 Italian film by Elio Bartolini. They walk the thin line between disco and funk and jazz-funk with big horn and rhythm sections. Both might have been lost forever if it weren't for the fact that this label put them on the now modern classic and hard to find compilations Esterno Notte and Esterno Giorno.

Cave Adventure (4:52)
Unicorn Rider (4:04)
Review: There's not a lot of information out there about Arcade of Serpe, so let's skip the back story and cut to the chase. If that's really an appropriate turn of phrase here. Nothing about Cave Adventure feels rushed. Nothing. In fact, it's quite the opposite, opening on dub-wise bass and playful organs, the atmosphere - somewhere between lackadaisical, come down, BBQ, and psychedelic - subtly rises, although not to a crescendo as much as a delicate fade out after a few minutes strutting to the funk-laden groove. Flip it to find more explorations in the sonic ether, with 'Unicorn Rider' smoothly stepping out into a surreal track that uses space and emptiness to accentuate the noises that are there, which mirror, if not directly reflect, the opening title tune. It's quiet, but you won't forget it in a hurry.

Shadows (remastered edit) (6:05)
Morning (remastered edit) (3:29)
Aquarius (remastered edit) (3:17)
Review: The Mysterious Flying Orchestra dropped one album in 1977 and 'Shadows' is one of the tunes from it. It was a cover of a Lonnie Liston Smith gem from 1974 that has become a goldmine of samples for hip hop greats like Gang Starr. Black Cash & Theo show off their edit skills with a vision that allows the lush cosmic keys and freeform bass to shine in this stone-cold classic. They then turn to Cal Tjader's 'Morning' with its big horn leads and 60s vocal harmonies before finally offering the swimming, stylish, serene and string-led sounds of Cal Tjader's dreamy library music style joint 'Aquarius.'

Cascades (4:19)
Pulsazioni (4:46)
Review: Cascate Emozionali comes to Early Sounds in a flurry of Italian library music splendour, all studio session funk and high-end synth scapes for the discerning groover. Keeping things compact on a 7", this single easily stands up to any classic deep digs from the golden age of library music in the 70s and 80s. There are thrumming arps, slinky basslines, funky clavi and plenty more, all rendered in honey-coated tones that suggest serious care and vintage gear in the signal chain. Early Sounds excel at these kinds of records, and any lover of library music will want to add this nugget to their archives.

Postcard From Bangladesh (4:09)
Review: Funk fans will of course know that The Vicious Seeds fail from St. Petersburg and for a while now they have been turning out 45s that mix up raw cinematic grooves and deep funk instrumentals. For this newest 7" they sign up vibraphonist Pavel Chiznik who brings with him plenty of flair on top of the well versed rhythm section. These two cuts explore some airy, uplifting and summery jazz vibes a la Roy Ayers with dope beats and plenty of sample-friendly drumbreaks. Add in a load of funky basslines, some carefully psyched-out guitars and lush vibes and you have a vital little 45rpm.

Xenon (long Effects) (3:44)
Xenon (vocal Effects) (0:45)
Xenon (short Effects) (2:52)
Review: She's the Diva of the Diode, five-time Grammy Awards-nominee for Best New Age Album, and one of America's all-time top synthesising pioneers. If that doesn't tell you almost everything there is to know about Xenon then we're really not sure what will. Ciano is a sound designer, composer, and label executive whose 1970s output was her most commercially successful, but has never backed off from the release schedule, or lost her innovative abilities.

This addition to any Ciani fan's collection is very much everything she's about. Comprising just three tracks, or rather two short tunes and an interlude of just 45-seconds, the best way to describe this is an experiment in descending notes and noises, formed into patterns which slowly present forms of sonic structure. Whether that's warbles or wobbles, bleeps or vocal samples.

Thunder Perfect (5:15)
Review: The Cromagnon Band's debut 7" back in 2019 was a sell-out and critically acclaimed success. They make a welcome return here with another natural fusion of all of the tastes and styles of the individual band members. They have said before they make music in a reverse engineering fashion after years honing their skills producing beats on MPCs before moving to real instruments. They've already featured on compilations from Andy Votel and Doug Shipton's Finder Keepers label and these two nuggets are likely to become crate-digging delights of the future. 'Green Smoke' is a tumble of funky drums and jazzy keys that never let up and 'Thunder Perfect' is a deeper, more spacious approach to funk.

Review: King Underground have started a cute series of 7" releases that looks back to the golden era fo library music. The genre was born as a result of TV, film and radio programs needing music to add drama, atmosphere and mood without the expensive licensing costs of using existing tracks. A wealth of musicians thus recorded endless instrumental tracks of all shapes and sizes and now we're treated to some of the best of them. Sam Fonteyn's 'One Way Trip' comes as warm and cool versions with the first bring a low slung bit of vibes-laced funk and the second a more mysterious piece lead by a flute.

