Chameleon (4:07)
Losalamitoslatinfunklovesong (4:28)
Review: With an irresistible blend of broken beat and nu-jazz grooves, 'Chameleon' is a enjoyable smooth jazz gem driven by funky basslines, strings, lively percussive and catchy keys. The arrangement flows effortlessly, creating a sound both sophisticated and danceableia perfect balance of complexity and accessibility. Flipping to the B-side, 'Losalamitoslatinfunklovesong' takes a more laid-back approach. Led by a warm, soulful organ, the track exudes chill vibes with its subtle funk underpinnings and jazzy finesse. The addition of a vocoder adds a playful, retro-futuristic charm, rounding out a composition that's as soothing as it is engaging.

A Story About You (4:28)
Sweet Power Your Embrace (4:07)
Review: Prolific Japanese jazzers Nautilus - made up of drummer Toshiyuki Sasaki, keyboardist Daisuke Takeuchi, and bassist Shigeki Umezawa - present their latest 7" release 'A Story About You'. It's an emotive A-and-B-sider of mournful mood, with the A-side cemented by rolling pianos and a central lyric-melody performed by Mariko's talkbox, and B-sider 'Sweet Power Your Embrace' coming as a cover of the 1977 classic by James Mason. Signaling news of a full-length album to come - you'd better fasten your seatbelts.

Expansions (4:18)
Expansions (Ryuhei The Man re-edit) (4:18)
Review: For those not familiar with the contemporary Japanese funk scene, Nautilus will no doubt be a new name. Led by drummer Toshiyuki Sasaki, the trio has spent the last five years offering up killer cover versions of everything from dancefloor jazz staple "Root Down" and Roy Ayers' "We Live In Brooklyn, Baby", to Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner" and, appropriately, Bob James' "Nautilus". Here they deliver another killer interpretation of a classic, adding layers of spacey jazz-funk instrumentation and a mind-altering vocoder vocal to the oh-so familiar grooves of Lonnie Liston Smith staple "Expansions". Japanese re-edit king Ryuhei The Man delivers his interpretation on the flip, wisely making more of the brilliant bassline and Sasaki's superb drumming.

I Can't Make You Love Me (feat Nanami Shimizu) (4:40)
Solitude (4:27)
Review: This year has been packed with new music from Japanese jazz-funk revivalists Nautilus. After a series of well-received 7"s and an album, Refrain, back in May, they now return with two more of their superbly well crafted and musical singles. 'I Can't Make You Love Me' is all splashy cymbals and tight jazz drumming, with noodling Rhodes chords and the icing on the cake - a vocal from Nanami Shimizu. Flip it over for 'Solitude' which is a much more sparse and slow jam where there is room between the beats for the starry-eyed chords and keys to real make their mark. This is golden stuff once more from this fine collective.

The World Is A Ghetto
Review: Japanese jazz trio Nautilus return for their blitzingly fast jazz fusions, laying down two new ones, 'Virtual Insanity' and 'The War Is A Ghetto'. The former track - originally a Jamiroquai hit - comes as a mega-fast-drummed vocal version with Mizuki Kamata on beltings. The B-sider, meanwhile, comes as a broken-beaty nu-jazz version of War's 'The World Is A Ghetto', providing a clever titular reference and a nice instrumental slinker to match.

Skycrapers (4:01)
Another World (4:39)
Review: Japan's premier jazz funk covers outfit Nautilus are back on the scene with another 7" of those pristine grooves they lay down so well. They've been busy lately, recording the Serendipity album with Lisa Decker and just releasing the Reconnection album amongst other singles and EPs, but once again they've got more beautifully executed music to impart to the world. 'Skyscrapers' rides on a taut breakbeat and features some slinky bass guitar, striking an ever-so-slightly moody tone. 'Another World' is all about the snappy piano hooks, with the band following dutifully behind each melodic passage and winding up in something sweet and funky - as if you expect any less from this band.

