Review: A true lesson in Afrobeat right here as Miguel Toro, Gyver Hypman and Augusto recreate some of Tony Allen's classic rhythms and deliver them as neat, funk-coated instrumentals. Perfect for DJ sets and sampling alike, a huge amount of musicianship and thought has gone into these. From the super mellow rim shot riddim of "Niaja Breaks" to the more thriving frenetic flavours of "Afrobeat Jam" (a beat that's found favour with the likes of Toddla T et al in recent years), this is a fine revisitation and a genuine education.

Love Is A Natural Thing
Review: Kindred Spirits get a big, heartfelt hug from Juno for their Tony Allen reissue series, in which they lovingly restore and repress 12"s from the master of afrobeat. The No Discrimination EP was first recorded in 1978, shortly after Allen ended his decade long collaboration with Fela Kuti. The silky funk of the title track suits the message of peace contained within the lyrics; flip over for the awesome "Ariya" - a reminder, as if we needed one, that Allen is truly one of the finest drummers in existence. Those already enamoured with the percussive charms of irresistible rhythms of the Nigerian's work will be all over this - for those of you yet to succumb to this man's singular talent, there's no better place to start.

Review: The Allergies' debut album introduced the world to the way they effortlessly fuse funk, soul, disco, hip-hop and breaks into dancefloor-ready nuggets of ear candy. Taking classic sounds and reshaping them for the modern age is the signature that won them plaudits across the globe. Not ones to rest on their laurels, it hasn't taken long for them to deliver more of the goods on their second full-length album. As well as taking the successful formula of the first record and expanding on their sound, the band enlisted two giants of underground hip-hop to bless mics on the album as well. After a hugely successful collaboration on their debut LP, once again the dynamic lyricism and production skills of the inimitable Andy Cooper (Ugly Duckling) are present and correct in this new collection.

Review: Gbubemi Amas is hardly Nigeria's most famous musical export. He began his career at the dawn of the 1980s, enjoying a certain level of success with debut album Grill. That set, reissued here for the first time since, was in many ways typical of developments in Nigerian popular music at the time. Amas was one of a new generation of artists moving away from the Afrobeat and Highlife styles that had dominated Lagos in the 1970s, instead laying down punchy, pop-tinged cuts heavily influenced by both American dance music (and in particular disco and boogie), and AOR rock. Highlights include the tasty disco-boogie of "Slow Down", the horn-heavy dancefloor sweetness of "For You", and the atmospheric synth-pop of closer "Listen".

With a very soulful singer from the Vienna scene, the most requested Austrian funk LP from the 70s selling for large amounts, top rare and in demand grooves for collectors and DJs. Originally released on the Bacillus label/ Bellaphon, now brought back from Sonorama, featuring famous and bootlegged version of Bill Withers' 'Ain't No Sunshine', funk dancers 'Necessity' and 'Hey Man!', plus blue-eyed soul tune 'Play It Cool'. Recorded from the master tapes, remastered 2008, this album includes the original cover artwork.

Review: Having debuted on Omega Supreme back in 2013 with a fine funk nugget on a split 7" with Moon B, London native Sven Atterton returns with a much more extensive display of his modern funk mastery. At eight tracks long, The Cove is wedged snugly between an EP and a fully fledged album and is rife with the sort of funk you want to hear soundtracking a warm evening as the sun is fades into the distance. Atterton's sophisticated brand of funk is clear from the off, as the title track veers into view and takes you on a journey anchored by the artist's refine funk slap bass. "Always Remember" and "Seventh Heaven" stand out on first listen but this is a set you need to let sink in over time.

Review: We've been steadily teased by Bastard Jazz with a slow flow of singles but the time has come to reveal B Bravo's whole debut album... And he hasn't disappointed. A supreme cosmic boogie experience throughout, Bravo flexes around the funk/house/hip-hop axis with sunshine synths, loose swinging drums, heavyweight talkbox action and oodles of funk and timely displays of sensitivity. Highlights that really showcase the soul spectrum B Bravo explores range from the Chromeo-style party jam "I'm For Real" to the horn-hazed tinkling "LA Nights" to the dreamy west coast house struts and wriggles of "Summer Love". Sure fire summer silver lining.

