Review: ASC's Reflections is a masterclass in drum & bass and ambient music. The album is awash with deep, melodic soundscapes and old-school 90s beats that will transport you to another world. From the gentle pace of 'Glaciers' to the more upbeat 'Prototype' each track on the album is a sonic journey that will leave you wanting more. ASC's production is impeccable, and his use of samples is nothing short of masterful. The result is an album that is both nostalgic and fresh, with a sound that is uniquely his own. Whether you're a fan of drum & bass, ambient, or simply good music, Reflections is an album that you won't want to miss. In addition to the stunning music, the album's packaging is also top-notch.

Review: Covert operator ASC continues his astral travels for his current series of intergalactic breakbeat explorations with 'Star Cluster'. Following 'Isometric Projection' and 'Cause & Effect', this EP once again reaches to the heavens for its essence and rolls out with shimmering, emotional charm and more than its fair share of heavy drum punches. The dreamy vocal calls and slamming breaks of 'Solyaris' and the tightly coiled spring groove of 'Oblivion' are both major highs on this trip.

Review: You'd be hard pushed to keep up with everything ASC puts out on his own Auxiliary and Spatial labels, let alone what crops up elsewhere, but at least you can be sure wherever you check in, the quality will be unerringly high. On this latest 12" for Spatial, we get whisked away on a cloud of atmospheric d&b finery with 'Dreamcatcher' before plummeting to earth with the hard-knocking drum science of 'Tranquility'. 'Drifting Thru' pairs rough amens with epic pads and then 'Floatation' explores more acutely angled breaks and an immersive pool of melodic composition, holding true to the Spatial remit as an outlet for the deeper end of the junglist spectrum.

Silent Running (7:26)
Review: Arguably one of the most prolific electronic musicians active today, drum n' bass cosmonaut ASC (James Clements) is back with a new deep-space venture. Having scoured the outer reaches of the observable universe and making it back without being time-dilated into oblivion, 'Perpetual Motion' is Clements' latest alien sonic haul. Venturing into nods to obscure drum n' bass variants such as raggatek, 'Creation' opts for advanced, techy breakscience amid dreamy pad arps and electric transitions. 'Placid' harks back to the dawn of drum n' bass, immortalizing the call of the loom bird as it's mixed among fine drumwork. If the A-siders were black holes, then the Bs are stars; 'Essence' has the most basic yet most infectious breakbeat, while 'Silent Running' is a lonesome closer, suitable for soundtracking the most daring of untethered spacewalks.

Review: Space jungle extraordinaire ASC is as prolific as they come, and this week he's back again with 'Sphere Of Influence', a synth-heavy present-day take on the dreamy origins of his chosen sound. Beginning with 'The Arcane', we're most struck with ASC's emphasis on atmospherics and synthwork - they come first compared to his relatively functional breakscience, which are like godlike apparatuses guiding us through heavily nuanced, heavenly vistas. That functionality goes out of the window with 'Threeform', though - an unusually sound-designed number which introduces suddenly-huge variation in the breaks, in what is said to be ¾ time.

Azure (7:24)
Loose Ends (7:42)
Review: Relentlessly prolific and inspired to the last, ASC continues to round out the sonic impression of his most recent label Spatial with this luxurious excursion into the deeper end of the d&b spectrum. The new age pads on 'Divine Intervention' might well trigger the odd Logical Progression memory, but there's a certain snappiness and focus to the breakbeat which feels entirely ASC's own. 'Variable State' probes at tension and release between outright ambience and airy breaks which contrast beautifully with the fulsome, rounded subs in a manner which should satisfy Photek fans. 'Azure' offers a more sensitive, melancholic kind of roller, while 'Loose Ends' goes in hard on the drum edits and epic atmospheric blooms. No one does it like ASC.

Review: ASC can't really do any wrong if you ask us, whether crafting suspensory ambient or laying down killer jungle cuts. It's the latter which he does here for the Spatial label in the form of this great looking multi-colour splatter vinyl. 'Infinity' has you adrift in the cosmos on dusty amen breaks, then '2097' is a tight and kinetic number with mystic lead and yelping vocal fragments. There is yet more deep space mystery to the melodies of 'What Lies Beneath' then humid closer 'Rainforest' has watery droplets falling down physical drum breaks that make you move your hole body.

