Review: Originally released in 1982, A Flock Of Seagulls' eponymous debut album heard them burst on to the new wave scene with advanced songwriting and catchy guitar laps and lyrics. With Phil Spector hailing the album as 'phenomenal', perhaps for somewhat conforming to his wally production technique, the band ended up being venerated near-timelessly for their quasi-electronic synth tunes like 'I Ran' (clock the use of early electronic drum pads in its breakdown). This is new wave at one its best pop-centric peaks.

Review: Admin's 'Mystical Circles 02' delivers two vibrant tracks that embody the essence of dancefloor-ready disco and funk. On Side-1, 'Three Eight Four' kicks off with infectious tribal drum fills and funky bass licks, accentuated by a commanding saxophone that invites listeners to groove. Its lively energy makes it a standout choice for any party. Flipping to Side 2, 'Ionosphere' continues the momentum with wicked bass notes and a stunning groove, complemented by powerful horn arrangements that elevate the track's dynamic feel. This release perfectly blends disco house with jazz funk elements, making it an essential addition to any DJ's set. Mystical Circles 02 is a celebration of sound that is sure to get everyone on their feet.

Review: London's seasoned producer ADMNTi with four tracks that distil years of immersion in tech-house, jungle and grime into sharp, percussive club tools with distinct UK flair. 'Second Hand Sushi' drives the point home with its snapping drums, snarling basslines and wiry synth stabsibig-room energy and definitely no excess fat. 'Lost Fruits' stays steppy, leaning into sub pressure and pirate radio textures, soundbites crackling like a tape pack rewind. On the flip, 'Diptych' shifts tone without dropping paceichopped strings and warped vocals glide over crunchy drum work, locking into a more introspective groove. Closer 'Shrublands' dips further into dubwise atmospherics, pairing wobbly low-end with hazy flute lines and ghosted sax, while snippets of graffiti lore from both London and New York float through the mist. Early support from Ben UFO, Enzo Siragusa and Tristan da Cunha points to the range and functionality of these cutsiwhether heads-down or heads-up, they pull threads from the capital's soundsystem heritage into something that works across times and tempos. A strong first outing for Forms World and a clear step forward from ADMNTi.

Notes: Bartender is the centerpiece of the mixer system. Four stereo channels, with two stereo aux send and two stereo returns. Each channel can be used in a mono mode where both channels are mixed. If you want to do eight channels of mono, you can put the channels in stereo mode (I know it feels backwards) and then use the pan control to control the crossfade between each channel, and then take the mono output. There is a built in cueing system so you can monitor channels in your headphones and control the blend with the main output. You can expand a Bartender with both a Barback and/or another Bartender. When connecting two Bartenders, the main level control on the 'expander' Bartender acts as a group control.

One of the most legendary trance anthems of all time, 'The Age of Love', continues its reign with a fresh set of remixes that bridge generations of dance music fans. On Side-A, Charlotte de Witte & Enrico Sangiuliano inject their signature techno power into the track, transforming it into a driving, hypnotic beast. Charlotte has championed this remix in her sets and for good reasoniits retro synths and rolling energy make it a festival weapon, modernising the track while keeping its euphoric essence intact. Side-B opens with the 2021 remaster of Jam & Spoon's Watch Out For Stella mix, the definitive remix that catapulted the track into trance history. With its sprawling, cinematic breakdowns and timeless atmosphere. Rounding things out, Solomun delivers his Renaissance remix, a deep and unique take that shifts the track into a melodic house and techno hybrid, offering a fresh perspective without losing the original's magic. This re-release is both a tribute and a reinvention, proving that' The Age of Love' remains unstoppable on the dancefloor more than 30 years later.

Review: After spending the majority of his 20-plus-year career flitting between the Kompakt and Coneme labels, Matias Aguayo makes a rare outing on another label - a delayed debut for Matt 'Radio Slave' Edwards' REKIDS imprint. In its' original form (side A), 'El Internet' is a typically off-kilter affair in which his own poetic, spoken word vocals (in Chilean, of course) and fuzzy, elongated synth sounds ride a beefy but wonky bassline and the long-serving producer's usual South American-tinged, hand percussion-enhanced hybrid house/techno grooves. It comes accompanied by a vocal-free instrumental mix, where the full breadth and depth of Aguayo's production can be heard, and a useful acapella DJ tool.

Review: American jazz pianist par excellence Ahmad Jamal recorded The Awakening in 1970, originally for the Impulse! label. He was joined by Jamil Nasser on bass and Frank Gant on drums, and amongst his own compositions such as 'The Awakening' you can hear him tackling works from Herbie Hancock amongst others. Considering Jamal was already 20 years into his career by this point, the album has been hailed by critics for highlighting his evolution as a pianist, creating a more complex style without sacrificing delicacy and expression. It's a classic which is also loaded with hooks you might well have heard elsewhere on tracks from Nas and Common, to name but a few.

