3 linear VCA's based on a discrete OTA core
Notes: The ADE-50 provides 3 all-analogue voltage controlled amplifiers based on a modern operational transconductance amplifier design.

The VCA's are designed to provide a good balance between the performance and specification of modern 'on-chip' VCA's and the character and musicality of classic analogue designs.

The OTA core of each VCA is fully discrete - it is built from only resistors, capacitors and transistors - however, the CV conditioning, audio input and output stages are built using high-quality op-amps giving the best balance between musicality, character and performance.

The ADE-50 provides a good signal-to-noise ratio, linearity, attenuation, an output level at unity gain at 5V CV input, minimal CV 'bleed' and minimal output offset/bias.

MiniMod Glide + Noise, combining two Minimoog circuits in one module - 6HP
Notes: The original MiniMod Glide +Noise module was based exactly on the original Minimoog Model D circuitry, which was designed to be used with the built in Model D keyboard, and because of its vintage design its range was severely limited to 5 or 6 octaves, and it also responded to positive voltages only. Another limitation was that it would not return fully to zero when selecting long glide times, which restricted the range even more.

So we made the decision to re-design the MiniMod Glide + Noise using modern precision parts, and we have come up with an all new circuit which has exactly the same function, but with a hugely extended range. It has the same Glide slope characteristic (a slightly curved Linear Glide) as the Model D on which the MiniMod is based, however in response to many requests from customers we have adjusted the glide up and down speeds so that they are now very similar , which is much more useful in real world applications that the earlier MK1 version which (like the Model D) would glide up considerably faster than it would glide down.

The new Mk2 MiniMod Glide Noise module now has an impressive 14 octave range, and can respond to negative voltages down to -5V. This is a very useful feature, as our MiniMod VCO's will respond to negative control voltages and produce correspondingly low frequencies; so it is now possible to glide down quickly or slowly to crazy sub bass levels! The hold feature has been improved too, it covers the full audio range as well as DC control voltages, and works as a track and hold module with Eurorack signal levels.

A further enhancement is that the Mk2 module can now (using selectable jumpers) transmit or receive pitch CV to the Eurorack power bus; for example, the Glide CV Output can now be directed to the Bus in order to send CV's to (for example) three VCO's via the bus without the need for a passive multi and four patch cords!

The Noise section of the module is unchanged, except that we have slightly boosted the level of the Red Noise output to bring it more in line with Eurorack control voltage levels.

Lastly, it is much shallower - Mk1 Glide Noise had a depth of 54mm, and it was the only MiniMod module that was too deep to fit a skiff style case - and this prevented a full MiniMod system being installed into a shallow Eurorack case. The new MK2 version is only 28mm deep, so this allows both it and a full MiniMod system to be mounted into shallow skiff style Eurorack cases.

Eurorack recreation of classic sampler filter with added resonance & voltage control
Notes: 'MUM M8' is an 8hp Eurorack low pass filter building on the filter design used in the classic Akai S950 12 bit sampler with the addition of resonance, voltage control, clipped saturation and a dedicated VCA.

The low pass filter gives the recognisable super smooth vacuum like tone sucking sound which works magic on complex sources. The addition of clipped overdrive and intentionally aggressive self-oscillating resonance compliment the smooth filter core by juxtaposing it into more wasp like territory with acidic squeals and a more gritty sound.
Mum M8 features dual voltage control with attenuation (and inversion) of filter cut off and voltage control of resonance together with dual audio inputs - one of which includes a VCA to with the capability to aid overdriving signals into the filter core.

The filter core is a 6th Order Butterworth switched capacitor type design featuring an analog core but controlled by a high speed digital clock. This produces the characteristic smooth sounding filter but, as with the original S950, has a relatively high minimum cut off as to avoid 'clock bleed' into the filter output from the digital control. This minimum cut of point (and introduction of bleed if required) can be controlled via trimmers on the rear of the module (see calibration chapter). It is not unusual for there still to be some low-level artefacts from the clock present, particularly during filter sweeps - these add to the filters character.

The motivation for the module came from discussing filters in classic samplers with the artist Jack Adams - aka Mumdance. Jack suggested investigating the S950's filter well known as for it use in classic use in early jungle and hardcore. From that point onward Jack provided inspiration, help and feedback in the development of the filter. Big up Mumdance.

Gritty sounding delay effect with open feedback path - 10HP
Notes: The Coma Reactor module from Animal Factory Amplification is an innovative delay with a variety of sonic possibilities.

