Dubfire presents EVOLV - "Deadbug" (7:30)
Harvey McKay - "Find Yourself" (7:19)
Eats Everything - "Organico" (6:10)
Review: As you'd perhaps expect, there are a couple of seriously big hitters involved in the latest missive in Drumcode's ongoing "A Sides" vinyl series. Former Deep Dish man Dubfire unfurls the EVOLV project and offers up "Deadbug", a stomping slab of dark and moody big room techno where foreboding riffs and fizzing electronic pulses ride a tough-but-snappy techno groove. The other "big name" contribution comes from Bristolian Eats Everything. He steals the show with the rave-centric bounce of "Organica" and its alluring mixture of hip-house style yelps, wonk-a-donk riffs and thunderous drums. Further heavyweight sleaze is provided by Harvey McKay and the dirty acid techno filth of "Find Yourself".

Layton Giordani & HI-LO - "Rabbit Hole" (6:39)
Charles D - "Traction" (7:36)
Review: Drumcode and its Swedish founder Adam Beyer have rather become synonymous with big room sounds known as business techno. They don't do anything to shed that tag here with two more epic sounds designed to wash over vast crowds in the world's largest super clubs. Layton Giordani & HI-LO aka Oliver Heldens kick off with 'Rabbit Hole' which is a wall of grainy synth and rolling drums that is simple but effective. Charles D's 'Traction' is another coarsely textured techno roller with splashes of industrial synth and a general sense of subtle elevation.

Hypnos (6:12)
Hera (6:28)
Review: While Dutch DJ/producer Oliver Heldens may be more well known for his future house exploits, he has been cultivating a love of techno separate from his mainstage persona as HI-LO, with releases on Octopus and Filth on Acid. His latest comes courtesy of the ever reliable Drumcode in the form of the Hypnos EP on which he gets serious on two absolutely massive tracks. On the Al first side you have the brooding rave drama of 'Hypnos' that's absolutely geared for peaking out under the strobe light, it's quite reminiscent of Kevin Saunderson's brand of Tronik House, as is B side offering 'Hera' which takes a much more euphoric turn with its epic chord progression sure to get the hands in the air.

Hi Lo vs Lusu - "Dizzy" (5:55)
Mesmerize (5:33)
Review: HI-LO, the darker techno alias of Oliver Heldens, is no stranger to the techno world, having already established himself on Adam Beyer's Drumcode label. His latest collaboration with LUSU on the track 'DIZZY' is an electrifying take on hyperactive techno, blending frenetic percussion with driving synths. The track's use of a pitch-shifted vocal sample from Game's 'U Turn Me On' adds an extra layer of playfulness, yet the bassline ensures it stays grounded. The EP's second track, 'Mesmerize', offers a more emotional depth, with its Moroder-inspired bass and jazzy melodies carrying the track forward while keeping it high-energy.

Open Your Mind
Review: HI LO has had some huge collabs with Filth On Acid boss Reinier Zonneveld and now makes a step up to Adam Beyer's mighty Drumcode with more of his maximal techno sounds. 'Crescendo' is a raw slammer with hard edge and raw drums hitting hard beneath incendiary hi-hats and flashes of bright synth and twisted acid. It's a main room weapon of the highest order. 'Open Your Mind' is more ragged and unhinged, it's stark hits and bulky broken techno drums beneath a raucous mix of percussion and saw-tooth synths. No messing with these two.

Build To Destroy
Cat: DC 310. Rel: 19 Nov 24
Flatline (6:30)
Build To Destroy (6:25)
Review: Adam Beyer and his Drumcode imprint turn their efforts to new horizons, this time opening the door to Bulgarian bright spark Metodi Hristov, with his new 'Build To Destroy' EP. The two-track trammeller comprises 'Flatline' and 'Build To Destroy', both of which tracks bring equal parts smooth transient edges and roughened, ruffing synth design, resulting in a straddling of both trance and industrial techno motifs - not quite totally dreamy, not quite totally raucous. Track two is a special example of techno-rollage, its murderous transitional SFX adding an adept flair to an otherwise hung-in-the-balance slice of dancefloor fuel.
