Timekeeper (original mix)
Timekeeper (Calyx & Teebee remix)
Review: Fresh off the back of their Metalheadz signing comes this sheet-metal stepper co-lab with Judda on Subtitles. Stripped back and simplistic, it's all in the bass Q&A, haunted alien rushes and clam-tight two-step. In a word: timeless. For added groove gravitas jump on Calyx & TeeBee's remix. They've kept the distinctive bass lead while adding an array of their processed sounds and a little more in the hi-hat department. Exceedingly sick. And highly limited too...

Mythos
Blunt
Review: All aboard the collaboration express as two of D&B's most talented artists collide for some extreme audio fun. "Mythos" needs little introduction, having been the talk of drum & bass forums since late last year: itchy, scratchy and eminently mixable with other tunes, it's instantly distinctive in the same way Audio nails his riffs. "Blunt" is a much deeper, far-reaching affair with abyss-level pads, ethereal vocals and a trippy bewildering breakdown. Both are absolutely massive.

She Said
Review: One of D&B's most exciting prospects, Emperor steps up to Kasra's revered Critical with his first full EP. Known for his devastatingly fiery brand of drum & bass, here he playfully flips the switch with two much deeper, soulful cuts. "Begin" is a complex breathy beast; all dreamy and glitchy. Imagine Lamb produced by Calyx & TeeBee. All we need to say about "She Said" is this: "Brown Paper Bag" flavoured double bassline. Only funkier. Oh yes.

Drum Machine
Core Jungle
Review: Yes! Dev Pandya casts aside the glacial soundscapes of his Alaska material in favour of something wholly ruder on this two tracker under the Paradox banner, which is in fact the 149th vinyl release of a illustrious career thus far. Lead cut on Drum Machine brings to mind Mo'Wax era Peshay with razor sharp break beats cascading off the grid whilst Pandya plays around with a rap vocal, with a sense of rhythmic purpose retained by the rumbling subs and cuts of distorted bass. Paradox's hardcore roots are referenced on "Core Jungle" which is packed with vinyl rip samples, crunched funk breaks and heavy delay - this latter track was apparently written specifically for vinyl mastering and will not surface in digital format.

Flintstone
Review: Launching ProgRAM last year with his single "Pandorum", Frankee has become a flagship artist for the label. Returning once again with his first EP, he and ProgRAM hope to take the D&B world by storm with his unique take on dancefloor-ready, intelligent tunes. Each track shows a different side to the UK born producer, from the atmospheric-laden unearthliness "Harlequin" to the straight-up dancefloor destroying sounds of "Paranormal"; the intensely exotic vibes of "Saffron" permeating a perfectly rolling Reese and ends up with the comedy jungle influences of "Flintstone" where cartoon becomes reality. Don't believe us? Have a listen yourself - it's all there.

Polemic
Oracle
909 Rhythm Track
Review: ASC returns to Samurai, and he's armed with a wide spread. "Polemic" leads, and does so with a sharp-tongued acid stomp. Think Plastikman's "Spastik" but with modern day production values. Pulverisingly dark and stark, it's already found favour with the likes of dBridge and Sam KDC. "Oracle" and "909 Rhythm Track" bring it up the rear; the former pumps with classic Germanic techno tribalism while the latter pings and pongs with 909 delight.

Bumbaclart
Dilate
Review: Renowned for their consistently dark, stark production power Amoss never cease to deliver. "Bumbaclart" pulverises from the off with its industrial strength kick drums and droning, warped riff. Rising with uncompromised menace, it's like an orchestra of steam-powered machines, slamming and drilling in perfect harmony. "Dilate" is a much more brooding affair. Lolloping on a slimy halfstep laced with a series of processed croaks and slurs, if you're looking to prang out your floor, this guarantees chaos.

