Down That Road
Down That Road (hand-stamped 12" + insert)
Cat: WB 009. Rel: 06 Dec 19
  1. Down That Road (6:45)
  2. Down That Road (Apiento & Tepper dubbed It) (6:59)
  3. Down That Road (Padapella) (6:02)
Review: Apiento is back on World Building with another excellently soul infused deep house gem that builds on the much loved "Things You Do For Love" 7". Subtle acid flecked bassline snakes in and out of the crisp drums as buttery smooth, heartbroken lyrics up top get you where it hurts. It's hugely sophisticated and absorbingly understated. Apiento & Tepper's dubbed out version recalls the early work of the one and only Larry Heard before a beatless Padapella closes things out for those who want to really make a dramatic emotional statement pre, mid or post-set.

Leads & Bites Vol 3
  1. Argy & Jerome Sydenham - "Whisper Track" (dub) (5:13)
  2. Jerome Sydenham - "Purple Beech" (5:59)
  3. Janne Tavi & Jerome Sydenham - "Street Jazz" (5:27)
  4. Herb Martin - "Soul Drums" (Jerome Sydenham Raw dub) (5:32)
Review: Ibadan Records doesn't release anywhere near as many EPs as it once did, but those that the label does put out tend to be action-packed and of the highest quality. Their latest - the third edition in their occasional "Leads & Bites" multi-artist series - certainly fits the bill. Label founder Jerome Sydenham is undoubtedly the star of the show. He first joins forces with Argy on a hypnotic late night Dub of basement-bothering big room workout "Whisper Track", before going solo on the off-kilter, minor key deep house brilliance of "Purple Beech". Over on side B he collaborates with Janne Tavi on the "Weekend"-sampling deep piano house flex of "Street Jazz", before layering up toasty Rhodes riffs and sweaty, cymbal heavy jazz-house beats on his "Raw Dub" of Herb Martin's "Soul Drums".

The Message (For You)
  1. Alex Attias & Justin Chapman & Hajime Yochizawa - "The Message (For You)" (10:00)
  2. Alex Attias & Mark De Clive Lowe - "The Waiting Game" (7:57)
Review: Since -re-establishing his early noughties Visions Inc imprint in 2017, Swiss scene stalwart Alex Attias has delivered some of his most impressive and musically dexterous material. He's at it again here on a two-tracker that showcases his love of studio collaboration. Our pick of the pair is exuberant, life-affirming A-side "The Message (For You)", a sublime slab of loose-limbed Latin house soulfulness featuring vocals from Justin Chapman and keys-work from Japanese artist Hajime Yochizawa. Attias' old pal Mark De Clive-Lowe lends a hand of equally positive and sparkling flipside "The Waiting Game", adding all manner of jazz-funk inspired sound synths to a fine, rubbery deep house workout.

Cat: CB 05. Rel: 01 Jul 19
  1. Chekov - "Math" (Squared mix) (5:26)
  2. Doppelate - "Rreal" (5:59)
  3. Camin - "Duct" (4:37)
  4. Howes - "BED" (6:07)
Review: On the A1 Chekov follows up their moves on Peach Discs and Timedance with a proper peak timer, they've been described by Ben UFO as 'king of the build up' and that's evident on this one. At the A2 London's Doppelate makes their Cong Burn debut with an elegant tech-house roller. Fresh from Russia's underground is Camin, on this, his debut 12" release he drops a useful tool which squeezes between electro and techno. Cong Burn founder Howes closes the B side with some warm hypnosis that could have landed in the golden era of Workshop.

  2. Duckett - "Lost In Israel" (5:06)
  3. Lack - "Track 3" (8:21)
  4. Haddon - "Anabiosis" (3:00)
Review: Cong Burn continues to exercise one of the most promising instincts for future-minded music on this, their third release. It's surprising they haven't done more previously, considering the maturity of their curation, but either way the quality remains at an all time high here, leading in with some light and liquefied 4/4 sonics from Chekov before pirouetting into one of Duckett's illustrious abstractions around the techno blueprint. Label regular Lack is back on side B with the stern and punchy "Track 3," and then Haddon finishes the record off with "Anabiosis," a densely textured, slow creeping trip of a track.

  3. Nelly Wilson - "Hapenis & Pleisure" (5:51)
  4. Herb Flavor - "Para Dice" (8:39)
Review: It's been a while, but finally Dessert Island Discs is back with another batch of feel-good party cakes hot and steaming out of the oven. There's a bunch of highly skilled patisserie chefs on hand to whip up the goods, from James Curd with the ludicrously steamy acid funker "This Girl Is Hot" to DJ Confit with the heavy looping disco house of "Yellow Day". Nelly Wilson is bringing some sassy disco edit business to the B side with the utterly infectious "Hapenis & Pleisure", and then Herb Flavor seals the deal with the fierce stomp of "Para Dice". If you want four full fat treats to get people popping, you can't go wrong with this one.

