Review: Sea Horse is a live album by Japanese reed instrument master Akira Miyazawa, together with a later incarnation of his quarrelsome quartet. One of his later 80s works - recorded after his return to jazz following a hiatus in the 1970s - Sea Horse thoroughly blurs hard distinctions between 'live album' and 'studio album', as its reissuer Light In The Attic rightly notes that the listener can barely hear the presence of the audience in the recording - though it is there. A mixture of both standards and originals are heard here, and all are brought together by Miyazawa's masterful saxophone playing, not least for Duke Ellington's 'In A Sentimental Mood', or Miyazawa's own, 'Baby Sea Horse'.

An ancient Neolithic site in Egypt's Nubian Desert predating Stonehenge, Nabta Playa incorporates a stone circle whose lithic configuration aligns with celestial events. Fittingly, then, this clash-of-titans record astrologises celestial electronics and divines ancestral predestinations, sewing a starry sonic tapestry - in Bat Dawid's terms "this is not just an album, it's a constellation". Picking up where Don and David Ornette Cherry left off with 'Bishmillah', and carrying out such further original, summative sonic burial and resurrection rites such as 'Black Stones Of Sirius' and 'Procession Of The Equinox', we hear a dance of featuring flute, clarinet, and vibraphone, and enraptured voice.

A curio of the Venezuelan vanguard, the album was recorded between January 1997-99, and hears the fabled trio of musicians "forget everything" that came before, enlisting the recorded help of every member of the animal kingdom - from mammals to insects - and shooting squarely for a whole new sound-world-order in the process. Sonically flowing between heritage Latin music and minimal electronica, the purpose is to confuse and the effect is indeed confounding, though no less dazzling.

Moses on drums. There is frenetic interplay between all, with loose and swinging keys and real spontaneity resulting in hugely expressive and energetic sounds. Remarkably, the whole album was recorded in just one day in 1962 and brims with rawness and realness.

These roots hold a tight grip; star album cuts 'Transition', 'Affirmation' and 'The Drum' demonstrate a complete, master musicianship, and combine this with studio trickeries of the weirdest and most arcane ilk, making for an unforgettable prog magnolia of minimally treated sound, but still grandly impressive proportions.

Review: The Fishmans are a Japanese band who were very ahead of their time. Formed in 1987, they mixed reggae, dub and psychedelia into their live ensemble. This double album, originally released in 2005, is now available on vinyl for the first time. Standouts include the live version of the shimmering 'A Piece of Future', the spacey lullaby 'Weather Report' and the rocksteady 'Magic Love'. The charm of the band is immediately understood after one listen to this album - one of our favourite Japanese vinyl transfers of the year so far.
