Bplan & Fab_O - "Miscela Segreta" (5:37)
Reece Johnson - "Groove Espresso" (5:44)
Shamako - "Chicco Felino" (6:41)
Joutro Mundo - "Vem Obata" (5:34)
Review: The latest drop of 'coffee shots' from Italian imprint Caffe Cornetto is another impressive affair showcasing re-edits and reworks by a quintet of artists. Label regulars BPlan and Fab-O join forces on opener 'Miscela Segrata', a lightly beefed-up and subtly quantized tweak of a heavyweight disco-funk jam, before rising star Reece Johnson slaps down 'Groove Espresso', a percussion-rich, all-action take on what sounds like a West African Afro-disco smasher from the mid-to-late 1970s. Over on side B, Shamarko offers-up an expert rearrangement of a low-slung, flute-sporting disco workout rich in gritty, funk-fuelled low-end heaviness, while Brazilian favourite Joutro Mundo lowers the tempo on the sun-baked, synth-sporting early evening gorgeousness of languid boogie jam 'Vem Obata'.

Afro Beat

Afro Beat (3:24)
Afro Flower (3:27)
Review: The library music crate-diggers behind Italy's Four Flies label aren't quite sure when regular collaborators Braen (an alias of composer and multi-instrumentalist Alessandro Alessandroni) and Raskovich (Guillano Sorgini) recorded these two previously unreleased tracks, but it's thought to have been around the time of the 1971 sessions for a psychedelic rock 7" by The Pawnshop. A-side "Afro Beat" is something of a saucer-eyed, Modernist delight, with the duo mixing meandering organ lines and breezy Afro-funk grooves with heavy bass. "Afro Flower", on the other hand, sounds like something that would have emerged from the studio of the Graham Bond Organization during the swinging '60s, which is no bad thing in our book.

Superstition

Superstition (5:34)
Shades Of Hades (3:08)
Review: When deciding on tracks to release on '45' for the first time, the Dynamite Cuts team seems to mine a mixture of sought-after sets, familiar favourites and overlooked obscurities. This single falls int the latter category, featuring as it does two killer cuts from Funk In Hell, a 1976 album by library music collective-turned-instrumental funk outfit Button Down Brass (a band founded by trumpeter and arranger Ray Davies). A-side 'Superstition' is simply superb: a down-low cover of Stevie Wonder classic 'Superstition' that sits somewhere between down-low library funk and Blaxploitation movie soundtracks, with a dash of big band funk thrown in. Instrumental flipside 'Shades of Hades' is equally as vibrant, with elongated electric guitar notes, heady hand percussion and spacey synth sounds combining superbly with spy-funk horns and weighty bass.As played by DJ Muro from Japan

Cumulative Collective - "Suede Bear" (7:43)
Re:Fill - "Live Vibe" (6:31)
Review: The Ten Lovers Music crew has got another seamless fusion of lunge, jazz, downtempo and deep house on its hands here courtesy of this fresh new 12" from Cumulative Collective and Re:Fill. It's Cumulative Collective who go first with 'Suede Bear', a playful late-night cut with dancing chords and jazzy keys over soul-drenched deep house beats with a funky bass riff running right through the middle. On the flip, Re:Fill's 'Live Vibe' is a more broken beat workout with spinning hi-hats and tumbling snares all held together by a bright lead synth that brings the funk.

Doris Duke - "Woman Of The Ghetto" (7:31)
Rhyze - "Free" (4:42)
Review: The Demons Singles Club is back with more devilishly good funk here in the form of Doris Duke's version of Marlena Shaw's 'Woman Of The Ghetto.' It first appeared on her 1975 alum Woman and is a searing take with full-bodied vocals full of fire. It's an urgent sound that adds weight to the social commentary of the lyrics and the b-side tune from Rhyze is just as essential. 'Fire' is a massive disco cut with stomping drums, funky bass riffs and plenty of noodling guitar riffs that make it effervesce.