Review: The small but potent Tramp label is back with more irresistible gems from Frederic Rabold Crew. The bad was formed in 1968 and went on to soon become big names in the German jazz scene of their era. The crew travelled a lot throughout Europe and between 1972 and 1980 dropped an impressive six studio albums. Review: Edo no Kaze was a historical drama series that aired in the 1970s. At the time, Katsuhisa Hattori was a revered composer and musician who worked on various TV series and film scores and this show was one of them. The hard to find record has become a grail amongst diggers for its storytelling jazz sounds and reminiscence of Blaxploitation era soundtracks. This is the first ever reissue from Tokyo Condition. Only Two People In The Sea (2:29)
Love Steppin' (1:50)
Review: 'The Horizon Of Happiness' first made its way to vinyl in Japan in 1980 after being created by master musician Katsuhisa Hattori. 'Only Two People In The Sea' is super slow and seductive, steamy and sexual funk with a brilliantly lazy groove. Long held synth strings, melodic curlicues and rising chords all add layer upon layer of lushness that lives mind, body and spirit to the heavens. Flip it over for the fantastic 'Love Steppin' which is a more driven tune but one still packed with love and romance. The bass is to die for, the lead acoustic guitar really sings and the hints of retro 80s nostalgia really swells the heart.

Review: Paul Murphy's Jazz Room Records has offered up fresh pressings of some seriously rare jazz records of late, including some that will be new to even the most dedicated of dusty-fingered diggers. Michel Magne's Le Monocle Rit Jaune is a great example of this. It was originally released on seven-inch single in 1964 and contains a quartet of tunes featured on the soundtrack to a French comedy film of the same name. The EP-opening title track is our pick: a jaunty, club-ready, flute-sporting jazz number that sounds a little like Dave Brubeck classic 'Take Five'. The other three compositions are a little cheekier and quirkier, with more obvious roots in cinematic comedy, but no less inspired in their own way.

Review: Brooklyn based Mighty Eye welcomes the Michael Leonhart Orchestra - which features some 20+ musicians - for their first single since 2018, although the collective has put out three albums in that time. These two cuts on this 45rpm are the first and second movements in Michael Leonhart's The Normyn Suite #1, which is a soundtrack to the five stages of grieving and is both a celebration and a requiem. The soundtrack is inspired by the death of an old dog and first appeared on The Normyn Suites album. They recorded this superbly good psyched-out and dubbed up masterpiece in 1981 and here both sides offer the same tune in different arrangements. There is more of an afro vibe to the opener with great sax and synth phrasings and vocals from a choir that are weirdly processed. On the flip is a more downtempo mix for Carribean and chilled out vies. They are both versatile and sure to liven up any club.

Review: Following a near two-year absence from vinyl, the usually prolific Misha Paniflov is back on Funk Night Records with another nostalgic 45 rooted in deep funk, library music, cinematic soundtracks and psychedelia. The Estonian first offers up 'Dr Juvenal's Solution', a jaunty and genuinely heavy dancefloor work out marked out by sixties spy-movie guitars, bustling breaks, intergalactic synth sounds and warming bass. Originally commissioned by Chicago's Public Media Institute for their 2020 Quarantine Times publication, the track now sees wider release following Resavoir's 2023 self-titled LP which came after their 2019 debut of the same name. Review: First launched way back in the early 2000s, 4 Hero man Marc Mac's Visioneers project - which also features extensive contributions from fellow producer Luke Parkhouse - has tended to be a vehicle for his love of jazz and hip-hop. This two-track seven-inch single is a little different though. Title track 'Red Cactus', for example, sounds like an all-live mixture of heavy funk, the Chemical Brothers' sample-rich 'Block Rockin' Beats' and the kind of library funk that once appeared on the soundtracks of obscure spaghetti westerns. Slow Motion (1:35)
Just Funky (2:13)
Review: A unique slice of classic library music flies off the shelf. These four tracks were lifted from the classic library music series known only as 'Sounds Music Album Volume 18', and were made by the library maestro Klaus Weiss, the former jazz drummer who later turned to the trade after falling in with German music publisher Ring Musik. An eerie uncanniness cuts across these instrumentals, as Weiss' drumming provides steady boppage to serene yet dubious backings of strings and synth.

Review: This great series from Dynamite Cuts continues to delve deep into the alluring world of library music. It is sound that captures real feelings and evokes all sorts of memories, even those that are imagined, with a single note or seductive groove. This collection is made of tracks from the German Library series Sound Music Albums which sell for over L150 if you can find a copy. There are four tunes in all, three from Klaus Weiss and one from Peter Thomas, all of which add up to another great collection and a must for serious music heads.

Knight Rider: Japan Sleeve Edition
Cat: C 4000JAPAN. Rel: 11 Jul 23
The Zone Identity - "Knight Rider" (3:27)
J Zone - "9 Breaks" (The Warm Up) (2:36)
Review: .Back in 2021 when he first dropped this one, The Zone Identity had been away for two years. It was a fine return though that now comes with a special Japanese Edition sleeve. The project is an anonymous one but they excel at soul-jazz grooves and tasteful covers of classic material and that this one is led by drummer Jay Mumford. 'Knight Rider' is a super cover of the title tune of the iconic 80s show. It's replayed with heavy drums snapping beneath the classic synth phrasing and some extra late night vibes. J-Zone then offers a slow motion workout with '9 Breaks (The Warm Up).' Still fresh.
