Review: Greyscale unveils its latest endeavour, the Spectrum Series, as a way to continue to evolve its offerings and this time it is with something that makes a vibrant departure from its traditional black-and-white aesthetic. The inaugural release features the iconic Lithuanian dub track 'Kasdienybes Sventykla' by grad_u & Eazystyle MC as a way of commemorating its 15th anniversary. It came as a double CD in 2011 but now gets a first vinyl pressing on a nice 10" slab of wax. The track itself taps into the earliest roots of dub in the 70s and traces a line through the 80s with its heavyweight drums and endlessly echoing bass topped by great mic work. A pared-back instrumental features on the flip of this latest crucial drop from the dub dons at Greyscale

Review: The Det 313 label is kicking off the new year with a bang and dropping a pair of brilliant new EPs on the same day in late January. This one is a reissue of the esteemed Gary Martin's 'Pimping People In High Places' on 10". It's the Woodword Ave alternative mix that kicks off and is a rough and ready percussive techno looper with hefty basslines underlapping and propping up the floor. 'The Medusa Touch' is a more wily and synth laced-late night jaunt with mystic energy and acid details that make it a deep and dramatic cut with real dynamism.

Review: Back in 2016, legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen approached techno pioneer Jeff Mills with the idea of working together. A series of live gigs and off-the-radar studio sessions followed, with the first fruits of their joint efforts finally appearing on this must-have 10". As you'd expect, the duo's collaborative work combines Allen's traditional Nigerian polyrhythms, traditional Afrobeat instrumentation, and the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired electronic futurism that has always marked out Mills' work. The result is a quartet of cuts that could arguably be described as retro-futurist Afro-tech - all delay-laden beats, basslines and organs subtly sparring with gentle acid lines, Motor City electronics, beguiling deep space textures and shimmering, 31st century motifs. It's arguably Allen's stylistic contributions that dominate, but that's no bad thing.

A singular 10" record houses these twin audio-imps, with the titular 'Triple Menace' occupying older-skool junglist territories, and the latter bringing things forward in time to a future-soundsy rave minimalizer.

On his latest release, he joins the Too Slow To Disco Edits series with four tracks of smooth and groovy disco edits. He reworks some classic and obscure gems from the late 70s and early 80s, adding his signature touch of warmth and soul. Review: Sir Hiss and 4AM Kru set up a dialogue between London and Bristol, a stellar dialectic giving rise to a supreme form of lo-fi jungle. 'Earshots' samples a bhangra vocal cry, mixing it up with the scratchy factory movements of cut-throat jungular breaks. It marks a break from Sir Hiss' usual grime parlance, and adds to a refreshingly-named new series handled by their parent label Embrace The Real, called 'No More Mailouts', an explicit callout of PR in the electronic music industry which aims to lead by example. Review: After many years turning out 12"s, Klasse Wrecks has decided to serve up a first-ever 10" and they give the honour to Mr. Ho. His '000 Baby' is a delightfully widescreen sound - a post-rave mix of comedown electronics, dusty breakbeats and soothing ambient pads with some smart vocal samples drifting like wispy clouds. On the flipside, we're treated to and OM Unit remix that beefs things up and speeds up the drums. The percussion too is more defined and the energy levels ramped up with deft 808 bass and searching acidic leads. A nice yin to the A-side's yang.

Sporting a distinct blue-themed label, it seamlessly integrates with the previous releases' red, gold, and green labels. Indica Dubs initiates the composition with drums, chords, and bass, paving the way for Chazbo to embellish with his signature warrior-style synth horns and flutes. Subsequently, Sukh expertly mixes several cuts at the Indica Dubs studio, which are then mastered by the legendary Russ Disciples. The result? Review: Emotional Rescue closes out another brilliant year with one final hot drop. This sorting 7" Safari by King Sporty was the artist's first ever single back in 1976. It comes after the label has served up plenty of reissues of the man known as Noel Wiliam's tackle but this one might be the best. It's from his album Deep Reggae Roots and is nice tropical excursion with steamy hits, wooden percussive sounds and funky bass over a low-slung groove and chanting vocals. This one is backed with a special disco mix by Lexx that reworks the tune for more lively moments.