Review: The Baker Brothers have been chipping away at this album for the past two years, trying to carve a new sound for themselves, partly through the beautiful vocals of Vanessa Freeman, as well as through collaborative work with individual brass-players. 'We were originally well into our gritty funk instrumentals, however, beating our instruments to death wasn't proving musically satisfying. We believe that if you're not moving forwards, you just slide backwards.'

Review: Sol Set is a Detroit-based collective, an amalgamation of composers, musicians, artists and vocalists brought together by producer John Beltran, whose new label All Good Music chooses its debut album for its inaugural release. John Beltran and Shane Donnelly preside over seven sumptuous and confident slices of modern, sub-kissed soul and Latin sure to put a smile on anyone's face, even those of us faced with an altogether more British summer. Influences range from the Steve Wonder-style double vocals of 'Bliss Mode' to the South American 'Rhythm of the Sun', which echoes the beach bum haziness of Jorge Ben, but the vibe remains joyful and skillfully yet effortlessly executed throughout. Gorgeous.

Review: Edwin Birdsong's self-titled album was originally released in 1978 on Philadelphia International Records and very much captured the spirit of the great disco era. By then, Birdsong was already a significant figure at the cult label having proven himself as both a songwriter and producer. The album features several tracks that became dance floor staples such as 'Cola Bottle Baby,' 'Kunta Dance' and 'Goldmine,' each packed with infectious funk grooves perfect for partying. Famously, 'Cola Bottle Baby' was later sampled by Daft Punk in their smash hit 'Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger'. Although the album didn't chart, it remains a prized find for disco and soul heads.

many dance music genres, as well as being essential in their own right. His latest project is this collection of 45s which have all been put out separately over the year. Also included are two brand new tunes and as ever the multi-instrumentalist and producer really flexes his muscle from front to back. There are big horns, strident groves and crisp boom bap beats with guests MCs such as Craig G, Ash The Author and vocalists such as Swaby from The Heavy all adding their own weight to the project.

All wrapped up in Bosq's intoxicating dancefloor twist across the eight tracks we're hip-slinking to piano-stroking "Aquarembe", we're nodding and shaking to the sweet skanks of "San Jose 51", we're getting deep, down and slo-mo to the smouldering "Ron Blanco Con Coco" and whole load more. It was a gig a year after they had their big break thorough, which had marked them out as the only English acid jazz band who could play tight, kicking tunes without slipping into bland lift music. Shibuya 357 is the only live capture of this vital era, with all the big tunes played including 'Never Stop', 'Dream Come True', 'Stay This Way' and 'Don't Let It Go To Your Head'. James Brown's appropriately entitled Night Train - Mighty Instrumentals album is a high-class assembly of plenty of potent, hard-hitting funk as well as more tender and slow-burning soul sounds. These timeless, loveably lo-fi joints have plenty of low end heft to cut through modern dance floras while also offering up some authentic and original funk allure. It comes on nice heavyweight wax so sounds brilliantly loud and clear.

Review: James Brown represented what may well be the greatest and yet most contradictory career in the history of pop. His most enduring invention was undoubtedly the music we now know as funk. In the mid-sixties James Brown ignited a pop music revolution with the release of "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag." He followed through with classics such as "I Got You", "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose", "Sex Machine", "Super Bad" and many more, effectively bringing the whole thing home. Music shaped by melody gave way to music dominated by rhythm; as dry as it may sound, this in fact marked the birth of modern dance music and would decisively influence generations of music lovers. In 2006 a select group of international producers, musicians and DJs set out to pay tribute to "Soul Brother Number One." For once, "The Hardest Working Man In Show Business" was able to kick back and let others do the work. The result of this project is a collection of fascinating remixes of James Brown's classic hits. The variety of approaches in these reworkings is outstanding; each artist explores his own personal "James Brown cosmos" and leaves behind an exceptional musical fingerprint.

Review: Soul On Top has always been one of James Brown's more surprising and under celebrated albums. It was released in 1970, at a time when the Godfather of Soul was at the peak of his powers. Yet while most of Brown's releases of the period showcased his thrusting brand of sexually charged funk, Soul On Top saw him cover jazz, soul and big band standards in the company of Louie Belson's 18-piece "jazz orchestra". While hardly revolutionary - unlike, say, many of his albums of the time - the combination of Brown's impassioned vocals and Oliver Nelson's swinging arrangements still sounds fantastic. The cover of Brown's own "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" is particularly potent, and almost worth the admission price alone.

