Art Blakey - "Stretching" (J Rocc edit) (3:43)
Digable Planets - "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" (4:18)
Review: With a refreshed label design, the Originals series seems in no trouble of running out of steam any time soon as catalogue number 30 hones into view. The 29th rinky dinky Originals squares the focus on Art Blakey's "Stretching" with one of the world's best DJs, J Rocc, offering up a fine 45 treatment of the Jazz classic on the A Side. Representing the sample flip on the flip is Digable Planets and "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" which deftly pulled out the horns and bassline from Blakey's original and looped them up for what is now regarded as an early '90s hip hop classic.

Review: The Re-edits man strikes again with devastating remixes of James Brown's "Hot", which notoriously borrowed Bowie's "Fame" riff (or was it the other way around?), as well as David Bowie's "Golden Years". Massively funky re-edits destined to do some dancefloor damage!

D Lord - "Start The World"
Werner Williams - "You've Got Style"
Review: Universal Cave Records 003 pairs another record digging and DJ duo, Philadelphia's D. Lord and Werner Williams. D. Lord's 'Start the World' is stampeding euro funk with chainsawing clav and an unrelenting bass groove. Maximum funk effect achieved with vital precision. Werner Williams' 'You've Got Style' exudes cool. It's one part psychedelic synth groove and one part cockeyed classic rock, soaring harmonies & juju for days - a long lost cousin to Fox's 'The Juggler.'

Dancefloor Outlaws - "Meet Me"
Basement Freaks - "Mo Diggity"
Review: Cute little 7 inchers don't come around that often, but when they do it's worth paying attention, especially when the quality is as good as this mighty double A. Dancefloor Outlaws take the lead, and upkeep the party rep they've developed previously on Disco Cakes. Instant sing-along power and a real cock-sure strut to the groove, it's a wonder they've crammed so much power onto such a tiny slice of vinyl. Basement Freaks takes over the B for some equally ravishing funk; taking Blackstreet's massive smash and bringing it up bang up to date for the nu funk generation, this will instantly bring booty to your dancefloor. Comes with a free download code too.

Remember Me (Kenny Dope instrumental)
Review: The Professor's back! "Remember Me" was written on a bus ride back to Camden, composed and arranged by Gary Davis, in March of 1979. "Remember Me" was recorded at the fabled Sound Ideas Studio in midtown Manhattan. Davis played all the instruments: bass, keyboard, strings - everything except session musician Michael Campbell's drums came out of Davis' hands. This is a lovely Kay Dee re-release.

Sicka (4:01)
Review: The hard-touring, heavy-funking, Craig Charles-endorsed Cornish six piece Daytona tease us for their album with this cheeky double-A 45". "Needed You" is a straight up northern soul thumper with relentlessly driving beat, gutsy vocals, big piano rolls and crucial flutes while "Sicka" takes us right back to the sixties with a fiery ode to a greenback classic. Sweaty, forthright and tighter than a nun's purse, bring on the album already!

Lisa Decker & Nautilus - "Summer Child" (4:21)
Review: Lisa Decker makes a return with two new singles here that are taken from her upcoming album which is due in May of this year. It comes two years after her debut with the Japanese jazz trio Nautilus and marks something of a conceptual shift in her sound. 'Love & Hope' finds her turn in a stylish jazz vocal with funky bass loops and organic drums and percussion that straddle many different genres. 'Summer Child' then sinks into a nice smooth jazz-funk vibe with soft focus chords bringing a touch of class to her breezy vocals.

Panama Cardoon & Audry Funk - "EGO" (4:15)
Review: Resense return with another bubbling cauldron of international funk; "Mambo Perez" is a muted trumpet freakfrest with a one way ticket to Cuba by way of Lisbon. Precision diced edits and a really crisp break ensure chaos wherever you play this in the world. "EGO" flicks the samba switch as Greek Panama Cardoon gets wild with Mexican Audry Funk giving her stacks of space for a powerful vocal-focussed hip-slinker. Stunning contemporary funk for all quarters.

