Review: The mighty Dez Andres has hooked up with Parisian digger Victor Kiswell for a sublime new double album on Spot Lite that finds a perfect sweet spot between both men's sound. It stems from a party that explores Arabic grooves from Northern Africa and the Middle East and pairs that with low slung deep house beats and hip-hop inspired joints. It's woozy and warm, packed with killer melodies and hooky riffs and is right up there with some of Dez's best work. Highlights include the likes of 'Grand Meze In Gemmayze' with its dusty beats and 'Bounce The Casbah' with Middle Eastern guitars that ring out with great soul.

Review: Given his impeccable downtempo credentials, you'd expect Bonobo's Late Night Tales mix to be one of the finer installments in the series (and that's saying something). Predictably, it is. Sweet, sensual and atmospheric, with plenty of unlikely gems and forgotten classics for the heads to enjoy, it surprises and impresses with each successive track. This vinyl edition features 17 of the tracks unmixed (naturally) and lifts out many highlights. His own cover of Donovan's "Get Thy Bearings" is particularly revelatory - string drenched, hazy, atmospheric and, of course, immaculately produced - but there are many other gems. Check Darondo's classic heart breaker "Didn't I," the smoky reggae-soul of Nina Simone's "Baltimore", and the enveloping intimacy of Shlohmo's "Places". Do seek out Benny Cumberbatch's spoken word turn at the end too! (mp3 download code for the full release included).

Review: Peace and football: not only the best compilation album title of 2006 (and possibly every year since) but also an immaculate collection of Brazilian folk, funk, disco and soul by Sonar Kollektiv champs Jazzanova. Ten years on and the SK dons are back with a second edition of Paz E Futbol, compiled with just as much care as an homage to football's spiritual home as that debut record. To adopt the football parlance, the band's digging duties score goal after goal after goal; the smoky Simoneisms of Ary Lobo, the heavenly vibraphonics of Skymark, the slippery time signature and almost cosmic bossa of Lucas Santana, the raw jazz soul of Nathan Haines, the list goes on. Review: To get away from the 'one track after the other' compilation concept K&D checked in at Havlis Super Sound where their man Alex (don of the echo chambers) has a secret dub-laboratory. There K&D did a dub session on the selected tracks to inject some dynamics and life into it. They took two bottles of Highland Park whisky and their old dub-echoes from the cellar and did a smoked-out dub echo-orgy.

Review: If you like Madlib then you will like this - a new and exclusive 28-track collection of the legendary hip-hop icon's best collaborations. There is also a special track taken from the Jaylib-era that was meant to be on a second album which never ended up being released. Review: Jump 'N' Funk started life as a small event in New York, organized by Rich Medina in order to pay tribute to the genius of Fela Kuti. Since then, parties have been held across the world, with Medina and guests showcasing music by, or inspired by, the Nigerian Afrobeat legend. This debut Jump N Funk compilation follows a similar formula, delivering both purist Afrobeat cuts (see Fela's punchy "Stalemate", and "Na Oil" by son Seun and his band, Egypt 80), and tracks in other styles that draw heavily on the style. Highlights in the latter category include the hazy Afro hip-hop of Aquil, a tasty Afro-house dub of River Ocean's cover of Timmy Thomas' classic "Why Can't We Live Together", and the lazy, sun-kissed glory of Kutiman's "Bango Fields".

Review: The last few years have really seen Paul Woolford reach the top of his game in many different ways. Be it bowel emptying rave as Special Request, festival baiting piano house tunes or chart topping pop dance crossovers under his own name, the man is proving himself to have a real golden touch. He sure does crank out all these tunes at a prolific rate, too, but you still feel he does everything with meticulous precision. This DJ Kicks is a case in point. It touches on all the many different facets of his sound from glossy and feel good house to early Chicago classics, post-rave dreamscapes to brutal jungle breaks. What a legend.

Still, at least we can be incinerated, drowned by flooding, or die from starvation or thirst while listening to some decent tunes. And these tunes are very decent. From space age jazz of Celia Hollander and Photay, to Julia Holta's pin-drop piano-vocal theatrical stunner, Baths & Rachika Nayer's very Bibio-sounding guitar-electronic dub, and the retro lounge style 'Making The Beat Scene' by Daedalus. Featuring fresh artists delivering spooky-themed tunes - coded with liberal use of sustained organ sounds, jaunty melodies and frequently head-nodding beats - it's a largely instrumental affair packed with tracks that are frequently as melodious and ear-catching as they are horror-tinged. Highlights include the post-air trip-hop shuffle of 'A Pumpkin's Farewell' by Frances The Mute v Lenny B, the DJ Cam-esque headiness of Swink's 'Bloody Night', the sring-laden folk-horror-goes-hip-hop flex of Alto vs Lenny Loops' 'Hollow' and the haunted headiness of Solar Body's 'Hocus Pocus'.

Review: Adrian Younge's Something About April II, originally from 2016, is a stunning evolution of his cinematic soul vision. Younge, who has long been devoted to blaxploitation-era sounds, expanded his palette here with richer songwriting and tighter arrangements. While rooted in the late 60s to early 70s soul aesthetic, the album always felt fresh and purposeful and still does almost a decade on for this reissue. Standouts like 'Sandrine' and duets with Laetitia Sadier and Bilal showcase his growth in composition and emotional depth and come with lush instrumentation from Fender Rhodes, vibraphone, and his custom Selene keyboard. Younge moved beyond homage with this work and into a world where he creates timeless originals and fully realised modern soul gems.

Brazilian vocalists, fuzzed-out drums and lush orchestration evoke MPB greats like Verocai and Os Mutantes and hip-hop kings Wu-Tang in equal measure. Tracks like 'Nunca Estranhos' and 'Nossas Sombras' are richly cinematic and deeply soulful standouts. More than a closing chapter, this record cements Younge's legacy as a visionary composer.