Life (feat Emi Tawata) (3:58)
Master Blaster (Jammin') (4:35)
Review: New-gen rare groove band Nautilus, operating out of Japan, deliver their latest 7" record, 'Life'. Just two crisp, piquant, fresh, and bubbly uncorkings in sound - 'Life', featuring vocalist Emi Tawata, and the instrumental 'Master Blaster'- are here heard sprayed like buckshot across the stereo system. The former is a candid admission by Tawata of her fear of the dark and ghosts, one which compels the listener to ponder the song's spiritual metaphor - "I'd rather have a piece of toast, watch the evening news" being the lyric of note - while the latter is a comparatively muted four-to-the-floor funk inflammation, held together by a phat but tricksy drum line and overgirding Rhodes.

Why I Came To California (feat Eki Shola & Denise M'Baye) (4:05)
What You Won't Do For Love (feat Ryuto Kasahara - Soul Supreme remix) (4:04)
Review: Nautilus brings smooth grooves with 'Why I Came To California' on Oonops Drops. Side-1's title track features Eki Shola and Denise M'Baye, blending classy funk, soul, and pop into a sophisticated jam. The song shines with its elegant piano and seamless jam section, offering a timeless vibe. On Side-2, Ryuto Kasahara's Soul Supreme remix of 'What You Won't Do For Love' revitalises the classic funk tune. The remix retains the original's charm while injecting a fresh, soulful energy. Nautilus delivers a stylish and heartfelt homage to funk, making this a hot 7" for fans of the genre.

Cat: MAD 026B. Rel: 22 Mar 21
El Amor Es Un Bicho (2:29)
El Diablo (2:43)
Review: The story behind this Henry Nelson record is a remarkable one. The Colombian artist recorded the two Latin soul tracks featured on it after moving to Spain in the late 1960s. As no Spanish labels liked what they heard, he was forced to return to South America and the songs were eventually released on an obscure Argentinian label in 1969. Original copies are a genuine rarity, hence this Madmua reissue. A-side 'Al Emor Es Un Bicho' is wonderfully fiery and fierce, with Nelson and his musical collaborators brilliantly fusing elements of psych-rock, funk, soul and British beat music. Flipside 'El Diablo', a confirmed Latin funk stomper blessed with a sing-along chorus, is equally as righteous.

I've Been Fooled (3:55)
Review: According to the crew behind the Preservation Project label, the two tracks showcased on this fine 7" single were found on a one off acetate, abandoned in a New Jersey studio sometime in the 1970s. Little is known about the band behind the record, which was recently rediscovered in the now-defunct studio space. A-side "Strugglin" is something of a dusty gem: a thrillingly low-slung chunk of heavy funk blessed with righteous male and female soul vocals and some nifty guitar work. The jazzy guitars come to the fore on slower flipside "I've Been Fooled", a heart-breaking ballad smothered in sustained organ chords and dewy-eyed female vocals.

Review: Nick Bike makes a fourth - yes, fourth - 2024 Q1 appearance with 'Steady Rockin'', following up the prolific producer and editor's early-year swathe of releases, also including '808 Doves', 'Feels So Good', and 'Rollerskatin''. This is the only one of the four to be released on Bike's very own Chosen Spokes label, which oils the gears, shunts the V-brakes, and whips out the Presta for a veritable pedal-pumping in the medley/breaks/ soul/funk/dance veins. This time, we're in for a treat, with Bike reinterpreting a classic, making for a well-known melange sampled from bits of the Queen Of Soul herself.

Opening with 'Jesus,' Nimble sets the tone with gospel-infused house beats and a captivating bassline. Review: Dam Funk and Nite Jewel first joined forces way back in 2009 for what most thought was a one-off collaboration. Here, they're reunited once more for their first joint 12" release. Nite-Funk is every bit as special as you'd expect, taking the best of both artists' musical repertoire - Dam Funk's authentic '80s synth-soul, and Nite-Funk's sparkling, deep analogue synth-pop - and turning them into something new and involving. The EP boasts vocal and instrumental versions of four tracks: the Michael Jackson style '80s soul-pop of "Let Me Be Me", the heartfelt, late night radio slow jam "Love X2", the sax-laden, Sade-goes-soulful house flex of "U Can Make Me", and the deliciously dreamy "Don't Play Games".

