Locked & Loaded (7:46)
Altitudes (7:03)
On The Run (8:07)
The Seed (7:11)
Review: Back in 2016, legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen approached techno pioneer Jeff Mills with the idea of working together. A series of live gigs and off-the-radar studio sessions followed, with the first fruits of their joint efforts finally appearing on this must-have 10". As you'd expect, the duo's collaborative work combines Allen's traditional Nigerian polyrhythms, traditional Afrobeat instrumentation, and the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired electronic futurism that has always marked out Mills' work. The result is a quartet of cuts that could arguably be described as retro-futurist Afro-tech - all delay-laden beats, basslines and organs subtly sparring with gentle acid lines, Motor City electronics, beguiling deep space textures and shimmering, 31st century motifs. It's arguably Allen's stylistic contributions that dominate, but that's no bad thing.

Let It Go (Terrence Parker mix) (6:57)
Review: Motor City techno legend Jeff Mills founded the American-Japanese tech-jazz/jazz-funk group Spiral Deluxe as a live outfit four years ago, but they've only just got round to recording a debut album. It's rather special, all told, with each of the four original tracks being laid down in one take at Faber Studios in Paris. Consequently, there's a pleasingly fluid feel throughout, with epic opener "E-MC2" - all virtuoso piano solos, freaky jazz-funk electric bass and bumpin' beats - arguably offering the best representation of their sound. You'll find some fine techno/jazz-funk fusion on the slap-bass-propelled title track, while "Let It Go", featuring the mesmerizing vocals of Tanya Michelle, sounds like an end-of-night classic in waiting. Mills old pal Terrence Parker gives his interpretation of that track on side four, re-imagining the delicate and poignant original version as an organ-heavy slab of gospel house brilliance.

Review: Fatima Bramme Sey has delivered some fine music over the years, but there's always been a feeling that there's still a genuinely killer album in her that's yet to come out. "And Yet It's All Love", her sophomore set following 2014 debut "Yellow Memories', could well be that set. Featuring 14 brilliant songs that variously touch on summery, sunshine-soaked soul-jazz, head-nodding, R&B-influenced modern soul, Afro-reggae (see the brilliant "Westside"), synth-laden goodness ("Attention Span of a Cookie", "I See Faces"), string-laden spoken word (Roc Marciano hook-up "Take It All"), piano-driven bliss ("Movie") and atmospheric soul-scapes (mournful "Note To Self"), it's undeniably a brilliant piece of work. It's the sort of album that could turn her into a star - and that accolade would be thoroughly deserved.

Review: With previous releases on Blind Jack's Journey and Tessellate, London via Istanbul's Aleksandir returns with this great new six tracker courtesy of Seb Wildblood's Church imprint. Shades of jazz, soul, broken beat and house linger throughout these lush and dusty downbeat selections. Take for instance the smooth opener "Before, After" with its seductive leads, airy pads and reduced polyrhythms, the late night deepness of "Gone Swimming" (which is so sensual) or the simply evocative mood lighting of "Between Summers" which respectfully recreates the vibe of UK greats such as 4hero or At jazz's classic nu-jazz antics.

Review: Two years ago, Volcov set our pulses racing with From The Archive, a superb selection of killer cuts from the depth of his notoriously impressive record collection. Volume 2 is equally as inspired, though the focus is a little different. Whereas Volcov previously chose to concentrate on soul, funk and disco, this edition is far more widescreen in scope. So, we get soaring soul-jazz bliss (Collective Peace's "Let The Music Play"), head-nodding hip-hop soul (Eric Lau remixing Ruth Koleva), futurist jazz-funk (Ron Trent's wild but brilliant "Ori Space"), soul-fired broken beat (Volcov's own re-edit of Xantone Blacq's vintage remix of Intuit's "Planet Birth"), impeccable soundscape jazz ("Lawra" by Tony Williams) and much more besides.

Review: Second time around for Mildlife's brilliant debut full-length, Phase, which here appears on red vinyl following a highly limited original pressing earlier in the year. The Melbourne four-piece has been picking up plaudits left, right and centre since the album first dropped, and it's easy to see why. Put simply, the six tracks offer a deliciously glassy-eyed, colourful fusion of vintage sounds and styles, with the band brilliantly mixing and matching elements of cosmic rock, kaleidoscopic 1960s dream pop, jazz-funk, blue-eyed soul, epic space round soundscapes and sun-kissed West Coast grooves. A wonderfully evocative and imaginative album.

Review: Lithuanian drummer Marijus Aleksa is cutting his teeth into house and tech with this solo debut via the YAM Recordings imprint, out of London, after having come to prominence thanks to his involvement in various groups, namely Contra Jazz, Mock?no Nuclear and Saga. As such, these four tracks present a delightfully jazzy strain of house music, starting with the electro-minded groove of "Time Blur" and followed closely by the more bumpy, more jovial sounds of "Mon Mon". Over on the flip, "Run The Sun" breaks the groove and dissipates into a much more loungy sort of flex, full of haze and mystery, while "Lunar" picks up the tempo and launches a minimalistic, drum-led pseudo-house rhythm with a distinctly organic aesthetic.

Review: On his latest album, Italian nu-jazz hero Gerardo Frisina displays a rawer side to his electronic music style, whilst merging it with his typical Latin crossover. The Rhythmic Conversations LP comes courtesy of Milan's Schema - an imprint which he's become a stalwart of. He takes aesthetics from Cuba, South America and Africa then crosses the Atlantic Ocean: incorporating percussive and tribal elements via the dancefloor. Highlights include the colourful Afro-jazz explosion of "Camaguey", the sweltering and hypnotic raindance that is "Arawak" (featuring some of the most sublime polyrhythms we've heard in a while) plus the deep and lo-slung spiritualism of "Yeha".

Review: It's all change on the 14th edition of Compost's long-running Future Sounds of Jazz series, with the baton being passed to two new curators: Permanent Vacation bosses Benjamin Frolich and Tom Bioly. It was perhaps a wise move, because the duo - compiling a side each - have taken a much more liberal approach to "jazz" as a concept. The result is a hugely entertaining two-disc trawl that variously takes in immaculate deep house (Isolee, Marcellus Pittman), inspired electronica (The Abstract Eye), acid-flecked jazz-funk/house fusion (Tee Mango), hypnotic techno and spacey tech-house (Matt O'Brien, Aubrey, Herzel), synth-Balearica (Jex Opolis, I:Cube remixing Jose Padilla), ambient (Move D, Luke Abbot) and, of course, proper contemporary jazz (Yusuf Kamaal, Roman Flugel).

Review: Six-piece outfit Soil and Pimp Sessions are one of Japan's better-known contemporary jazz crews, thanks in no small part to regular European releases on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings imprint. This tasty two-tracker is one of three simultaneously released seven-inch singles that mark the band's first new material of 2018. A-side "Comrade" is a sun-bright, jazz-funk fuelled soul-jazz number, with a local guest vocalist providing the top-end polish atop the band's attractive mixture of head-nodding, hip-hop style beats, summery trumpet solos, spacey synthesizer motifs and twinkling piano lines. The band's Herbie Hancock style jazz-funk influences are further explored on brilliant B-side "Explorer", an up-tempo, floor-friendly affair where band members trade solos over bustling drums and spacey synthesizer chords.
