Review: Leeds-based label Turnend Tapes showcase the wide and very assured skills of Malmo man Martin Abrahamsson aka Bauri across a choice selection of five tracks from the more thoughtful and atmospheric end of the techno scale. That's not to say there aren't grooves aplenty going on. Opening track 'Zoom0036' has some irresistibly shiny, downbeat electro moves, offset by a touch of Autechre-like ghostliness. 'Jody' comes on like Drexciya at their perkiest, with a soupcon of Air Liquide's cheeky phasing, while 'Sunrise (take 2)' has the majesty and simplicity of Aphex's first 'Ambient Works'. Flip it over for 'Easter Sunday', where streamlined polymetric machine funk and solar flare arpeggios do a merry dance, before 'Feeling Reprise' finishes things off with spiralling half-speed beats and yet more melodic grandeur rising out of the mix. Abrahamsson has a long, impressive pedigree with more alter egos than you've had hot dinners, but this is up there with his most original and confident efforts. It's a Flow-brainer.

Review: Formed in the early 80s and later based in Weston-super-Mare, Coil remain one of the UK’s most enigmatic experimental outfits—combining ambient electronics, industrial rhythm and spoken-word surrealism into something ritualistic and deeply unclassifiable. This 2xLP reissue revives their final studio work, first issued in incomplete CD-R form in 2004 before being completed by Peter Christopherson and Danny Hyde in 2006 following the death of Jhonn Balance. Compared to the sprawling mysticism of their earlier catalogue, these tracks are leaner, sharper—shaped by the influence of live performance and Christopherson’s then-new fascination with digital production. ‘The Gimp (Sometimes)’ creeps through looped distortion and narcotic drone, while ‘Teenage Lightning (10th Birthday Version)’ refracts a prior track into a marimba-laced polyrhythmic pulse. The two-part ‘Sex With Sun Ra’ threads jazz reverence through throbbing synthesis, balancing paranoia and humour. ‘All the Pretty Little Horses’ is perhaps their most unexpected cover—a whispered lament that closes the circle on Coil’s fragile, feral grace. This isn’t an archival exercise, but a document of Coil’s transformation—where live-band muscle, software trickery and deep emotional currents pull their sound somewhere new. The result is bleak, bold, and eerily accessible by Coil standards.

Review: Spanning five EPs beginning with the 2002 EP 'Vrioon', the VIRUS compendium marks an important era in the shared history of minimalist magna Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto. The look-back comes after the duo first connected through a mutual appreciation for each other's work in the early 2000s: Sakamoto had become interested in experimental electronica and came across Nicolai's (Noto's) minimalisms under the Alva Noto moniker. Intrigued by the precision and texture of Nicolai's sound, Sakamoto reached out; though he was hardly able to predict the unbalanced, restlessly abstract expressionist sound to follow: the sonic equivalent of a sputtery colour field painting.

Recounting an 11th-century Persian tale - centered on the charismatic and enigmatic Hassan-i Sabbah, leader of the Nizari Ismailis and founder of the Order of Assassins - this is a shadowy, ninja-black-wax initiation into an esoteric order of spies. Laibach's work blends classical Persian poetry, minimalist orchestral textures, and industrial elements, reflecting both historical propaganda tactics and Bartol's critique of rising Fascism in 1930s Italy. Review: Adam Winchester and Laurie Osborne (probably still best known as Appleblim) are Wrecked Lightship and they have an inventive approach to dub, breaks and bass. Their work creates an immersive world full of rich, atmospheric textures and the latest example of that is Drained Strands, a new album for Peak Oil full of fragmented, genre-blurring sounds. The six-tracker is full of experimentation and new ideas from the off. 'Delinquent Spirits' for example is a jumble of jungle breaks and vast basslines with minimal percussion, 'Reeling Mist' is warm, blissed out dub and 'Somnium Sands' is an eerie and evocative world of synth designs and industrial decay.

Review: Calling the curtain on Field Records' Waterworks trilogy, Yui Onodera turns his ear to confluences of hydrology and history, dedicating his latest record to Japan's Kiso Three Rivers and their transformation by 19th-century Dutch engineering. The Kiso, Nagara and Ibi rivers, once prone to catastrophic flooding, were reshaped under the guidance of Johannes de Rijke, whose work helped protect Nagoya from seasonal deluge by 1912. Onodera, known for his nuanced sound architecture, approaches this subject with a finely honed ear for subtlety, layering quiet field recordings with fuller instrumentation, evoking the widening of a river from brook to strait. Lyrics and melodies by Phizmiz act as a connective spine, while the project as a whole embraces an "exquisite corpse" approach, multitracks traded over oceans and timelines, forming a gaudily grotesque patchwork resistant to linearity. As always with Bennett's work, Copia blurs the borders of past, present and potential, offering a poignant meditation on creativity.

Review: Lempuyang is a label you will know and respect for its high quality stream of immersive dub techno. Now the man behind it, Alastair Kelly, debuts a new label with none other than revered UK techno mainstay Ibrahim Alfa Jnr. He opens up with 'Component A' which is a moody melange of slow, broken dub beats and fizzing synths. There is further experimentation on 'Untitled B2 1' which pairs a churning dub rhythm with naive and innocent melodies and lots of li-fi static. 'Entangled' ups the ante with the suggestion of a fast paced rhythm through a skeletal groove and the flip brings broken beat dub weight, meaning and percussive bass with a 2-step swagger then deep introspection on the closer. A classy EP that suggests this label will be well worth watching.