Water No Get Enemy (DJ Jin Respect-To-The-Man edit) (4:02)
Review: Jaribu Afrobeat Arkestra have long been one of Japan's foremost purveyors of Fela Kuti-style goodness, though in the past they've shied away from covering the great man's works. With this must-check "45", the group has finally relented and delivered their interpretation of 'Water Get No Enemy', one of Kuti and Africa '70's best-loved tunes. Their interpretation, which was made in cahoots with DJ Ryuhei The Man, is simultaneously deliciously heavy - all low-register horns and Tony Allen style polyrhythmic drums - and surprisingly light and airy, with a sun-kissed vibe that draws the track towards Japanese spiritual jazz territory. Cro-Magnon collaborator DJ Jin delivers a flipside re-edit the emphasises all the good stuff while utilising a slightly more dancefloor-friendly arrangement.

Cliff Nobles - "My Love Is Getting Stronger" (2:47)
Russell Evans & The Nite Hawks - "The Bold" (2:21)
Review: Cliff Nobles's northern soul gem 'My Love Is Getting Stronger' is a vital part of the cannon that gets a welcome reissue here by the good folk at Matasuna. It is an empowering tune with some hugely impressive drumming, plenty of big horns and a big bongo bridge that builds the vibe. ON the flip side is an equally essential but rather different tune, 'The Bold.' It is a funky, jazz tinged workout with cosmic chords and more exceptional stick work. Both tracks were initially released in 1966 on Atlantic Records but have since become hard to source. Do not sleep.

Review: Happiest of birthdays to Super Spicy who celebrate half a decade in the game with an EP of irresistible tunes. Phunque kicks the party off with an old school vibe that pairs a superb male vocal with crisp, effective drums. Bob Musella brings sample magic on 'Baby Hot Stuff' and Ysheso, Ralo keep the disco-tinged house feels flowing with a percussive monster. After the smoother sounds of Ghosts Of Venice, the flip side brings a trio of funked-up and guitar-laced house grooves that take it back to the glory days of New York.

The Mexican (part 1) (5:14)
The Mexican (part 2) (5:28)
Review: Cover versions don't come much sweeter (or respectful) than this epic two part homage to the Babe Ruth classic. Part 1 sees the Japanese funk band laying down the foundations, paying deference to the original with their own upbeat twist. Part 2, however, is where they really let loose with each instrumentalist taking lead on the solos. With Hammond-hammering and screaming horns galore, QASB have delivered something very special here.

Messages From The Stars (Long Wave mix)
Messages From The Stars (Astro mix)
Messages From The Stars (Short Wave mix)
Review: Wilfully skeletal, kitsch 80s disco-funk from the Rah Band, whose humble origins in England's County Durham proved no stumbling block for the successes that would follow, not least the classic 70s glam/disco oddity 'The Knack', complete with balaclava-clad Top of the Pops appearance . The assembling, productive hands of one Richard A. Hewson, and the syringeal sweetnesses of then-wife Liz Hewson, is what made 'Messages From The Stars' so great. This track emerged as a modest club hit - it was TikTok that ensured its longevity many years later, as well as support from the likes of Horse Meat Disco - and could be described an inchoate form of "bedroom" pop. Though it was made simply in Hewson's home studio on a simple Roland SH5, the efficacy with which Liz's nearly-half-hearted voice is super-effective: vocal elements play back through echoic highpass filters (and cut-up echoes on the B's 'Astro Mix'), while clever whistle melodies and sudden gated snares help embed the overall theme of astral sexuality.

One Man (4:57)
No Luck (9:32)
Review: There are arguably two re-editors whose scalpel works are a cut above the rest: the mighty Danny Krivit AKA Mr K, and Chicago veteran Rahaan. Both are prolific rearrangers, with Rahaan releasing some of his greatest work on Newcastle-based Hot Biscuit Recordings. He's back on that imprint here with two more tried-and-tested revisions. Opener 'One Man' is prime Rahaan re-edit action: an obscure, eccentric, horn-heavy, soul-fired, heavily orchestrated disco jam extended, cut and tweaked in all the right places, with EQs and soul levels lightly modified to ensure maximum pleasure when played over 21st century dancefloors. Arguably even better is 'No Luck', a terrific, lightly stretched-out revision of a slap bass-powered slab of early 80s disco-boogie fusion fronted by a strong and sassy female vocalist.

