Review: Brian and Roger Eno have their own accomplished legacies in music - Brian as a polymath producer and artist, and Roger as a composer. Now the brothers have pooled their talents into their first collaborative album, Mixing Colours, which has taken shape over a 15 year period. The overall process involved Roger recording piano parts in MIDI to send to his older brother for processing, resulting in a mass of work which they finally whittled down to this exquisite collection. Lovers of both artists will be immensely satisfied, as the fusion of classical piano composition and adventurous ambient electronics merge for an engaging, hypnagogic listening experience.

We Did It (6:59)
Disco Stomp (9:58)
Barney's Moaning (8:34)
GG Is Talking (7:49)
Review: Tireless diggers and world class reissue merchants Mr Bongo have done it again with this one. They discovered The Star Beams when one of their tracks was on a Disco Calypso compilation, then went on a mission to track down the original anymore material from the band, who turned out to be based in South Africa instead of the Carribean. The resulting record is a real gem - disco, funk and jazz all get chewed up and spat out across four fantastically timeless cuts of dance floor dynamite. "Disco Stomp" in particular you might already know as Theo Parrish has been dropping in his sets for time.

James Brown & The Wu Tang Clan - "Sex CREAM" (3:33)
James Brown - "Sex Machine" (dub edit) (3:02)
Review: It would be fair to say that the latest edition in DJ Soopasoul's "Soopastole" edits series is one of the producer's biggest yet. A-side "Sex C.R.E.A.M" is particularly potent, with the mash-up maestro layering the vocals from Wu-Tang Clan classic "C.R.E.A.M" over a chunky beat crafted out of classic James Brown samples. To our ears, it's arguably better than the Wu-Tang original, or at least a little more dancefloor-friendly. Fittingly, Brown gets the treatment on the flip with Soopasoul getting busy with the EQs on a suitably heavy but stripped back "dub edit" of all-time-classic "Sex Machine". While it probably didn't need tampering with, he's done a very good job of delivering a version that successfully takes the track in a different direction.

Box 5ive - "Silicate" (6:39)
Keppel - "Taken For Granted" (6:38)
Henry Greenleaf - "Snide" (4:59)
Formant Value - "Polycausa" (7:03)
Review: Well Street keep up the heat as one of the most inventive labels operating in the liminal space between techno, dub and rhythmic mysticism. These various artist releases are also a perfect introduction to some essential new talent, and that's clear from the off with the snaking, echo chamber pressure of Box 5ive. Keppel's "Taken For Granted" is a distinctive slice of crooked 21st century soul that sports a whiff of early Kimbie / Blake in the vocals and overall attitude. Henry Greenleaf's "Snide" is a taut drum track that teases as much as it delivers, and Formant Value trips out into a meditative soundscape of pattering percussion and spacious atmospherics.

Review: Here it is then. The UK's Cockney wide-boy with a penchant for old school croonerdom - or at least showmanship - delivers his long awaited sixth album, his most anticipated to date and the one that's set to cement him even further as a household name. Like the guy in the sharp, Rat Pack-esque suite you talk to down the local boozer, a guy whose eccentricities are only equaled by his (often volatile) life experiences, 'The Night Chancers' is all about observations of everyday outsiders. In many ways the tracks themselves are relatively formulaic - nobody is re-writing any of the recording rules here. Constant use of female backing vocals accentuating some of the traditional pop roots at play here. Nevertheless, everything is exceptionally well produced, with Dury's dulcet, spoken word storytelling as blunt and uncompromising as it is poetic.

Review: So. Many. Excellent. Names. Here. A quip skip through the sleeve notes to this ex-quisite electronic compilation reveals a wealth of exceptional and innovative produc-tion talent, meaning it's impossible not to stick it straight into the shopping cart without actually needing to hit play. Or at least that's our opinion. Big sell aside, from the opening number by feted Scandinavian ambient-houser Johanna Knutsson, through Karen Gwyer's frenzied acid, Pye Corner Audio's lush proggy one ('I Follow You') and spatial, brooding stuff from Telefon Tel Aviv, there's plenty here to explore and then some. We've yet to mention the ridiculously consistent Freerotation resident Leif, who delivers the warm and complex downtempo 'NQ6', or Gabor Lazar's neo-weightless 'Wubs & Wahs'. Basically, a wonderful cross section of showing where dance music is today, revealing how varied and inter-referential the spectrum has become.

