Stealin' James
Stealin' James (limited 7")
Cat: 006. Rel: 15 Apr 14
Stealin' James (part I - edit)
Stealin' James (part II - edit)
Review: DJ Format's homage to the original cut and paste records that pulled generously from the archives of James Brown was originally planned as just the one mix, but Format had so many ideas & samples left over that he decided to do a second mix, resulting in this record Stealin' James Parts 1 & 2. First released back in 2008 on a limited 12", Stealin' James Parts 1 & 2 sold out swiftly and has been the subject of numerous requests. You can all calm down now as Format has decided to release this special 7" edition of the record with two new edits of those mixes - guaranteed floor fillers the both of them.

Stealin' James (part 1)
Stealin' James (part 2)
Review: "Stealin' James" is DJ Format's modern day cut 'n' paste tribute to the music of the sadly deceased Godfather of Soul, James Brown. It is very much in keeping with the style of the classic JB 'cut-up' records such as Coldcut's "Payback Mix", Double D & Steinski's "Lesson 2" and of course "Feelin' James", reputedly the work of Danny Krivit. Part one kicks off with the well known intro to "Get Up, Get Into It and Get Involved" before firing through intricately layered and perfectly timed samples of all the well known and well loved breaks. Not just confined to the work of The Godfather himself, it takes in the productions of his closest collaborators and family of musicians whilst giving a nod to some of the hip-hop records that sampled the tracks and introduced a whole new generation of people to his timeless music.

Couldn't Get Anywhere (DJ Goce Yedit) (3:29)
All These Problems (Dj Goce Solution) (4:00)
Review: Dusty Donuts is a mighty fine label that deals only in the most authentic hip hop beats. They have been a while due to going son in the world from pandemics to warfare but now make an essential return with Balkan phenom DJ Goce. It's inspired by the neo-soul of the late 90s and eery 90s, with crisp boom-bap drums that chelate great Dilla would be proud of. The A-side is full of catchy loops and yearning vocals while the flip rolls a little deeper with 'All These Problems' also having snappy but dusty MPC drums and a nagging vocal that you never want to end.

Edit For A Dollar (4:23)
ReDrum Genocide (3:14)
Review: Macedonian producer DJ Goce has been doing his thing for a while now, though this cheeky seven-inch single actually marks his first outing since he served up a cut-and-paste mix of Eastern European hip-hop in 2015. First up is "Edit For a Dollar", a bumpin' revision of 2010 Aloe Blacc classic "I Need A Dollar" that underpins the Stones Throw-released soul jam with chunky new hip-hop beats. It's tastefully done, offering a great balance between the original's piano-driven instrumentation, soaring vocals and dancefloor weight. Over on side B, "ReDrum Genocide" more than lives up to its name, with Goce wrapping bustling new MPC hip-hop beats around Gregory Porter's superb song "Genocide". We can confirm that Goce has treated the original version with due reverence, despite the addition of new percussive elements.

Dusty PCP (DJ Goce edit) (3:31)
Prosciutto Smile (DJ Goce edit) (4:01)
Review: Although his vinyl releases are sporadic at best, DJ Goce has rather a good track record when it comes to breathing new life into classic cuts - as was proved by last year's excellent outing on Dusty Donuts. The Russian producer is at it again here, opening his account with a fine rework of Gil Scott-Heron classic 'The Bottle' in which the poet-turned-musician's iconic vocal rides an attractive bed of head-nodding hip-hop beats, boogie style synth-bass, fluttering flutes and shimmering synth sounds. In contrast, 'Prosciutto Smile' delivers an excellent re-edit of an organ-sporting chunk of break-driven jazz-funk deepness that's arguably even more potent than the A-side.

Volume 1: The Sound Of Mercury Rising
DJ HARVEY / VARIOUS
Cat: PIKES 12001. Rel: 31 May 18
Tony Esposito - "Danza Dell Acqua" (5:08)
Tore - "She's A Lady" (4:04)
Elkin & Nelson - "Abran Paso - Ahoa (Enrolle)" (4:08)
Van McCoy & The Soul City Symphony - "Spanish Boogie" (3:33)
Review: Soon, DJ Harvey will release The Sound of Mercury Rising, a compilation themed around some of the music championed at his summer residency at Pikes Hotel, Ibiza. This four-track taster 12" not only acts as a sampler for the CD version, but also offers the chance to own four excellent and hard-to-find gems. You'll struggle to find a more Balearic disco cut than Danish outfit Tore's 1979 killer "She's a Lady" - think the Bee-Gees with Flamenco guitars - while Elkin & Nelson's "Abran Paso - Aboa (Enrole)" is a spiraling chunk of flamenco-psychedelia fusion. Elsewhere, Van McCoy & Soul City Symphony's "Spanish Boogie" is a jaunty disco number full of crunchy Clavinet lines and rising horn lines, while Tony Esposito's "Danza Dell'Acqua" is as eccentric and wide-eyed as they come.

