Review: The Birthday Massacre, hailing from Canada, command a bracing gothic blend of 80s electronica and aggressive guitar work. Formed in 2000 as Imagica, the band is led by vocalist Chibi and guitarists Rainbow and Michael Falcore. They debuted in London, Ontario, before moving to Toronto and rebranding, with the 2002 self-released Nothing and Nowhere inducting us into their horror-comedic sonic aesthetic, drawing on macabre cabaret and Grande-Guignol rock. Review: Seven strong San Francisco rock band Counting Crows have always walked a fine line between intimate storytelling and grandiose soundscapes. This time - taking the four tracks from their Butter Suite pt 1 Ep and adding five more new tracks - they sound like a band utterly in control of their own narrative. Adam Duritz's lyrics reflect a certain self-assurance as they weave through themes of reinvention and regret. Musically, the band brings a tighter, more focused intensity, merging rock, folk and even hints of alt-country with the ease of a band at their peak. 'Spaceman In Tulsa' takes its time, unfolding languidly, savouring every detail before pushing forward. And in moments like 'Boxcars,' it's clear this is the most cohesive they've sounded in years, with every instrument serving the story rather than competing for attention. They've done the work, and now, it's all paying off.

Review: Germany's Die Haut are like the forefathers of a sound that's now sometimes referred to as Crank Wave - this rough n' ready rehearsal room, or dimly-lit basement sound with noisy guitars and goth singing. What's clear, though, despite more than 40 having passed by since this was first released (1983), few capture that murky, jagged aesthetic better than Die Haut. And if you were to have someone mumble-sing over your noise then who better than Nick Cave? Nick Cave was at the end of his time in Birthday Party at this time he briefly joined them, so, as a young man, his pipes are relatively higher than the bellowing baritone we know him to be today. In terms of kindred spirits, you can imagine Lias Saoudi of Fat White Family being firmly into this. This is a top-tier reissue.

Review: This is a reissue of the debut album by one of the most original and dynamic forces on the US indie scene - Pittsburgh noise-pop experimentalists feeble little horse. This follow-up to their EP, Modern Tourism, makes a case for them being among the finest to arrive out of Pennsylvania state's underground music scene since the likes of Kurt Vile and The War On Drugs. Plus, they have traced a similar path, playing in many DIY venues around Pittsburgh and Philadelphia in a bid to get their name out there. Their inventiveness is one of the most striking things about them - they have a nostalgic sound that leans on shoegaze and jangle pop and at the same time sound like nothing that's come before them. Guitarist/producer Sebastian Kinsler's words go some way to expressing why that may be: "We always to make these songs as weird as we can without destroying what makes them cool." It's certainly worked with just the right balance struck.

Review: Quebecois trio Men I Trust bring their recent album Oncle Jazz to 2xLP after an initial CD release. An evanescent vapourising of the sound they've laid down from 2014 onwards, the 23-track album hears the trio focus their craft despite the length, bridging whimsical instrumentals to midrange-layered islands of indie lilt, amid upright and airy vocal mondegreens. Star tracks for us have to be 'Found Me' and the quirkier 'Fiero GT'.