JKriv & Dicky Trisco link up first for 'Mae Do Mar,' a tune that has you dreaming of warmer climes, sandy beaches and sunny skies. It's an airy cut with a tropical percussive line, hints of Latin flair and breezy vocals. Flip it over and the temperature goes up a notch - Bernardo Pinheiro's 'Xango' is a superbly soulful and heartwarming groover. Review: Randy's Vintage Dub Selection originally came up as a collection of dub versions of classic reggae cuts from the legendary Randy's Studio 17 in Kingston, Jamaica. The likes of King Tubby, Errol Thompson, Lee Perry, you name it, all recorded there, making it a veritable treasure-trove of dub history. Now comes a new 7" paying tribute to the Studio via the Randy's-adjacent Gary Hall-run label - Jamaican Recordings. The A-side here is a rare dub cut to 'Natty Dread Ah No Mickey Mouse', which was itself a cut to 'Natty Dread Won't Get A Witness', over the classic Bangarang rhythm. Meanwhile, the B spans two versions: 'Dub Feeling', recorded in 1969 and a dub of Slim Smith's 'This Feeling', and 'It's A Dubbing Lie', which reworks Ernest Wilson's 'It's No Lie', also from the very same year.

Review: There are no specific credits behind this drop on Dutch label Planet Rhythm, but someone has decided to take one of Nina Simone's most powerful musical moments, 'Sinnerman', and create a great big peak time techno monster out of it. The original version bristles with tension, not least thanks to Simone's dexterous piano work, and the looping quality of those keys certainly foreshadowed the cyclical nature of club music. It's not hard to see why the song inspires energy in a club setting, and on this one-track single-sided 12" you can hear Simone's creation chopped up, sampled and strapped to a thunderous kick.

Once again the artist draws from across a spectrum of bass, digidub and breaks and also throws some jungle into the melting pot. Opener 'Survival Dub' is powered by classic breakbeats and great mic work that is sure to liven up any party. 'Smoke Mari' then slows it down to a fat dub with a vocal sample from a well-known smoker's anthem with plenty of mind-melting effects and stepping rhythms. Emotional Rescue turn their attention to Rare Silk and their sublime cult classic "Storm". It's one of those rare tracks with a wonderful otherworldly quality that manages to be smooth and accessible, and somehow not like anything you've ever heard before. It must be somewhere in the mix, between the dreamy harmonized vocals, lush instrumentation and curious sense of space. The original on the A side is a treat enough, but then throw in a mercurial dubbed out version by Arp on the flip and you've got yourself a 12 inch portal to a most delightful dimension.

Review: Two of drum & bass' most rabid underdogs, Nookie and DJ Crystl, the latter returning only recently after a two decade hiatus - make a triumphant return to the foreground, joining Suburban Architecture in aid of the third edition of their Architecture Dubs series. A fresh fusion of old and new motifs, Nookie's remix of 'Renegade Horns' pays homage to a select juncture in the genre's evolution, recalling the era of "intelligent" drum & bass while nonetheless playing into the freshness and cleanliness that could only ever have surfaced after the 2010s. Crystl's version of 'New Horizons', meanwhile, is more refractive and dreamy, taking its required time to bask in its artisanal padwork, in contrast to its raw b-boy sample and frank Amen breaks.

He has a knack for sound design and crafting such powerful kicks that his tunes are always irresistible to both DJs and dancers. He offers up two more high grade weapons here for the second release on Beard Man. First is the maximal minimalism of the bendy 'Loop 132' with its glitchy hits and undulating synths, then comes the more driving and uplifting dub techno banger 'Loop 131.' It's a high energy affair that might well raise some eye brows given the vocal, but you can't help but admire it's all out joyousness and air of celebration. Review: Daniel Avery's heartfelt tribute to the late, great Andrew Weatherall, the melancholic masterpiece that is 'Lone Swordsmen', was one of the standout tracks on his most recent album, the critically acclaimed Ultra Truth. Here the track returns in remixed form, with Throbbing Gristle's Chris Carter putting his spin on Avery's bittersweet, late-90s style IDM gem. Carter's version is a touch warmer and more percussively up-beat, with Avery's lilting lead lines, poignant melodies and glistening electronic motifs rising above a slipped breakbeat and moody bass. It's an excellent remix all told, and a fine example of how to rework on already excellent track to enhance its key features.

Review: "Raach City Riot" marks the first instrumental release for Ta Raach. This EP captures the essence of people living in a bleak society and how they face down a bloated regime and its jive idealisms.

Review: On the heels of Sensei Plates' previous successes comes the second instalment with Prince's "The Dance", remixed by super-producer Osunlade. On the flip side is Carlos Mena who delivers a tasteful remix of Stevie Wonder's "For Your Love." Already getting love from DL Spinna, Jojo Flores and Karizma.