Review: Jim Sharp & Nick Bike are two of Canada's finest beat makers and here they turn their attention to the legendary Marvin Gaye. His 'Inner City' from the timeless What's Going On album gets a modern update from Jim Sharp that retains the soulful vocal of the original but with new drums. They're crisp and tight but funky, and the bendy chords and melodic motifs flesh it out. On the reverse is a Power Mix by Nick Bike that ups the weight and stomp of the drums and layers in the wordless ad libs from the original to bring the soul.

Review: Here's yet another rare '80s compilation with even more deep cuts than the last. Where do they find them all? Heavenly Sweetness clearly know but they ain't telling! They are showing though, and here on Digital Zandoli they reveal 12 newly discovered disco, boogie and zouk tracks recorded about 30 years ago in the West Indies. We're clearly spoilt for choice on this record, but highlights include the synthetic sea breeze grooves of Puzzle Pulsion's "Mwoin Ka Songe", the mellow Afro grooves of Zanman's "Poutchi" and the abstract body music via a sandy beach vibes of OR EA's "Biguine Inferno".

Always bringing something a little different to the house and disco edit game, this time they've reached out to the legendary Chez Damier to team up with label boss Camille and Italian producer Nico Lahs in assembling a compilation of on point edits that will have any keen digger in a frenzy. Across two slabs of wax we get respectfully touched up versions spanning a range of styles. Review: Ian Carr and the Nucleus crew were real favourites of US hip hop master Madlib. He valued their dark, brooding, menacing beats and spooky soundtracks and this album is a perfect example of that adsorbing broodiness. It came on Vertigo in 1973 and was in part funded by the Arts Council of Great Britain. It started off life as a live show and then with an expanded cast become an album recording with help from vocalist Norma Winstone. Be With have remastered the whole record from original tapes and the sleeve has also been restored to its full original glory.

Nijimadeno Cinderella (Friday Magic) was her second album, and featured myriad references to classical literature and fantasy in the name of pop ethereality. This reissue, timeless in its pushing of the J-pop precursor kayokyoku, comes at no better time!

Review: Brazilian songwriter Milton Nascimento has a remarkable catalogue behind him, beginning in the late 60s and running continuously since. Originally released alongside the recently repressed Maria Maria, here the 2002 album Ultimo Trem (Last Train) stands on its own as a startlingly beautiful body of work steeped in Brazilian folk. There are tracks that drift through scenes with expressive ease, such as the spellbinding acoustic suite "A Viagem". The haunting grace of "A Lua Girou" will stay with you long after the last note plays, and so runs an album packed throughout with such moments.

Highlights include the opening klang of 'Vital Signs' with its driving drum break giving way to a fantastic planet-esque sea of modular squealings and contractions and the abstract and disarmingly groovy plod of 'Possible Danger'.

They have been prolific again this year with somewhere around six new releases and now this welcome Revival album. Toshiyuki Sasaki's group are dab hands at limber, expressive grooves, and that comes through on the A side as Nautilus lay down some pitch-perfect covers including Gil Scott-Heron's 'The Bottle' and William DeVaughn's 'Be Thankful For What You've Got'. On the flip, Sasaki and Anna Sato offer some original tracks from their side-project, with Sato laying down powerful vocals over raw rhythm sections which don't hold back on the funk.

Review: It's hard to talk about anything other than the electrifying intensity Jorge Navarro's music manages to hit, no matter what the beginning of the track sounded like. A master of funk, he's among the most significant artists to help shape and direct jazz in Argentina, taking up responsibility for his homeland's mood, timing and rhythmic personality from the 1950s onwards, with this seven-track album arguably the most definitive Navarro moments, not least given the meaning of its title.

An expression used to describe something with great energy or strength, at this point in his career the aficionado had just spent a few years in the US, and the inspiration from that trip, the ideas and jumping off points were distilled into this record. Hence its remarkable immediacy and captivating sense of spontaneity.

