Warrior Dance
Cat: CRM 325. Rel: 12 Mar 25
Warrior Dance (9:53)
Warrior Dance (Major League DJz remix) (7:43)
Warrior Dance (Raxon remix) (5:52)
Review: Damian Lazarus and JOJO ABOT's work here is a powerful collaboration that pushes the boundaries of what we expect from the Crosstown Rebels label. On the surface, it's a pulsating dancefloor track, but there's so much more lurking beneath the surface. Built on a foundation of driving rhythms and intricate textures, the track weaves JOJO ABOT's bewitching vocals with hypnotic grooves and subtle amapiano influences, creating something that's both immersive and unpredictable. The Major League Djz remix elevates the energy, turning up the intensity with a deep, groovy progression that feels like it could keep the party going for hours. Meanwhile, Raxon's rework introduces a darker, more atmospheric edge with his signature off-kilter bassline and sharp, rolling percussioniadding depth while still maintaining the track's core essence. Warrior Dance shows Lazarus' unerring ear for talent and his ability to curate soundscapes that speak to both the mind and the feet.

Start Over (7:13)
Start Over (dub) (6:18)
Review: Gorgon City take a break from their 2012-style donk house style a-la Jess Glynne or Clean Bandit, this time opting for a deeper mood while bringing superproducer Damian Lazarus and singer Leia Contois into their orbit. Dreamy and delirious, 'Start Over' opines for better times, with Contois wishing deeply for a memory-erasing do-over. On the B-side, Lazarus and City go Italo-trance, lending even washier lucidity to the whole song.

Vermillion (7:07)
Vermillion (Agoria remix) (6:42)
Vermillion (Jamie Jones Pupkit remix) (6:54)
Vermillion (Deniz Kurtel remix) (5:32)
Review: The legendary Crosstown Rebels - a label that's undergone so many changes and mutations over the years - drops a rather tasty 12" by the one and only Damian Lazarus & The Ancient Moons. "Vermillion" is a wonky and distinctly tribal 4/4 number with seductive pop vocals and a prominent indie feel to its groove. If you were already panicking about a lack of dancefloor debauchery then you needn't worry because there's a tight remix package: Agoria, Jamie Jones and Deniz Kurtel come through to save your dancing feet. Big EP!

Feedback Loop (4:42)
Feedback Loop (Serge Devant remix) (7:24)
Feedback Loop (Bedouin remix) (7:33)
Feedback Loop (Mad Professor Ariwa dub 1) (4:43)
Review: British electronic music veteran Damian Lazarus recently returned with his band project The Ancient Moons for a new full length entitled Heart Of Sky - which combined cosmic world influences with his love for '80s soul and funk artists such as Loose Ends, Luther Vandross, Maze and Gwen Guthrie. The first single is the evocative and heart wrenching slow-burner "Feedback Loop". It also receives a bunch of terrific remixes, which come courtesy of New York City's Serge Devant who delivers a sleek tech-house perspective, Bedouin's remix nails that woozy and esoteric Crosstown Rebels vibe perfectly but best of all is the legendary Mad Professor who delivers his version: the Ariwa dub 1.

Review: Damian Lazarus's fifth studio album is another left-of-centre exploration of house and tech, often with a spiritual twist and hints of voodoo magic. It is heavy on collaborations and finds the Crosstown Rebels boss hooking up with the likes of Hem Cooke for the spine-tingling downtempo opener 'Searchin' while 'R U Dreaming? (feat Mathew Jonson)' is a more deep and bubbly late-night tech sound. 'La Hija De Juan Simon (feat Mestiza)' is laden with percussion and warped bass, and 'Sunrise Generation (feat Fink)' is a deft and progressive melodic roller that is sure to be huge this summer and beyond.

