Even After All (SuckaSide remix)
Gorilla Witness
Review: A nice mix of funk, hip-hop and reggae influences go into the melting pot on the latest SuckaSide, with 'Even After All' proving to be a laid back, blunted jam that's backed up with some hard hitting, sturdy beat manouevres. On the edgier sounding flip, meanwhile, a female MC spits with impressive ferocity while a lovely warm - and somewhat familiar - analogue-edge loop works its magic. Both are key components for use at different points in the jam, some badly needed heavy weaponry that Donald Trump can't withdraw from service here.

Be Thankful For What You Got (instrumental)
Review: Sunsay & The Soul Surfers' cover of William DeVaughn's 'Be Thankful For What You Got' is a smooth and classy rendition of the 1974 original. The funk and soul influences are evident in the laid-back groove and sultry vocals, creating a timeless and sophisticated sound. With Massive Attack's 1991 cover also gaining recognition, this song has become a staple in the genres of funk and soul. The 7' vinyl reissue from 2024 remains faithful to the original release, capturing the essence of the track in its entirety. The B-side features the instrumental version, providing musicians and DJs with a versatile tool for sampling and remixing. 'Be Thankful For What You Got' serves as a reminder to appreciate the things we have, both big and small, and to find contentment in the present moment.

Funky Soul Brother (FSB demo version)
Review: When it comes to new funk, it doesn't get much raunchier or weird than this. Packed with rhythmic rodomontade, DJ Koco Shimokit and Southpaw Chop - both from Japan - bring an adroit right and sinister left hand respectively to the art of vinyl flipping and sampling, staying true to the rule of primary sourcing: "always sample straight from the original wax." Though it's a moot point as to whether sample mileage should be legitimated as a concept in the same sense as food mileage is, we can see and hear the appeal, as this loopy chef-d'œuvre hears its samples chopped and braised to the crispest degree, sating even the most dulled of tastebuds, and letting no indelicacy past the noise gates. Side B offers a special treat for heads too: the demo version of the pair's debut single, 'Funky Soul Brother'.

The Beginning Of The End - "When She Made Me Promise"
Review: A timeless sample transmission is documented on this latest reissue from From The Voltz, a label whose 7" works specialise in such historicisms. In this case, we've the 1991 single 'They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)' by Pete Rock and CL Smooth, a mythical hip-hop duo from Mount Vernon, New York, whose foundational work in the East Coast rap and DJing scene enabled many later developments. With Rock especially often grouped among the best and most esteemed of rap producers alongside Premier and RZA, 'T.R.O.Y.' is emblematic of the era's distinctive jazz-hop breezes. In turn, the track sampled 'When She Made Me Promise', a relatively obscure Nassau funk group formed in 1969; the sample can be instantly clocked, save for its shrewd pitching down by a tone or two.

Review: A rare and new dose of lightness in master-at-work Kenny Dope's otherwise breaks-massive catalogue, as he's heard teaming up with Daniel Rojo for 'Que Se Sepa Pt. 1 & 2', a two-part single on his own Kay-Dee Records. Pulsing with Latin breaks vigour, the tune draws inspo from Roberto Roena's classic cover, fat-stacking tropical percs and pipping beats. Unobvious salsa vibes extend over the otherwise minimal beats as if by insinuation, while Daniel Rojo's vocals down anchor on said set of otherwise free-floating beats. Another wicked one from Kay-Dee, continuing his/its its tradition of spotlighting Latin-infused sounds.

Review: Tight, punchy hip-hop beats with smooth r&b elements, creating a seamless flow throughout this tribute to New York hip-hop DJ Clark Kent, who tragically passed away late last year. Tracks like 'Back At It' showcase Kent's sharp lyricism, while 'Soul Rewind' reinvents a classic r&b groove with his signature style. The production is crisp, but it's Kent's ability to switch between laid-back verses and pointed delivery that makes this release stand out - and his passing a great loss.

Review: The PS7 label continues to impress a year after first launching with more soul-drenched sounds and lazy grooves. P Sol is again the NYC beat maker behind this 7" which kicks off with the deep, laid back swing of 'Trust'. A range of vocals, from backing tunes to r&b females and smoky males, all coalesce around a most organic groove with hooky pads. 'Harlem World (7" edit)' then has even more of a noodling funk bassline and deconstructed, slow motion groove full of hip-hop style conscious lyrics and serene string sweeps. Two real heart warmers which will likely sell out, just like all previous releases.