Who Sent You - Ritual (14:47)

Blues Ideology (8:21)
Bread Out Of Stone (4:46)
Review: After the wild revelations of the first Irreversible Entanglements album back in 2017, this vital new force in jazz and beat poetry returns to International Anthem with a new set. Once again the interplay between the players and lyricist Camae Ayewa is electric, not least on the fraught title track. The subject matter weighs heavy but all too familiar - racial tension and inequality in America given an urgent voice by Ayewa, and perfectly accented by Keir Neuringer's saxophone, Aquiles Navarro's trumpet, Luke Stewart's double bass and Tcheser Holmes drums. This is essential stuff, both in message and in sound.

There Is A Space In Between (4:55)
Review: Based in Bristol, UK, experimental musician and vocalist Lucy Gooch is certainly a name to keep an eye on right now. While boasting little by way of discography, this being her debut EP which follows the self released 2018 record, 'Sun', she has all the hallmarks of an established synth-y siren. You heard it here first (possibly). Compris-ing five sumptuous tracks that are pared back but, upon closer inspection, incredibly deep and immersive, elements of Bjork and Imogen Heap are audible in the songs here. Warm notes, sensitive, ethereal vocals and a sense of real passion behind the work itself. The likes of 'Rushing' comes close to a sombre choral mood at times, 'There Is A Space In Between' could stand with the best ambient work, while 'Stalag-mites & Helictites' is a hypnotic journey into the inner mind. Or somewhere near.

I Feel Good (instrumental) (4:18)
Review: The Big Payback series hits third volume and again bangs together classic soul and funk artists with hip hop giants. This JB & The Soul Mates take on Busta Rhymes. They layer up jazz-funk drums and synths into lively arrangements that are topped with sick verses from the master and plenty of James Brown ad libs also colour the groove. It's a high energy party starter, but if you need something a little less busy, the instrumental on the flip has you covered with its big horns and sax lines getting hands in the air.

Review: To say there's something staunchly retro about the second album from this Los Angeles-based outfit would be both accurate (in some ways at least) and slovenly. Yes, there are clear shades of 80s electronic romanticism in this, nuances of New Order audible throughout, but this is a record very much of Moaning's own making, as vivid as it is complex and engrossing. It's not all uptempo business like opener 'Ego', which could score any movie featuring oversized coats and ill-fitting shirts if ever a track could. 'Connect The Dots' feeds on shoegaze, 'What Separates Us' is for Simple Minds followers, and "Say Something', which closes out the LP, is a stadium-filling anthem set to marching band rhythm that manages to pull you into a sort of meditative, trance-like state.

Review: Sasu Ripatti's legendary Vladislav Delay alias has been at the forefront of experimental electronics since the late '90s. While the project shifts in style with every album, the lasting impact of "Multila" looms large over his discography. Originally released on seminal dub techno label Chain Reaction in 2000, Multila gathers together two 12"s that take the emergent dub techno blueprint of the time and disassemble it through a frankly mind-boggling ecosystem of sequencing and processing. The rhythms are frequently slippery, the sonics imbued with a grainy, tactile quality, and the mood is heady and evocative. As beguiling now as it was on release, this is a rightly hailed landmark in electronic music history - collectors and newcomers alike, don't sleep on this one.

Track 3 (6:48)
Review: The Mountain People have a cult status amongst minimal house heads for good reason - their approach feeds the scene's finest parties, but they always retain a certain kink in their tracks that deviates from formulaic genre studies. So it goes on this latest drop on their own label, which leads in with a stunning long form track that packs a nuanced groove into the low end and plays with a limber acid line over the top, holding the filter down low and only opening it up at the choicest of moments. There's also some bouncier, swinging monosynth machine funk to be enjoyed, all executed with originality and subtlety - essential ingredients for the best minimal house.