Review: There's seemingly no end to ASC's offerings to the drum & bass world and so it continues on this beautifully packaged black splattered yellow 10" from the Waveforms series. 'Waveform 03' is an airy jungle excursion with explosive amens set off against vast expanses of pads, while 'Waveform 04' locks into a sleeker, techier approach where the icy atmospherics have more space to stretch out. No one is even close to the quality and quantity of ASC, and this is yet another essential addition to his huge legacy.

Review: ASC's Waveforms series is yet another outlet for one of the most prolific producers in any genre you care to mention. For the completists it's hard work keeping up, but how are you going to argue with tracks as fire as these? 'Waveform 01' has a lighter feel thanks to the aqueous synth tones slipping and sliding around the crisp breaks, but it still kicks off in earnest when the amens come knocking. 'Waveform 02' is a more heads down affair, but as always ASC creates scintillating atmospheres around the drums which make the listening experience that much deeper.

Review: There's something decidedly bleak, almost heartbreakingly sad, about this collaborative album from sometime D&B producers ASC (head honcho of Auxiliary) and Sam KDC. As with ASC's most recent full-length, the steadfastly ambient The Light That Burns Twice As Bright, it's a moody and atmospheric affair, dealing mostly in FX-laden drones, slow-burn melodies and near-endless chords. At times it sounds like a post-modern take on the drifting ambience of Pete Namlook, at others a weary comment on the current state of Western society. Throughout, there's an odd warmth and emotional resonance that belies its introspective approach. Closer "No Safety Zone", for example, seemingly shimmers with toasty warmth.

Review: A punishing yet melodic track, "Orbit" opens with an epic intro before tight crunching amen's take to the stage and thrust this track straight into dancefloor territory. Heavily supported and currently taking clubs by storm all over Europe and the US, "Orbit" delivers a memorable vocal hook alongside a washing backdrop of horns and synths, and when combined with the deep subby bassline you are left with a genre-defying piece of music that will add serious weight to virtually any set. Review: Arriving on vinyl that sits somewhere between gold and caramel is "Machines", a suitably expansive and futuristic stepper from husband and wife duo, ASC and Vaccine. Heavily pressurised bass rumbles the foundations of a punchy rhythmic thrust whilst a surfeit of industrial sonic textures adds a somewhat glacial depth for a track that demonstrates the continual fracturing of the drum and bass template. ASC goes alone on the B Side "Bleep Test", a digital rude boy strut through murked out sub bass frequencies led by a surfeit of bleeptastic melodies and metal tipped drums.

Review: One of electronic music's most forward thinking minds drops two cerebral cuts of darkly spacious D&B on Autonomic. Following the release of a slew of fine singles and the stunning 2010 long player Nothing Is Certain, ASC's sonic aesthetic is now inexorably linked with the oft-discussed Autonomic sound. Fans have been drooling over the release of these two cuts for a hot minute now, with the languid drums, eerie synths and ethereal vocal snatches in "Reform" slightly edging the more robust tribal rhythms and sub bass of "Starkwood". Brooding stuff from start to finish.

Review: Jungle of this calibre is becoming an increasing rarity nowadays, but perhaps that sense of scarcity is exactly what makes this new EP from ASC, 'Confluence Of Light', exciting. Like the cold precision of the breaks and Reeses that make this one up, it's pure economics. From the very beginning of opener 'Sunless Sky', jungle riffage is effortlessly embedded in nighttime bass, while Cetacean sound effects echo and twirl about the midrange. The abyssal sonic trend continues through nightcalls 'Cosmic Energy', 'Stargate' and 'Prophecy'. Likening drum n' bass to the cosmos, as it should be, this is a monumentally spaced-out release.

Review: One of the architects behind the little-known Autonomic Drum n Bass style, British producer James Clements returns once again with another EP intersection of synths, ambience and drum n bass elements. Don't be fooled by the short 4 track run, the runtime is half an hour of relaxed bangers. 'State of Mind' sounds ripped straight from a PS2 pause screen with its jungle breaks infused with ambient droning and deep 808s, making the 7 minutes feel like it flies by as sound washes over your head. This is the first release of many on Clements' new label Spatial, in a move to bring back the underappreciated atmospheric drum n bass scene (or what snobby journalists once called 'Intelligent Drum n Bass', to the chagrin of pretty much everybody who heard the term). In Clement's own words "Hope you're all as excited about bringing back this form of music as I am".

