Review: It's almost impossible not to have a huge amount of admiration and respect for Neil Arthur. Now in his 62nd year, current undertakings include names like Near Future and Fader, and tour and remix duties for Kincaid (his son). Which is before we mention the 80s synth legends Blancmange, revitalised and reconfigured for our times in 2011.
We can only hope we have the same energy when we get to that life stage, but can't imagine still having innovation and ideas as seemingly infinite resources. 'Mindset' might retain the nuances and signature notes the band have always been known for, but it's so fresh you could be forgiven for thinking this whole sound had only just been conceived. Combining hefty, hugely danceable lows, glittering, hypnotic high ends and that iconic combination of spoken word and sung vocals, it's one for the collection to say the least.

  1. Living On The Ceiling (Roman Flugel remix) (6:23)
  2. Living On The Ceiling (Roman Flugel dub) (5:51)
  3. Living On The Ceiling (4:11)
  4. Living On The Ceiling (extended version) (5:32)
Review: First released way back in 1982, Blancmange's "Living On The Ceiling" remains one of the most alluring and eccentric of all new wave-era synth-pop cuts, in part because the unusual inclusion of tabla and sitar parts gives it an unusually exotic, mind-altering flavour. This timely reissue includes the original album mix (B1) and '82 12" version (B2), as well as two brand new reworks from the mighty Roman Flugel. The veteran German producer has delivered the goods, first via a deliciously wonky, otherworldly and analogue-rich revision that brilliantly fuses elements of trippy Teutonic techno and raw, turn-of-the-80s New Wave. As you'd expect, his accompanying dub takes the track further in this direction, delivering a deliciously skewed trip into sparse, heavy, early morning territory.

Late For Sum (green vinyl LP)
Cat: BCR 018LP. Rel: 11 Oct 19
Coldwave/Synth
  1. Late For Sum (5:04)
  2. Late For Sum (Kincaid Sleep Deprived version) (5:24)
  3. What's The Time? (Kincaid remix) (5:59)
  4. Distant Storm (Kincaid remix) (6:36)
  5. Not A Priority (Kincaid remix) (6:10)
  6. I Smashed Your Phone (Kincaid Wolfish remix) (5:22)
Review: This is a second release from the familia collaborative duo of Kincaid and his dad Blancmange. Their first EP made a big mark when it landed on Moscoman's Disco Halal imprint and now they back it up with more sludgy electronics, deconstructed dark disco and coldwave synth styles. "Late For Sum" opens in mysterious, spacious fashion before a Kincaid version reworks it into something more propulsive for the club. The darkened mood and trippy synths continue on "What's The Time?" while the b side offers exotic Middle Eastern disco, cosmic melodies and stark electro-techno with real panache.

  2. Big Fat Head (dub mix) (6:40)
  3. Big Fat Head (instrumental mix) (6:38)
  4. Big Fat Head (Nucat remix) (8:55)
Review: Next up on Berlin via Tel Aviv's Disco Halal imprint is Kincaid: the father and son team of Neil & Joe Arthur - the senior being one half of '80s synthpop legends Blancmange. The record marks the first original production from the pair, who have previously collaborated on a string of remixes for Blancmange such as "What's The Time", "Distant Storm" and "Not A Priority" - taken from the acclaimed albums "Wanderlust" and "Unfurnished Rooms". On "Big Fat Head", the pair has found a fitting home on Moscoman's label - this slow burning and intoxicating groove will take you deep into the exotic. On the flip, the label boss and Trikk team up as Nucat for some groovy nu-disco business on the remix.