Dawn Of A Dark Day (feat Foreign Beggars - Receptor remix)
Killing The Light (feat Inne Eysermans - June Miller remix)
Review: Black Sun Empire have spent almost the last two decades producing some of the most intense neurofunk around, after helping create and form the sub-genre with their unique trance and hardcore influences. Their latest LP, From The Shadows, was met in 2012 to acclaim and a feeling of relief - they hadn't changed, they hadn't swapped their sound for something else; here is a Drum & bass collective who are both consistent and bound to push the limits of their sound. Now returning in 2013 with a remix EP featuring the likes of Prolix, Receptor, June Miller, Telekinesis and Memtrix, it's time to go hard or go home. Dark and destructive from the word go, BSE aren't about to let their apocalyptic sound rest up any time soon.

Blueprint (feat Metropolis)
Playing Games (feat D Ablo)
Shadows (feat Strange U)
Burn Out (feat Phace Misanthrop)
Review: If you judge a producer by their ability to successfully apply a winning formula to a variety of styles, Alix Perez is a master. While drum and bass remains his forte, there's enough on Chroma Chords, his second album, to suggest that he's growing as a producer. This 12" double pack discards with the synth laden head nodders featured on the full album, though the four tracks here do still demonstrate the versatile nature of Chroma Chords. Thus the grimy hip hop of the Metropolis featuring "Blue Print" share plate space with the soulful stepping action of "Playing Games" whilst the second 12" has the excellent vintage Timbaaland does half step of "Shadows" (featuring breakout Eglo talent Strange U") paired up with the vicious "Burnout".

Phenomenon One (extended vocal mix)
Phenomenon One (Bladerunner dub mix)
Review: Original breakbeat DJ and one of the founding fathers of drum and bass, Ray Keith's part in the early days of the scene can't be overstated. Match the man himself with Tenor Fly, one of the most distinctive voices in breakbeat and drum and bass and you've got a recipe for some seriously baking riddims. Renegade Live is Keith's dream - a fully live jungle setup that brings energy and soul back to those dark rooms filled with bass and nodding heads. Potentially the hottest ticket for the forthcoming festival season, Bladerunner's dub remix packs some serious punch, adding after dark attitude and ghostly keys. Hotly tipped for this summer, all eyes on Renegade - don't sleep.

Neck Fink (feat Saxxon & Balistik)
Rare Groove (feat Saxxon)
Review: 2013 is looking set to be the year of Savage Rehab. Hot on the heels of the massive "4Ward" comes this ode to the classic Bristol flavoured rollers. "Neck Funk" leads with sharp steppy beats and a deliciously simplistic bassline that purrs as it bounces. Any fans of old Kartoons releases will be all over this. "Rare Groove" on the B is a similar affair just deeper and laced with big thick splashes of liquid guitar. Think Peshay. Think wicked.

Stealth & Stylus - "Dire Straights"
Stealth - "Deep Inside"
Review: Two key prospects in drum & bass's emerging new breed, Stealth and Stylus hook up for a gritty, snappy growler that's not too far away from the work of Optiv & BTK or even Calyx & TeeBee. Executed with precision sharpness, "Dire Straits" is a far cry from the guitar noodling rockers that share its name. Meanwhile on the B we find Stealth going solo on "Deep Inside". Armed with a Darrison-level vocal sample, it treads a fine line between filth and industrial soul. Lovely stuff.

Memories (feat Kevin Lee Roy)
Review: Endorsed by the likes of Hazard and Ray Keith, emerging contemporary jungle collective Cabin Fever are flying some high flags right now. Here we find them delivering their biggest EP to date for Tech Itch's Grid imprint and the results are solid gold. For stark, tearing darkness head directly to "Anti Matter", for the big old sweaty Dillinja style gnarl-up take a bite out of "Metronome", for the ultimate wobble-whack jump on "Let's Go" and for a soulful rush of emotions dive deep into "Memories". All bass bases covered... Just like the title says. Job done.