Review: Only a week or two after dropping the second of two ambient albums in 2022, masterful sound sculptor ASC is back with another release. This one finds him embracing drum & bass on limited coloured vinyl for Past Inside The Present. The majestic Eye Of The Storm is a suspensory trip through the heavens with delicate drum & bass rhythms and lush swathes of synths. 'Ascension' channels some vintage Good Looking vibes with its aqueous pads and bash amen edits, while 'Solar Rays' is more tightly clipped to give a more contemporary flavour without losing that dreamy, melancholic mood. Review: ASC is an absolute don whether crafting ambient or drum & bass or whatever in between. Here he is on the Spatial label which was set up with a strict ethos and devotion to mid-90s vibes that take in breakbeats, luscious pads, heavy 808 bass and a 160 bpm tempo. ASC opens the EP with a tried and tested amen banger with classic chop and splice techniques. 'Nectar' is then dark and tense yet brilliantly alluring and 'Flashback' takes you back to the heart of a strobe-lit and gritty dance floor in the 90s. The icing on the cake is 'Hindsight' with its spaced-out sounds and jittery cymbals locking you in for the thrilling ride.

It's another fresh offering that was inspired by the recent resurgence of old-school jungle and drum & bass sounds from mainstays like Photek, Source Direct and Metalheadz. It's a fierce start from 'Process Of Elimination' that bashes you over the head with hard, crisp drums and edgy synths before 'Orchid' gets more floaty and jazzy and 'Hostile Intent' explores a more minimal vibe. With the third part due next year, this remains a vital trilogy.

Review: For the latest volume in their ongoing series of celebratory Decade EPs, Samurai Music has decided to showcase new works by producers known for looking beyond the conventional boundaries of drum and bass. The action kicks off with a wonderfully creepy, feverish and hypnotic workout from Ancestral Voices that abandons traditional D&B tropes in favour of trippy rhythms and an admirable experimental ethos. ASC's thrillingly weighty and industrial-tinged "Area Check" takes a similar approach, while Lemna's "Rahu" - a buzzing and mind-altering excursion - sits somewhere between experimental D&B, slipped dubstep and Livity Sound style off-kilter techno. Sam KDC's "Locus", meanwhile, is the audio equivalent of a hallucinatory trip down the Amazon with only horror movie melodies and slowly intensifying, tribal-tinged rhythms for company.

Review: One of the great joys of James Clements' music as ASC is its thrilling unpredictability. While his productions have always been rooted in drum and bass, he's released little straightforward D&B for the best part of a decade. His latest outing on Samurai is dark and hard to pigeonhole, offering tracks that variously mix and match elements of intense acid, Autechre-style IDM, the sub-weight of D&B culture, the aural haziness of ambient and the skittish post-D&B rhythms that have long marked out his work. Our picks of a very strong bunch are the buzzing experimental techno psychedelia of acid-laden closing cut "Currents" and the sparse, sub-heavy haziness of opener "The Siren", where high tempo acid lines bubble away above a suitably hazy and paranoid backing track.

Starting out with the psychotic acid experiment of "Ignite" it is then business as usual on the title track, with its dark atmospheres and industrial textures contrasted by a belting gabber style beat; it's pretty brilliant. On the flip "Reveal" is another furious 170 BPM experiment, innovative as much as it is utterly confronting, while final track "Vanium" switches to cruise control on this mysteriously bleepy sci-fi epic somewhere between Sahko and the Autonomic sound. Review: It's been two years since ASC released music on Geoff Presha's Samurai Horo, an experimental offshoot of the New Zealander's main Samurai Music operation. It's ASC's fourth release for the label which finds James Clements spiralling down even further into the nebulous world of Horo, with "Loophole" a perfect example of what the label stands for: unclassifiable drum and bass that sounds like techno. A drone-based "Diffusion Loop (Rumble mix)" is murky with distant breathes of vocals haunting its background while a softly cracking snare hits fills the foreground. "Broadside" is downbeat and full of the similar science-fiction synths that define "Loophole" while "Ashen" sounds like something Samuel Kerridge might make after a night out with dBridge.

