Review: London-based producer Otik releases his first album Cosmosis on Martyn's label 3024. The 11-track LP signifies the fourth album on the imprint across its ten-year tenure, showcasing a more introspective side to Otik's musical output. The album leans into delicate melodies, hazy atmospheres and lush analogue sounds, often evoking blissed-out feels and ripples of brilliant colour. Produced three years ago during lockdown, Cosmosis comes after a period of spiritual struggles, where Otik questioned his faith, religious beliefs, and the concepts of right and wrong. While the pandemic allowed ample time for reflection, Otik translated these thoughts into music from his Peckham-based studio, later finding a home on 3024's evolving discography. Keen to release a body of work that explores the journey of enlightenment and the struggles to get there, Otik drew inspiration from the luminary filmmaker Terrence Malick and how Malick portrayed ideas and philosophies in films like The Tree of Life and Voyage of Time. As a result, the record conveys a compelling narrative of rebirth, told through exquisite sound design and a push-pull pace that oscillates across the album.

These are four hugely involving and atmospheric tracks steeped in ambiance. 'Ogman' is humid, dusty and spiritual with its late-night bass subtleties and sustained chords. 'Mientra Duermes' (Reimagined) has a celestial melodic feel over ramshackle house drums and 'Monopole' gets heavy on cancerous and dubbed-out drums with more cosmic chord work serve ing to expand your mind. 'Modus Operandi' is a lush and jazzy deep jungle workout to close.

Secondly, "Mouthbreather" has been on all god-fearing neurofunkologist's wishlist for several years and it doesn't disappoint. Review: Re:st continues to be an incredible source of adventurous thinking beyond the structures of drum & bass, and this latest record from Ghost Warrior would be hard pressed to claim an obvious link to the genre. It's more of an experimental jazz offering, using hollowed out notes and whispers of instrumentation, and yet somewhere in the sampling-as-artform process it captures some of the mind-bending magic of Source Direct, Photek et al. Delicate and moody as hell, this is another realm of music opening up and it's one we hope we get to explore deeper on further releases.

Review: Vemodalen means 'The fear that everything has already been done.' If that's not an enticing enough invitation to dBridge's album then we don't know what is. The music as relatable, too. Powerful, slow, sexy and vulnerable, it paints from a synthetic palette anyone over 30 has grown up with and will know intuitively from music and movies. Ranging from poppy motifs that are reminiscent perhaps of Roxy Music or Visage to more introverted electronica that nods at the Rephlex sound and perhaps Si Begg, all backed up by his history as Heartdrive and the Autonomic sound, this is dBridge looking back to look forward. Stunning.

Review: The Nullpunkt label is fast approaching its 25th release but first comes this fearsome outing from F&E. The third installment in the Forschung & Entwicklung series comes on grey vinyl and does not mess about with five more cuts all served up as Antal or Rural versions from 2016. The first rides on rusty jungle breaks, the second, 'Conclusion', is an atmospheric piece with a minimal rhythm and warped synth daubs while 'Six Days' is a dark and heavy piece of ambient techno dystopia. 'Outro' is the lightest and brightest piece of synth work on the EP then 'Research' brings back the jungle techno with more serrated synths and loopy, jagged rhythms.

Review: Come ye and be seated. Let us pray. Longtime bosom buddies Response and Pliskin continue their turbo technique with this skin-singeing four-piece on DMC's Western Lore. It begins with a wholesome gathering in God's house as 'Drug Church' lays down a pulverising and haunting 4/4 sermon. Elsewhere 'Black White Red All Over' continues the marching vibe but with more of a locomotive roll and big emotional pads lapping away over the top. 'Rent Boy' finishes their trio of originals with a turbine 4x4 thrust and more choral voices than a royal funeral and more acid than a 1991 squat party. Throw in a superb tear-up from the unstoppable Tim Reaper and you're 'More Disturbed' than ever. Amen.

