Review: Central, the "salsa band closest to the club scene" based in Tokyo, follows up former consecutive singles hits ('Samurai, 'Pastime Paradise') with the new full-length album in which they're housed, Flor De Roble. With a core primetime salsa cover of Stevie Wonder's 'Pastime Paradise' leading the charge, we've then a string of originals here, from 'Flor De 1.1 Rb.' and 'Samurai'. Also included are Carabali's 'Was I Surprised' and Crazy Ken Band's infamous soul masterpiece 'Towel', both again adorned in a bold salsa arrangement. An honorific 25th Anniversary album, though it is new.

Jackfruit (dub)
Review: Denmark’s Central (Natal Zaks) offers an unusually raspy palette on their latest for Help Records, ‘Plask’, fusing the circuit-bent, dubby sound of the European sophisti-techno traditions with the arrangements and sensibilities of progressive ambient techno. Giving off something of the vibe of a late summer solstice festival melded fluidly with that of a cerebral, chemically-aided morning after, ‘Nago’ and ‘Jackfruit’ pay careful attention to the control of droughty texture, refusing to allow the otherwise indulged drum saturation to impinge on the overall dynamics (no wonder “harmony” refers to both music and sociality). Title track ‘Plask’ veers more peaktime shuffle, with the odd tripletting refraction heard contrasting an otherwise pressure-packed, virile mix, and an alternate version of ‘Jackfruit’ rounding things off for pacier measure.

Review: Central's Livet offers four tracks that delve into the depths of house and techno that will work perfectly on the dancefloor. Side-1 opens with 'Livet,' a track that delivers a smooth yet impactful groove. This is followed by 'One Thing I'm Not,' which brings an upbeat and fun rhythm, perfect for lifting the energy on the dancefloor. On Side-2, 'Footmix' presents a quirky yet deep minimal sound, with unique textures that keep the listener intrigued. The EP concludes with 'Even,' a track that dives into deeper, more immersive territory, showcasing a more profound and contemplative side of Central’s production. Overall, Livet stands out for its ability to fuse melodic and minimal elements, offering a versatile set of tracks ideal for a DJ to have a ball with.

Pastime Paradise (single edit) (4:30)
Pastime Paradise (Insrtumental) (4:31)
Review: Central's latest single, 'Pastime Paradise,' breathes new life into Stevie Wonder's 1979 classic with a fresh Central-style update. The groove, crafted by percussion, bass and keyboards, is infectious, while the horn ensemble's arrangement is a testament to Central's unique style. As a precursor to their upcoming album, this 7" single is a true gem, showing Central's penchant to revitalise timeless tracks with their signature sound.