Review: There's no denying ASC's work ethic; the Brit-in-San Diego has released a steady stream of albums and singles since 1999, and still finds time to run the lauded Auxillary imprint. Here he returns to Samurai Red Seal, with his first full-length for the imprint since 2012. As usual, he's working at drum and bass's experimental fringes, delivering blends of fuzzy electronics, creepy textures and subtle, pared-back jungle rhythms that arguably have more in common with vintage IDM (the much-forgotten Neotropic project on Ninja Tune's NTone offshoot, for starters) than blistering dancefloor jungle. Few do this kind of murky D&B futurism better, though, and Imagine The Future is a mighty impressive set.

Review: Relentlessly prolific and consistently brilliant d&b explorer ASC lands on Over/Shadow for an extended excursion into his beautifully crafted sound. It's not been a minute since he dropped the Hiding In Plain Sight album on Horo, and yet here we are being bowled over by another advanced lesson in breakbeat invention. ASC's sound has a reliable sense of atmosphere, but beyond that he's a versatile producer who can twist breaks and bass up in all manner of elegant formations, and so it goes on this album. It's a proper d&b long player, with the kind of immersive tone that encourages an attentive ear even if there's plenty of heft for the DJs to get busy with.

Review: ASC is one of the most deft studio hands out there if you ask us. Each time he drops new heat he backs that up and this time is no different. This two track 12" opens with 'Black Rain' which is powered by crashing amen breaks and dark ambiance. It's heavy and moody and distant vocal cries bring subtle human soul. 'Sixth Sense' is another trademark sounds from this drum & bass don withers haunting sense of emotion and heavy breaks once again making for a fascinating duality. There really is no denying the magic of ASC on this one.

Karma
Sympathy
Review: Leftfield bass scientist ASC is enjoying some great exposure right now. And rightly so; he helped set the blue print for much of the deep, progressive halfstep D&B we hear today. "Sonic Assault" is a resounding dub triumph, very much like Calibre's "Steptoe". "Fourier System" takes this one step further with skippier breakbeats and emotive minor chords on the tubular bass. This is developed again on "Karma" as the dubby subs still pound but the breakbeat rattles with militant, early jungle charm. "Sympathy", meanwhile, brings us back down to earth softly with a dreamy chord sequence and cushion-like synth motifs. Assault? An audio massage more like.

Lone Star
Review: Auxiliary boss and audio adventurer ASC invites us to get with the "Programme" as he lays down four beautiful compositions that flitter around the idea of concept of drum & bass while remaining wholly unclassifiable and sprung with surprise. "Solemnity" is a beat heavy trip into the cosmos, all crumpled beats and icy textures. "Fulcrum", meanwhile, casts a much dreamier, mesmerising effect thanks to rippling synths and breath-taking washes. "Wave Upon Wave" has a touch of the Vangelis about it; cinematic, wistful and star-gazing, it's full of emotion. "Lone Star" closes the show with the most D&B flavoured track on the EP; the breakbeats cascade delicately in the background while pianos weave in and out of the mix, held in place by ambient pads.

ASC - "Dragnet"

Es Tereo & Marlyn - "Cutting You Loose"

Review: Make way for the fourth Scope sampler. Horo's long playing assault on the senses continues with more of electronic music's most adventurous audio conjurers. ASC smelts classic dub dynamics with cinematic motifs and subtle, tricked out amens that whisper in the shadows while Sam KDC's "Erosion" takes directly into haunted steel factory with his industrial echoes and an overwhelming feeling of danger. Further on, the drums on "Cutting You Loose" are so tightly layered and daringly positioned, there's a tangible sense of dizziness. Ena closes the show with the most outer planetary composition of the sampler where a mechanical heartbeat provides consistency in a foggy weave of oppressive atmospheres. Far out.

Dream Of The Future
Review: Flood Tide Rising sees ASC returns to the Space Cadets label in style for a second release, coaxing the London label deeper into the Drum & Bass ether with three absorbing examples of his trademark futurism. Commencing with the title track, ASC sets a foreboding tone of droning electronic pulses and swirling ghostly voices trapped deep beneath. Alongside it "Outflow" is an example of ASC's talent for sonically exploring vast cavernous soundscapes, whilst the B side is granted whole to fidgeting dystopian machine funk of "Dream of the Future".

