Negativ Terminal Data (8:11)
Song For Louise (2:18)
Life's A Killer (part 1 & 2) (9:49)
Review: Mark Phillips and Rob Lawrence made some of the heaviest industrial music during the 80's, and certainly some of the best the UK has seen, under the name 5X0D. This 1982 reissue was way beyond its time back then, bringing together the energy and cutting edge of techno and acid together with the chilling ambience of early synth music by the likes of Kraftwerk and the rest of the German 70's lineage. Take away the vocals and "Negativ Terminal Data" literally sounds like an early Chicago experimentation by the house legends of the day. It's certainly a recommended title and a highlight for this week's digging selection.

Review: The Advisory Circle's Mind How You Go is a haunting and evocative album that transports listeners back to the eerie world of 1960s and 1970s public information films. Inspired by the chilling soundscapes of these films, the album captures a sense of nostalgia and unease that is both poignant and unsettling. The album's music is both catchy and unsettling, with its eerie melodies and haunting vocals creating a sense of unease. The lyrics, which often focus on themes of danger and caution, add to the album's unsettling atmosphere. Mind How You Go is a masterpiece of nostalgic electronica. It is a record that is both haunting and beautiful.

Espirito Das Maquinas (7:47)
Review: You could say that Kodiak Bachine is Brazil's greatest ever Brazilian electronic producer. That would not be an overstatement, it's just a simple fact. It was 1982 when he first released this EP, and it's been a classic, and a favourite of ours, ever since. In fact, "Electricidade" is so powerful because it sounds like it could have been made today; its tenebrous synths filling the airwaves from every angle, giving the track a strange sensation of lust and wonder. The flip, "Espirito Das Maquinas", is another enchanting ride through broken electric cables and abandoned power plants, a place where Bachine clearly thrives and surpasses all expectations. Highly recommend reissue!

Review: A special release from Minimal Wave here as the uber rare Irene & Mavis EP from UK synth poppers Blancmange is granted a reissue! Those with a pub quiz winning level of knowledge of UK synth pop will no doubt be familiar with the 80s hits of Blancmange duo Neil Arthur & Stephen Luscombe, yet this debut EP dating back to 1980 will still sound revelatory. The self released Irene & Mavis EP marked Arthur and Luscombe to be fully willing to experiment with DIY electronics, impressing Mute founder Daniel Miller sufficiently to proclaim them "maiden aunts of electronic music," and thus more than suited as a subject of focus from the Minimal Wave label. There are definite similarities between this nascent stage of Blancmange and the output of Cabaret Voltaire from the same era, particularly in the masked and disembodied nature of the vocals, whilst "Holiday Camp" and "Just Another Spectre" are wonderful examples of instrumental synth music. Despite originally being released in 7" format, the six newly remastered tracks are presented here in 10" format by Minimal Wave with the distinctive artwork retained!

Review: The legendary Beta Evers kickstarted her Bodyvolt imprint back up again in 2015 and has been bringing back the darkness with her Black Spider Clan project, Black Pond (with Jeff Gallea) as well as a great various artists compilation last year. Two of the guests on the comp were Bruta Non Calculant and Swesor Bhrater - two aliases of legendary French producer Alexandre Gand (Le Syndicat Electronique) that make a return on this split EP. As Bruta Non Calculant, Gand explores rusty and guttural industrial/EBM mutations on the A side - the slow burning nightstalker antics of "Gazoline" and the snarling basement groove of "Distant Memory" standing out. On the flip, he explores the same frontiers as legendary New York legends Suicide on attitude driven synth-punk of "Twist In The Blaze" as Swesor Bhrater.

Review: Alan Partridge fans will no-doubt recognise Thetford, one of the many areas mentioned in a jingle used by the fictitious radio host during his Norfolk Nights broadcasts. Somewhere between Norwich and London, Thetford Forest, to use the full name, is an expansive woodland purposefully planted for timber, now a managed park offering a genuinely lovely day out for anyone in the area.

However, according to Concretism's Chris Sharp, and his family, there's also a beast that roams the area and has long-since been committed to regional folklore. Now, imagine that dark, snarling creature who likely only really comes out at night, and transpose that into coldwave tunes packed with eerie, sinister atmospheres, paranormality mixed with a kind of retro-futurist synth aesthetic. Got it?

Sequence 4 (5:54)
Review: Back in 2014, Dutch Minimal Wave legend Danny 'Das Ding' Bosten released Sequencer, a cassette of recordings made using his own homebrew modular drum machine and a Casio SK1 loaded with a Mellotron sample. Issued by local Rotterdam label DeHef Tapes, it proved something of a cult addition to the small but deadly Das Ding discography. In a show of good faith, DeHef have licensed the four tracks to fellow Rotterdam crew Midlight for this limited, hand-stamped 10" edition which will delight the Das Ding fanatics who prefer their Bostenite on wax. Sequencer is not really comparable to the early Das Ding popularised by Minimal Wave, it's Bosten looking forward and sequential experimentation at its most rewarding. Fans of the more stripped down SUED stuff can probably vibe to this too!

