Review: The Mood Mosaic Eleven - Feelin' Funky! is a double album of hardcore funk jams from several different artists. It lasts over an hour in all and in that time you will not be able to sit down or draw for breath. It was originally released in 2007 but still remains relevant for funk lovers. All of these tunes are by the superheroes of the 70s from the rolling funk and big sax licks of the opener from African Music Machine via Tony Camillo's Bazuka's more deep cut and playful 'Dynomite' and plenty in between. For us, Wilmer & The Dudes wins not only for the artist's name but the vibrant, guitar-licked energy of the 'Get It' instrumental.

Review: Time Capsule exposes a few of the myriad pathways in Japan's 70s psychedelic soul wormhole, when a bountiful crop of music emerged from musicians inspired by homespun hero Haruomi Hosono's Happy End project, as well as the meandering ballads emerging from the dissolution of the 1960s protest movements. From the charming, Hosono-esque Francophile lounge funk of Hiroshi Kamayatsu's 'Have You Smoked Gauloise?' to the Tadashi Goino Group's strikingly sparse drum machine n' synth incantation 'Jikan Wo Koero Go Beyond Time', almost sounding like Goino is flanked by Vega and Rev at times, to the theatrical, almost duul-esque closing ballad 'Heya No Naka In The Room', the heads at Time Capsule assemble a compelling and kaleidoscopic anthology of forgotten Japanese gems.

Review: The term Afro-house seems to be getting chukka bout ever more freely and ever less responsibly these days. This second volume of Afro Rhythms from Comet France does have some credible and authentic claims on the term though with source material by Afro beat legend Tony Allen amongst others getting some fine remix treatment. Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer go first with an elastic dub, Jeff Sharel layers in more minimal textures to his remix of Brighter Nights and on the flip is a standout from Ed Banger's Krazy Baldhead which is all tin-pot percussion, shuffling broken rhythms and off grid madness.

Review: Symphonical's The Key To Our Love series has proven exceedingly popular with soul lovers and this third volume shows there is still plenty of mileage in it yet. As always there is an in-depth exploration of black and brown American artists here who are the foundations of the sound. Most of those featured will be obscure to many - but not for long, as their music makes a lasting impression. There is the vulnerable lo-fi sound of Laurene Lavallis's 'Love Don't Change,' Delbert & The Stewart Sensation's sentimental swooner 'How Far Can Our Love Go?' and Carrie Riley & The Fascinations offer up some lovely harmonies on 'Living In A Lonesome House Without You' amongst many other standouts.

As you'd expect given the high number of previous volumes, the selections tend towards the defiantly deep, with more familiar artists being represented by lesser-known treats. So, instead of the much-loved 'Love Me Like That', Reel To Reel offers up the glossier, slap-bass propelled 80s soul of 'Don't Keep Me Hanging On', Cashmere contributes the sweet and tactile 'We Need Love' and GQ drops the eyes-closed lead vocals and horn-heavy peak-time hustle of 'Is It Cool'. Other highlights include Phil Upchruch's Marlena Shaw-sporting 'It's Got To Be You', Linda Clifford's superb 'I Want To Get Away With You' and the squelchy synth-disco of 'Decisions' by Anthony Lockett.

The whole thing is well programmed so that is plays out like a set, too, with everything from soulful melodies to infectious beats. The album spans funk, jazz, reggae, and electronic music that is perfect for parties or playlist additions alike. Review: Five years ago, Sban Records unleashed Harde Smart, a fine collection of Flemish and Dutch records of the 1970s heavily influenced by Black American funk, soul, and dance music. This belated follow-up focuses on the 1980s, a decade in which the influence of American AOR, disco-rock, boogie, synth-pop and electro could be heard across plenty of releases by Dutch and Belgian bands. Highlights include the blue-eyed, synth-powered dreaminess of 'Drugs' by Omar & The New Sound, the P-funk-influenced flavours of Joost Belinfante's 'Zonder Woorden', the Zouk-splashed tropical boogie of De Div's 'Teken De Tijd', and the post-punk new-wave eccentricity of Nadagen's 'Onder 4 Ogen', which sounds like a Dutch take on Sheffield band Chakk.