Travel Jazz
Review: "It all starts with old records" goes the quote on the biography for DJ Ian Head, a dusty fingered selector from Brooklyn who's been serving up mixtapes and podcasts via his Everydaybeats website since 2006. It makes sense that his debut vinyl release would lean on a classic of veritable terms in Kool & The Gang's "Summer Madness". A cover version that seeps with reverence to the original, Head's take on "Summer Madness" eschews sampling in favour of playing keys, live percussion and drum programming. It's a subtle take that will hit the more untrained ears when that classic synth line unfolds. On the flip Mr Head drops a more upbeat number in "Travel Jazz" that has some excellent brushed percussion.

Evil (7" instrumental) (4:55)
Review: Legendary DJ and producer DJ Jazzy Jeff might be best known for his work in the world of hip hip but here he dives foot first into some fresh house grooves. 'Evil' is the sort of steamy, funk laced gem that you might expect to come from the studio one certain Moodymann. The lush guitar licks, noodling keys and well placed vocal samples all ooze authenticity and class. They meld the old with the new into something simple irresistible. A fine instrumental pairs things back even further for more straight up dance floor thrills.

Let The Funk Hit 'Em (3:56)
90% Of Main Source (4:04)
Review: TakeFingz is a new label out of Brisbane that won plenty of fans with its first offering and now comes on strong with a second bristling brew of beats. Much like Toby Gee who was behind the first 45rpm, Deejay Katch is a member of the Forty Five Kings Collective and has been laying down beats ever since the 80s while also being a key part of Resin Dogs, a famed Aussie hip-hop crew, since 1996. He opens with the unmistakable vocals Rakim for and centre on the -aide over timeless boom bop, them reworks a Gwen McRae break from '90% of Me Is You' with classic soul and hip-hop production on the flip. Two more fine fusions.

Give Me The Message (Scene 1) (3:41)
Give Me The Message (Scene 2) (4:06)
Review: This is the fourth installment of the Take Fingz series by DJ Katch, the renowned Australian turntablist and producer active since the late 90s. Katch has effortlessly built up a characteristically "furtive" sound; something in his choice of samples, centring on streetwise funk and jazz, plus distinctive mixing of iconic verses from throughout hip-hop history, make for a feeling of being watched by undercover cops and/or of much being at stake. 'Give Me The Message' comes as a funky mashup of Grandmaster Flash's classic and a, plus a stripped-down alternate version on the B, which is scratchier and choppier. Up to you which you play, Mx. DJ.

90% Of Main Source (4:04)
Review: First released in 2022, now comes this limited edition 7" vinyl reissue of DJ Katch's real-heavy, unf***withable single 'Let The Funk Hit 'Em, a veritably electrifying contribution to contremporary hip-hop, funk and breaks by the Australian DJ and producer. Built around cut-up/turntablist mixes of classic funk and hip-hop, the B-side also contains a gem, '90% Off Main Source', which is more medley-oriented in its sampling.

Give Me The Message (Scene 2)
Review: The latest release from the TakeFingz label, DJ Katch's 7" single, dives into the blaxploitation soundscape with a fresh twist on a classic 80s hip-hop track. This installment, the fourth in Katch's series, reimagines Grandmaster Flash's iconic 'The Message,' splitting the track into two sidesiScene A and Scene B. Side-1 features an extended funky loop, evoking the feel of a hero driving into the sunset during the credits, while still retaining a vibrant dance floor groove. Side-2 offers a stripped-down, choppier version, perfect for DJs to mix or scratch. Katch's rework celebrates 50 years of hip-hop with his signature style, blending streetwise funk and jazz with distinctive samples and iconic verses. Played by notable DJs like The Allergies and Craig Charles, this release showcases Katch's talent for creating a "furtive" sound, blending classic hip-hop with a touch of cinematic flair.

Let's Dance (Across The Floor) (3:34)
Go 'head (3:02)
Review: TakeFingz returns with its seventh release and offers up a double A-side 7" tailored for dancefloor devastation. On Side A, DJ Katch reworks classic funk breaks into a groove-heavy party igniter that betrays some seriously sharp turntable skills and crowd-moving instincts. It's a surefire weapon for any set in high-energy settings. On the flip, DJ Toby Gee drops a bass-driven boogie funk jam packed with vintage chants and break-heavy grooves. Both tracks are precision-crafted with nods to B-Boy culture among them perfect for bodypoppers and lockers alike.

Re Create #01 (3:39)
Review: Sometimes a record drops and you just know it's going to be hot. This is one of those records, an essential 7" from Bloom and Japanese talent DJ Koco aka Shimokita, who has been spinning 45s since 2011 and can juggle beats like Messi can juggle a ball. He is a favourite with the likes of Gilles Peterson and is likely to win many new fans with this one. 'World Famous (feat 45Trio)' is a gloriously jazzy, soulful sound with funk drum breaks and warm, organic percussive tumbling next to natty chords and a killer bassline. Add in the equally irresistible 'Re Create #01' on the flip and you have a sure-fire future classic, so do not sleep.