Bad Attitude
You Got Me So
Target
Malfunction
Review: Bern-based Brits Optiv & BTK need no introduction. From Virus, Renegade Hardware, Playaz and Shoguyn they've produced some of the heaviest and best-loved dancefloor-focused drum & bass on the scene. Aiming their sights at neurofunk legends Black Sun Empire's new label Blackout Music NL known for their penchant for the deviously dark things in life, this EP takes the evil end of their sound and runs with it. The title track sets aside five and half minutes to smash its way through some seriously hard stepping attitude while "You Got Me So" adds charred neuro to proceedings alongside the robotic battlefield that is "Target". If you like techy drums played at breakneck speed amongst bass blacker than Satan's metal collection, you've come to the right place.

Ginseng Smash
Akina
Review: Taking time out from his Ivy Lab project with Sabre and Halogenix, Stray gets his darkside on with this bad dream jungle workout. Whistling and rushing on some lovely rusty amens, the tripped out vocals and alien-landing loops on "Ginseng Smash" are a beautiful cacophony that work but in the most fragile / warped way. "Akina" is darker again; taking the juke/ghettotech template it's just as much techno as it is D&B. Truly heavy stuff. Not to be missed.

Membrane
Babylon
Review: Fresh from Loadstar's arena-slamming exploits, Ram head back to the underground with two outstanding pieces of grit from well established operators Gridlok and Prolix. There's more than a dash of Virus to "Membrane" with its scratchy complex riff and stranded-in-space SFX. "Babylon" is even more uncompromising thanks a pummelling bassline that growls with unabashed menace. Think Ram Trilogy's formative works and you get the idea. Pure D&B brutality.

Our Time
Make You Mine (feat Nicholas Noble)
Review: Following his Fokuz foray with Chartstalker, Bcee returns to his own Spearhead imprint for the first time since his Beat The System Remixes collection. Two rib-shaking rollers coated with breezy soul and grace, both "Our Time" and "Make You Mine" comes complete with the class we've long since expected from Bcee. The former is driven by delicate, near-Balearic guitar twangs and occasional piano shrills while the latter is powered by thundering kicks before an icier atmosphere tingles its way slowly into the mix by way of Nicholas Noble's trembling vocal demonstration. Two stunning audio adventures; many would argue Bcee has been ahead of "Our Time" for many years...

Crossroads
Ordinary Ways
Review: Two Dutch D&B dynamos for the price of one, the fast-rising Maduk and long-established bass baron Nymfo collide for two sterling examples of laser-leaping 170BPM science. "Crossroads" tips a nod to Netsky with its lush arpeggios and spine-shuddering vocal sample. "Ordinary Ways" is a little deeper thanks to its softened riff that gives the full vocal the space it needs to lead the track. Well-polished and oozing emotion, the only crossroad you'll be facing is working out which track to drop first.

Sick Of It All
Review: Given his status as one of drum and bass's true heavyweights, you'd expect this eighth Calibre full-length to be one of the most hotly anticipated jungle sets of the year. Certainly, it's a fine effort, packed with emotion-rich atmospherics, fizzing rhythms and intricate, occasional beautiful, musical touches. He seems to be at his best when concentrating on musicality, as the delightful "Close To Me', soulful "Wilderness" and summery "Do Not Turn On" prove. There are, of course, rawer moments (see the tech-tinged "Simple Things" and dubstep flex of "Start Again"), but these don't hit nearly as hard as his effortlessly soulful compositions.

Review: Well, here it is, the collab album we've all been waiting for. Drum & bass brothers Nu:Tone and Logistics hit Hospital Records hard with an LP the scene has been crying out for since their first work together a decade ago. A killer combination of Logistic's pure breaks and Nu:Tone's ear for soulful samples, there was little doubt that this album was going to be a huge release for the label, and for Matt and Dan too. Opening with the beautiful haze of lead single "Morning Light", the release heads down different courses to reach various points in the D&B spectrum. The sunshine in "Brown Shoes" is hard to ignore, and interludes like "Escape Pod" are sci-fi journeys into the unknown, an interlude to cast the hard-hitting drama of their follow-up tracks into sharp focus. This is an album as we know and miss them - a piece of work intended to be listened to in one greedy sitting. So find a quiet corner and put those cans on.