Comin' Home Baby (3:12)
Review: The two tracks showcased originally featured on two separate 1967 seven-inch singles by Fred Ramirez, a self-taught Latin-jazz musician and bandleader who had a passion for recording salsa, rumba and mambo-influenced covers of soul and funk hits of the day. Both records are extremely difficult to find these days, in part because collectors rarely part with their cherished copies. The A-side version of Sam & Dave classic 'Hold On, I'm Coming' is simply superb, with Ramirez new arrangement including ear-catching Latin percussion, rousing horns and fluid style piano solos. Over on the flip Ramirez and his band interpret 1960s jazz standard 'Coming Home Baby', delivering a version that sounds like a cross between gangster movie big-band jazz, and Ramsey Lewis classic 'Wade in the Water'. Everybody Loves The Sunshine (3:39)
Review: Founded by Roy Ayers in Cincinnati in 1976 as a vehicle for his songs and productions - though, interestingly, he was never a member of the band RAMP recorded and released one album, 1977's sun-soaked jazz-funk opus, Come Into Knowledge. This fantastic 45 from South Street Records' new South Street Soul offshoot showcases two of the set's most admired and in-demand cuts. Edwin Birdsong and William Allen share production credits with Ayers on 'Daylight', a shuffling, dewy-eyed, afternoon-ready delight whose slow groove, meandering synth solos and blissful female vocals recall another Ayers' classic 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine'. Fittingly, RAMP's fine, soft-focus take on that tune can be found on side B.

Review: Michigan-via-Ohio gospel group Rance Allen have been going for decades, and thanks to Expansion Records, two of their best known tunes now have a chance at relistenership. 'I Feel Like Going' on barely saw a resurfacing on YouTube, but just one listen and we're sure... this is a shockingly important slice of wax, with slapping electronic disco-soul production embedding sax, viola and castanets in what ought to be considered a criminally undersought pair of dance opals. A modern soul masterclass.

Review: Second time around for the tenth instalment in Blend It Records' Black Aroma series of edits EPs, which has become something of a collector's item since it first landed in stores back in 2017. The repress is certainly welcome, because you'll struggle to find a more consistently strong collection of dancefloor reworks. Red Greg kicks things off with 'Ride On', a fine re-arrangement of a killer old Michael Henderson disco jam, before Specter brilliantly rewires a Hammond-rich Brazilian dancefloor jazz-funk number ('Chedda') and successfully fiddles with a low-slung South American disco-rap shuffler ('Double Dribble'). Horn-heavy jazz-funk is the order of the day on LTJ's 'Sotcha', while 'You Got Me Dreamin' is a tactile, slow-motion gospel-boogie number.

Review: Rising star Sam Redmore has a debut album on the way. That will be one to look out for in 2022, but first he's treating us to a handful of teaser singles. The latest, 'On The One', is genuinely special. Built around a skittish, Tony Allen style drum-beat and complimentary horns from the fantastic Renegade Jazz Brass Band, it's a 21st century update of the Fela Kuti Afrobeat sound topped off with rapped lead vocals from Mr Auden Allen. He continues the party-starting vibe on flipside 'Nagu', a genuinely heavy, full throttle fusion of Afrobeat and house laden with swooping strings, sun-bright funk guitar licks and weighty bass. It isn't quite as cultured as the A-side, but it's still a rock-solid peak-time bomb.