It is based on a PT2399 delay chip and offers amazing routing and sound design options.

The Coma knob is an attenuator for the input signal. Low levels can generate funny noises. The input signal is mirrored at the Thru output, for further processing with another module.

There are separate dry and wet potentiometers to adjust the desired effect amount.

The delay time ranges from 30 to 2000 ms. It can be controlled manually via the Time knob or with control voltage thanks to the MOD input, which is equipped with an attenuverter and a switch for setting the amount of modulation. Furthermore there is a LED which indicates the CV polarity.

The delay features a feedback knob for controlling the repeats. Turned fully clockwise it will bring up self-oscillation.

Thanks to an integrated send/return path it is possible to use the module with external effects. The volume of the external effect is controlled by the Return potentiometer. If nothing is connected to send/return, the delay signal is routed internally through a crude twin-T Bandpass Filter. The effected signal can be fed back into the delay circuit thanks to a dedicated Return Feedback knob.

Notes: Timber is very flexible wave shaping module that can produce rich timbres by adding harmonics to simple waveforms (triangles and sinewaves) or any other signal. It has 2 different unique wave shaping circuits - I. - the WAVE DRIVER and II. -the WAVE FOLDER and voltage-controlled crossfader to fade between the different circuits or between one of them and the clean input signal.

Both circuits share the same control voltages: the SHAPE which sets the input amplification before the wave shaping circuit and the SYMMETRY control which adds voltage offset to the input signal to provide various asymmetric overdrives or wave folding sounds. It has a configuration switch which can either activate clean 4 stage wavefolding in the OK position or highly asymmetric folding stage in the KO position that provides strange metallic character. The NO position provides only the very last overdrive-folding stage.

The envelope amount for all four filters is controlled by the FM knob and the CVFM input by means of four built-in VCAs, which are controlled by the FM control and CVFM input. This allows also voltage control of the envelope amounts.

In addition common frequency modulation for all filters is possible (e.g. by an LFO). For this the CVF input with attenuator can be used. The range of the audio input level control (L) allows also clipping/distortion with typical A-100 audio levels
(e.g. from A-111-4) at the filter inputs. Even this parameter is voltage controllable as well as the resonance (Q).
Application: polyphonic patches (four VCFs with same parameters).

- Bal.: manual balance control, fully CCW the internal VCO is used, fully CW the external signal (Ext.In) is used, at centre position both signals have about the same level

- Ext. In: external audio input for VCA2, about 5 Vpp level required for similar loudness as the internal VCO

- ~ 11 octaves frequency range (~ 10 Hz ... 20kHz)

VCA:

- Gain: manual amplitude control (initial gain), can be used to open the VCA without envelope signal
- VCA (switch): used to switch between gate and envelope as control signal for the VCA, in centre position the VCA is not controlled by envelope or gate
- Note: when gate is used the VCA is controlled directly by the gate signal (i.e. hard on/off), this may lead to clicking noise under certain conditions (especially with low VCO/VCF frequencies)
- Special control scale: exponential scale in the range from about -20dB to -80/90dB, linear scale from about -20dB to 0dB
- Remark: this special control scale results in a loudness behaviour that is a bit different from pure linear or exponential VCAs
- Out: audio output of the module (= VCA output)

Envelope:

- Gate (socket): Gate input (min. +5V), can be normalled to the bus gate signal by means of a jumper
- Att: manual control for Attack
- D/R: manual control for Decay/Release
- Env. (switch): used to switch between A/D, ADSR and A/R mode of the envelope generator, in centre position (ADSR) the sustain level is fixed to about 50%

Octal VCA module containing four VCA pairs - 8HP
Notes: A-132-8 is an octal VCA and primarily planned for polyphonic applications. The module contains four VCA pairs. Each pair includes two daisy-chained VCAs. One VCA has a linear control scale, for the second VCA linear or exponential control scale can be chosen by means of jumpers. We decided to provide two VCAs for each voice because usually one VCA is required for loudness envelope and a second one for velocity (or other functions like individual voltage-controlled loudness of each voice, amplitude modulation and so on).

These controls and in/outputs are available:

- Default Gain 1 (GL)
- Default Gain 2 (GX)
- CV Input VCA 1
- CV Input VCA 2
- Audio Input
- Audio Output

In addition, an Audio Sum Output is also available.