Jimmy's Groove (part 1) (3:51)
Jimmy's Groove (part 2) (2:38)
Review: Jason Gray of Polyrythmics fame was the engineer on this tune from the Devon Lamar Organ Trio. It is the last one from the session to be pressed to limited edition - and pink - 45rpm and comes in two parts. 'Jimmy's Groove (part 1)' is a super funky jam, with brilliant organ work as you would expect, and tight stick work that rides up and down and is backed by funky and knotted bass. There is a playful and psyched-out 60s feel that carries over to the flipside and 'Jimmy's Groove (part 2).' Here there are more breakout organ solos and the grooves just keep on rolling.

Barabara (4:30)
People's Republic (3:55)
Review: David Hanke has only just started releasing music under the Dem Juju Poets moniker, and already he's managed to instil a very clear direction in terms of sound aesthetic and creative direction. This new two-tracker for the emergent Matasuna label is full of joie de vivre, with the opening tune "Barabara" managing to blend the best elements of funk, high-life, afrobeat, and generally coming up with a tune that's just so damn easy to dance to. "People's Republic", the flipside track, is a horn-led groover, another slice of worldly funk back by a bumpy, positive tribalistic tone that we instantly associate to the dance floor. Excellent stuff - let's keep it coming!

Calypso Daddy
Everything Will Be Alright
Review: Jeanne Demetz's killer "Calypso Daddy" was cut in the 1950s but never actually saw a commercial release, so for collectors it's a completely new discovery. Perhaps it was deemed too unusual or exotic for mass consumption, or perhaps it was shelved as the bandleader responsible, Johnny Alston, was experiencing a downturn in popularity after enjoying success through the 1940s. Whatever the reason, we're glad it's finally seeing the light of day; a killer Latin rhythmic pattern, great instrumentation and seductive Calypso-esque vocal combine to great effect. On the flipside "Everything Will Be Alright" starts off with a bluesy boogie woogie piano and walking double basslines before Jeanne delivers the full weight of the song with the catchy titled chorus.

Kem Dahg
Review: Minneapolis 11-piece Derobe Dance Band sound so authentic, if you didn't know they're a new act you'd think they came straight of Lagos in 1970. Even these recordings come with that dusty weight of the original Afrobeat recordings. Lead track "Gogoplata" is all about the dramatic dynamics, first emphasising the horn messages before dropping into a lush organs while the guitars shimmer with highlife nuances in the background. "Kem Dahg" comes with more of a funk flavour than its soft subtle opening that ignites to a bold horn chorus. This band has clearly studied their inspirations for a long time and they've conjured a fantastic fusion as a result. An essential 7".

Sampled by everyone from J-Lo to Jay-Z, Manu Dibango's 1972 classic is perhaps one of the most influential and heavily referenced afrofunk tracks of all time. Echoing with shades of every genre we know and love today, it still sounds just as timeless, infectious and ultimately agenda-setting today as the first time you heard it. If your collection doesn't sport this original yet, now is most certainly the time.

Review: Promoting his limited vinyl series from the 7" league to the 12" premiership, Diesler's Buried Treasure brand provides its biggest beat bounty to date. Charged with a thriving sense of turbo funk and broken beat mischief, each cut screams carnival and peak time perkiness. The tight horn harmonies and percussive textures of "Smokin Jo Crow"; the slower, seductive boogie-based jam "In The Loop"; the tight, jazzed out Bugz-style stomps of "Rokko Loko"; the acid wiggles and tropical riddim of "Lullaby"... Right Now
Review: The Difusion crew turned some heads last year with the low-key release of their first grip of cult edits, and now they're back with a second installment that keeps the source material obscure, the treatment respectful and the vibes pure and positive. "Someday" is a killer simmering slice of disco funk, while "On The Scene" slows things down and turns up the 70s bombast with Philly strings and brass blasts aplenty. "Freaksta" takes things in a more cosmic direction, while "Right Now" aims right for Studio 54 indebted flamboyance, all stirring diva vocals and bold production to get everyone freaking the right way.