Review: Reissues don't come more significant than this. Jon Hassell's work new and old has been enjoying plentiful appraisal in recent years, with his outlook on Fourth World music finding fresh relevance with a modern crop of artists. While much of his catalogue has been given a fresh lease of life, they've been saving one of his most seminal works. Vernal Equinox was originally released in 1978, one of Hassell's first albums alongside Earthquake Island. It's essentially the blueprint for outernational music - a heady brew of global signifiers stewing together in one unclassifiable pot marked out only by Hassell's inimitable trumpet style. From ambient heads to sonic explorers, you won't want to miss the chance to own this most precious of albums.

One Itself (5:23)
Review: Here's something of a surprise: an EP from perennial deep house and disco eccentric Maurice Fulton on Peggy Gou's hyped Gudu imprint. The Sheffield-based American joins forces with Gou on A-side "Jigoo", with the pair peppering a squelchy synth bassline and Chicago house style drums with smile-inducing piano riffs and swirling electronics. Fulton reverts to weirdo disco mode on B-side opener "Not Sure I Would", a hard-to-describe number that contains many of his usual aural flourishes (live-sounding drums, bonkers bass, Clavinets, spiraling synth sounds etc), before flitting between African style hand percussion and taut machine drums on fine percussion workout "One Itself".

Review: In 2016 saxophonist and clarinetist Shabaka Hutchings established the "Ancestors" collective of South African musicians to perform live and record debut album "Wisdom Of Elders", a journey into the spiritual and avant-garde side of jazz inspired in part by the struggles of previous generations of black musicians. Four years on, the Sons Of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming member has reassembled the collective for album number two, "We Are Sent Here By History". It treads similar musical territory to its similarly essential predecessor, with Hutchings and his South African collaborators presenting tracks that, in his words, "meditate on the fact of our coming extinction as a species". While the music is nowhere near as doom-laden and miserable as that may suggest - it's very entertaining, thoughtful and spiritually involved - as albums go "We Are Sent Here By History" is certainly hard hitting.

Infader - "Marble Madness" (6:07)
Review: Finland Freshness! Straight Up Breakbeat celebrate the heaviest of homeland hurters with this collection taken from their full compilation. All national badmen, all remarkably forward thinking in their dynamics and uncompromised weight, label boss and Finnish jungle OG Fanu takes the lead with a smoky, slower jazzy cut "Aura Eleven", newcomer HMR keeps the spacious mood going with "Prophecy" where more tidal wave breaks are soften by smoky horns and sci-fi soul. Flip for the ruffage as the mysterious DDOG gets wild on the clattering breakbeats and Infader closes with the most militant track of the record "Marble Madness". What a celebration of homegrown talent. Let's hope this becomes a series.

Review: A couple of years ago French crate digger Charles Bals invited us to "Club Meduse", an imaginary Riviera club where the music was always obscure, European and decidedly mid-80s. Here he opens the doors once more, delivering an open-air friendly soundtrack heavy on rare private press gems, overlooked beauties and the kind of cuts that most would consider Balearic (even if they may have been more popular in Italy and France). Highlights are plentiful, from the eccentric instrumental of Voyage De Charme's fretless bass-powered "Hotel Des Savanes" and the soft-focus, flamenco-tinged bliss of Claude Miss' "Paco Ye Adama", to the sun-kissed jazz-funk/synth-pop fusion of Marc Et Frank's "Cap'tain Coke" and the reggae-zouk quirkiness of Les 36 15's "Zoulous! Far from the bruising techno they normally throw down, "They Can't Be Saved" is an introspective trip into the knotted realms of hip-hop influenced machine music produced down to the nth degree. The beats crunch hard and the atmospheres come shrouded in mystery, slotting in perfectly on the legendary Manchester label Skam. Both a wonderful revival of leftfield electronica and a vital, fresh approach, this third album is another triumphant one. Slap this one on and revel in the sound of two hugely accomplished producers cutting loose and having fun in the studio.