The module features two Default Gain controls (GL, GX), that enable the opening of the first VCAs (L) and/or second VCAs (X). For this the controls GL and GX generate two internal control voltages 0...+10V which are connected to the switching contacts of the sockets 1L...4L (control GL) and 1X...4X (control GX). As long as no patch cable is inserted into the socket in question the internal default control voltage (GL or GX) is used to control the corresponding VCA. This is necessary when the VCA in question is not in use (i.e. no external CV available). Otherwise the VCA would close and there would be no output signal even if the other VCA in the chain is open. The controls GL and GX are also useful for testing polyphonic patches (e.g. for tuning the VCOs).

In the factory the CV inputs are adjusted for a CV range 0...+10V - matching to the polyphonic ADSR module A-141-4. But the sensitivity of each CV input can be adjusted by means of a trimming potentiometer to adapt the CVs even to other control voltage ranges.

By means of internal jumpers one can select which time parameters are controlled by the CVT input (e.g. D only or D+R or A+D+R) and in which direction (i.e. if an increasing CVT shortens or stretches the time parameter in question).

Socket CVT can be normalled to an internal fixed voltage (i.e. the switching contact is connected to an internal fixed voltage). That way it's possible to change all time parameters simultaneously by means of the CVT control.

Another jumper is used to set output 2 to normal or inverted envelope.

And another jumper is used for the normalling of Gate 2 to Gate 1 (i.e. ADSR#2 is also triggered by Gate 1).

Two more jumpers are used for the optional bus access to the gate signal of the bus for each ADSR.

Quad AD-generator with four independent Attack-Decay envelopes - 28HP
Notes: Module A-143-1 is a complex envelope generator that consists of Attack/Decay generators. For the complex envelope generator the four units are daisy-chained, i.e. the preceding unit triggers the following unit. Details: Module A-143-1 contains four separate attack/decay type envelope generators. Each unit can be switched into a free running mode (LFO mode). The LFO mode differs in several points from a regular LFO (like A-145, A-146 or A-147): The slopes are exponential - in contrast to linear slopes of a normal LFO, and the frequency is defined by both controls. The attack control defines the time of the rising slope, the decay control the falling slope.

Each unit has available a comparator that compares the AD output voltage with a manually adjustable threshold and switches the corresponding comparator output (Cp 1...4) to "high" as soon as the AD output voltage goes in the decay phase below this value. The comparator output is normalled to the trigger input of the next stage via the switching contact of the trigger input socket. Consequently the first unit triggers the second, the second triggers the third and so on.

Each AD generator is equipped with a Polarizer (look at the Voltage Controlled Polarizer A-133 concerning details about the polarizer function) and a mixer that adds up all polarizer outputs. This allows to add up all AD/LFO output signals inverting or non-inverting with adjustable level to the mix output. Additionally a single output (Env 1...4) is available for each unit.

If the trigger input of unit 1 is controlled by a normal gate signal (e.g. from a keyboard resp. MIDI-to-CV/Gate interface) one obtains a very complex envelope signal at the mix output. The signal contains 8 segments controlled by Attack 1, Decay 1, Attack 2, Decay 2, Attack 3, Decay 3, Attack 4 and Decay 4. The transition between the stages (i.e. when the following AD generator is triggered) is controlled by threshold knob. The positive or negative contribution of each unit to the mix signal is adjusted with the Mixing Polarizer control. If the trigger input of unit 1 is controlled by the comparator output of unit 4 one obtains a 8 stage LFO.

The single AD outputs can be used to control VCAs or VCFs that open one after another corresponding to the AD signals (a little bit similar to the Shepard generator A-191).

The default-connection between the four units (CPn = Trig.n+1) can be interrupted by patching cables into the trigger inputs. Consequently the four units can be used as separate AD generators or LFOs. In any case the mix signal is available (e.g. mix of four AD generators or LFOs with adjustable level and sign).

In the LFO mode the comparator output serves as LFO rectangle output with adjustable pulse width (= threshold control).

Each unit is equipped with a separate LED display for envelop and comparator output. The shortest attack/decay time is about 5 ms, the longest attack/decay times are about 3 seconds (attack) / 10 seconds (decay). By changing the value of a capacitor the shortest time can be modified (details can be found here: A100_Capacitors.htm).

The sketch at the bottom of the page shows the module principle with 4 daisy-chained AD units (as predetermined by the normalled sockets), that are mixed with the integrated polarizing mixer.

If the running mode "CV Controlled Step Address" is selected the First Step section is used to determine the active sequencer step. Consequently manual and voltage controlled selection (with attenuator) of the active step is possible: the active step can be set by hand with the first step manual control and then modulated by an external control voltage (e.g. LFO, Random, S&H, Theremin, Light CV source, Joy Stick) at the first step CV input (with attenuator).

