On the edgier sounding flip, meanwhile, a female MC spits with impressive ferocity while a lovely warm - and somewhat familiar - analogue-edge loop works its magic. Both are key components for use at different points in the jam, some badly needed heavy weaponry that Donald Trump can't withdraw from service here.

Review: London's Mysticisms label spill valorous guts in issuing this new dub and breakbeat crossover record from Dub Specialists. Having emerged from te potent 1980s-90s fallouts that enshrouded the pioneering digital roots label Conscious Sounds, Dub Specialists tracked the storied meeting-of-minds that was and still is Douglas Waldrop, Piers Harrison, and Stuart "Chuggy" Leath. This time, the trio are heard teaming up with DJ Millie McKee and studio brain Matt Bruce to formate yet another splinter cell, as missionaries of Conscious Sounds' digital mission: to explore samplers and videogame sounds in dub and funk. Using an Atari 1040 running Cubase and armed with a Soundcraft mixer, this latest iteration hears drum loops and reggae basslines played over funk samples and layered with Petter's chords, crafting a series of short, DJ-worthy heaters. The result is unhindered by expectation and breaks many calcified digidub moulds, as on 'Funkin Dub', where speak n' spell garblings meet downtown funk licks and sonorant snare whacks.

Review: Jamaican singer Michael Rose reunites with Sly & Robbie across 12 tracks recorded in the early 90s, now given a first vinyl pressing via TABOU1. Best known for his work with Black Uhuru during their late 70s to mid-80s run, Rose brings the same clipped phrasing and distinctive tone to productions that favour machine-programmed rhythms and restrained arrangements. 'Coke Is A Joke' and 'Monkey Business' lean into digital textures without overwhelming the vocal while 'Come Home' and 'Car Wars (Ambient)' explore more spacious and effects-driven territory. Sly & Robbie's approach avoids easy throwbacks. There's clarity to the mix with each element dialled in for precision instead of weight. 'Marcus Garvey' and 'African Girl' return to roots motifs but the surrounding production keeps things forward-facing. Rose's delivery remains intact: urgent, measured and instantly recognisable. Review: This first-ever CD anthology of Culture's earliest singles captures the trio in their purest, most incendiary form. Formed in 1976 by lead singer Joseph Hill, with Albert Walker and Roy Dayes, the Jamaican group emerged under the name The African Disciples before becoming Culture and signing with Joe Gibbsione of Kingston's most revered producers. What followed was a run of revolutionary 7"s and 12"s, including the seismic 'Two Sevens Clash', whose apocalyptic prophecy shook the reggae landscape. These recordingsinow collected in full, dub sides and allichart the group's 1977 to 1981 run with Gibbs, a period widely regarded as their peak. Tracks like 'Zion Gate' and 'See Dem a Come' show their power not just as writers of militant roots reggae, but as spiritual messengers, blending dread prophecy with hypnotic riddims. Even in dub form, these versions retain urgency and weight, anchored by Hill's unshakeable vocal tone and Gibbs's rich, bass-forward production. Later work with Sonia Pottinger would push their sound further afield, but what's here is raw, righteous and definitive. Eight tracks make their CD debut, finally doing justice to an era of singles that shaped both Culture's legacy and the wider trajectory of roots reggae itself.

Review: Berlin-based duo ULURU return with a razor-sharp two-tracker, steeped in the broken funk and low-slung swing that's become their calling card. On the A-side, 'Squabble Funk' opens with disjointed bleeps and dry drums, gradually assembling itself into a strutting, syncopated groove that's equal parts post-rave and electro-funk. It's a tightrope walk of tension and swagger, landing somewhere between Detroit's machine soul and West London's bruk diaspora. Flip it for 'Dogfish', where things take a deeper turnijagged snares and whirring FX coil around a bulbous bassline, creating a sense of unease that never quite resolves. Though the record references the sacred formation of Uluru, the message isn't didacticimore a subtle reminder that resistance and care can inform even the most jacked dancefloor fare.

A completely solo outing, written, played and arranged by the legendary East London bassist, it's a deep, heady listen steeped in the influence of Lee Perry and King Tubby - all heavy atmospheres, tactile delays and bottomless bass. It's a new release from one of dub's great outliers, with every frequency tuned for sound system clarity. 'Dub In The East' sets the tone with hypnotic simplicity, while 'Tyson Dub Remix' and 'Existential Dub' expand the palette with warped melodica, submerged vocals and Wobble's unmistakable bass lines pulsing through the mix. 'Losing All Sense Of Balance Dub' and 'Tragic Slavic Dub' are deeper still i lurching, meditative and slyly melodic. With sleeve art by Wobble himself and expert mastering by Anthony Chapman, this is a dub LP in the classic mould, but fully in Wobble's voice. Review: Jamaican vocalist Earl Sixteen’s 1980 recording finally lands on 7” vinyl, produced by Earl Morgan of The Heptones and recorded at Harry J Studios. The vocal cut rides a familiar steppers rhythm also heard on tracks by Lacksley Castell and Black Uhuru — crisp, driving, and minimal in arrangement. Sixteen’s delivery is measured that sits just above the groove without crowding the mix. The B-side features a dub version mixed by Sylvan Morris. It’s restrained, focusing on dropouts and echo placement rather than full reconstruction. Both sides maintain clarity and space, typical of the era’s late roots sound. A concise, well-pressed archival issue that foregrounds the essentials: voice, rhythm, and atmosphere.