Just One More Kiss (feat Janey Hallett) (5:50)
Just One More Mix (5:26)
Review: During the first half of the 80s, Andy Sojka and Richard De Jongh wrote and produced countless UK jazz-funk, electro, soul and boogie jams, working with both obscure and relatively well-known acts (Atmosfear included). They also released a handful of singles of their own under aliases, including this one as Distance. Long out of print and finally getting a reissue courtesy of Freestyle, 'Just One More Kiss' is a superb chunk of breezy, synths-and-drum-machine driven chunk of British electrofunk featuring sweet lead vocals from Janet Halley. Over on the flip you'll find the original instrumental/dub version, 'Just One More Mix', a fine alternative take that wisely concentrates on the groove, guitars and synths and largely avoids cheesy 80s production trickery and stuttering edit effects.

DJ Applejuice - "Good Feeling"
Osmose - "Penny's Afterhours"
Review: The nucleus of the dirrty south, and the birthplace of trap, Atlanta has more to offer than sleazy, grinding 808s. As proved by this fantastic dubby disco 7 from Smokecloud. Applejuice takes a well known Etta James sample (previously used by Pretty Lights and pilfered by Flo Rida) and massages it into a much smokier, trip-hop template while Osmose dubs out a vibrant Silver Convention string hook, drops the tempo and adds a whole bucket of low-end. Funky.

Police Woman (2:32)
Kunming Beats (1:48)
Review: The latest artist to join Dinked's roster of soul and funk obsessives is DJ D.S.K, a China-based Brit who grew up cutting and scratching hip-hop and old funk breaks. The three tracks showcased here seem to be built around samples from tasty old funk bombs, from cut-up and rearranged breaks, to punchy horn lines and low-slung basslines. Lead cut "Lamine" is particularly potent, featuring as it does DJ-friendly drum breaks, jangling soul guitars, rubbery bass and a floor-friendly rhythm track. Flip for the looser, electric piano-heavy dancefloor strut of "Police Woman", and the dusty, head-nodding, trumpet-laden hip-hop bounce of "Kumming Beats" (and, yes, it's a sneaky cut-up of an old James Brown tune).

Stealin' James (part 1)
Stealin' James (part 2)
Review: "Stealin' James" is DJ Format's modern day cut 'n' paste tribute to the music of the sadly deceased Godfather of Soul, James Brown. It is very much in keeping with the style of the classic JB 'cut-up' records such as Coldcut's "Payback Mix", Double D & Steinski's "Lesson 2" and of course "Feelin' James", reputedly the work of Danny Krivit. Part one kicks off with the well known intro to "Get Up, Get Into It and Get Involved" before firing through intricately layered and perfectly timed samples of all the well known and well loved breaks. Not just confined to the work of The Godfather himself, it takes in the productions of his closest collaborators and family of musicians whilst giving a nod to some of the hip-hop records that sampled the tracks and introduced a whole new generation of people to his timeless music.

Travel Jazz
Review: "It all starts with old records" goes the quote on the biography for DJ Ian Head, a dusty fingered selector from Brooklyn who's been serving up mixtapes and podcasts via his Everydaybeats website since 2006. It makes sense that his debut vinyl release would lean on a classic of veritable terms in Kool & The Gang's "Summer Madness". A cover version that seeps with reverence to the original, Head's take on "Summer Madness" eschews sampling in favour of playing keys, live percussion and drum programming. It's a subtle take that will hit the more untrained ears when that classic synth line unfolds. On the flip Mr Head drops a more upbeat number in "Travel Jazz" that has some excellent brushed percussion.

