With the duo's respective track records, you'd expect Someday World to be a bit of a cracker. Somewhat surprisingly, it's not quite as stunning as you might expect but there are enough brilliant moments to warrant further investigation. Check, for example, the slowly building sci-fi jazz madness of "When I Built This All", the jaunty, off-kilter beauty of the Different Trains-inspired "Strip It Down" and the textured, shoegaze-tinged "To Us All"; all three are simply superb.

Review: It's only natural that both The Hacker and HIV+ receive some attention on the excellent Oraculo Records, home to the very best in darkwave and all things post-everything. This particular tune, the fiery and tenebrous "Novo Disko", is actually from 2006, but it's one of those timeless tracks that cuts right to the core of industrial music; the glitchy, metallic beats, the distorted voices, and its general level of aggression are a perfect encapsulation of the genre. The remix from Alek Drive only does it more justice, thanks to its heavier techno pounce and magnificent extra injection of bass. This one's recommended!

Review: The Invisible Girls is the name of legendary new wave production duo Martin Hannett (famous for his work as producer for Joy Division, New Order and Buzzcocks) and Steve Hopkins's band, and also this new collection of rare and unreleased recordings made throughout their career. Many of them have reportedly never been heard before. In fact the first five tracks on the album are a selection of previously unreleased 'Moods' recorded at the famous Strawberry Studios between 1980 and 1987. Elsewhere there are rare solo tracks by Hannett plus fine collabs with Section 25, Pauline Murray, Nico and Crispy Ambulance.

Review: Stepping out alone rather than continuing on the band-focused route she is best known for (Phosphor, Minuit Machine), Helene de Thoury has long since proved that she's one of the most vital in darkwave, with 2019's 'Fierce' adding recent evidence. Here she presents nine remixes that showcase the versatility of her musical seeds - we wind up in proggy disco New Wave heaven pretty much instantly. Or at least by track three, 'Respect (New Soul)' with its emotionally charged, crystalline chords and deep timbre. The Milliken Chamber remix of the same track, removing superlatives to favour punchy, dancefloor-direct stuff, shows how much can be done with Hante's ingredients. 'Wild Animal' also gets multiple re-rubs, Fee Lion touching on minimal techno with nods to the heyday of twisted 7AM trance, Fragrance emphasising the melody but sticking in the club, and Aura Shred doing a cut and paste job with debts paid to EDM.

Review: Since delivering their superb debut album, Apero, on Night School, Happy Meals - AKA hardware-loving duo Suzanne Rodden and Lewis Cook - have barely put a foot wrong. Predictably, this sophomore full-length for new Optimo Music offshoot So Low is another inspired outing, even if it is notably more cosmic and mind-altering than their previous releases. Curiously, the set opens and closes with extended electronic tones capable of conjuring hallucinations in even the most sober of listeners. In between, you'll find the trippy, delay-laden drum machine beats, scattergun electronics and hazy new age synthesizer melodies of "May You Be The Mother - May You Be The Sun", the cosmic ambient vibrations of "Full Ashram Emerging Theme" and the drifting electronic exotica of "Every Moment is a Birth", which is little less than sublime.

Review: Minimal Wave pay homage to Hard Corps front woman Regine Fetet, who passed away over a decade ago, with this limited issue of rare out-takes and demos from the band's archives. Fans of Minimal Wave should be more than familiar with Hard Corps, a short lived 80s act whose hard-edged industrial sound was playfully balanced out by Fetet's delicate French vocals, with the band subject of the Clean Tables Have To Be Burnt retrospective last year as well as featuring on the second Minimal Wave Tapes compilation issued in cahoots with Stones Throw. Initially released on cassette format, Rarities pulls together nine Hard Corps gems with "Killing Fields" and "C'est Pas Moi" particular highlights.

Review: The unwritten rule with any release from the Minimal Wave camp is that the illuminating nature of the music and the delightful way it's presented will almost always be matched by the story behind it - something that is undeniably true of their latest release, a collection of tracks from mid 80s UK synth act Hard Corps. Fronted by towering vocalist Regine Fetet, the band surfaced in 1984 with the two track single Dirty (the title track is included here) gained the studious attentions of John Peel (RIP) before signing with a major label and granted the chance to work with two 80s production titans in Martin Rushent and Daniel Miller. Hard Corps disbanded in 1989, having only released the one single Je Suis Passee amidst malcontent at their lack of support from Polydor. Clean Tables Have To Be Burnt collates six tracks from the Hard Corps canon, with the aforementioned "hits" accompanied by unheard archival material that will pique the fancy of any self regarding Minimal Wave fan.

Review: Paul Hardcastle's self-titled 1985 debut receives a special reissue for Record Store Day 2025 in celebration of its 40th anniversary. Remastered at AIR Mastering for the occasion, this synth-pop milestone showcases Hardcastle's innovative fusion of electro, jazz-funk and socially conscious themes. It is of course anchored by the chart-topping anti-war anthem '19' but also features standout tracks like 'Just For Money,' 'Rainforest' and 'Don't Waste My Time' featuring Carol Kenyon. The album comes from a key moment in '80s electronic music this reissue reaffirms Hardcastle's enduring influence on it.