An internal voltage controlled clock generator with manual and CV control (with attenuator) is available. The output of the clock generator is displayed with a LED and is used as sequencer clock provided that no external clock signal is connected to the Clock In socket (normalled socket). If the CV input of the Clock section is connected to one of the analogue outputs of the sequencer the time for each step can be set separately. Even jumps (or skipping) will be possible as we will introduce the feature that a very short clock pulse will be generated if the control voltage exceeds a certain value. For example the gate row of the A-155 can be used to obtain skipping of steps: the gate output simply has to be connected to the CV input of the A-154 clock generator. If the corresponding switch of the A-155 is set correspondingly in the gate row the step will be skipped.

Manual and voltage controlled (with attenuator) pulse width (PW) of the clock signal. This features can be used to obtain a different gate length for each step: e.g. one of the CV outputs of the A-155 can be used to control the PW. With a PW control voltage coming from a LFO/random/S&H the gate length will change automatically. CV coming from Theremin A-178, ribbon controller A-198, light controlled CV A-179, joy stick A-174 are other ways to control the gate length.

8/16 step mode: A toggle switch us used to select 8 or 16 steps. The "16 step" mode requires two A-155 and one or more voltage controlled switches (e.g. A-150-1 or A-150-8). The voltage controlled switches are controlled by the "A3" output of the A-154. This output remains "low" as long as the active step is in the range 1...8 and turns to "high" in the range 9...16. The voltage controlled switches are used to switch between the CV/trigger/gates outputs of the first A-155 (step 1...8) and the second A-155 (step 9...16). In the A-154 user's manual the corresponding patch is shown.

If two A-155 are used they can work in parallel (8 steps) or serial (16 steps). The 8/16 steps switch determines if the 8 step mode (one A-155 or two A-155 in parallel) or the 16 step mode (two A-155 serial) is chosen. Both modes work with CV controlled step addressing too (see below). In 8 step mode only the steps 1...8 are addressed, in 16 step mode the steps 1...16. For serial operation an additional VC switch (A-150) is required - as mentioned above.

Notes: A-190-4 is the replacement for module A-190-1 which is no longer available. The functions of A-190-1 and A-190-4 are nearly the same (Midi In, Midi Out, CV1, CV2, Gate, Clock, Reset). But the operation of the A-190-4 has been improved because a 3-digit LED display is available. The current values of all parameters (like Midi channel, reference note, clock divider) can be read back and modified by means of up/down buttons. In addition, A-190-4 is equipped with an USB interface and the external +5V supply is no longer available. Consequently, the additional charges for the 5V adapter fall away.

The module width is the same for A-190-1 and A-190-4. In the A-100 basic systems the A-190-1 will be replaced by the A-190-4 from about May 2014.

Important notes:

- The Scale (SCA) and Tune (TUn) parameters remain unchanged when the module is initialized! Otherwise the initialization would overwrite the adjusted values. Because of the tolerances of electrical parts there are no fixed values for SCA and TUn which are valid for all modules. The values for SCA and TUn differ a bit from module to module because of the tolerances of electrical parts. In case that the module has been adjusted totally wrong: typical values are 100 for SCA (coarse) and 55 for TUn (coarse).

- The module comes with installed bus jumpers for CV and Gate. One has to remove the jumpers if e.g. an A-164, A-190-1, A-190-2, A-190-3, A-185-1 or A-185-2 is already connected to the CV and/or gate lines of the same bus board! If the A-190-3 should be used as CV and gate source for the A-100 bus the CV and gate connections of other CV/gate sources to the A-100 bus have to be removed. Otherwise short circuits are made between the outputs of the CV or gate transmitters!

- The gate level of the A-190-3 can be changed from +5V to +12V. For this the jumper on JP10A (behind the CV Note socket, labelled "GATE 5V JP10A") has to be removed and installed to JP10B (behind the 16 pin bus connector, labelled "GATE 12V JP10B").

- The module is a USB device or slave in USB mode. It has no USB host function (like computers or laptops with type A USB connectors).

Another nice feature of the Memory Joystick: The orientation can be varied by 180 degrees! This way, you can decide whether you want the buttons and jacks on the top or bottom of the module. When using the module upside-down, there is a nice little trick: Push a little switch on the back of the module to invert the X & Y outputs and also shift the starting position of the sequencer by four steps.

