On the edgier sounding flip, meanwhile, a female MC spits with impressive ferocity while a lovely warm - and somewhat familiar - analogue-edge loop works its magic. Both are key components for use at different points in the jam, some badly needed heavy weaponry that Donald Trump can't withdraw from service here.

Review: A timeless sample transmission is documented on this latest reissue from From The Voltz, a label whose 7" works specialise in such historicisms. In this case, we've the 1991 single 'They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)' by Pete Rock and CL Smooth, a mythical hip-hop duo from Mount Vernon, New York, whose foundational work in the East Coast rap and DJing scene enabled many later developments. With Rock especially often grouped among the best and most esteemed of rap producers alongside Premier and RZA, 'T.R.O.Y.' is emblematic of the era's distinctive jazz-hop breezes. In turn, the track sampled 'When She Made Me Promise', a relatively obscure Nassau funk group formed in 1969; the sample can be instantly clocked, save for its shrewd pitching down by a tone or two.

Review: Mushi 45 prompt a history lesson: Hailing from Paris in the early 70s, Lafayette Afro Rock Band forged a fusion of American funk and West African rhythms, producing grooves that stuck like thumbtacks through later genera such as hip-hop and electronica. Their track 'Darkest Light' stands out for its piercing, mussitating bari sax riff, famously looped on Jay-Z's 'Show Me What You Got'. Another essential cut, 'Deep Gully', delivers sharp guitar stabs over a crisp drum break, also a backbone for numerous hip-hop and jungle tracks. The group's sessions at Pierre Jaubert's Parisound studio yielded records like Soul Makossa and Malik, both cult classics rich in percussion and horn work.

Review: The Magic Wand label casts another of its sonic spells with an anonymous artist at the helm. It's a knowing blend of many different influences all subtly distilled into a low-key classic. There are elements of yacht rock, Balearic, dub, funk and soul all to be found here. The bassline of 'Crossfire' is slight but funky, the drums sit low in the mix but soon sweep you away on a gentle breeze at sundown and the vocals are effortlessly cool and carefree but really cut through with a quiet charm. This bit of disco sorcery is a one-sided gem that is never going to leave your bag.

This fourth instalment in the Discolifting series kicks off with 'Zulu', a nice fat-bottomed and dubby Afro disco sound with a super sweet vocal and some funky guitar riffs. 'Instrumental' then steps out with more widescreen synths and snappy low ends with more than a hint of 'Bakerman' groove goodness. 'See The Light' is lavish and bright disco with 80s synths and 'Heaven' closes with a more subdued and introspective sound.

Review: Perth, Australia-based collective Dancing In Space have been running their offshoot edit imprint since 2018, though previously they'd only released two - admittedly excellent - EPs. This third volume in the series, delivered four years after its predecessor, is therefore long overdue. As usual, they're scrabbling around in dollar bins for overlooked gold, offering up reworks of largely overlooked and under-celebrated gems. Check first the infectious, cowbell-enhanced disco drums and joyous Philly Soul orchestration of 'Alright Tonight', before moving on to the Soundstream style, loop-powered disco-house weight of 'Feel So Good'. Arguably best of all though is the low-slung, dub disco-propelled weight of piano-sporting B-side opener 'Holdin' Back', whose punchy horns, sinewy strings and heady groove usher in another eyes-closed, Philadelphia International style male lead vocal.

Review: Wax Digits hits release number five with a tight and tidy two-tracker from the late veteran Robert Ouimet who passed a couple of years ago. Before then he cooked up these gems with his pal and production partner Dave Godin. They are being released as a tribute to the memory of Ouimet and a fine one they are too. 'Plenty' has a raw groove and big chords with jangling guitars adding hints of melancholy that counter the big stabs. Soulful vocals are a great finishing touch then 'Funky Together' is more loose and strident with big horns leading the way under psyched-out chords. Two quality party starters.

Review: Earl Jeffers is no stranger to crafting effective, big-hearted sounds. He's got plenty of them dropping in the early part of 2025 too, and all of them are slightly different but equally effective. This latest drop on the Melange Archives label was originally released back in 2013 and starts with 'Monster (feat Kofi Tarris)' which is raw-as-you-like house music at a slow and steady pace but with such energy in the chords and funky guitars that it will blow up any club. 'Thunder & Lightning (feat TOG)' lands a little more heavy. There is garage swing in the drums and plenty of expression in the vocal stabs. Two bombs, for sure.

With the duo's 60th anniversary approaching and both legends still active, the timing couldn't be better for Love Train: The Songs Of Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff. This compilation zeroes in on the first decade of their partnership, packing as many signature tunes as a single CD allows. Instead of sticking solely to Philadelphia International classics, it broadens the scope with versions that highlight the enduring versatility of their work. Along with staples from the O'Jays, Lou Rawls and Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, the set features takes from Dusty Springfield, The Supremes, Dobie Gray, Gladys Knight & The Pips and even Elvis Presley. Review: The 2024 Soulport Records debut by debutant German soul band Miles King & The Foolish Knights sees an insta-reissue through Breakbeat Paradise; they've laid down a club night-errant remix version on the B to replace the original 7"'s 'Hurt So Bad'. Label regular Jayl Funk has underlain extra elasticity and bounce neath this otherwise guardian angelic soul cut, switching the pace to late-night mode with tighter breaks and a sharper kick, built for spinning, not sipping. This is Vol. 19 in the Toxic Funk series, and it keeps the formula simple: feel-good tunes, finely played, and pressed up loud.

Review: Take It Easy! We need more taglines like these in such trying and self-recriminatory times, where the stresses of a part-imagined urgency prevent us from decompressing in the way our social lives really should allow for. But is dance music, whose traditional motto is to "jack", compatible with such a mantra? DJLMP shatters these apparent antinomies of relaxation and danceability with three new edited heaters here, designed for triumphant joie de vives of the kind that do not poke, prod or demand too much from us. A later Diana Ross sample is put on heavy opening rotation on 'Diana's Loop', while similarly echoic verboffs are exchanged on 'Spring Touch', where dub delays haze the mix into something a little more convulsive. Space for wonky downtime is reserved on the B's 'Reggatronic', in a rare case of hip, lo-fi breathing room reserved for a dance record.

Review: The second salvo in Chinotto Records ongoing Tarocco Singles Club series offers a label debut from rising star Redance, a New Orleans-based producer who has previously released must-check music on Nervous, Major and Get Up Recordings. Redance's love of infectious rhythms, dark-room sonics, deep chords, weighty bass and cut-up vocal snippets comes to the fore on drowsy and heady A-side 'Faded'. He layers up the percussion further, reaching for cowbells, timbales and powerful kick-drums on the Tenaglia-goes-dreamy flex of 'Cookies', which recalls some of the more melodious and atmospheric productions of Miami heroes Murk.