  2. Hot Coffee - "On The Verge" (6:24)
  3. M. Vaughan - "Man 2 Man" (6:48)
  4. Tilman - "A Day To Remember" (6:32)
Review: Super Tuff is a relatively new concern hailing from Brooklyn, committed to presenting a broad range of talent from the more curious corners of the house spectrum. On this third release we're introduced to the delightful sound of DJ Heure, who unfurls wonderful pattering percussion, jazzy notes and a mellow, ambient finish to pull at the heartstrings. There's a slightly more forthright thump to Hot Coffee's "On The Verge", but it's still a dusky twist on the typical deep house formula. Label boss M. Vaughan brings things a little more upfront on "Man 2 Man", and top-drawer German producer Tilman weaves a rich and invigorating tale with his swooning "A Day To Remember".

Burnt
Burnt (12")
Cat: HF 001. Rel: 02 Jun 15
  1. Burnt (6:11)
  2. Hard To Breathe (6:44)
Review: If the smiley face clad centre label wasn't a sizeable enough clue, Happy Family is a new project from New York staples Eric Duncan and Justin Vandervolgen which sees the pair try their hand at acid house. Both are closely associated with disco edits of course, but if you've seen either DJ you'll know they are well up on all forms of dance music. This expertise is deployed perfectly on the two tracks here, with "Burnt" a relentless exercise in strobelit 303 madness that is a no brainer for the sweatiest part of a DJ set. They tone it down a bit on "Hard To Breathe" which despite the title is an altogether looser production with plenty of room between the tumbling drums and hypnotic lead synth lines.

Disco Selections Volume 1

  2. Carlo - "The Swindler" (6:32)
  3. Hotmood - "Magical Flight" (5:57)
  4. Rees - "The Way You Move" (6:04)
Review: We may not be able to gather to dance outdoors under a blazing sun or a blanket of stars, but there's no harm in a little musical daydreaming. That's what the latest multi-artist Ravenelli Disco Club release is all about: summery escapism that comes with a big dollop of rush-inducing disco release. Ethyene sets the tone with the colourful boogie-house fusion of "Let Love" - all twinkling synth motifs, echoing percussion hits, thickset grooves and hazy vocal samples - before Carlo raises the temperature via some jazzy deep house heaviness in the vein of Derrick Carter's "boompty" era. Over on side B, Hotmood's "Magical Flight" is a surging, string-drenched disco-house roller, while Rees' "The Way You Mood" is a tooled-up take on what sounds like a classic Philadelphia International cut.

  2. Keraw - "Keutra" (7:24)
  3. Oden & Fatzo - "Titontesttu" (5:53)
  4. Herr Krank - "Fight Your Fears" (6:13)
Review: Lyon might be known as the gastronomical capital of France, but the Undergroove label is doing a fine job of putting the city on the radar of tech house fans. This fourth release is another futuristic trip that kicks off with the punchy drum programming but squelchy synths of Feel the Jam's "UK Breakfast." Keraw gets you in a spin with the quickened and sleek grooves of his "Keutra" then Oden & Fatzo combine to triumphant effect on the high speed tech funk cut that is "Titontesttu" with its gorgeously freeform bassline taking centre stage. Herr Krank's "Fight Your Fears" closes out the adventure with an ever rising acid line that eventually leads to intergalactic tech house lift off. You best strap in!

  4. Ghetto Sunrise - "Mocujin" (6:17)
Review: Promising new label Criminal Practice is based in Kiev, Ukraine and headed up by DJs and producers Ghetto Sunrise, Hopper Field and Roman Khropko. They're certainly aren't messing around on their inaugural release, getting straight down to business in bold fashion. Grec serves up the hypnotic blip, blurp and bleep of "Worm" on the A side, followed by the infectious retro techno bounce of Sasha Zlykh's "Coulda Play For Dynamo" which will appeal to fans of Art Of Dark or Time Passages. On the flip, bust out those robotic dance moves to the sci-fi electro breaks of Hopper Field's "Big Ben" and take a trip down memory lane courtesy of Ghetto Sunrise's early UK techno tribute that is "Mocujin".