Updated version of the State 700 module - 10HP
Notes: State 700 Mk2 is an update of this popular module. The Mk2 is the same size as the Mk1, at 10HP wide, but features additional audio and CV inputs, both with their own attenuators. Based on the Roland System 700 state variable filter module, State 700 provides lowpass, bandpass and highpass outputs simultaneously. The Mk2 features upgraded outputs from the original module, keeping signals more in line with Eurorack output levels. A big part of the sound of the State 700 is the way in which resonance is reduced as the audio inputs are driven harder. It won't self oscillate with a hot audio input, throttle back a little and you'll get squelchy ear bleeding resonances!

Eurorack filter synth module based on Roland System 100M VCF - 10HP wide
Notes: Frequency Central "System X Filter"

Frequency Central proudly announce the release of the 'System X Filter'. It's a clone of the Roland System 100M VCF, and uses 2 x LM13700. There's an additional 12dB/oct output which is 180 degrees out of phase with the 24dB/oct output. Mixing the two outputs will give bandpass.

Usage instructions:
First up, classic 24dB/oct LPF. The two VCOs are my Hearn Morley HMVCO1c, there is a little -1oct subosc added as FM of the VCF towards the end of the clip:

The Frequency Central Wave Runner LFO is a 5U format low frequency oscillator with 8 waveforms and a range of sync and skewing options.

Wave Runner includes 8 waveforms that include saw, ramp, pulse, triangle, sine, noise, sample and hold and a selection of stepped options, for less blase modulation results. The modules frequency range is ridiculously wide range, going from 0.025Hz all the way into 50Hz audio range.

The module also includes an onboard distortion circuit which lets you bend and mangle the waveform to create less linear and more unpredictable modulations and sounds. This distortion section lets you effectively crush the waveforms and create new voltages.

ARP 4023 VCF clone
Notes: Frequency Central's Whiteface is a new voltage controlled analogue filter for Eurorack based on the ARP 4023 filter, found in the "whiteface" Odyssey MK1 Synthesiser.

Besides the classic cut-off & resonance controls, it comes with two audio inputs as well as two CV inputs.

The rare parts have been engineered out (and the need for matched transistors for the CV input section) by using a Roland style circuit there instead - no change to the vibe though! The audio path remains pure ARP, with one exception. Built stock from the schematic, the resonance would clip above 3 o'clock, in a way which is neither musical or desirable. An inverting buffer has now been used, which adds a bit of gain to bring it up to modular levels. A nice side effect of the inverting buffer is that if you mix the input signal with the filter output, and find the sweet spot, you can do high-pass filtering too!

Eurorack module based around The Gristleizer
Notes: The Gristleizer Filter presents one of the key components of the Gristleizer in a Eurorack module - its JFET-controlled multi-feedback band-pass filter. Its characteristics are not unlike a wah-wah pedal, whilst also being able to create other vocal tonalities, especially with several summed in parallel. Whilst originally controlled by the Gristleizer's oscillator, the TG3 can be controlled by any control source available in a Eurorack system.

As well as a couple of Frequency control inputs, the TG3 also adds Register and Resonance controls to the original filter circuit. The Register control shifts the resonant frequency of the filter core itself, whereas the Frequency control affects the gating of the filter's JFET. The Resonance control allows the circuit to self-oscillate easily, allowing for the TG3 to be used as a sound source as well as a filter. The TG3 also incorporates a Drive parameter (with final clipping circuitry added for taming the filter core) as well as an output Level control.

Eurorack module based around The Gristleizer
Notes: The Gristleizer Modulator presents another key component of the Gristleizer in a Eurorack module - its JFET-controlled voltage-controlled amplifier. Whilst originally controlled by the Gristleizer's oscillator to achieve tremolo (or amplitude modulation) effects, the TG4 can be controlled by any control source available in a Eurorack system and, therefore, be used as a conventional VCA with some added features.

The Bias control sets the initial control point of the amplitude modulation, whilst a control voltage attenu-verter for CV2 allows for full control over how the amplitude is modulated. On top of this, the TG4 features a Dirt control, which allows the user to alter the behaviour of the JFET stage. At zero Dirt, the Modulator offers a super-clean VCA, whilst at maximum Dirt, waveforms become drastically mutated, at times beyond recognition. With the Dirt setting at 12 o'clock, the Modulator behaves exactly like the original VCA circuit of the Guitar Effects Pedal design. Also note that the JFET tends to exhibit second-harmonic distortion, similar to that of vacuum-tube amplifiers. Therefore, the TG4 presents not just a VCA, but also a module for adding distortion and character to audio signals.
