Transition East

Jazz
  1. Transition East (3:25)
  2. No Space For Us (3:44)
Review: Tastemaking US jazz label International Anthem serves up this special 7" from Angel Bat Dawid in response to Emma Warren's 2019 book "Make Some Space", which told the story of London DIY music space Total Refreshment Centre. Featuring clarinets, keys and drum machines, both tracks are hugely conversational, with emotional pain and power ebbing and flowing through both originals pieces. A-side "Transition East" overflows with ideas and narrative while "No Space For Us" is more cautious and subdued, but both leave a lasting impact. The track features Angel with Ben LaMar Gay and Brazilian talents Edbrass Brasil, Romulo Alexis, Tadeu Mascarenhas, Nancy Viegas and Germano Estacio.

Review: Since turning up in the Windy city a few years ago, spiritual jazz singer, clarinetist and composer Angel Bat Dawid has become a stalwart of Chicago's vibrant avant-garde scene. Here he delivers a debut album that should, if there's any justice at least, propel her towards international superstardom. Both her melancholic clarinet lines and distinctive singing feature prominently throughout, alongside sparse percussion, occasional Afro-futurist synthesizer motifs, harp and guitars - all of which Dawid plays herself. It's a virtuoso display that more than confirms her status as one of the spiritual jazz scene's most authentic voices.

Review: While all live albums capture a moment in time, it's not always easy to hear the results of events surrounding their creation in the resultant recording. That's not the case with this recording of Angel Bat Dawid and Tha Brotherhood's performance at JazzFest Berlin 2019, which took place following a series of unfortunate and in some cases discriminatory events. Dawid in particular was furious, and you can hear the pent-up rage and frustration in her energetic vocal and instrumental performances throughout the set. It adds an extra frisson of excitement to a recording rich in freewheeling, life-affirming spiritual jazz, free-jazz and mutant soul-jazz workouts. In a word: exceptional.