  1. Greymatter - "Give Up (Never Gonna)" (feat Sophie Brown)
  2. KRL - "Burn" (feat Sarah Blake)
  3. Homeboy - "Spacelift"
  4. Ishmael - "Lumo"
Review: The lupine London lot known simply as Wolf Music keep up the end of year pressure, issuing a 22nd edition of the split artists 12"s that have helped establish them as one of the capital's most trusted house music outlets. Wolf Music regulars Greymatter, KRL and Ishmael are present and correct and there's space for a label debut in the shape of Zagreb based producer Homeboy. Greymatter pulls rank and leads off with a wonderfully chunky production in the shape of "Give Up" which features some killer keylines and a manipulated vocal from Sophie Brown with the end result sounding as memorable as MJ Cole's "Sincere". Not to be outdone, KRL teams up with a female vocalist too on "The Game" which features some shamelessly euphoric piano samples. Face down and Homeboy provides the peak time moment with "Spacelift" whilst Ishmael is in Mark E style beatdown mode on "Lumo" - those pads!

  3. Villa H2H - "Conspiracy Two" (7:33)
  4. Villa H2H - "Conspiracy Three" (4:46)
Review: Here's something to excite all those who like their stripped-back techno to come with a heavy dose of soul. It features Chilean minimal maestro Ricardo Villalobos join forces with Chez Damier and Ben Vedren's H2H project. On the A-side, Villalobos delivers a superb remix of "No More", wrapping lusciously soulful vocals and languid piano motifs around a typically bouncy and left-of-centre minimal techno rhythm. On the flip, Villalobos joins Damier and Verden to deliver a three-part "Conspiracy". Each of the three interpretations has its own distinctive vibe, but all deliver a near perfect balance between soul-flecked deep house, trippy tech-house, Chicago acid and the South American wonkiness that Villalobos does so well. In other words, it's a musical marriage made in Heaven.

  2. Anomal - "Silicon Ballet" (7:53)
  3. Frank Haag - "The Journey To Where You Already Are" (8:07)
Review: VBX might be best known for putting on some of the most twisted minimal techno parties in Europe - most notably at ADE - but their label arm is fast becoming just as well respected. This time out it is the painting of Frank Haag and Anomal who take care of a split EP. Haag's "A Dash Of The Diabolical" is a dark, grubby, driving minimal techno cut with a rugged bassline that never lets up, and his second offering "The Journey To Where You Already Are" is built on a slippery and piling drum loop that is overrun with alien life forms and warped vocal sounds. Anomal's "Silicon Ballet" meanwhile is a fusion of acid bass, spinning hi hats and punchy kicks perfectly designed to power the dance floor along.

  4. Derek Carr - "The Gap" (6:22)
Review: 20/20 Vision have firmly gaffa taped their flag to the electro antennae with "Exit Planet Earth", a new compilation series celebrating veterans and newcomers in the business of tweaked out machine funk. The Hacker is up first with "Positif/Negatif", a rubbery, FX-laden workout with plenty of uneasy space around the core rhythm section. 214 follows up with the decidedly creepy, sound design-embellished "Testy Robot". On the flip Reedale Rise brings something a bit livelier with the plush synth flex pinging through "Lux". Derek Carr completes the set with "The Gap", a lush slice of melancholic machine dreaming for mellower moments.

  3. Bound By Faith (Redemption dub) (7:51)
  4. Bound By Faith (instrumental mix) (6:52)
Review: Scott Fraser and Richard Sen launch a new project Hackney Vandal Patrol with this 12", tapping into their love of steamy US deep house from the early 90s. The mood is electric on "Bound By Faith", using a meandering vocal sample and organ keys over smoky jack beats and a throbbing bassline, while the "Bass Hit Mix" brings that pulsing low end to the front of the mix and strips everything but the beat back. The "Redemption Dub" strikes something of a balance between the two previous mixes, and then the "Instrumental" cuts the vocal but keeps the sweet and saucy organ line, so whichever bit of the track you like there's a mix for you.

  1. Buried Answers
  2. Buried Answers (Jamie Blanco remix)
  3. Literate
  4. Literate (Tiago Team Fumo remix)
Review: Not An Animal Records was formed in 2015 out of the ashes of the London-based party Bad Passion, and has thus far welcomed the likes of Man Power, Ess O Ess and Eric Duncan to release on the label. Now they turn to James Hadfield, a relatively new producer previously spotted on To Rack & Ruin and Me Me Me. On this four-tracker he deals in brooding synthwave tones mixed with classic jack track rhythms. "Literate" is just the kind of taut, sinister club creeper we can't get enough of, while "Buried Answers" takes a skippier but no less moody approach. On the remix front, Jamie Blanco takes the prize, turning "Buried Answers" into a bombastic slice of driving synth pop.