It is just one of three, yes three, 7"s John Reed and the Automatics are putting out this month and it is supercharged stuff: a-side 'Funky Mule' has powerful horns, hard hitting beats and a raw and rugged aesthetic that will demand plenty of sweat on the dance floor. Review: Funk Night Records continues to showcase the music of newcomers John Reed & The Automatics, who here drop the third of three simultaneously released seven-inch singles. Inspired by the flanged funk records of the psychedelic era, 'On The Run' adds psyche-funk guitar sounds and trippy, effects-laden lead lines to a weighty, low-slung groove full of boisterous drum-breaks, booming bass guitar and wah-wah-heavy guitar riffs. They flip the script on 'Xmas', peppering a looser funk groove with squelchy bass, spacey synths sounds and psychedelic organ riffs. It's not quite as heavy as the A-side, but still rocks harder than Santa Claus after an all-night session with Keith Richards.

Review: A jazz head with deep hip-hop roots, New York-based saxophonist Benny Reid returns with a brand-new 7" on Fat Beats, following his 2023 The Infamous Live reinterpretation. This is his latest standalone tribute, and it plays like a deliberate two-sided concept: '93 'Til Infinity' on the A, 'Day One' on the B i reworked with full reverence but plenty of vision. Reid's take on the former is all patience and atmosphere, stretching the groove into moody, modal territory without losing its swing. Flip it for a tighter, chunkier pass at the D.I.T.C. classic, where arrangements lean into low-end murk and sharper rhythmic interplay. Drawing on years of post-bop work for Concord, Reid reanimates sample culture as memory, process and momentum.

He had a slew of hits and two of them make it on to this 7". First is 'Rockin Chair' from his 1975 album It Keeps in Raining. It's mid tempo, warm and well swung with a louche vocal turn. She's In LA (feat Young Gun Silver Fox - SoCal instrumental) (4:17)
Review: Described by Legere Recordings as a 'widescreen instrumental pop anthem soaked in summer sun', 'She's In LA' sees experienced Welsh musician (and former Colorama front man) Carwyn Ellis daydream about moving to the City of Angels with a little help from Shawn Lee and Andy Platts ALA Young Gun Silver Fox. Authentically Californian in vibe and execution, with Ellis's weary lead vocals recalling the likes of Boz Scaggs and Donald Fagen above a sun-soaked, synth-sporting West Coast groove. It's utterly gorgeous and undeniably life-affirming, as is the vocal-free instrumental take showcased on side B. A future Balearic favourite, no doubt.

Review: Eddie Roberts returned to his roots on his side project THE FIRE EATERS releasing a stream of thoughtfully reworked soul jazz covers, and P-VINE is excited to be bringing two fan-favourites to 7" vinyl format. The A side is a real treat for rare groove fans with an instrumental cover of the original powerhouse single "I Believe in Miracles" by Mark Capanni. The cover of legendary Jazz keyboardest Eddie Russ is as danceable as it is elegant with its groovy mid-tempo arrangements.

Review: Isabel Roberts' mid-80s single 'Love Situation' featuring Robert Chandler, is revitalized on this limited 12" release, part of Backatcha's 'Hot Vinyl' reissue series. These UK electric-boogie-synth-funk tracks are essential for any dancefloor. 'Love Situation' is a smooth, soulful jam with a catchy melody, perfectly complemented by Chandler's vocals. The instrumental version on the same side allows the groove to take center stage, making it ideal for those crucial dancefloor moments where the music needs to shine on its own. On Side-2. 'Just Fall in Love,' continues the vibe with a romantic, yet danceable track that's just as versatile. The inclusion of its own instrumental version ensures this 12" is a complete package, offering both vocal charm and instrumental grooves. 80s fans of the groove will surely find some enjoyment with these on their turntable.

Review: A new three-track EP from Monica Rocha and Malik Malo, two prominent modern-day Chicano soul artists. While this lesser-known soul subgenre originally made its mark among a mixture of Mexican-American and Black musical cultures throughout the southwestern United States, the style has found more recent resurgence in urban hubs like California. Produced by Edward 'E-Dub' Rios, these two heaters are cover-flips of Smokey Robinson and Betty Wright respectively, and effortlessly channel the low-slung heat that could only be found in the city of angels.