They do so with new album Frontier's Edge on the newly launched label Diamond West. It comes on both nice opaque lime vinyl, and here as a plain black slice of wax. Across five cuts it has their famously tight grooves under pining each track and the whole thing is said to have been written in just a few days. The lead single and title track is a menacing head banger with bone rattling guitar and tejano-flavored horns. Another fine outing from this golden group.

Review: Byron Lee was an important part of Jamaican music from his first appearance in the 60s and onwards. Amongst his bustling back catalogue is this cheery classic from 1980, which keeps the heart and soul of ska alive, with an emphasis on the soul. The rhythms are reliably skanking throughout, whether stopping by the melancholic 'Shoobe Doobe Doo' or the chirpy 'Bend Down Low'. This is ska in its truest sense, with an infectious energy which speaks universally to young and old, hip and square. You can also hear the strong US RnB roots of the music in Lee's songwriting, and it tugs at the heart strings in just the same way. Grab an immaculate album of honest, earnest songwriting magic with all the irrepressible joy of Jamaica coursing through its veins.

Review: Hot off the back of being sampled by Dre, Italian scorers and all-round funkateers Calibro 35 lay down their seventh album in as many years. The eerie sci-fi opener "74 Days After Landing" sets the cosmic tone before we're pinged between planets like space debris on "Bandits On Mars" and establish positive satellite link ups with Africa from our space base on "Ungawa Bay Launch Complex". Deeper into our intergalactic mission we get paranoid alien fear to the organ-tickling Iron Butterfly-style sounds of "An Asteroid Called Death" and get poignantly homesick to the sweeping strings of "A Future We Never Lived". The album closes with "Serenade For A Satellite", a sparse funeral dirge of a closure, we realise there's no way home... But if you're stranded in space with just this album, things could be a lot worse.

Review: Best known for their near-pornographic funk classic "Jungle Fever," The Chakachas were actually a group of Belgian-based studio musicians. They first appeared during the early '60s, recording a playful mixture of Latin music, jazz, and European-style exotica. "Jungle Fever" played more to dance-club patrons than radio listeners, which helped it endure into the disco years; it was also heavily sampled by the hip-hop generation.

Review: 1983's Rive Gauche by Philippe Chany has been lost in the depths of time and, until now, many greedy second-hand sharks have been keeping its price way up high. This little synth-pop marvel is a sampler's dream, containing beautiful riffs here and there, and what is most alluring about it is its total detachment from any one genre. In fact, there are noticeable touches of all things Balearic in here, and many of its tunes could the perfect accompaniment to disco, boogie or even expansive DJ sets. With a little subtle nod to funk, Chany's album is one of those veritable one-offs, the sort of albums that are in a category of their own. A stunning reissue, once again, by Dark Entries.

A founding member of Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band and Kid Creole & The Coconuts, this legendary Puerto Rican producer drops his first in some two decades, spanning funk, salsa, samba and disco but delivered with contemporary production sheen from UK Producer E-Love (plus some additional knob twiddles from the always impressive Lee Douglas) that hits you hard thanks to the densely packed rhythms that run throughout every track. Listening to the album as a whole is a rewarding and enjoyable experience, but typically for a Rong release the majority of tracks here are equally ripe for club play. The intricate polyrhythmic chug of "He Wants To Make To Himself" and the rasping Diwali Latin techno shudder of "Bundas Bom" in particular stand out as tracks that would demand your attention on the dancefloor.

Review: Best known for being the backing band for countless soul singers - most notably Emilia Sisco, Willie West and Thee Baby Cuffs - Timmion Records regulars Cold Diamond & Mink have finally been given a chance to take centre stage. "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow" is the tight funk and soul combo's debut album and contains ten killer cuts from the Finnish combo in their usual jazz-flecked 1960s/early '70s funk and soul sound. Highlights are plentiful from start to finish, with the hazy bustle of "Remember Me", the super-sweet and glistening "Ain't That Love" and rush-inducing "This Is What Love Looks Like!" amongst our current favourites.