First up, they also call on Mr. And-7 to get involved on 'La Malanga 25', a sunny funk jam with raw horns that bring a Mexican twist to the percussive drums and lively pianos. Review: A jazz head with deep hip-hop roots, New York-based saxophonist Benny Reid returns with a brand-new 7" on Fat Beats, following his 2023 The Infamous Live reinterpretation. This is his latest standalone tribute, and it plays like a deliberate two-sided concept: '93 'Til Infinity' on the A, 'Day One' on the B i reworked with full reverence but plenty of vision. Reid's take on the former is all patience and atmosphere, stretching the groove into moody, modal territory without losing its swing. Flip it for a tighter, chunkier pass at the D.I.T.C. classic, where arrangements lean into low-end murk and sharper rhythmic interplay. Drawing on years of post-bop work for Concord, Reid reanimates sample culture as memory, process and momentum.

Review: Mushi 45 prompt a history lesson: Hailing from Paris in the early 70s, Lafayette Afro Rock Band forged a fusion of American funk and West African rhythms, producing grooves that stuck like thumbtacks through later genera such as hip-hop and electronica. Their track 'Darkest Light' stands out for its piercing, mussitating bari sax riff, famously looped on Jay-Z's 'Show Me What You Got'. Another essential cut, 'Deep Gully', delivers sharp guitar stabs over a crisp drum break, also a backbone for numerous hip-hop and jungle tracks. The group's sessions at Pierre Jaubert's Parisound studio yielded records like Soul Makossa and Malik, both cult classics rich in percussion and horn work.

Surprisingly, 'You Came Thru' was not one of them, and is yet another new single to be issued for the first time via Cannonball, after renewed interest in the band came about sometime in the late 2010s. 'You Came Thru' is a slick and uptempo expression of gratitude for love, while the bundled-in 'Hurry Up Tomorrow' is a comparatively slow and sweet, yet no less tight, paean to the a golden era of love.

Review: In 1979, the Washington-based Janice Lakers Quintet recorded this fetching demo, beloved for its formal attending to the joy of making music together. With Lakers on vocals, Dick Cady on piano, Mike Edwards on woodwinds, Larry Turner on bass and Fred Taylor on drums, the group delivered two unique covers, each worked into their own signature style. Their take on Seawind's 'He Loves You' strips back the funk, replacing it with a light, effortless glide. Taylor's whisking drums and Turner's steady bassline lay an airy foundation, while Edwards' clarinet and Cady's piano inject bursts of energy mid-song. On the flip, 'Shaker Song' bridges Spyro Gyra's instrumental and Manhattan Transfer's later vocal version; richer in texture, it offered Lakers a chance to explore her vocal range, closing with lively scatting.

There are elements of yacht rock, Balearic, dub, funk and soul all to be found here. 'Back to Cali (Goce's Pop Lock Edit)' takes the swagger of LL Cool J's original and shatters it with rapid-fire Brooklyn rhythms and experimental tension. It's a rework that hits hard, adding a sense of narrative chaos to the track's laid-back vibe. Over on the B-side, Goce transforms Wu-Tang's 'Gravel Pit' into a dirty, kinetic force. Review: A rare, reissued addition to the E-Lustrious repertoire of ragga jungle comes released through Megablast Recordings, a new imprint and possible splinter sect of one M.O.S. Records, who were in turn once thought to be a Ministry Of Sound offshoot (but weren't), and were in fact a real-deal pusher of proper ragga foundation musics during the early 90s. 'On The Ragga Tip' obviously takes its name from the SL2 song of a very similar name released a year earlier; the cultural impact of the song is illumined as clearly as day here, with MC Shine shining brightly over a tune that otherwise sounds nothing like the SL2 bit. Instrumentally, the infamous hardcore "vamp" sound is heard as clearly as day here and a halfstep breakbeat is cleverly sequenced to faint reggaesque effect. The proverbial Ragga Tip is not a flimsy felt tip, but a sturdy iceberg, whose subsurface history is much bigger than it would seem when seen above water.