Tomorrow We Can Start Again (3:59)
Review: On this second album from his Ancient Moons project, Damian Lazarus has decided to switch focus. Whereas the outfit's debut album, Message From The Other World, combined global music influences with Lazarus's usual tech-house rhythms and a touch of psychedelia, Heart of Sky is much more heavily influenced by the Crosstown Rebels' chief's rarely discussed soul boy roots. Of course, the beats and basslines still largely stick to the powder house script, it's just that this time they come accompanied by starry-eyed soul vocals, 1960s dream pop influences, bold piano flourishes, gospel choruses and, on rare occasions, smoky trip-hop aesthetics. As a result, it's undoubtedly a much more "human" album, and one with far more crossover potential than its predecessor.

Review: Crosstown Rebels boss Damian Lazarus seems to be mellowing with age - or at least getting more artistically adventurous. This follow-up to his 2009 debut, Smoke The Monster Out, was co-produced by Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford in LA. London and Mexico, with the assistance of an impressive cast of musicians from around the world. While rooted in the kind of tactile house and techno most associated with the evergreen hipster, Message From The Other Side is impressively psychedelic, otherworldly and stargazing in outlook. The album's woozy, horizontal appeal is therefore enhanced by Lazarus and Ford's use of Indian instrumentation, African percussion and impeccable keys-work from American jazz pianist Eric Lewis.

Mario & Vidis - "Kashyyyk"
Review: Globe-trotting techno/house hipster Damian Lazarus invites us to Get Lost again, this time in a surprisingly groovy, touchy-feely mix of contemporary house and techno. There's a distinctly vocal feel to a lot of the selections, with Lazarus interspersing warm, MDMA-inclined songs from the likes of Art Department, Nitin, Left and Dance Disorder (impressively remixed by Massimiliano Pagliara) with quirky and jackin' instrumentals from Dinky (the excellent "Owls"), Daphini and Kowton (whose Bristol house anthem "She Don't Jack" is a definite highlight). Lazarus has his critics, but he usually has his finger on the pulse - and Get Lost 4 is an excellent representation where tech-house, in particular, is at right now.

Dinky - "Owls"

Fosky - "Shiva" (feat Shiva)
Mario & Vidis - "Kashyyk"
Review: Damian Lazarus' 16-track Get Lost mix has been stirring up iPod's at afterparties galore since it release earlier this month - here the Crosstown Rebels honcho releases a sumptuous double vinyl boasting five exclusive tracks from the mix, kicking off with Dinky's "Owls". The Argentinean comes up with a typically minimalesque Latino groove, with some endearing tenderness wedged below the grit. "Japan", from German favourite Acid Pauli, is spacious and hypnotic in his unique amalgamation of cosmic beats, while on the second cut, Brouqade label owner Dana Ruh contributes the suitably hazy "Night Till Dawn". Fosky and Shiva serve up the housiest number of the lot, with punchy vocals, a deep rolling bassline and breaks galore; Mario & Vidis complete the package with the moody and experimental "Kashyyyk".

Su Kramer - "Magic Dance"
Bill Holt - "Program Ten" (part five)
Bill Holt - "Program Ten" (part six)
Review: Crosstown Rebels have enjoyed something of a renaissance in the affections of clubbers this year thanks to a release schedule that has seen old hands like Larry Garnier and Freaks drop new material alongside the new school of house music in Soul Clap, Glimpse and Art Department (though the latter's two members are by no means new to the game). It's a pretty smart move by Fabric then to enlist label boss Damien Lazarus to select the 54th Fabric mix. Your senses lock in from the moment Four Tet's "Love Cry" rises out of the ethereal mist of "Metro Bunker" from Ryan Crosson and stay tuned in till the end. Momentum is slowly built up towards the moment Roska's delightful track "The Sheppard" arrives eight tracks in and Lazarus ups the ante for some heavy raw sounds from Soul Clap Cajmere, Seth Troxler's vampish turn with Art Department and Deetron. This mid point in the mix is a definite highlight, but Lazarus keeps a surprise up his sleeve when nineteen tracks in, the mix drops down a notch into the excellent "Was Dog A Donut" stutter of Su Kramer's "Magic Dance" before ending on the ambient droning weirdness of Bill Holt.