Side A is DJ Suro a re-work of Patti Drew's 1968 version of 'Hard to Handle' that has big brass sounds, low slung bass and a fine soul vocal scoring to real heights. Review: Get familiar... DJ Vas was the guiding force of French electronic act Kojak. In their time they were up there with the biggest French exports you can imagine. Now flying solo, he's still got funk oozing from every creative pore as he digs out four formative disco/funk cuts and gives them his own unique twist. Ayers undergoes major loop surgery as Vas teases and pleases us with the instantly distinctive hook of "Love Will Bring Us Back Together". BB & Q get beef in the kick department while Vas leaves their supreme synth boogie flavours almost untouched. Crown Heights Affair, meanwhile, get two Vas facelifts... "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" is stripped back to begin with, allowing the dynamic to build with more grace and impact while "Use Your Body & Soul" is given a fine filter polish and refocus on the vocal phrases that we guarantee will instantly stun any floor.

Rich, organic and dreamy, close your eyes and you can smell the ciggie-stenched 70s, albeit with a few contemporary twists. "Journey To The Shore" is a salute to Bob James with its misty gazed refrains, sexy fretless bass and sudden switches in time signatures. Arguably even better is "A Little Blahzay", a wonderfully stoned modern soul song whose lyrics deal with the kind of pointlessly cyclical and bitter arguments that come with long-term relationships at times. If that wasn't enough to set the pulse racing, check out closer "Canvas Beats" (a tasty version of A-side opener "Canvas Cathedral").

Come Back Breaker

Come Back Breaker (3:44)
Beats Working (2:45)
Drums Working (bonus Beat) (0:50)
Review: Dr Rubberfunk's sound has become more reliant on organic instrumentation over the years, but at heart he's still a turntablist with a love of Steinski and Coldcut style cut-and-paste productions. So while his recent My Life in 45 album was a kaleidoscopic musical smorgasbord of sounds, this follow-up single is a much more back-to-basics banger tailor-made for excitable DJs and even more excited breakdancers. 'Come Back Breaker' is a rolling, fun-fuelled number in which a plethora of quirky spoken word snippets and cut-up, energy-packed drum-breaks vie for attention with warm bass and guitar sounds seemingly lifted from old funk and soul jams. He continues this approach on the more jazz-funk influenced workout 'Beats Working', before showcasing his sweaty breaks on the short, DJ-friendly rhythm track 'Drums Working'.

Disco Scene (3:57)
Disco Scene (Breaks Of Wrath re-edit) (3:19)
Review: Dr Rubberfunk: what he lacks in legit medical credentials, he makes up for in absolute funk plaudits. Tongue-in-cheek, clever and sprung with a groove so slinky you might just lose your trousers, "Disco Scene" marks its 16th anniversary since its debut in 2001 with this updated edit on a cheeky blink-and-miss 45. Backed up with the equally bubblesome (if a little heavier) Breaks Of Wrath blend, this stands the test of time impeccably.

The Love You Save
Remember The Time
Review: Two fine MJ cover version-style re-rubs from Chicago roots-funk band The Drastics, this 7" explores Jacko's rich musical heritage with style and panache. "The Love You Save" gives the Jackson Five a cheeky, lightweight bubble skank while "Remember The Time" gets the full Caribbean horn treatment, slinky electric bass and neat, clipped organs. Using the original recorded vocals, both versions are nailed with a rare authenticity seldom found on MJ covers.

Don't Get Caught
Young Blood
Review: Colemine Records return with a Bay Area funk transmission that will hit you right in the gut! With numbers that almost reach twenty when playing live, San Francisco act Droptones are very much the exception to the 'too many cooks' platitude and they kill it on the record too! There are plenty of groups out there claiming to play heavy funk and retro soul, but not so many possess a vocal section that lives and breathes blue eyed authenticity like Droptones do. Put simply Tiffany Austin and Lilan Kane own the A Side cover of Hayes & Porter's "Don't Get Caught" whilst "Young Blood" has that good groove that the funk floors love.

Jesus Boogie (reissue)

Jesus Boogie (2:29)
Cachaca (4:32)
Review: Matasuna's latest must-have release comes courtesy of Dubben, an artist whose tasty, dub-fired mid-2000s reworks of Afro-Cuban and Latin tracks remain some of G.A.M.M.'s most potent moments. This is the producer's first release of any sort for nearly five years and continues in a similar vein. Check first A-side "Jesus Boogie", a samba-soaked, dub-funk fuelled revision of what sounds like a mid-1970s Brazilian MPB workout. Sweatier flavours are provided on B-side cut "Cachaca", where he dubs out and tools up a punchy affair that boasts a killer horn part reminiscent of The Champs classic "Tequila".

