Blind On A Galloping Horse (5:32)
Review: David Holmes' first solo album since 2008's The Holy Pictures, Blind On A Galloping Horse now comes to Heavenly Recordings. A politically-charged LP full of sonic interrogations of political disaster and turmoil, Holmes here joins the cast of artists using their art to provide solace to music fans suffering at the hands of the Uncertainocene. With updated versions of the previously released singles 'Hope Is The Last Thing To Die' and 'It's Over If We Run Out Of Love', as well as a recording of an unreleased song by Holmes' late friend Andrew Weatherall, we're reminded of conflict, migration and othering, as all manner of voices combine to form a diverse but unified whole against a backdrop of leftfield post-punk - be they the spoken word accounts from Afghan and Ukrainian refugees now welcomed as residents in Belfast, or the French and Irish observers of the UK's turmoil of recent years.

Review: A quarter century old now, yet these art-rock giants and eternal malcontents seem as restless in their muse and motion as ever - still chronicling an increasingly complicated and strenuous age yet doing it with finesse, grace and innovation. The urgent, invigorating strains of single 'Burn the Witch' were no anomaly, and 'A Moon Shaped Pool' shows them shaking off the more insular tendencies of their last opus 'King Of Limbs' to engage and electrify in a way that they haven't truly managed for years - radiant, celestial ambience shares space here with impressive ire and emotional engagement, with these peerless experimentalists delivering a record that transcends both their own work and the vast majority of the musical landscape they survey.

Review: The latest of Radiohead's reissues is an utter avalanche of material. 'Kid A Mnesia' itself is an 'album mashup' between their two albums Kid A and Amnesia; both projects are remastered and released side-by-side on the same LP. It doesn't stop there: for the fanatics, there's an exclusive third disc, Kid Amnesiae, which contains formerly unheard material both recording sessions, as well as Kid Amnesiette, a cassette of B-sides. This ultra-deluxe edition is, decidedly, one for the ultra-fans. Besides the radical electronic fever dreams making up both projects, this version contains the never-before-heard song 'If You Say The Word' on the bonus CD. Remastered on vinyl and cut at half the speed of the original LP, it's an audiophile's banquet. Also watch out for the exclusive booklet of drawings that come with the special edition of this special edition.

Review: Known for his raw authenticity, Hot Water Music co-frontman Ragan embraces a dynamic blend of genres on this new collection. The album's lead single, 'Wild In Our Ways', showcases Ragan's signature gravelly voice alongside harder-hitting Americana-infused rock, marking a shift from his usual folk sound. The track's anthemic spirit captures themes of survival and resilience, with lyrics that rally behind the underdog. Ragan's commitment to honesty and musical exploration shines throughout Love and Lore, which was delayed due to the pandemic and his family commitments. Conceptualised in 2016, it eventually came together in early 2023. Songs like 'Echo the Halls', also featured on the album, continue this bold sonic evolution and Ragan's approach remains rooted in integrity and a willingness to stretch beyond boundaries. For fans of both his punk and solo work, Love and Lore promises to be a bold, heartfelt release, with his unmistakable warmth and conviction at its core.

As the album celebrates its 25th anniversary, fans are treated to a visually striking vinyl release. This anniversary reissue edition offers an opportunity to revisit and appreciate the album in a new light. Californication has stood the test of time as a commercial success, with its title track becoming a cultural phenomenon with over one billion views on YouTube. One of the band's most complete and important releases with the new red and blue vinyl complimenting the artwork perfectly.

Review: Red Hot Chili Peppers have found some good form of late with a new album Unlimited Love earlier in the year now followed by a surprise second new album. Anthony Kiedis and co's Return of the Dream Canteen is a second Rick Rubin-produced album. The group said of the album "We went in search of ourselves. A beautiful bit of chemistry meddling that had befriended us hundreds of times along the way. Once we found that slipstream of sound and vision, we just kept mining." This one sounds like classic Chilis with plenty of funk and big riffs as well as great songwriting.

This new compilation, as the title suggests, brings together some rarities and hard to find tracks from their heyday. Elements of soul, rockabilly, pop and punk rock all inform their tracks and breath new life into the new wave and post punk forms they work in. Highlights include the strident 'Reds Strike The Blues' and fierce 'Young & Proud.'

This edition of it is a special limited edition 180 g yellow vinyl that will remind you of some of the maudlin American rocker's best bits. The album itself is now well over 30 years old but is still thought to be one of the best albums of the 90s. It came after their breakout album Out of Time and did not disappoint, going on to be certified four times platinum in the US thanks to featuring some of the band's biggest hit singles 'Nightswimming,' 'Man on the Moon' and 'Everybody Hurts.'