Review: Wild Oats proudly present the new EP from Kyle Hall entitled "Equanimity". This release marks the 10 year anniversary of Wild Oats and its only fitting that we celebrate with a release from the label boss himself on tonight's full moon. Along with the engineering treatment from "Chicago's very own" (C.V.O.) deep house legend, Glenn Underground, "Equanimity" takes on a new foundational sound and assembly that inspires some philosophical thoughts below:

Katastematic Pleasure is the epicurean philosophical concept that the magnitude of pleasure reaches its limit at the removal of all pain. In a sonic sense, this connects to the idea of subtractive equalization or the removal of unpleasant frequencies i.e. taking away the part of the sound you don't enjoy as much, in turn, leaving the pleasurable parts of the sound intact. Katestematic pleasure is about creating cleanliness and clarity in your life so that your experience is pleasurable by simply the virtue of being.

Solar/Lunar Duality: The Vinyl EP is divided into two planetary bodies. Side A i The "Solar Side" and Side B i "The Lunar" Side. The Sun's energy is one that is everlasting as long as its shining all that receives its rays will continue its growth and abundance. The Moon represents the nature of receptivity the feminine principle which captures the light energy of the sun and reflects it back and governs our physical natural cycles and tides of the waters both internally and externally. The cycles of the moon when we decide to to be attentive to its influence we start to know when to retreat when to rest , when to repair our selves and intuitively when to bloom express our vivaciousness and attract things to ourselves.

Cat: SJ U12R30. Rel: 25 Jun 20
  1. Now That I Got To Know You (8:57)
  2. Now That I Got To Know You (instrumental dub) (8:22)
Review: The honeyed, effortlessly soulful vocals of Reggie Hall have been a feature of Chicago house since the late 1980s, when he appeared on a Dance Mania release by Victor Romeo. He's released plenty of music since then, though this hook-up with Glenn Underground - who produced the music - and fellow house veteran Byron Stingily (who provided backing vocals) is still his first outing for almost 12 years. The A-side full vocal version is simply superb, with Hall's superb, impassioned, gospel-inspired vocals riding a bouncy, Osunlade style groove, jazzy guitars, sustained church organ chords and all manner of intricate musical details. Glenn Underground dons the CVO alias to deliver a slightly tougher, more groove-driven B-side "Dub" that nevertheless includes plenty of sun-bright musical warmth.

  4. Stocha
Review: The sixth installment on Malin Genie's self-titled label welcomes Will & Ink resident Yaleesa Hall into the fold. Regular collaborators Malin and Yaleesa have turned out plenty of joint 12"s in the past on Will & Ink and this very label, and they sound more comfortable and sonically aligned than ever on this mighty record. There's no messing with "Alpha Decay," a loose and lysergic dubby techno workout. "Tachyon" orbits a similar soundworld, but shears the fat away for a minimal palette that sounds powerful echoing around the ample space in the mix. "Muck" slips into freaky after hours house territory, and "Stocha" drops a massive Basic Channel dub techno chord around a whisper of a beat to devastating effect.

Review: Apart from a very limited under the radar release in 2015, it took Vincent Halliburton 13 years to deliver a follow-up to his 2002 debut single on Ferrispark "RM1x Files" (both records go for silly money). The Detroiter hasn't left it quite so long this time, with this alluring three-tracker appearing just four years after its predecessor. Clearly Halliburton believes in quality over quantity, because "Vibe Under A Different Frequency" is superb. Check first the swirling deep space chords, delay-laden vocal snippets and layered, Ron Trent style deep house percussion of the fittingly titled "On A Deep Groove", before gaping in awestruck wonder at the dreamy, deep and hypnotic "Going Away", which boasts some suitably breathy, out-there vocals from none other than Sade. He rounds things off in style via the groovy warmth and sun-kissed dancefloor positivity of "Go Down".

Remember EP (feat DJ Sports mix) (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SENSU 002. Rel: 30 Apr 18
  1. Remember (6:27)
  2. Rett (6:58)
  3. Rett (DJ Sports mix) (6:34)
  4. Inexplainable Inner Sadness (5:37)
Review: Georgian producer Hamatsuki appeared on GASP last year with the Uncertain Loops cassette release, but makes his vinyl debut on this damn fine 12" for the recently minted Sensu label. "Remember" is a rich, undulating swirl of deep house laden with melancholic pads, while "Rett" sports a sunnier tone for its own arsenal of soft, rounded synth tones. DJ Sports comes on board for a remix of "Rett" that plays with said synths and creates springy, computer jazz melodic threads out of them. "Inexplainable Inner Sadness" completes the set with another trip into warm, Chicago-indebted house tones for the introspective dancer.