I Feel Good
Review: Unless you're really subverting it and doing something pretty far out, James Brown covers are largely best avoided. Duffy and Johnny's rendition is a refreshing exception; the orchestra carry serious weight (and keep it as tight as Brown as insist himself) and Johnny's delivery is emphatic enough to rise myriad groin thrusts. Watch out for the incredible organ solo, followed by a double kickdrum crescendo and insane spiralling horn riffs. Feel good? Damn straight!

Woman Of The Ghetto

Woman Of The Ghetto (3:40)
Woman Of The Ghetto (instrumental) (3:11)
Review: When you hear people talk about 'boogie', it's largely thanks to the music that resides on the catalogue of the SAM label, some to some of the most blazing electro-disco bangers from the '80s. Standing undisputed as one of the founding labels for the genre, Doris Duke's cover of Marlena Shaw's "Woman Of The Ghetto" is the perfect balance between soul and something else, something murkier, deeper, with a more electronic edge. Both the vocal and the instrumental cuts are serious weapons for any dance floor, and although they might be relatively slower compared to other SAM joints, they're still as sexy as hell...

Island Disco: The Funky Sound Of The Caribbean Vol 2
Duke - "Is It Groovy Now"
Tremille & The Jamals - "If You Feel Like"
Shadow - "De Hardis" (instrumental)
Gerald P J Browne - "Sexy Lady"
Review: The first Island Disco 12", released earlier in the Spring, was something of a must-have for those who like their funk, soul and disco served with a healthy dollop of tropical flavour. Predictably, this second installment in the bootleg series is similarly essential. There's some Clavinet-heavy disco-soul swing in the shape of Duke's superb "Is It Groovy Now", a thrillingly percussive, Hammond-heavy boogaloo workout from Tremille & The Jamals, a frankly bizarre - but brilliant - fusion of Cajan violins and disco rhythms from Shadow, and a certified disco banger from Gerald PJ Browne (the hustlin' brilliance of "Sexy Lady"). All Killer, no filler.

Mood Matters
Danse Macabre (feat Bad Jazz Troupe)
Seventy Three
Longing Lingers (feat Carla Vallet & Bartellow)
Review: Jazz & Milk label boss Dusty fires up the anticipation machine with this fruity four piece from his forthcoming album. "Mood Matters" bangs with jazz house attitude. Establishing a rock-solid groove, Dusty lets the trumpets loose as they scribble all over his tight beat work. "Danse Macabre" is a co-lab with his live act Bad Jazz Troupe who live up their name with a whole cavalcade of rhythm switches and psychedelic melodic patterns. "Seventy Three" is heads south for a lesson in horn-heaved Afrofunk while "Longing Lingers" finishes on a sultry, soul-jazz boogie note thanks to the sexy vocals of Carla Vallet. Yummy.

Dusty Donuts 12

All Eyes On Lovin' (Naughty NMX Cali mix) (3:32)
Keep Your Head Alright (RUNEX Zapped Up mix) (4:10)
Review: More DJ-friendly cut-ups and mash-ups from the Dusty Donuts camp, whose modus operandi seems to be the pursuit of dancefloor carnage. Naughty NMX is the producer at the controls on side A, delivering a "Cali Mix" of "All Eyes on Lovin" that effortlessly joins the dots between woozy sunshine disco, sugary soul and punchy electrofunk. It's the sort of track that will sound superb booming out of sound systems at sun-baked daytime parties. RUNEX handles the B-side, underpinning elements from a couple of similarly saucer-eyed blue-eyed cuts with punchy, hip-hop style beats and well-placed effects. It's effectively yacht rock for the MPC generation, which is no bad thing in our book.