Review: Germany's Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band's profile skyrocketed in 2024 when their hypnotic steel pan cover of 50 Cent's 'Pimp' became a surprise emotional core in the Oscar-winner Anatomy Of A Fall. So pivotal was the track that steel pans would here make their first ever Academy Awards orchestra debut. But for longtime heads, 'Pimp' first turned heads in 2008, where it was pressed on Bjorn Wagner's Mocambo label and was often mistaken afterwards for a 50s sample source. The 'Big Crown Vaults' series now swoops in to save and preserve the group's best contributions to the music world, in addition to and in excess of the 'Pimp' version. A true archive-delving if we've ever heard one, the tracks so preserved include Bob James' breakbeat classic 'Nautilus' and a thunderous take on Khruangbin's 'Maria Tambien'. Then there's the B's funked-up flips of the Jackson 5 and Billy Jones, plus one original, 'Kaiso Noir'.

Ode To Native Tongues
Everything's For Sale (Gotta Get It)
Review: A standout blend of vintage hip-hop, capturing the essence of early 90s sound. Side-1 features 'Ode To Native Tongues', a tribute to the influential Native Tongues collective, packed with classic samples, scratching and a nostalgic vibe that celebrates the golden era of hip-hop. Side-2 presents a tribal groove-driven track with sharp, insightful lyrics. It's a true hip-hop underground gem, with a rhythmic flow that stands out as both thought-provoking and danceable. This 45 is an essential weapon for DJs and fans of 90s hip-hop who appreciate its deeper cuts and hidden treasures.

Review: Incredible psychic G-funk and hip-hop renditions from Rick Rhymes and Red Hot Hancock, both of whom are debuting "artists" for the equally-as-exclusive Dope Music On Vinyl crew. Lifting a key verse from Busta Rhymes' 'Woo-Hah! Got You All In Check', Rick Rhymes' flip 'Mary's Woo Hah!' brings x-treme, swirling psycho-funk to an aggressive vocal register and flow from the original Rhymes cut, providing an impressive but unlikely contrast. 'Stars In Your Yes Yes' by Hancock, meanwhile, flips over the sandtimer for a retroistic Texan funk rap swatch, sampling Red Hot Lover Tone's 'Yes, Yes' to supreme effect.

Review: Toronto-based label Icons Of Hip Hop follow up their inaugural 7" with a heavy second drop, pairing two titans of rap over an unmistakable 70s soul loop. The A-side delivers a vocal-led version that marries sharp bars with dusty horn chops and a butter-smooth rhythm section, channelling the crate-digging spirit of golden era production with modern flair. Flip it for the 'Touch The Sky' Funky Soul Instrumental Edit, where the sample's full groove comes into focusigritty drums, warm basslines and shimmering soul textures that nod to the track's roots while inviting DJs to get playful. Limited, hand-stamped and pressed on dinked 45s, this is essential heat for anyone still chasing that raw, loop-driven magic.

Review: Dynamite Cuts continue their hot streak of essential 7" reissues with two soulful gems from North Carolina-born soul legend Johnny Bristol. Best known for his silky vocal style and smooth songwriting, Bristol's original recording of 'I Wouldn't Change A Thing' is presented here in all its lush, upbeat gloryia joyous rare-groove dancer that later found fame through Coke Escovedo's version. The flip, 'Lusty Lady', slows the tempo slightly, opening with a crisp drum-break before unfolding into a seductive mid-tempo groove, complete with lush strings and understated funkiness. Both tracks showcase Bristol's soulful delivery and production finesse, making this 7" an essential reissue for collectors and DJs alike.

This fresh EP seamlessly bridges classic 70s Jamaican dub with modern, bass-heavy and dubwise delights, starting with 'Isms & Schisms'. Rawls tap into deep lineage with 'Native Sons Part 2', a limited 7" pulling heavyweight verses from Black Thought, Busta Rhymes, De La Soul and Jungle Brothers' Mike G and Afrika. It's a sprawling nod to the Native Tongues era, retooled for now; lyrically dense, spiritually charged, and anchored by Rawls' crisp, jazz-touched production. The single lands ahead of a spring 2025 compilation with Dostoyevskian undertones, Notes From The Underground, via Fat Beats. Review: Described as a "limitless" musician by RVNG International, Colombia-born sound artist Lucrecia Dalt has done well to align herself with this description so far. Since 2012, she's produced an average of one album per every other year or so, and that's not to mention her various electronic pop and sound designer EP detours for stopover outfits like Hanson and Deceptions Order Blank. The now Berliner suggests the emergence of yet another LP with a prefigurative two tracks, shared on the B-side by multi-instrumentalist Mabe Fratti. Also with covetous guest prod by ambient pop legend and former Japan-fronting icon David Sylvian, Dalt brings a strange distillation of Latin lyricism and breathalysed electronica on 'Cosa Rara', with vacuumed handclaps and surreal ghost-post-prod, proferring a "thrilling escapade of sound and psychology".