Ordinary Things
Review: Ten Thousand Yen do it right again with the future flex of rising producer XXXY housed in a delightfully bespoke designed ten inch sleeve and limited to 350 copies for the world to consume. "You Always Started" will bear obvious comparisons to early Joy Orbsion - i.e. before he went all house - but that's no bad thing as it's drenched in a soulful emotion that builds quite delightfully towards the hair raising crescendo. The guile with which XXXY teases out the vocal sample deserves a golf clap. Equally impressive is the psychedelic house thrust of "Ordinary Things", chopping up the vocal over a skipping deep bump, with a swathe of burning tripped out melodies the backdrop to purple synth flourishes and cheeky whoo samples. There's a simplicity to the production but it's overwhelmed by the thickness of sonic emotion XXXY achieves. As well as being very pretty this release comes with a code to download the tracks!

Noelle Scaggs - "Cherry Pie" (instrumental)
Review: Easily winning the imaginary award for sleeve design of the week is the third volume of The Do Over's highly prized 10" series - and the music is just as impressive! Housed inside the 3D package that comes with red and blue acetate inserts is a custom printed inner sleeve that keeps the purple marble wax nice and snug. The ten inch itself sees Wurst act Great Weekend share sides with The Rebirth's Noelle Scaggs. The former's "Let's Do It Again (Over & Over)" is the kind of vitamin D infused disco funk associated with The Do Over and demands repeat listen. On the flip, Scaggs' "Cherry Pie" sounds like a sex starved Grace Jones covering "Tainted Love".

The Visitor (Ray Mang dub reprise)
The Visitor (Idjut Boys Naughty Wrong'un mix)
Review: As we continue to recover from the sheer awesomeness of Paqua's debut album Alkaliko, Claremont 56 commission two very special versions of the modern day Balearic hymn "The Visitor". Ray Mang reminds us of the true meaning of dub as we're immersed in a truly enveloping dynamic where flickers of the original's vocals fly and in and out of the mix. Idjut Boys follow a similar sentiment but instead of teasing us with the vocal shades, they extend, break down and rebuild the instrumentation in a way only they know how. Super-limited, this is the perfect complement to a perfect album.

Thurston Moog
Review: Given the sludgy, otherworldly strangeness of his output, it's perhaps little surprise that Chicago's Beau Wanzer has strong relationships with both Russian Torrent Versions and L.I.E.S. This four-track EP of decidedly weird experiments could easily have come out on either of those imprints; instead, it represents a long overdue debut proper for Melvin Oliphant III's intriguing Nation imprint. Power Outage shows Wanzer at his eccentric best, variously delivering triple-time horror-techno (the moody title track), ghostly ambience (the decidedly lunar "Fabrics"), delay-laden, cymbal-heavy beatscapes ("Lotraf"), and impossible-to-pigeonhole experimental exotica ("Thurston Moog"). The whole thing bristles with in-your-face attitude, as if Wanzer really doesn't care what listeners think. That makes Power Outage all the more alluring.

Pulp (Linkwood Stargazer mix)
Review: Firecracker offshoot Unthank returns with a keenly awaited seventh release that introduces Texan producer Fur into the fold. It's the first credited release for the American producer (real name Bryce Isbell) since his Cocoon EP for the UNO label last year - this coming from a producer who according to his Facebook page has "released over 50 albums" on multiple formats. It's an impressive Unthank debut for Fur which sees weighty pianos and deep house rhythmics match the sounds of a harmonious DJ Sprinkles production. Firecracker's Linkwood bolsters the EP with his Stargazer remix, which replaces heavily struck keys with new age synths, while the loose swing of the original's drums have been tightened to create a linear, but laid back reinterpretation.

The Reworks (part 2)
Review: With Landed marking one of the recent high points in an illustrious career for Detroit producer Norm Talley, the man himself returns to Landed to examine lead track "Travlin" with a pair of revisions that showcase different outcomes with the confines of slender, refined deep house. "Part 1" takes a dubby path, anchored by a hypnotic chord pattern while the beat ticks away in an unfussy manner. "Part 2" is the more sublime turn though, paring things down even more with a thoroughly minimal set of drums and a wonderfully hypnotic melodic tone undulating throughout. For a classy set of stripped down house shakers, look no further.