Review: To celebrate the 25th birthday of their celebrated debut album, A New Sound Spectacular, the Belgian band has decided to offer-up this selection of long-forgotten remixes of two tracks from the set, '2Wicky' and 'Inhaler', both of which were originally released on now delated 12" singles. The A-side highlight is undoubtedly DJ Pulse's terrifically spacey drum & bass revision of '2Wicky', though the heavy trip-hop psychedelia of the 'Not So Extended Hoovering' version is also surprisingly good. Over on the flip, you'll find two more D&B-inspired takes on 'Inhaler': a wonderfully deep and jazzy 'Mr Pink' revision courtesy of Pierre Job AKA Hector Zazou, and the band's own string-laden 'Drum & Orch' revision.

Review: Razat has made an art form of distortion and saturation. The latter is what lends its name to this new eight-tracker on Saturate. After a fuzzy and textural opener the tumbling and brilliantly fluid rhythms of 'Overdrive' get you to the heart of the dance then 'Clipping' lurches backward and forwards on low-end oscillations and 'Bit Crush' closes the a-side with eye-watering hiss and fizz over crunchy drum slaps. Two further tunes on the flip find Razart manipulating sound and bass in his own unique way with two remixes adding extra bite to an already very useful EP.

Review: This new Formless EP from John Rolodex and Jungle Drummer is anything but. It has sleek and muscular rhythms and precision drum machine gloves that are designed for ultimate dance floor destruction. And isn't that always the way with Metalheadz tunes even now, after so many decades in the game? 'Depth of Field' is the head-snapping opener with its skewed bass and deep space exploration vibe. 'Formless' is then a mad flurry of breaks, flutes and monstrous snares and 'Tentacle' pairs ambient background pads with cruising drum breaks that slot through space. 'Serve No Kings' is a mad drum workout with jazz motifs to die for and sweet tempo mix-ups.

'Back To School' comprises three sonic celebrations of breakbeat culture, homing in on several artists (The 4 Hero-related Tek 9, Goldie's inaugural project Rufige Kru and Stretch & Enjoy) who helped to define the genre before it even became defined as drum & bass proper. Lower-tempo breaks, orchestral stabs, crude FM wobbles, ragga radio samples, resampled rewinds, and soul vocal shouts all make up this happily retro release.

Review: Some of Metalheadz' selective '25 Years Of' anniversary editions have arrived in our mitts, shining a light on some of the best, earliest, and most characteristic drum & bass works by the label's many favourites. On part 9 here, select cuts by Doc Scott and Goldie's own Rufige Kru lay down a twin theme cleanliness and dirtiness respectively, both united by the theme of ghosts. Scott helms up the A with scratchy breaks and a wide void of headroom, emphasising punchiness above all with 'Ghost 25' and its unofficial version. Rufige's two bits, on the B, get much gritter with it - the wendigoes to Scott's banshees.

Review: OK Spirit's latest admirable - and hugely entertaining - release sees label co-founder DJ Neewt join forces with fellow off-kilter club cuts specialists Plead and DJ Slyngshot. Ignore the tongue-in-cheek EP title, because the four tracks on offer are pleasingly wild, weird, intoxicating and packed with brilliant ideas. They hit the mark with opener 'Studio Pressure', a breakbeat-driven hallucinatory trip full of effects-laden electronics, mutant sub-bass and trippy ambient techno melodies, before opting for a much more intergalactic and dubbed-out flex on the SW-esque 'Studio Release'. 'Studio Pleasure' is a rolling chunk of bouncy, hot-stepping techno/bass music fusion, while 'Studio Release' is a manic slab of flute-sporting, shroom-fuelled jungle insanity.

The fourth volume of is widely admired Lobotomy Cuts series is another big one with mind-blowing bass and maximal synths. It is Teddy Killerz who open up on that exact tip with the fizzing energy of 'Ghosts' before Jade's 'TV Says VIP' is a clattering, aggy stepper for the peak time. Review: When breakbeat hardcore and "darkcore" were slowly morphing into jungle around 1992-93, few artists delivered quite as many revolutionary and mind-mangling cuts as Northampton's Foul Play. For proof, check out this must-have retrospective of their earliest EPs on Hypercolour. From start to finish, it bustles with proto-jungle gems, from the mangled rave stabs and boisterous breaks of "Dubbing You" and the warehouse-ready voodoo of "The Alchemist" (a kind of prototype liquid tune which also pays tribute to Nightmares on Wax's earlier "Aftermath"), to the blistering rhythms and bassbin-bothering sub business of "Screwface" and the early ragga-jungle brilliance of "Ragatere".