Review: R.E.M.'s Fables of the Reconstruction, receiving deluxe reissue treatment, marks a transitional period for the band. Amidst relentless writing and touring, the album reflects a slight strain but maintains R.E.M.'s distinct character. With a Southern-infused sound evoking small-town imagery, it showcases Michael Stipe's emerging lyrical themes and the band's evolving musical ambitions. From the jangle-pop of 'Driver 8' to the cinematic 'Feeling Gravity's Pull,' the album navigates a range of styles. Fables has aged well, appreciated for its eccentric style and offbeat subjects. Overall, it's a very fine addition to R.E.M.'s catalogue, offering a glimpse into a pivotal moment in the band's journey.

Review: Forty years ago a yet unknown cult band was to release a LP that never came. Interesting enough, Rema-Rema - made up of former members of The Models and Siouxsie & The Banshees - delivered 4AD one of its first releases: Wheel In Roses (1980). All tracks from that EP, in their new wave, post-punk glory, feature on this Fond Reflections LP, a compendium of sorts detailing across 17 tracks the band's raw and unplugged sound. Collected, re-mixed and engineered by band member Gary Asquith and mixing technician Takatsuna Mukai, the result is an archival, patchwork collage of a lost but not forgotten trip down the lanes of UK folklore. Get to grips with "Fond Affections", "Feedback Song" and "Why Ask Why".

Review: A self-declared "proper second album", the songs that comprise The Rhythm Method's latest full-length Peachy are born of candour, and from the emotional rollercoaster that is touring. After a psychotic episode related to the job in 2018, frontman Rowan Martin made the defiant decision to carry on touring and recording despite the experience, seeing things through. Peachy is the result of this dedication, with new songs like 'I Love My Television' and 'Have A Go Heroes' blending Mike Skinner-esque and slacker rock songwriting, making for affecting Britpop edibles. Influences on the new sound will surprise confirmed fans; ranging from The Band and Kris Kristofferson to The Waterboys and Deacon Blue - it is a marked departure from their beginnings. Traditional Irish and Scottish music also play a huge part on this record: Aoife Power lending a Cranberries-esque Celtic warmth to a collection of poignant, thoughtful and at times moving songs that will dramatically switch perceptions of this duo.

Review: From a cover image wonderfully displaying the proportional difference between humans and the world we call home, to the expansive pedal steel guitar chords that weep their way through the musical destinations here, Raymond Richards encapsulates the vast openness of the US in sound, offering aural interpretations of the beauty and desolation, hope and devastation this wildly rich but painfully unequal country is home to. Track titles are inspired by real pins on the map, although it's unlikely you'll recognise many - we're talking 'Paradise, California' (a swooning, sun-kissed closing overture), 'Astoria, Oregon' (a lilting, vast but quiet slice of ambient) and 'Roslyn, Washington' (which sounds like psychedelic country) rather than more obvious places like Los Angeles, where Richards stomped about with the likes of DJ Lovefingers and Slowdive affiliates Mojave 3 in the late-1990s.

Review: Raymond Richards emerges once again as a musical maestro in Sand Paintings, displaying his unparalleled mastery of the pedal steel. Teaming up with Calexico's John Convertino and an array of eclectic instrumentalists, Richards delves deeper into his contemplative sonic world. From the courageous chords of 'Badwater Basin' to the dramatic landscapes of 'Monument Valley' and 'Saguaro,' each track resonates with emotional depth and cultural richness. While the album expands into grand cinematic gestures, there's a stoic singularity pervading throughout - a lonesome cowboy facing the elements with unwavering resolve. Despite the visceral intensity, a cloaked vulnerability emerges, revealing a profound connection to the world. Sand Paintings is not merely an album; it's a journey through landscapes of sound and emotion, guided by Richards' transcendent vision and honesty.

Review: Tarantula is one of those bittersweet moments in the history of UK rock & roll. On the one hand, it's a fantastic album that showcases the natural talent and innovative approach to song craft that Ride had first grabbed attention with. On the other, it marked the beginning of the end for the group, or more accurately, the first chapter following the end - finally getting a release after the outfit had called time and gone their separate ways. Still, in so far as swan songs go, there are plenty to celebrate here. Tarantula is a purist's rock & roll extravaganza at times, with its gritty riffs and forward momentum, tracks like 'Burnin'' perhaps best typify this, or those looking for a taste of the genre's 1960s origin story might look to 'Deep Inside My Pocket'. But then it's all much more complex than that, too, with the reflective indie balladry of 'Castle On The Hill', noise pop on 'Gonna Be Alright', and hypnotising layers on 'Ride The Wind'.