Denominazione Version
Review: New York's Mister Saturday Night is one of a handful of labels that are genuinely capable of surprising us with each successive release (as their thrillingly eclectic forthcoming Brothers & Sisters compilation brilliantly proved). For example, who would have predicted that this first MSN 10" single (the first from sometime L.I.E.S man Gunnar Haslam) would open with two and a half minutes of dark, intense ambience and distant Middle Eastern singing? Elsewhere, Haslam inches further towards the dancefloor, retaining the dark and exotic feel on "Discouraged", before pummeLling us with discordant, delay-laden DJ tool "Denomiazione Version". Brilliantly left-of-centre stuff all round.

Review: Last seen on the Tru Thoughts label back in 2011 with his debut LP Chapters, London based Masaaki Yoshida aka Anchorsong resurfaces on the like-minded BBE with the Mawa EP. The time out of the spotlight has evidently seen Yoshida expand on his production palette as the downtempo stylings of his Tru Thoughts output has been traded for something a lot more upbeat on the four tracks here. The lead track is a dizzying melange of sampled African chants and tape saturated percussion that's blessed with some abstract textural detail, whilst "Flamingos" features some excellent marimba manipulation and gives Jamie xx a run for his money in the emotive bass music stakes. The tempo gets thrusted upwards with "Ivory" though there is still a delicate feel to the overall production, whilst closing track "Mantra" sounds like Shangaan Electro gone UK house.

Review: When the hitters are as big as Maceo Plex and Kompakt, there's no need for trite B side distractions and so this single-sided release comes forth with exactly the kind of anthemic, pop-straddling tech house that you would expect from such a combination. There may be edgy arpeggios and chunky drums powering the rhythm of the track, but with the straining emotional vocal and romantic pad sweeps, this is a track to garner appeal across the board, and not at the expense of the impact this will have in a club. It won't take long to learn the words, so before the summer is out you can expect plenty of people to be cooing along dreamily to this bright and bold belter.

Review: After his successful rise on labels such as 2nd Drop and Hot Flush, South London Ordnance kicks off his own Aery Metals imprint with a bold 10" double pack that finds him expanding his sound whilst reaching out to respected peers to leave all possibilities for the future open. "Black Acre" is a tense, sparse cut with stripped, pincer like drums and haunting vocals from Brolin, while "Floating World" gets into a tougher, techno-tinged stomp decked out in metallic tones. It's not all completely bleak though, as "Obsidian" lets some colour creep into the mix and "System" veritably revels in cascades of bleeps over a chunky kick and clap combo. On the remix front, Factory Floor pull no punches with their hissing beast of a version of "Modular Splash", while JD Twitch takes the same track into a curious twirl of percussion and vocal triggering.

Review: With beats as sharp as her fringe, Panda's making some serious ripples in bass circles right now. Barbed with a moody Two Lone Swordsmen vibe, "Return Of The Snake" is a menacing homage to classic electro, "Pure Juice" is heavier on the synths with crisp, icy licks while Chunka's reboot of "Overlondon" takes Panda down a take path and woes her with satanic sonic soliloquies. Uncompromisingly dark and delicious.

Review: "Be odd, be future, be not too serious" is the official tagline of ANUS Recordings and with a name such as theirs it's clear the fledgling Rotterdam operation don't take themselves that serious! Amusingly named they may be, but ANUS Recordings clearly know what constitutes a good release, turning to the ever excellent Tuff Sherm for this Solvent Dreams 10". There was a time when Tuff Sherm was considered the less prolific alias of Dro Carey aka Australian producer Eugene Hector but under the TS banner he's been in imperious form this year, issuing beat tapes as well as appearing on TTT, Merok and Clandestine Traxx. Solvent Dreams continues his run of form, laying down four tracks of grizzled techno abstractions filled with desiccated sampledelica with "Navigator & Hostage" and B Side hugger "Guirow" standing out.

Tender Melody
Review: As the name suggest, The Saint Petersburg Disco Spin Club was born out of Russia and the longwinded alias gives Francis Inferno and Deep Space Orchestra's a run for their moniker money. The Can't You See Me EP for Italian label Glenview Records represents the mysterious producer's first record of the year after a prolific 2012 and leads with a psychedelic and pitched down tenor on "Cant You See" that's not to dissimilar from Tornado Wallace's earlier Balearic works. It sees lazy hi-hat scrapes and thickly struck bass stabs hold down a funky and vocal groove. The dry pitter-patter drum beats of "Tender Melody" move to meet filter-delay horns which are reinforced by a complimentary bassline and vocals of dainty swoon. Two cuts for the early hours of a lazy afternoon.