Review: The work of Dalham (Jon Michaelides) often comes accompanied by textual musings on existential themes, and his latest record And The Sun is no exception, hearing him quip on the mooted tulip that is generative AI: “As humankind strives to create artificial intelligence what will faith, love, or morality look like to a nascent consciousness? Will it be capable of understanding its creators who often hold logic and superstition within themselves?” So do questions of climate, macro-scale recklessness, and internal contradiction abound on this new record; an eight-track sublime that fits in well with the label’s retromodernist, sometimes neo-pagan aesthetic sensibility. A weird Western ambient odyssey, where one abstract electronic artist’s resident Suffolk surroundings merge with the same piano-led, drum machine-mapped scenes, not also long ago explored in 2024’s ‘Alive In Wonderland’.

There is a delightful lightness of touch to these deep dubwise explorations on the newly emerging False Aralia label. Drums lap like gentle waves, synths unfurl as softly as passing clouds and smudged, ghostly vocals from Loveshadow’s Anya Prisk bring romance. 'Externalism 02' is brilliantly wistful - barely there pads hint at emotional pain but dissipate before you hurt too much. 'Externalism 03' is a more lo-fi and minimal work with shuffling drums and murky low ends coalescing into a tender and bubbling soundscape then 'Externalism 04' is a sonic collage that is always shifting its focus from flickering candles to blurry pads. These are hugely experimental but warmly comforting sounds.

Review: False Aralia is a popular houseplant native to Taiwan but also the name of this new experimental label which has got us intrigued. We don't know who or what Iri Gram is but we do know having listened to this that they make intricately designed dub, minimal, ambient and sound art fusions that sound like nothing else but also conjur up familiar feelings and nostalgia for forgotten memories. All four are couched in dub with wispy melodies and frayed edges, smudged surfaces and poly rhythms that range from slow and bubbly to more urgent and fractured. They all endlessly mutate and leave you lost in a whole new sound world but wanting more.

Review: Since Radiohead went on hiatus a few years back, Thom Yorke has thrown himself into all sorts of solo and collaborative projects. His latest sees him join forces with Sydney-based British electronic music stalwart Mark Pritchard for an album that expands on their previous collaboration (the superb 'Beautiful People' from Pritchard's 2018 album Under The Sun). It's a breathtakingly brilliant concoction all told, with the pair conjuring ethereal, oddball and immersive songs in which Yorke's distinctive vocals - sometimes delivered as you'd expect, other times layered-up, mutilated or utilised as textures - rise above backing tracks made with unusual synths and drum machines, and variously indebted to ambient, IDM, ghostly electronica, lo-fi beat-scapes and the gripping intensity of horror soundtracks. Review: Composed in New York by the Baltimore-born minimalist Philip Glass, Music With Changing Parts marks a decisive shift in his development—from austere process music to the more vivid, colour-rich sound of his later compositions. Performed with free instrumentation, the piece allows musicians to switch between eight staves at specified cues, generating abrupt shifts in texture and timbre. Though its melodic material remains tightly looped and minimal, changes in orchestration continuously refresh the sonic landscape. Most striking is the psychoacoustic illusion Glass observed during rehearsals: when multiple players repeated the same short patterns, sustained tones seemed to emerge on their own. He eventually formalised this in the score, permitting long notes to enhance the effect. What results is a hallucinated resonance that pulses and flickers—an early indication of the harmonic depth he would later bring to works like Einstein on the Beach.

Review: Kyntral is a co-founder of the so-far so-sophisticated Argentinian label Danza Nativa, and he serves up a deeply immersive trip here. 'Inner Depths' is liquid deep techno in the mould of Neel or Donato Dozzy. Percolating rhythms and dubby undercurrents subsume mind and body while deft little details place you underwater. 'Bloodstone' is a little more lumpy with a gentle smattering of percussion of drums that bump. 'Ancient Apparition' is a spacious sound with wispy pads disappearing to infinity, glassy tinkles and undulating drums all getting you into a meditative state. The Patrick Russell Phantom remix is more warped and dark to add a nice counterpoint.

Dillon's 'Basho' is shaped on the mortar of a Japanese philosophical concept: conceived by Japanese philosopher Kitaro Nishida, basho describes a post-physical plane in which experiences and thoughts interconnect, dissolving subject-object distinctions. Dillon and Umezawa's music both resist fixity, reactivating the listener's attention by way electronic sounds stripped of origin. Umezawa's 'Still Forms', however, contrasts Dillon's firm-footed techno curtails with an entirely beatless piece, exploring the sonic potential of Baschet sound structures: experimental instruments developed in the 1950s by Bernard and Francois Baschet. Electroacoustic cognitions branch out like newly grown synapses on this fresh 12".

Review: There isn't much info out there about this new and super limited ambient excursion from Mystery Circles, which leaves us only with the music. It's a charming and organic world of sound with lingering trumpet notes stretched out to infinity over textural motifs and sustained chords that are both melancholic and tinged with danger. Sometimes it's abstract sound design like on 'Glass & Steel' that gets the attention, at others more sweeping and traditional ambient like on 'Sounds From Light, Still In Darkness', but either way, this one is seriously arresting.