Review: 45 years after this 45 first surfaced it makes it back onto 45rpm. It is a stone cold north soul classic whose story starts when celebrated UK producer and songwriter Ian Levine linked up with Chicago studio wizards Paul Wilson and Danny Leak and vocalists Barbara Pennington, LJ Johnson and Evelyn Thomas. The results gave Levin his UK chart debut and encouraged him to work with Barbara Pennington once again on the huge '24 Hours A Day'. Aimed squarely at the booming US disco scene it was an immediate hit with hits high speed grooves and relentless strings, stunning vocal and rich production. Here it is presented with a second version of the same tune featuring a male vocalist. Gold.

Review: Recorded in 1978 but lovingly excavated from the vaults and remastered by Trad Vibe records, this third album by French band Cortex is a wealth of funky delights. Like Steely Dan, the core of Cortex consisted of pianist Alain Mion and drummer Alain Gandolfi, but for recording their number was swelled by a host of session musicians. Combining fusion with pop and rock melodies, they seriously sound like they were in the same zone as Stevie Wonder circa "Songs In The Key of Life" - the use of synth basslines and funky clavinets in particular recall the great one.
Recalling another great lost album, Shggie Otis's Inspiration Information, the atmosphere is tight and warm as songs like "Images" follow some superb jazzy chord changes. "La Bulle" is a sexy and slow rocky number that owes a debt to Isaac Hayes, and sounds like the kind of thing Air listened to around the time of Moon Safari. The uptempo disco of "Running From You" is made slightly camp due to the clipped English language vocals, but it's still a hell of a tune (ideally suited for a cosmic Todd Terje edit). Closing track "Matin Gris" is the most downtempo thing on the album and a fitting send-off, with the glorious analogue phasing on the synths proving a real highlight. This is funky French rock at its best, and very deserving of a reissue and a whole new audience.

Review: Dark Entries is humbled to continue digging through the archives of legendary producer Patrick Cowley. While best known for his production on chart-topping cybernetic disco anthems such as Sylvester's 'You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)' or his own 'Menergy', Cowley, who passed away from AIDS-related illness in 1982, left us with a substantial body of work. Since 2009, Dark Entries has been working with Cowley's friends and family to shed light on the lesser known facets of this singular artist's output. This has resulted in a string of celebrated archival albums, including Catholic (featuring Jorge Socarras), School Daze, Muscle Up, Afternooners, and the recent Mechanical Fantasy Box. Some Funkettes, the latest addition to this series, is a collection of previously unreleased cover songs recorded from 1975-1977. These raw, unembellished tributes both showcase Cowley's early musical interests and chart the development of his production techniques.

Review: He's Coming was the sole album released by Divinity, a gospel-fired vocal soul group masterminded by Lee Moore. In truth, the 1989 set has remained largely overlooked until now, despite the unfussy and occasionally inspired quality of its tracks. Happily, you can now judge the album for yourself thanks to this tasty reissue from Still Music's reissue-focused Past Due offshoot. It's in many ways typical of the soul scene at the time - albeit with a stronger gospel influence - meaning a mixture of slow jams and sing-alongs built on gentle drum machine beats, live bass and guitar, and the sort of chiming synthesizer melodies that were all the rage at the tail end of the '80s.

Review: Ed Upton's DMX Krew output as always been heavily rooted in electro, but he's not averse to turning his hand to vintage-sounding synth-funk and electropop when the mood takes him. It's that mode the Bedford-born producer is in on Party Life, his second album for long-serving Munich stable Permanent Vacation. Featuring his own spoken and sung vocals, pleasingly authentic '80s-sounding synths and bubbly basslines throughout, Party Life very much lives up to its title, delivering a swathe of catchy, ear-pleasing cuts that are more fun than, well, something extremely fun. Highlights include bubbly P-funk pop number 'Show Me', revivalist new jack swing number 'Anything' and wonderfully electrofunk jam 'Party Life', which is also presented in a deliciously delay-laden 'Dub' mix mode at the end of side two.

Review: Don Leisure's last album in 2017 was a real cult classic for hip hop and beat lovers. First World Records have finally got the follow up ready, and the much anticipated Shaboo Strikes Back does not leave anyone disappointed. It stretches out over 25 tracks and each one is a balmy and heady mix of fuzzy synths, wooden drum hits and smart samples that take in everything from serene strings to old soul vocals. It's a widescreen listen with loose tambourines dangled over gypsy funk synths on 'Shaboo Strikes Back' while 'Sugar Cane Juice' is a more edgy hip-hop cut. Super stuff.

