Review: Break's long-awaited third album is getting closer and closer by the sampler. We don't need to the hype it; the word couplet of Break and album is self-hyping enough to all who know their D&B. We don't even need to hype these tracks; "Free Your Mind" opens with a lush "Love So True" style reggae refrain before dropping into free-flowing rolling gold topped by Fats instantly distinctive harmonies. "Brand New" opens with heavenly chords before dropping into a deliciously rough and angular groove. Classic Break, both of these kill it on all corners. Bring on the album!

Review: Bristol label Symmetry Records have decided to kick-start the New Year in requisite fashion with Symmetry Sessions vol 1, a digital collection featuring contributions from some of the top names in the scene. Label boss Break naturally features quite prominently on the six track release and Symmetry have decided to pull two highlights from the Sessions for this 12" sampler. Given that a remix of Break is a rare thing, it's no surprise that the highly prized Calibre relick of "They're Wrong" lines the A Side, rolling effortlessly towards the run out groove in a fashion that Calibre does so well. Face down and Break teams up with the gifted and blessed DLR for "New Design" which is a fine slab of dark tech step.

Review: "See for me this is Michael Caine, cliff-top road, south of France, open top E-Type Jag, boot full of gold bullion after the heist. This time it worked" - Mary Ann Hobbs, Radio 1. Not a bad introduction, and its not unwarranted in this instance, perhaps the most anticipated release on the label so far. 'Hollow' is a slick, brooding roller which has received a heavy amount of airplay and club support. 'The Question' has been described by many as DNAudio meets Full Cycle, a bouncy dancefloor workout that has been big in the boxes of Friction, Noisia and Pendulum among a host of others over the last year. Review: Since 2003, the Intrigue crew has been providing Bristol clubbers with regular doses of liquid funk and musically expansive drum and bass, first at their regular parties and, since 2008, on their offshoot label. Predictably, there's much to enjoy on this celebratory 12". Old pal Break steps up first with a veritable warm summer breeze of a roller, "Mind's Eye" - all punchy, snare-heavy beats, acoustic guitars, rumbling bass and dreamy freestyle vocals - before Superior Selectionz and Ben Soundscape join forces for the slightly more weighty but no less attractive "Justa". Over on side B, Soundscape returns to action alongside Ryogreen and Protone on the wobble bass-propelled stepper "Ruffneck", while Lurch - a lesser-known stalwart of the Bristol scene - delivers some delicious, Afro-tinged liquid funk alongside Joakuim. Rock solid.

Review: 10 years of Symmetry - 10 years of Break being an absolute boss. Respected by all sides of the game, his on-point balance of a funk and true grit has united us for over a decade and he's about to drop a brand new full-lengther of his own productions and remixes to celebrate. The two cuts showcase his range and skillish charm perfectly: "Give In To Me" features long-term collaborator Kyo who gives her most powerful soulful vocal over classic Break organs and a heavily swung beat. "Who Got Da Funk" is much sharper and grizzlier with its wasp nest bassline and punctuated two-step. Both prime us for the imminent album.

Review: One look at who's involved here should raise any drum and bass head's eyebrows. All genre A-listers, it's one of those release schedule entries that's guaranteed to get everyone excited, and thankfully the pudding is just as tasty as those ingredients. Break & Kyo lead the charge with 'Past North', a summertime anthem-in-the-making opening on acoustic guitar chords that wouldn't sound weird on a Me One record. Definitely one for festivals, boxfresh percussion ensures it fully fires off once the poppier elements temporarily subside. That said, DJ Marky's 'Hard Hands' trumps it for crisp drum work, delivering some typically exotic vibes. Ill Truth and Satl's 'In Your Soul', or at least its Lenzman remix, keeps the sexy and smooth warmth alive, with '3 Way' closing out on a dub-influenced tip courtesy of Total Science and FD.

Review: Five years have passed since Bristol-based beat-chiseller Break last dropped the A-bomb. The whole scene has changed hugely since then, but with his new LP Break is preparing to take us back to the days when only the groove (and some perfectly processed snares) mattered: The Kyo-fronted "Simpler Times" is a barbed soul roller with just the right amount of roughage while "Top Shooter" is a straight up slapper with deep rumbling subs and Break's gritty rhythm signature. Bring on the album!

Review: Symmetry bossman and all-round don Break barges into 2020 with his first fresh produce of the decade and it's not a moment too soon. "Got A Feelin'" weighs in on the groany sewer sounds that are still characterising the genre right now, but done in a subversive, gritty funk way that's unique to him. Flip for some serious sample schooling. Returning to the source of one of jungle's most well-favoured breaks (the clue's in the title) and making new edits using different parts of the record, it's a true breakbeat odyssey with all the subs and detuned stabs a classic jungle hat-tip could ever wish for. Break it down.