Review: Florida-born rapper Doechii's 'Anxiety' didn't land overnight; it bubbled up from a 2019 YouTube demo, got sampled by Sleepy Hallow in 2023, then roared back in 2025 as a full-blown hit. Rerecorded and officially released via Top Dawg and Capitol, the track hinges on a warped lift from Gotye and Kimbra's 2011 smash, flipping that now-familiar hook into a tense, twitchy backdrop for Doechii's switchblade delivery. It's part rap confession, part pop catharsis, and all nerve. The song's viral comeback, sparked by TikTok, pushed it ever up the charts, cracking the top ten in the US and climbing to number one in Australia and Switzerland. Added as a bonus cut to Alligator Bites Never Heal, 'Anxiety' also spawned a Mackel-directed video that slyly nods to its core sample source.

Much of that - including a quartet of must-have albums - has appeared via Los Angeles' Stones Throw Records. Here they make a rare appearance on another imprint - Japan's Lawson Entertainment to be exact - with a surprise cover of a British boogie gem from the early 80s - Intrigue's sought-after 'I Like It (Money Crazy)'. Their take is respectful to the original but altogether more polished, sparkling and colourful, with Hawthorne providing a typically impressive lead vocal. On the flip, they get a little more down and dirty in an L.A synth-funk style, alongside Not So Bad, on original number 'Always'. In a word: essential!

Review: Now six EPs deep into his catalogue, this artist continues to refine a signature Balearic sound that evokes sun-drenched beaches and late summer evenings. The standout track here is 'Le Reve', a lush and hypnotic piece that channels the spirit of Cafe del Mar's golden era. It opens with warm pads and a dreamy melodic flow that gently washes over the listener. The highlight, though, is the vocal performance from Liza Carrey. Her voice is breathy, sultry and haunting, weaving through the track with a gentle intensity that perfectly complements the mood. For the remix, Swiss producer Lexx steps in and subtly transforms the original into something even more relaxed. A laid-back Latin rhythm with soft percussive flourishes and beachside warmth, turning the track into a slow-burning coastal cruiser. It is a perfect blend of downtempo charm and balearic soul, maintaining the emotional tone of the original while adding a fresh rhythmic touch. A serene and seductive journey.

Flat caps, ochre-rimmed glasses and dug crates seem to surround Skill like bees to honey, as the self-professed "pioneer in the purveyance of soulful, funky and jazzy hip-hop" makes evident his own expertise in a monosyllabic name. Two seconds in and we already know that 'Tribute To The Godfather' refers to none other than James Brown; we hear his many rhythm-perfect funk "huhs" striating the a fearsome breaks opener. We conclude on the sax-furloughed 'Danger', which steers hip-hoppier, and sacrifices the original vocals from Brown for an unknown sample source, though the King Of Soul's reign is not lost on it.

Review: Phil Mison, long revered for his chill-out sets and Balearic sensibility as a DJ, returns as Cantoma with a new single that perfectly captures the spirit of sunset listening. With over two dozen releases, this UK producers latest 'Light As Before', is a gentle and evocative piece built on Latin percussion, breezy guitar work and a standout horn section that lifts the track into a golden-hour daydream. It's the kind of track that feels tailor-made for a coastal terrace, a glass in hand and nowhere to be but the present. The B-side remix is a tasteful reimagining that dials down the horns and replaces them with soft flutes and delicate acoustic textures. This version leans deeper into the groove with a more introspective yet still melodic mood. It trades some of the exuberance for warmth and depth, making it an ideal complement to the original. Both sides highlight Mison’s continued mastery of Balearic downtempo.