Only Good For Conversation (2:23)
Review: Dynamite Cuts presents the timeless classic 'Sugar Man' by Sixto Rodriguez on a 7" vinyl. Originally released on Sussex Records, this track features a stellar lineup of musicians including Bob Babbitt on bass and Dennis Coffey on guitar, with Gordon Staples arranging the stunning strings and Mike Theodore producing. The reissue uses the original white sleeve design instead of the South African issue with a black sleeve. On Side-2, 'Only Good for Conversation,' is another standout track from Rodriguez's LP, offering a heavy groove with a bass drum loop reminiscent of Eugene McDaniels. This release is a chance to own a piece of music history at a more accessible price point than the now extremely pricey original 70s issue.

Nestor Alvarez - "Bang The Bongo" (2:52)
Review: The Original Gravity label's latest must-check missive is unusual, featuring as it does four tracks squeezed on to one limited edition seven-inch single. As the title suggests, it's Latin-themed, with two artists (overseen by Welwyn Garden City-based producer Neil Henderson) delivering two sweaty South American funk workouts apiece. Luchito Rodriguez handles side A, delivering the Tito Puente style mambo brilliance of "Hey Guajira Baby" and the insatiable, fienishly fuzzy Latin funk/boogaloo business that is "Vacilon". Over on the flip, Nestor Alvarez first offers up a beefed-up, bass-heavy taken on a familiar mambo favourite ("Lupita"), before sprinting towards heavy Latin funk territory on the insatiable "Bang The Bongo".

Jesus Saved Me (Glad) (5:03)
Review: For decades, the humble disco re-edit has offered wannabe-producers a way into music production. In recent years, there's been an upsurge in house 'edits' too - a trend that has seen countless producers combine bits of classic and obscure cuts with their own peak-time ready grooves. This debut from the previously unknown Jay Rook fits into that category. Check first opener 'Master Wonnin', where Rook turns what appears to be a classic Highlife jam into a bouncy, bass-heavy Afro-house workout, before further refining the same attractive, sun-splashed formula on 'Eme (Yeah Yeah)'. Over on side two, Rook changes tack on 'Do God a Favour', adding a touch of hip-swinging, disco-flexed gospel-house flavour to a bluesy old soul-jazz cut, while 'Jesus Saved Me (Glad)' is a filter heavy disco-house re-wire of a righteous gospel number.

Review: After 13 years have passed since his last album, Root Soul is back with a new record that is as emotionally charged as ever. Bassist, composer and sound producer Kenichi Ikeda is the man behind the project and US vocalist Erik Rico is on the full album. First though is this teaser single on At Home Sound out of Japan. It kicks off with a 2022 update of 'Freaky Power' that has sliding drum rhythms and a high speed funky bassline chasing them along. On the backside is 'She's Got It' (feat Andrea Clarke) which dangles guitar riffs, big sax lines and acrobatic soul vocals over a chunky groove.

Review: The production pair of Tuure Tammi and Juha Sarkkola hail from Hameenlinna, Finland and first came together to record as The Blassics in 2010. Initially it was an instrumental funk project that looked to record collecting, sampling and deejaying for inspiration and then ended up as a six-piece live band in 2013. Here they appear on the flip of this 7" from Odd Funk with 'I Wanna Show A Lil Trick', and they are also involved in the making of A-side cut 'Fankkisafka', which has Rosteri, a Finnish rap group from Kuopio, serving up the bars.

Review: Roundtree hit hard with the few joints they gifted to the disco world. Led by songwriter and producer Kenny Lehman, they dropped an album and a couple of singles in 1978, but then made a surprise return in 1982 for a one-shot drop of boogified perfection on Aria. 'Hit On You' is one of those simply perfect jams with a nasty bassline and all the hooks you could wish for, and Groovin clearly know what they're after as they lead with the dub mix on the A side for this reissue. There's also the remix version of the track, and an additional retouch from Moplen thrown in for good measure to give you a prime cut three ways - no bad thing in our book.