Notes: Presenting the new AJHSynth Matrix VCF - this may well be the most versatile Eurorack VCF ever.

This amazing multimode filter and VCA offers sixteen different filter types, and two different resonance models on each, totalling an incredible thirty two assorted resonant filters to choose from. AJH Synth have also included manual and CV control of filter type selection, along with 16 LED's that give a clear visual indication of which filter type is currently selected.

The filter core circuitry is based on that of the rare and highly sought after Oberheim Matrix 12 synthesiser, and of course has an all analogue signal path. The Matrix 12 VCF originally offered fifteen filter types, however AJH Synth have expanded this to 16 with the addition of AP4, a full four pole all pass phaser mode.

AJH Synth have added a unique P-Vox resonance distortion and overdrive circuit that changes the character of the resonance completely, and can force all of the filter modes into self oscillation. This effectively doubles the filter variants and hugely broadens what is already a very impressive sound pallet.

Other features include an inbuilt VCA with Input and Output Level controls, a Peak level LED, CV control of resonance, and of course the legendary AJHSynth build quality.

The Matrix VCF in depth

After two years of development AJH Synth have finally released what they consider to be the most versatile Eurorack VCF & VCA ever. Like many other AJHSynth modules it uses the very best vintage analogue circuitry as the starting point for the design, and in this case, the filter was chosen from the rare and very desirable Oberheim Matrix 12 synthesiser. AJH Synth expanded this from the original fifteen filter compliment to sixteen distinct filter types by adding in a really useful four pole phaser!

So, behind the compact 14hp front panel lies sixteen distinct filter types, including all of the favourites: Low Pass filters with a choice of one, two, three or four poles, Band Pass filtering with two or four poles, High Pass filtering with one, two or three pole options, along with Notch filtering and four complex, combination filter types. Finally, a four stage phaser with two types of emphasis that can be forced into tuneful self-oscillation!

However, this is far from the end of the story. AJH Synth decided to use their design expertise to add in some crazy resonance distortion circuitry, that could be switched on from the front panel. This was inspired by the filter from the Soviet Polivoks synthesiser, but again the implementation used here is considerably changed, improved, and best of all this can be applied to all filter types! This completely changes the filter character when engaged, and it forces all of the filters into self-oscillation at higher resonance settings. Better still, the oscillation waveforms are more harmonically rich than the usual sine waves - everything from gloriously fat to screaming and angry! Best of all, this takes the number of different filters up to a massive thirty two variations!

AJH Synth put a lot of thought into the ergonomics and how to select the individual filter type. Filter type can be changed either with the front panel Mode knob, or by using a control voltage patched to the MODE CV input. The selected filter mode is displayed by the LED next to the filter in use. This is also very helpful when using a step sequencer to change filter mode as it gives a real time display of the filter chosen as you take the step CV voltage up or down, while setting up each individual step.

Lastly, AJH Synth have also included a VCA hard-wired to the output - simply patch an envelope or an LFO to the VCA input, connect a VCO to the audio input and you have a synth voice (with a choice from 32 different filters!) using only three modules!

Thirty two Eurorack VCF's and a VCA would most certainly take up a lot of rack space - AJH Synth have got all of this into 14hp and managed to have a really finger-friendly user interface, without it feeling cramped.

P-VOX MODE

Transforming the resonant character of every filter type

This magical switch completely transforms the resonance of the filter core by overdriving it in a similar fashion to the filter from the Soviet Polivoks synthesiser, which was renowned for it's powerful, aggressive character.
In common with the Oberheim Matrix 12 VCF, some of the sixteen filter types will not normally go into self-oscillation, however when you switch on P-Vox mode all sixteen filter types can be forced into self-oscillation at higher resonance settings. But that isn't the only change, the self-oscillation waveform is not the usual sine waveform, it is a rather more interesting and harmonically rich waveform that varies according to the filter type chosen - generally Low Pass modes produce the nearest to regular sine waves, whereas other filter types can produce very much more complex waveforms as can be seen in the diagrams below. It does not require any audio input for this, it can be a stand alone oscillator. Most of the filter types will track 1V/Oct reasonably well over a three to five octave range, so it can be used as a VCO with a few interesting waveshapes!

Of course, P-Vox mode isn't just useful for self-oscillation, it adds lots of character to any audio signal as P-Vox resonance is switched in.