Works On Sunday EP
Cat: FUSE 018 . Rel: 08 Jul 15
  1. Mind Blank (8:43)
  2. Works On Sunday (vinyl only) (7:47)
  3. Works On Sunday (Enzo Siragusa & Seb Zito remix) (6:44)
Review: Moscow Records boss Archie Hamilton appears this time on Enzo Siragusa's Fuse London imprint with these slices of rolling, Latin-infused tech-house for the beach party. This is the kind of stuff that lovers of Mindshake and Rawthentic will be all over. First up "Mind Blank" brings the tough yet sultry attitude that you could imagine playing peak time at Amnesia. "Works On Sunday" takes the tempo down a notch or two for something more suited to the afterhours, but just as sexy. There's also a remix of this on the flip by none other than label boss Siragusa with Seb Zito keeping the afterhours vibe intact but with a druggier, minimal take on things.

Driven EP
Driven EP (12")
Cat: FUSE 026. Rel: 01 Mar 17
  1. Driven To Distraction (7:52)
  2. Telegram (7:44)
  3. Channelled (vinyl Only) (7:43)
Review: Moscow Records boss Archie Hamilton is a long time friend of the FUSE London family, having previously contributed to a number of releases. Driven To Distraction, though, is his first FUSE outing since 2015. Interestingly, there's quite a bit of surprising variety amongst the three tracks; compare, for example, the shuffling tech-house grooves and flamenco guitars of B-side "Channelled", with the title track's bouncy, deep house/acid house fusion. "Telegram", where wilder TB-303 acid lines and dubbed-out riffs ride an undulating, late night groove, is also rather nifty. In other words, it's a solid EP containing tracks tailor-made for different dancefloor situations.

Direction EP
Cat: PLZ 021. Rel: 23 May 16
  1. Some Kind Of Arrangement (7:49)
  2. First Refusal (7:46)
Review: London's Archie Hamilton breaks away temporarily from his usual home of Fuse London to throw down some fine hi-tech minimalist grooves for prolific Frankfurt imprint Pleasure Zone. When considering that they've previously offered up the likes of Vid and Ali Nasser, you can appreciate the Romanian influence on this 12" too; Hamilton's sound is really developing well. On the A side "Some Kind Of Arrangement" has the funky and cyclical hypnotism that could have him likened to the likes of Barac while on the flip "First Refusal" is more deep down and drugged up; perfect for the morning set with its paranoid and low slung groove.

  2. False Leads (7:57)
  3. Under The Winter (feat Sio) (8:28)
  4. Mountains (feat Alex Hand) (7:34)
Review: Fast-rising house producer Mark Hand makes his bow on Serbian stable Soul Print Recordings. Surprisingly, it's the Belgrade label's first release of 2018. It's rather good, too, with opener "Midnight" - an impeccable fusion of yearning Motor City electronics, Larry Heard smoothness and impeccably soulful vocals by guest singer Greg Blackman - providing the undoubted highlight. There's plenty to tickle the fancy elsewhere across the EP, too, from the ultra-deep house/jazz-house fusion of the Sio-fronted "Under The Winter", to the rubbery synth-bass, jazzy electric piano solos and delay-laden horn solos of Alex Hand hook-up "Mountains". Stellar stuff all told.

The Kennel Club EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: FDR 003. Rel: 07 Sep 15
  1. Mark Hand - "Cold Feet" (5:40)
  2. Tom McConnell - "Juniper" (5:10)
  3. The Rutan - "Fable" (7:53)
  4. Fatdog - "Jaffa Cakes" (6:12)
Review: Fatdog Records returns after a break, offering contributions from 3 artists new to the label - The Rutan, Tom Mc Connell and Mark Hand. FDR003 offers a development from the deep house template on the last EP, this time taking us further into deeper Detroit territories. Mark Hand offers us Drexciyan techno in the form of 'Cold Feet'. The Rutan's 'Fable' sits somewhere between Vakula and some of Henrik Schwarz's earlier dub-house experiments, while Fat Dog takes us to the murky back alleys of his mind with 'Jaffa Cakes'. Finally Tom Mc.Connell's 'Juniper' takes us into wonkier groove Rhodes stylings which rounds off the EP very nicely indeed. Support by John Heckle, Afrikan Sciences, Lay-Far, Enrico (Neroli), Sonars Ghost (2000 Black), Burnski, Wolf Music