Review: Moussa Doumbia was a saxophonist, arranger and composer who used African American funk as his main inspiration during the 1970s. Living in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Moussa recorded audacious music for a restricted public, with the help of two French American producers, Cathy and Albert Loudes. Moussa Doumbia's original synthesis of funk and African rhythms is comparable to Fela Kuti's, Poly Rythmo's or Ebo Taylor's. The music industry and the media never really gave a chance to Moussa Doumbia. His discography was as hard to get as his story was to tell. But his work definitely deserves full acknowledgment and respect, not just because he was an original powerful saxophonist, but also because he never gave up on expressing himself in the way he wanted, melting cultures together in an original modern way. 'Keleya' is out on Oriki Music.

Review: In 1971, in the midst of America's conflict in Vietnam, the US army held a 'battle of the bands' contest and showcased the two winning bands in a promotional album. East Of Underground, the gritty runner-up, managed to capture the spirit of America with their sweet-soul covers of Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield and Funkadelic. The quality of the recording is superior, as is the musicianship: the falsetto harmonies, the gritty guitar, and the devouring drums. This is an excellent album out on Wax Poetics.

Review: El Trio was Pocho Lapouble, Ricardo Lew and Adalberto Cevasco, a collective of seventies jazz musicians from Argentina. Their Todo En Su Medida Y Armoniosamente album is a cult classic from 1974 which marked them out as some of South America's most important artists and an original copy will cost you upwards of L350. It is a fusion of soul, jazz, a little folk and plenty of funk. Tracks like 'Albarraseis' are earthy and organic affairs that take you to the Argentine countryside, while 'Quien Se Llevo A Mi Negra?' is a more funky and rocking beat for the clubs. The record has aged well and still sounds fresh all these years later.

Those expecting his usual sample-heavy and dusty MPC house vibe are in for a surprise here on Hold Music Vol. 2, where he explores more downtempo styled music that sounds like GM MIDI files from the early '90s, or perhaps like the name suggests, some customer service hold music in the vein of the Cisco theme. Disgruntled customers can calm down to the chilled groove of 'Reset your Strategy', or instead just light one up and imagine themselves backpacking across the middle of America on 'Original Canyon', or just feel like they can levitate up to outer space - after waiting an eternity for an agent to answer their billing complaint - on 'Invested, Succeeded'.

Review: Ferry Djimmy is quite the character - he is a mysterious Afrobeat figure who also was a former schoolteacher, boxer, Jacques Chirac's bodyguard, and well as being a legendary Beninese musical visionary. He recorded this album sometime in the mid-1970s in support of the revolutionary leader of Benin at the time - Mathieu Kerekou. A fire is reported to have turned all but 200 copies to dust so it is mega rare and expensive to get an original. Acid Jazz reissues it here in all its fiery, lo-fi, gnarly Afrobeat glory. This is a fully licensed project with all new and in-depth sleeve notes by Florent Mazzoleni.

Review: The Stone LP is what really made Billy Green the artist that he is today. Starting off as a rhythm and blues guitar player back in the '60s, the cult movie saw him move onto more experimental territories, and enter the broad genre that is referred to as 'prog-rock'. This album is much more than that, however, and the opening track "Eco Blue / Toadstrip" is a clear signal of the madness and experimentation that's to quickly follow suit on the remainder of the LP. You have everything from fast percussion sequences, to gnarly guitar riffs, and distorted voices, all wrapped in an early, gritty electronic bed of sound. This one is clearly for the samplers, a diggers dream come true; and now available again in its original format. Recommended.

Review: Arguably Isaac's finest release, his sophomore album is just four tracks long but with two 10+ minute workouts on there, it's not the size of tracklist that counts. Famously igniting with his cover of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Walk On By" (a tune that found huge favour with Wu Tang many years later), it's 12 minutes of audio splendour that every collection should not be without. Ticking all the right Memphis boxes along the way, we're treated to the thriving uptempo funk, deep crooning, knicker-dropping soul and powerful spoken word blues that builds with an 18 minute dramatic crescendo. Truly seminal.