Review: Saxophonist Joe Armon-Jones teams up with vocalist Hak Baker and saxophonist Nubya Garcia for a fresh EP paying homage to the dub music tradition in the UK. 'Wrong Side Of Town' homes in on this titanic genre, riffing off the trademark 'horns cut' that would appear on the B-sides of roots reggae EPs in the 70s and 80s. With Hak's vocals effortlessly evincing a South London drawl, it's clear from the outset that usual, prejudiced ideas of what the wrong side of town would normally be is flipped on its head; truly, it's the area outside Bank station and the Royal Exchange that's the real no-go. Note: B-sider 'Nubya's Side Of Town' was also played by legendary UK sound system founder Jah Shaka in one of his last sessions before his sad passing in April 2023.

Review: This Vincent Arthur album is a tribute to his daughter Vivian and was crafted by talented musicians from Africa, the Caribbean and Germany. Once obscure for 30 years, its standout track, 'Travel With The Music' became an anthem after making a high-profile appearance in a Dekmantel set where its euphoric afro-disco sound really made a lasting mark. Online sleuths uncovered its origin which has reignited interest in this hidden gem, which has been remastered by Frank at The Carvery. It revives three key tracks in 'Travel With The Music' which shines with afro, disco, and gospel-like euphoria. 'Afro Disco' brings playful energy while 'Jubilation' closes the night with deep, celebratory vibes.

Review: Polish label FOMO_ debuts with the first in its news Spectral series, and who better to kick off with than the ever innovative ASC. He is a master of musical tension and abstraction and shows that with four tracks that build up the pressure and never let it go. 'Calm Under Pressure' is soothing up top with its smeared, spectral pads, but there's pent-up tension in the low end that keeps you on edge. 'Dark Arches' soundtracks an underground cavern with haunting pads and icy, watery droplets and 'Maelstrom' gets more direct with jostling broken beats, hissing trails and unsettling deep space mystery. Review: Since its release in 1997, David Lynch's neo-noir-horror, Lost Highway, has become something of a cult classic. The accompanying soundtrack album, here reissued on weighty double vinyl, is similarly revered in some circles. Put together by Nine Inch Nails' frontman Trent Reznor, composer Angelo Badalamenti, and punk-turned-producer Barry Adamson, it's a mish-mash of darkly intense songs (Bowie, Smashing Pumpkins, Lou Reed and Rammstein all contribute), and the kind of creepy, other-worldly soundscapes that have always been a feature of Lynch's work. It's arguably the latter tracks, composed by Badalementi and Adamson, which remain creepily potent all these years on.

Review: Although it received a lukewarm reception on its initial 2003 release, Erykah Badu's third studio album, Worldwide Underground, has subsequently become something of a fan favourite - in part thanks to its' partially improvised nature and undeniably impressive fusion of classic hip-hop and soul elements. As this reissue on striking purple vinyl, the album has lost none of its sparkle in the 19 years that have passed since its' release. The multiple highlights include sweet, retro-futurist head-nodder 'Bump It (Part 1 & 2)', the nostalgia-seeped 'Back in the Day', Dead Prez hook-up 'The Grind' and the block party-rocking hook-up with Queen Latifah, Bahamedia and Angie Stone, 'Love of My Life Worldwide', a club-ready update of the Sequence's early rap classic 'Funk You Up' (which, of course, Stone featured on and co-wrote).

Now working under the alias Balaphonic, long serving Manchester artist Danny Ward steers his ear for percussion into something warm, rhythmically rich and hypnotic. He opens with 'Sunflowers in Dub (Deep Summer Mix)', where sitar, harmonica and fluttering keys glide across a humid dubscape, then folds in sun-dappled samba on 'Disorganics (All Strings Mix)', all brushed guitars and delicate groove. 'Six Fingers' leans deeper into Afro-Cuban melancholy, while 'Udders' chops South American drums into psychedelic loops, teasing out low-end heft. A standout collaboration with Ocean Waves Brasil, 'Oxum' blends gentle acid with dreamy textures and Afro-Brazilian swing, before closer 'Bloco Manco' lets off the brakes-delay-lashed, bass-heavy and totally locked-in. It's music built for dancefloors, but with the patience and touch of a drummer who knows when to let things breathe.

Review: Setting aside the tired old debates about what does and doesn't count as Balearic - at this point, that's down to the listener - the hard-to-describe genre does at least lend itself to the humble re-edit. If 'anything goes', then nothing is off limits. The shadowy Balearic London crew put that to the test on this versatile and rather good selection of reworks. They begin by slightly pitching down, tooling up and dubbing out pop 'classic' the Macarena on 'Mac & (Less) Cheese', before heading into safer Balearic territory via the glistening guitars, rubbery grooves and wide-eyed sound effects of 'Release The Hounds!' Elsewhere, 'Cities of Gold' is an extra-percussive slab of deep instrumental synth-pop/proto-house excellence, while 'Stellar Style' does a fine job in re-framing and tweaking an AOR pop gem from the early-to-mid 80s.