Love Will Bring Us Back Together (5:55)
Review: Roy Ayers made a number of killer disco cuts in the late 1970s, though few are quite as essential as 'Running Away', which has now been reissued by South Street Disco. Built around an instantly recognisable (and much-sampled groove), the extended 12" version is rich in rubbery, rising and falling bass, clipped guitars, spacey Rhodes motifs, superb lead vocals from Ayers and even better backing vocals courtesy of the female quintet who would later become Eighties Ladies (who's superb 'Tell Him' was reissued in 2020). Turn to the flip for another chance to savour Fever album-opener 'Love Will Bring Us Back Together', a deeper and more low-down disco groover that boasts some seriously good Clavinet riffs and another inspired Ayers' vocal.

Review: Dynamite Cuts has got a couple of Roy Ayers Ubiquity projects in the fire this month - a brilliant 7" double pack as well as this 45rpm. Both sides of this one rather take quite different paths to your affections. 'A Tear To A Smile' is high-speed and complex funk for the dance floor with loopy rhythms and Roy's mad vibes playing over the top next to some neat bass work. Flip it over and you'll find the much more deep and laid-back 'Time & Space' with its lavish cosmic keys and jazz vocals all working you into a star-gazing lather.

Review: Roy Porter's classic 1975 album Inner Feelings has long been a treasure trove of sample sources for hip-hop artists over the years. DJ Spine is one of those who made use of parts of the album's opener 'Party Time' in his own tune 'Rock.' Now for the first time that single gets reissued on 7" along with DJ Spinna's edited version on the flip. The original is a real funk classic with fat bass grooves and hefty drum breaks. This track was once released on the famous tax scam label with the artwork which is presented here. It makes for a package with a great backstory and an even better sound for lovers of rare grooves and hip-hop.

Aroop Roy takes care of the A-side of this 10" with 'Fankiando Taniador', the Latin flavoured deep cut disco and funk roller with 80s horn stabs and rumbling bass all topped with a red hot vocal full of flair. Review: If you're unfamiliar with the Ratgrave name, you're not alone: this this bustling, future funk LP marks the first time collaborators Max Graef and Julius Conrad have released anything under the alias. The set was apparently recorded at different times, and in different places, over a three-year period. Musically, it draws much inspiration from intergalactic jazz-funk, P-funk and otherworldly '80s boogie, but also feels instinctively loose, carefree and improvised. The result is a set of lo-fi cuts that sound like they were recorded straight to tape during improvisational jam sessions, but were probably far more polished and thought-out than you might expect. Either way, it's the kind of LP that gets better with each successive listen.

The project first surfaced on Funkineven's Apron Records in 2018, and now it's back on Black Focus for another trip through oddball electronics aplenty with a healthy dose of soul and funk poured in for good measure. From the catchy sing along "World Aid" to the dusty boogie hybrid of "Instant Toothpaste", this is an album crafted by a duo with serious chops that doesn't take itself too seriously. Get down, get funky, get weird.

'Shape The System' has crashing hits and dark, chugging drums, with plenty of sleazy guitar lines king out of the mix, effects and delay adding tension and a bulbous bassline bringing the weight. On the flip, 'River Art' is less dense but no less out there with its twanging riffs, muted jazz horn motifs, broken beat drum tumbles and organic percussion. It's controlled chaos that makes you shake your limbs loose. An essential leftfield cut.

Review: London-based five-piece Resolution 88 describe themselves as a "Fender Rhodes driven funk band" andTom O'Grady's outfit have become regulars round London's jazz spots, clear recognition for the part jazz-funk, in particular, plays in their trademark slow, sax-laden sound. This debut album does a good job of showcasing their sensuous sound, effortlessly sliding between horizontal moods ("Sejuicing My Squeeze"), Rhodes-and-clav-laden fluidity ("Doin' It" - a kind of Bob James tribute), off-kilter jazz-funk ("Broken Beat (Smokin Feet)"), jaunty dancefloor grooves ("Black Boobs", which comes replete with some serious analogue synth action) and far-sighted synth doodles ("Cosmic Cascade"). It's all pretty laidback, but it neatly steers clear of any "Pages from Ceefax" jazz-funk cliches.