It's a raw and direct funk-soul sound that has been increasingly popular in recent years with champions like Floating Points often weaving it into his sets. On the B-side, they offer a freshly recorded take on 'Panama' by Roy Porter Sound Machine, which was previously only found on select CD editions. AMDS
RDIO
Review: Perro Bueno Edits has been behind some much-sought-after edit releases in recent times and this one is another of the same. The fifth entry in the cult series again looks to unearth rare Afro disco gems and rework them with precision and soul. On Side A, 'AMDS' is a hypnotic cut with a rolling bassline that radiates warmth as the original is respectfully reimagined with sharp edits and an extended arrangement built for movement. The B-side is a spiritual stunner that melds heartfelt vocals with layered rhythms and dreamy keys to back the soulful vocal. It's a dubbed-out groove perfect for late nights with some bright horns adding extra vitality.

Bounce Castle - "Made You Look" (Bengaluru Bounce remix)
Altered Tapes - "Tiger Styles" (36 Chambers remix)
Review: The seventh and final release in Heat Rock Records' first series procures two further internationally infused bangers. On the A, Bounce Castle (Chicago) delivers a dancefloor-ready, Bollywood-inspired remix of a standout track from QB's Finest. Flip the record, and Altered Tapes (Chicago) brings a vibrant, cumbia-dancehall-breaks version of a Wu-Tangy, 36 Chambers classic.

Got To Get Away
Review: Originally hailing from Washington DC, Father's Children were one of the capital's most promising funk outfits in the late 70s. This new 7" reissue on South Street Soul revives two prized tracks from their Mercury Records era, produced by Wayne Henderson of The Crusaders. 'Hollywood Dreaming' is a breezy, rolling slice of mellow soul-funkithe sort of elegant groove that turns up on late-night radio, all gentle clavs and cruising vocals. Flip it and 'Shine On' turns up the energy, driven by a snapping slap bassline, crisp brass jabs and a slick group vocal arrangement. Both cuts originally appeared on their 1979 LP, but the original 45 has long been a holy grail for collectorsifetching triple digits. This reissue not only preserves the format but delivers on fidelity and style, giving DJs and heads alike a long-awaited chance to spin these Washington-grown grooves without fear of shelling out a fortune.

Review: A cornerstone of East Coast hip-hop's golden era, Naughty By Nature's 'Feel Me Flow' gets a 2025 reissue on limited edition black 7" vinyl. Originally released in 1995, it stands as one of the trio's most commercially successful and artistically sharp singles, built around a shimmering summer-ready groove and driven by Treach's blistering yet effortless flow. It was the third single taken from the group's Grammy-winning Poverty's Paradise album and quickly became a chart success, peaking at number three on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart. The track also picked up a Grammy nomination and reached a new generation when it was used in the Eminem-starring film 8 Mile. With this reissue, the iconic original is backed with its instrumentalihighlighting the warm production and razor-sharp drum work that often gets overshadowed by Treach's commanding vocal presence. A must for collectors of classic hip-hop and mid-90s boom bap history.

Place Where I Go
Kapi Ngalyananni
Review: From Papunya in Australia's Northern Territory, indiginous Luritja artist Keanu Nelson returns with a new two-track 7", produced in collaboration with Sydney's Yuta Matsumura. It's a continuation of their distinct blend of desert-rooted storytelling and homespun electronics. 'Place Where I Go' merges YouTube-era hip-hop with dubbed-out textures and plaintive piano, Nelson's voice diaristic and close. 'Kapi Ngalyananni', sung in Luritja, is a water song laced with clapsticks, parched melodica and ghostly pads. Shaped with minimal means, these tracks shimmer with spirit and quiet clarity, holding space for both the ancestral and the everyday.

99 Problems
Review: Lil Static rerelease Jay Z's perhaps most well known singles: '99 Problems' and 'New York State Of Mind' which were the first ever to top the charts and propel the rap turned mogul's name to fame. Also bookending two distinct phases of his career, the A side is a polished love letter to New York built on soaring piano loops and Alicia Keys' chorus, crystallising his transition into cultural statesman mode: less hustler, more mayor. Released in 2009, it echoed Frank Sinatra's civic romanticism but filtered through the lens of Marcy Projects and Roc Nation boardrooms. '99 Problems', from The Black Album (2003), hit different: raw, confrontational, stripped down to Rick Rubin's punk-funk minimalism. Courtroom tension and street wits flip a snappy chorus into a layered commentary on race, law enforcement, and the media.