Review: Shoegaze legends Ride are on a reissuing role, having announced a re-release campaign of almost all their early classic albums on Wichita Recordings. 'Going Blank Again' is the patrician's choice, being one of their most acclaimed and praised. Unlike contempories a-la My Bloody Valentine, Ride's sound at this point was clear and crisp; it was drowned in sonic light, not vacuum fuzz, and carried with it a cheerier edge that predicted the sounds of later bands like Weezer. Don't miss this orange vinyl bundle version.

Recorded in a small wood cabin at the bottom of their garden, the album traverses dreamy bossa, ambient folk, fuzzy tropicalia, and majestic MPB, enveloped in masterful string arrangements and trippy electronics. Lau Ro's delicate yet confident vocals, sung in both English and Portuguese, navigate themes of urban pollution and utopian dreams rich with nature and wildlife - a journey of rediscovery, as Lau Ro reconnect with their roots while embracing their European experiences. The result is music that feels like it belongs to a parallel universe Brazil, offering a glimpse into Lau Ro's multifaceted identity and artistic vision.

Review: It feels like Romy's debut album has been a long time coming, but it's absolutely worth the wait. Stepping to one side of the imposing shadow of her band The xx, the world-famous singer-songwriter has taken her time to deliver something sincere and vulnerable which opens up her world and celebrates the places she's found sanctuary. Having worked extensively with production wonder boy Fred Again, writing for other artists, the two finally funnelled their creative chemistry into songs for Romy which now result in a perfect nugget of pop-club with aeons of space for all the feelings to swirl. It's immediate and catchy, but elegant in equal measure, and certain to lodge Romy in the pantheon of modern pop titans for sensitive souls.

Review: If you've ever seen the smash hit Netflix sci-fi series Altered Carbon then consider Caroline Rose's decision to invest in a new sleeve. Trace the singer-songwriter's history back and you'll find early work heavily influenced by, or indeed completely existing within, the country scene, guitar-twangs and melodrama abound. By 2018 she was clearly eying up a transition on the album 'Loner', and then two years on she's finally cast aside the badlands sounds in favour of something altogether more glossy and mainstream chart-friendly.

Her lyrics still have warmth, honesty and wit. And 'Superstar' definitely packs melodrama. But this is unashamedly pop, dancefloor moments, stadia-filling crescendos and synthesised element are everywhere. At its darkest and most innovative are the whirring anti-harmonies of 'Command Z', with those affected vocals. Next track 'Back At The Beginning' is perhaps the funkiest, while the sweetest comes from sugar-coated uptempo number 'Do You Think We'll Last Forever'.

Review: Perhaps the most abstract, clangorous and genre-defying entry in the formidable Royal Trux catalogue, 1990s Twin Infinitives is a sprawling, tactile odyssey punctuated by Neil Hagerty's acerbic guitar stabs and Jennifer Herrema's sleazy vocal free association. Through the thick squalling gauze witch Hagerty and Herrema superimpose on each track, ghosts of A/B song form emerge and disintegrate, with blues licks and disarmingly gentle croons offset by rumbling mechanical loops and sonic shrapnel. It really feels like the ground zero, the most amoebic and uncompromising launchpad for what would become the Royal Trux sound. Highlights include the Henry Flynt-esque 'Ice Cream', the cavernous flute peals of 'Osiris' and the rollicking, fuzz-damaged 'Glitterbust'. One of the best from one of the best!

Review: This cult classic disco album is now a full four decades old, so what better time to reissue it in a special 40th Anniversary Edition? Spittle Dependance out of Italy have done that here and it is an alluring listen all these years on that kicks off with the proto-house sounds and echo-laden slow-motion grooves of 'Fire' before 'Sexual Desire' get tinny and analogue and cold, 'Marry A Bad Girl' plays with some more colourful synth sequences and nice deadpan vocals and 'It's Not Too Grand' is a real low slung disco chugger. A wonderful album if you ask us.

Review: A posthumous release that furthers Arthur Russell's now legendary status. Recorded in Downtown New York City on December 20, 1985, it's an intimate, unedited solo live performance recorded at Phill Niblock's loft space known as Experimental Intermedia Foundation. The takes are very raw and unpolished that it makes you feel like one of the very few in attendance. 'That's the Very Reason' is a beautiful, tender experimental folk piece showing he needed very few materials in order to send listeners on a journey of transcendence. 'Too Early To Tell' is highly idiosyncratic and produces a sound not normally associated with cello. And 'Sunlit Water' has an oriental feel and provides beautiful resolve to a resplendent set.