Re-Create #02
Review: Japanese talent DJ Koco aka Shimokita is a hardcore 45rpm devotee. They are his chosen tools as a beat-juggling DJ who can do logic-defying things with his grooves. He is a regal on Bloom and already dropped serious heat in January with 'World Famous'. This time he is back with a fresh take on 'Made In New York' which is a 1985 classic by renowned Brazilian funk and jazz pianist Tania Maria. He brings his signature hip-hop flair and creativity with his trusted crew, 45trio, and enlists the dynamic saxophonist King TJ (DA-Dee-MiX) to elevate things further.

Nah Gun Nah Heat (3:43)
Feel Like Standing (3:21)
Review: The figurative "battle weapon" is a kind of warring sonic heuristic; a dirty, up-your-sleeve musical "tool" made expressly for the MVP DJ to use in times of soundclash-y trouble. The Battle Weapons label know this all too well, and here they welcome new trainee assailant DJ Maars to demo his skills in the colosseum, bridging a fine line of recognisability and productive sample-flippage. 'A Nah Gun Nah Heat' brews Snoop Dogg's 'Drop It Like It's Hot' and Doug E. Fresh's 'La-Di-Da-Di' to delicious acapella effect, whilst 'Feel Like Standing' smashes Ludacris and Marcia Griffiths in an almost fated blend. Why didn't anyone else think of these before?

Review: Anyone who has heard DJ Marky do one of his "non D&B" sets will know that his love of funk, soul, disco and boogie is real, while there's far more classic Brazilian music in his record collection than some may expect. It makes sense then that he's been asked to provide the follow-up to DJ Format's Brazil 45s box set and pick some vintage carnival-ready gems of his own from Mr Bongo's bulging vaults. There are naturally some stone-cold classics present - see Jorge Ben's floor-slayer 'Take it Easy My Brother Charles' and the boogie-era smoothness of Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetta's 'Eva' - but also plenty of lesser-known samba and MPB gems stretched across the five "45s".

Now he's up on Friday's Funky 45 with a hip-hop rooted re-flip to get party people the world over rocking out. 'Marrrtin's Scenario' does a damn fine job of re-positioning A Tribe Called Quest's classic 'Scenario' with some organ-soaked funk, while 'Enta Humpty' goes heavy on the boom bap breaks to provide a heads down groove that should get the breakers breaking and the freakers freaking. Jam (original version)
Review: Exceedingly rare and sought after export business right here. Japanese crate digger and beat shredder Muro is known for unearthing the most obscure samples and loops and recreating a narrative that you usually only hear in horror films or nightmares. 1999's horn-tickling "Jam" is no exception and will find favour amongst Dilla and Flying Lotus fans alike. J Rocc's edit is even crazier as it ups the tempo and adds a whole load of glitches along the way. Vibrant but viscous.

Review: Since emerging last autumn, Newcastle-based Hot Biscuit Recordings has dropped a clutch of fine re-edit releases, mostly (though not entirely) courtesy of Chicago legend Rahaan. Here DJ Nature (AKA NYC-based exiled Bristolian Milo Johnson, once a founder member of the legendary Wild Bunch soundsystem) gets his chance to shine across a must-check double-pack. He first delivers a weighty, loopy, dancefloor dub style rearrangement of a suspenseful and low-slung disco treat ('Feel Dub'), before delivering a scalpel style edit of a string-laden disco-soul number ('Disco Power') and expertly stretching out a sensual, low-slung Fatback Band classic ('Midnite Freak'). To round things off, he lightly dubs out a shuffling disco groover ('Want Your Loving') and delivers a heavy take on a Windy City disco classic ('Chi-Town Theme').

Review: As the man behind so many of the beats for Jurassic 5, not to mention an in-demand producer in many other places, Nu Mark has got chops for days. Roaming free on his own Hot Plate label, last year's Run For Cover was loaded with crisp, seriously funkified gems, and now two of the best have been pressed up as a tidy 7" for all those who love their platters compact. On the A side, 'Everybody Everybody' throws some tropical tones and exuberant organs into the blender with tough boom bap and plenty more besides, making for one sunny blast of a tune. With the attention reaching fever pitch, he's unleashed one of the biggest cuts on the LP. Hooking up with the dollar-hungry Aloe Blacc, it's a horn-heaving slice of hip-hop funk that pushes all the right buttons. "Tough Break" is a double-time deal sealer. Review: DJ Nu-Mark brings the skills once again with his latest 7". The acclaimed DJ and producer mixes up funk, dance and hip hop here and with Lonely Boy offers a fresh new take on a well known Deee-Lite classic. The trombone form the original is well suited to ape the original whole; the vocals remain intact as broad brass sounds and big fat drums all add weight and power. Flip it over and you will find a new version of another stone cold great - Donell Jones' 'U Know What's Up'. Here it becomes a shiny synth pop cover with vocoder vocals.

Review: Handsome Boy Modeling School is an American duo made up of hip-hop beatmakers Dan the Automator of Gorillaz association and rince Paul from projects with Stetsasonic, De La Soul and Gravediggaz. Dan the Automator assumes his DJ Octagon Palais for the opera here - a hard hitting and deep cut rap with plenty of manic DJ scratching and big stabs. Handsome Boy Modelling School then link up for the flip side 'Holy Calamity' which is another floor filler with bold brass and mad scratching. Both tunes hark back to a golden era of rap and will get any floor pumping.