Review: Jamar McNaughton aka Jamaican dancehall icon Chronixx lives up to his own name, leaving us with chronic catatonia after we find ourselves all too quickly and easily engrossed in his new single, 'Never Give Up'. A stripped-back, slow-burner rocksteady exclaimer rolled through soft percussion, spaceflight keys and a quietly unshakeable hook, it carries a steadfast message, one that lends associatively well to the guesting productive hand of fellow producer and SAULT mastermind Inflo. And what do we have it: just days before mastering the A, Chronixx laid down a dub version, now also pressed solely on this limited 10". Review: First issued separately in 1969 on Downtown Records and produced by Dandy Livingstone (aka Brother Dan), this 7" recut remerges two much sought-after reggae cuts from the skinhead era. On the A-side is Desmond Riley's 'Skinheads A Message To You', a version of Dandy's own tune later revived in rudeboy form by The Specials, and delivered in Riley's understated yet insistent vocal style. The flip, 'Ain't That Loving You', finds him rework the Jimmy Reed classic into a strut-time early reggae rhythm, pairing raw soul sentiment with JA swing. Little is widely known about Riley beyond his handful of late 60s vocal singles, but his voice - clear, aching, unadorned - stands out among the countless one-shot singers of that time.

Review: Two-tone ska scallywags Bad Manners ruled the chart roost throughout the 1980s, racking up nine Top 40 hits and 111 weeks on the charts, fueled by a vary many memorable TotP appearance. By the late 80s, their chart success faded but they kept busy with Eat The Beat (1988), a collection of rarities and a standalone take on the 1969 Symarip track 'Skinhead Girl.' Later in 1989, Bad Manners offshoot Buster's All Stars released 'Skinhead Girl' with a fresh live ska twist, and this incurrent reissue of that flashpoint now also unveils the never-heard-before 'Skinhead Boy', which debuts in a foldout sleeve with liner notes by Lee Morris. Both songs are rife with nostalgia for a subculture mired in historic complication, and at times it's hard to distinguish whether the object of affection so considered is a real person or a representation of a genre and point in time: "she wore braces and blue jeans... she was mine."

Review: Rhoda Dakar, the London-born vocalist best known for fronting 2 Tone trailblazers the Bodysnatchers, returns with a new dub reinterpretation of her 2023 album, a collection that originally celebrated the art of the cover version through a lens of ska and reggae. Here, the songs are stripped to the bones i vocals drifting in and out like overheard conversations, dub FX spreading across the stereo field like rising smoke. It's not her first time engaging with the dub tradition, but it's the most immersive: 'The Man Who Dubbed The World' sets the tone with slow, stoned bass pressure, while tracks like 'Midnight Skank' and 'Dubbin' 'Round' make subtle work of rhythm and space, giving the performances just enough room to ghost their original forms. Dakar calls dub "a mix as performance", and you can hear that philosophy in the way she lets certain lines echo, not just through the delay but into memory i as if she's not just remixing songs, but re-listening to the sessions themselves, hearing what she missed the first time.

Review: French producer duo Dub Shepherds team up with Clermont-Ferrand vocalist Junior Roy for a nine-track set that follows the traditional showcase format: each vocal cut is paired with its dub. The A-side opens with 'Trodding On Jah Road' and 'Start a Revolution', both built on heavyweight rhythms and restrained instrumentation. Roy's delivery is clean and direct, rooted in 80s-style cadences without overplaying the retro angle. 'Fittest (Discomix)' stretches the format slightly, offering a longer vocal-to-dub transition. Side B begins with 'Problems' and its dub version, again prioritising balance over effects. 'Run' leans into a looser melodic structure, while the dub flips it into a more echo-driven space. The overall mix i handled by Jolly Joseph and Doctor Charty i keeps the low end upfront, but avoids excess. The dubs are labelled "Hardmix", though the approach stays disciplined: no over-saturated FX chains, just clean edits and steady pressure. A solid roots release from a studio clearly comfortable in its identity.