Review: Talk about things that make you go "oooh." The moment we heard that Daniel Avery, Working Men's Club and Ghost Culture were working together on a "new musical project" we had a lot riding on the results being particularly potent. Quite what they might sound like was anyone's guess mind, and there was an underlying worry that we might be left with another supergroup disappointment - where the parts are strong but don't necessarily understand how to gel. Demise of Love prove that doesn't have to be the case every time. It sounds like all of the above and yet none of them, it's ripe with emotion, fraught with punk ferocity and outwardly romantic in an electronic sense. Rave-y, weird, melancholic, angry, sleazy and infinitely re-playable, believe the hype.

Discodeine - "Aydin Music"
Whitey - "No More Right Or Wrong"
Review: Renowned across the world as a concept store for the well heeled Parisians, Colette have plenty of form when it comes to releasing compilations and their latest, Colette Call, sees them once again invite Kill The DJ's self proclaimed House Music activist Clement Vache to curate proceedings. Featuring the likes of Dean Blunt, DJ Koze and Gramme, Colette Call is as fashionably diverse as one has come to expect from the Parisian hub and it's granted a 10" sampler with contributions from Discodeine and Whitey. Cedric Pilooski and Benjamin Morando's Discodeine project feature with "Aydin" which is lifted off their forthcoming second album; it should be quite the soiree on the evidence here with the voice of Tame Impala's Kevin Parker well suited to the playfully epic sounding arrangement. Complementing this, Whitey offers up another example of his sorely under-rated talent with the plangent punk funk of "No More Right Or Wrong".

One Way No Replay (Meat Beat Manifesto remix) (5:08)
Stop/Begin Again (Meat Beat Manifesto remix) (3:12)
Review: First released in 2022, post-punk and industrial music legend Stephen Mallinder (half of Cabaret Voltaire for 40 years) returned for another collaboration with Eric Random (a storied post-punk UK musician in his own right) for the short EP 'Deadeye', consisting of two non-eponymous tracks, 'One Way No Run' and 'Stop / Begin Again'. Combining hypnotic rhythms, trembly synthwork and raucous whisper-singing, the songs form part of a series of releases from Eric Random for 2022-23 on the label eMERGENCY heARTS: an anarchist-run, indie collaborative media hub in Austin, Texas, spotlighting post-punk, outsider and non-genre specific music with political and darkwave aesthetics. Now reissued in late 2023 by Greece's very own Kinetik, the new version of the release hears two whopping and unprecedented remixes from Meat Beat Manifesto, who's remained at the bleeding edge of the fusion of said genres, together with IDM and techno, since he started out. The tracks are completely upended; flaymorphosed out from their original broken beaty, clean sensibilities and into far grittier and dirtier sonic gutters, ducts, bung pipes and vents.

Review: Laurene Exposito is back on Amsterdam's Knekelhuis with a follow up to her well received debut album. This new record is said to be very personal - life changes and her love life are said to be central themes. All tracks have been recorded at Exposito's home in the Rennes, France using all analogue equipment. Starting out with the seductive coldwave tribute "Yellow Density" which features some inventive synth action that reaches near acid moments over her deadpan vocals. On the flip, title track "Cocktail Mexico" goes for some Dopplereffekt style electro shenanigans and "Go Forward" conjuring up comparisons to early Tropic Of Cancer on this hazy lo-fi goth journey.

Heavy Eyes
Cartesian Bodies
Across The Sea
Between Suns
Review: With releases on Downwards, Can Destine and Cititrax behind them, there's a sense of expectation for what's next from The KVB. Their sixth and in our opinion best album comes courtesy of the lovely A Records...The label which has been responsible for most of the work by none other than the Brian Jonestown Massacre. "All Around You" sets a jarring pace to the narrative but "From Afar" quickly heads down gentler soundscapes and more gliding vocals - this is a gaze wave band which we're genuinely excited by! "Heavy Eyes" is the most experimental piece yet with its choppy beats and shredded vocals, but its "Between Suns" which makes our top pick - slow, lo-fi beats, an unforgettable guitar riff and some pretty sick electronics at its core.

Review: The mythical Transdance from UK duo Night Moves is given a much needed official issue by Domestica Records and the Barcelona label have spared no expense. A limited pressing of 400 clear blue 10"s come housed in hand printed and hand numbered sleeves accompanied by a leaflet with complete biography of the band. Despite the paucity of Night Moves discography, it's clear the duo of Michael Guihen and John Davis have had an everlasting effect on the canon of synth music with their much admired debut. Transdance was originally released as a limited 12" white label in 1981, finding favour on the dance floors of Europe and New York City yet never really gained the wider exposure it richly deserved. Original copies of the GC1 pressing of Transdance still command slightly ridiculous prices on Discogs so kudos to Domestica for this rather special presentation which features a previously unreleased demo cut "Life Up" on the flip.