909 Rhythm Track
Review: ASC returns to Samurai, and he's armed with a wide spread. "Polemic" leads, and does so with a sharp-tongued acid stomp. Think Plastikman's "Spastik" but with modern day production values. Pulverisingly dark and stark, it's already found favour with the likes of dBridge and Sam KDC. "Oracle" and "909 Rhythm Track" bring it up the rear; the former pumps with classic Germanic techno tribalism while the latter pings and pongs with 909 delight.

Sacred Moments
Review: Fresh from opening proceedings on the newly relaunched R&S offshoot Apollo, Manchester based producer Synkro adds another notable entry to his growing discography, collaborating with ASC across two sublime electronic arrangements. They may have the Atlantic Ocean between them, but Synkro and his more celebrated collaborator share clear production ideals and this is hopefully the beginning of an intriguing working relationship. Swift yet delicate rhythms and tectonic deep bass form the backdrop to "Borderline" with ASC and Synkro slowly revealing an expansive atmosphere that positively tingles with delight. In contrast, "Sacred Moments" sees the duo in more pensive form, filling every iota of space between the half step thump that drives the track with downwards spirals of glowering yet restrained textures.

Review: Amazingly, this is the ninth album from experimental D&B veteran ASC. Those who've followed his career to date should know what to expect; an atmospheric and all-enveloping sound that uses traditional D&B rhythms and structures sparingly, instead flipping between clandestine electronica, IDM and shuffling ambience (see the crackly opener "Spheres", which recalls his recent work with fellow experimentalist Sam KDC on the Decayed Society LP). It's a fusion that delivers real quality, from the late night '90s vibes of "Glass Wall", and guitar-laden Balearica of "Oneironaut", to the beatless beauty of "A Song For Hope", technological grooves of "Prometheus", and glitchy oddness of "Stay True".

ASC & Subwave - "Storm System"
Nuance - "Tread"
Review: Cover Operations presents 'Storm System' from ASC, Subwave, and Nuance. The title track 'Storm System' swirls into the mix with a torrent of sweeping pads and brooding synth lines. Sultry vocals play off against the pads and set the tempo before the storm comes crashing in with waves of layered percussion and breaks that charge in while the techy bass stabs keep things rolling, bouncing off the beat patterns perfectly. Newcomer Nuance on the flip side hails from the cold climate of Finland and you can almost hear the desolate freezing landscapes captured in sound-form on his debut track here; 'Tread'. From the icy intro pads, to the film score vocals, right through to the brooding menace of a bassline that creeps in, this track is all about capturing that dark cinematic vibe, and it does so gracefully. Nuance proves he can craft a great track with this outing, and with tunes like this, there’s definitely no reason why you won't be seeing this name a lot more on 12" slabs of wax in your shops soon.

Tension
Review: With previous and upcoming releases on Offshore, 720, Good Looking, Warm Communications, Ohm Resistance, Thermal, Testflight, Nu Directions, Synaptic Plastic, Make:Shift and his own Covert Operations, he needs no further introduction. This man is as versatile at drum'n'bass as Ron Jeremy is at porn. For every techy, choppy, atmospheric or experimental tune ASC knocks up, Ron Jeremy knocks up a gal from various cultures. A deep yet powerful stepper entitled "Snowstorm" creeps up on you and then knocks you off your feet like Jessica Alba in every man's dream. Just like good results require patient foreplay, this track requires the feel of a long intro before it bursts it’s fountain into a frenzy. The flip "Tension", is equally as good and every time you listen to it it's like Jessica Alba bringing her best friend over for a threesome; INTENSE! Crushing drums and a dirrrrty bassline lead the way into a heavenly female moan, just the way it should be. All in all, a perfect 12" of rhythm to round your night off.

More focused on the jungle side of his output, 'Thematic Purpose' is his nineth release on the label and it kicks in all directions. 'Burst Transmission' and 'Whispers' are the heavier, more floor-focused tracks while 'Psionic Bond' and 'Future Music' take a deeper, more introspective approach. Stunning.