Review: All hail the return of Etapp Kyle. For over 10 years this ever-intriguing producer has been orbiting the Ostgut Ton axis, from Ben Klock's label to Unterton and lastly Ostgut Ton itself back in 2017. After some time away, Kyle is back with a new EP that was wholly worth the wait. "Nolove" is a dreamy, fractured slice of techno abstraction with insanely detailed production chops, while "Unseen" opens things up with some more forthright drums that move like a more linear take on the Shackleton sound. "Polar" thrums and pulses with sound design as much as beats, but the icy atmospheric swirls are the star of the show. "Eden" strips things back with a beautiful, plaintive electronica finisher that keeps percussion to a minimum and focuses on gossamer synth lines to melt away to.

Review: If you're yet to come across Helen Money then now is probably a very good time to rectify that. A background in classical music - and how seriously aficionados of the canon take her - suggests unarguable talent, and her work is proof. Reverence in alternative circles shows how she has never stuck to the path well-trodden, and instead forges ahead on her own terms in pretty much every outing. This is no exception. A maestro on the cello, which leads the charge on this mystifying, brooding and exceptionally cinematic effort, it's incredible just how versatile she makes the instrument sound when you consider your stereotypical thoughts on how it is usually played. Plucked, bowed, reverberated, whatever the approach it offers new depths to the ear, from the chilling 'Coil', which utilises pianos to add a feeling if impending something, to 'Midnight''s melancholia, this is exquisite stuff.

Review: The sci-fi concept adventures of Space Dimension Controller land on planet Dekmantel with more of that honey-coated, harmonious future house that continues to make him such a beloved artist. "Planete Contraire" is full of those plush boogie-tinged leads that SDC has made his name on, but there's also plenty of club-ready mechanics behind the melodies to make this work a treat in the warm up hours of a party. "Synths & An 808" is a much feistier affair with a fat Moog-esque bassline and snappy claps to get you bugging out a treat. A record of two supremely executed halves.

Review: 'Fanfare For Effective Freedom' might be one of the most beguiling things we've heard in quite some time. Opening the scoring on this very impressive outing from Horse Lords, it's a staccato but somehow smooth ode to the beauty of plucked guitars and layered arrangements, acting as a magnificent gateway to what follows. To call this psychedelic would be misleading, it's more likely to fit in with people's ideas of progressive rock combined with a kind of loose indie, but then none of these really hit nails on heads either. Repetitive loops bring about a feeling of hypnosis, tracks like 'People's Park' gathering elements as they move, creating the kind of build usually reserved for electronic dance music. A truly special five-tracker from a band you'd do well to make further investigations into.

The vibe can alter quite drastically release to release, but on Still In My Arms there's a melodic tenderness and preference for delicate beats that makes this oh so pleasant to sink into. Review: Back in the late 1990s French twosome DJ Deep and Julien Jabre released a handful of fine - and now hard to find - EPs as "The Deep". 1997's "The Earth EP" was arguably the strongest of the lot, hence this re-mastered reissue from the on-point Mint Condition camp. Heading up the EP is "Love Your Brother", a fine fusion of swinging, tech-tinged grooves, US garage style organ stabs and effortlessly soulful vocal samples that sounds every bit as far-sighted in 2020 as it did back in the day. Over on the flip you'll find the stripped back and slightly spacey sounding "Love Your Dub" revision, as well as original flipside "Gratiot's Tiger", a slightly woozier and dreamier chunk of deep house/tech-house fusion.

Cinder Cone (Patrick Russell remix) (6:17)
Review: Archivist returns to secondnature for his first release on the label since 2017's Star in a Circle. Cinder Cone EP includes three fiery originals and a remix from Patrick Russell. The record moves from the jagged percussion and train-whistle chords of "Palenque" through the twisted brain dance of the 808 cowbells on "Death Mask" and concludes on a hypnotic note with the two versions of "Cinder Cone". Patrick Russell's remix re-imagines the warping drones of the original with a stepping 170 BPM drum n bass crossover version. The record is a diverse but cohesive club weapon in the hands of the right DJ.

Review: For his first release of 2020 ASC pays homage to mother nature's strongest push-me-pull-you - the "Zenith & Nadir" of the universe... And he does so in the form of a score to a movie that's yet to be made. A smouldering slo-mo analogue weave of synths and drum machines; from the synth-wave subtle triumph of "Anthe" to the unnerving, skin-rippling intro "Cryogenic" to the melancholy finale "The Milankovitch Cycles", he provides the sounds - you create the pictures.