Review: Originally released in CD format back in 2008, Z Records come through with a timely vinyl pressing of the Destination: Boogie compilation put together by label boss Dave 'Joey Negro' Lee and Sean 'dusty fingers' P. As the suffix suggests, this compilation handily draws together all manner of 80s classics from the boogie and electro funk canon and is a must for any budding Greg Wilson's out there. Naturally pared down from the sizeable original 20 track Double CD release, this double vinyl edition nonetheless still brandishes ten cuts primed for the open minded discotheques and you'll be hooked as soon as the 1983 one hit wonder "Ease Out" from Mid Air reverberates into action.

Review: Since its initial release in 2007, Joey Negro and Sean P's superb Supafunkanova Viol 1 - a loving tribute to disco and boogie era funk - has become an in-demand item, with copies changing hands for significant sums online. To coincide with the release of a follow-up, the duo has decided to re-release the compilation, this time with new artwork but an almost identical track list. If you missed out first time around, it should be an essential purchase. It's packed with killer dancefloor material, from the bass-propelled dancefloor hustle of BLT's "Tighten Up" and South Bronx's "The Bottom Line", to the eccentric boogie-rap of Jahneen's "Gigolette" and sprightly, soul-meets-P-funk of Leprechaun's "Reach Out (& Touch Someone)".

Review: When Joey Negro and Sean P established the Disco Spectrum series of compilations back in 1999, few DJs were digging for disco. Almost two decades on, we're told that disco was the sound of summer 2017 (and the summer before that). The time is right, then, for this "best of", containing the finest cuts from the series' three previous volumes. This time round, the crate-digging duo has opted for a mixture of familiar favourites ("Spread Love", "Out Of My Hands (Love's Taking Over)", "Bourgie Bourgie", "Together Forever" etc.) and harder to find gems. These include Caribbean disco classic "Trinidad" by John Gibbs and the US Steel Orchestra, Blair's sumptuous "Nightlife" and Larry Levan's brilliant remix of Syreeta's synth-laden slammer "Can't Shake Your Love".

Review: Originally released on CD and digital download way back in 2010, Joey Nergo's superb "Backstreet Brit Funk" compilation finally comes to vinyl. Given the recent rise in interest in "Brit-funk" - an early-to-mid '80s UK style rooted in jazz-funk, boogie, electro and soul - the timing seems perfect. It contains some genuinely killer cuts throughout, with highlights including the Hammond-heavy hustle of Ed Bentley's "Bentley Boogie", the scorching sax solos and huggable grooves of Mirage's "Summer Grooves", the breezy jazz-funk of Ritual's "Sore Lip" and the sun-kissed electrofunk/lovers rock fusion of The Cool Notes' "I Wanna Dance". The collection also contains a smattering of tidy, DJ-friendly re-edits from the long-serving Essex producer.

Review: It's been eight years since Joey Negro put together Backstreet Brit Funk, a fine compilation that shone a light on Britain's late '70s and early '80s underground disco, soul, jazz-funk and electro scenes. This belated sequel, then, is long overdue. This time round, the selections are arguably even deeper, with highlights including the low-slung disco-funk of Rick Clarke's "Potion", the glassy-eyed breeziness of Paradise's "Stop & Think", the footworker-friendly jazz-funk riot of Touchdown's "Ease Your Mind" and the samba-fired carnival flavours of "Brazelia" by Brazelia. There's also a fine bonus in the shape of a previously unreleased dub of Janet Kay's overlooked Brit-boogie slammer "Eternally Grateful" that's almost worth the admission price on its own.

Review: Network released their one and only album I Need You originally back in 1984. The US electrofunk project was made up of various studio musicians from the funk world and weirdly, this album was never actually released in the United States. Now a repress rights that wrong and allows people all over the world to reveal in the boogie baselines of old school jams like 'Pump It Up' and the angular, crashing beats and funky bass riffs of 'Hard To Give It Up.' There are more upbeat and busy numbers like 'Somewhere Hanging Over My Head' for peak time moments and Prince-liked funk bangers such as 'Taste Yo Lips' helping to make this a must cop.
