Ordinary Joe (reissue)
Cat: SEV 006. Rel: 01 Dec 20
  1. Terry Callier - "Ordinary Joe" (4:14)
  2. Jerry Butler - "Ordinary Joe" (3:26)
Review: On the latest edition of their excellent Soul Essentials series, Outta Sight has decided to bring together two versions of 'Ordinary Joe', a seemingly perennial favourite written by the late, great Terry Callier. His celebrated 1972 recording - all bold, sing-along choruses, organ stabs, jangling piano and lolloping grooves - breezes its way across side A, while Jerry Butler's earlier version, laid to tape in 1970, sits on side B. His version is much more expansive and musically detailed than Callier's take, with superb production from Gamble & Huff and some brilliant orchestral arrangements courtesy of Donny Hathaway. Both versions are, or course, incredible.

I'm In Love (parts 1 & 2) (instrumental)
  1. I'm In Love (part 1 - instrumental)
  2. I'm In Love (part 2 - instrumental)
Review: A lovely new 45 from Detroit funk/hip-hop label Funk Night Records .Rickey Calloway started his music career at the tender age of 13, clowning around in rest periods doing James Brown imitations. It's with the spirit of Brown's backing band The JB's that the Daptone label's house band, The Dap Kings, turn Rickey's vocal track original into a groove led funk set of instrumentals. This version is heavy on the guitar licks with smatterings of bongo percussion, smouldering Hammond organ and punchy brass stabs without the confines of vocals. Highly recommended.

  1. Hot Lovin' (Don't Stop, Don't Quit) (3:39)
  2. Shack Attack (3:20)
Review: More from the cheeky scamps behind the Disco Bits label, an imprint whose releases regularly blur the boundaries between re-editing, re-making and remixing. Here they welcome back imprint regulars Cannon & Mirrorball (we laughed, at least), who once again serve up two guaranteed disco floor-slayers. A-side 'Hot Lovin (Don't Stop, Don't Quit)' sits somewhere between disco-house and hip-house, with excitement-building raps lifted from vintage hip-hop cuts sitting atop a non-stop beat crafted from tooled-up elements from a celebratory disco favourite. As the title suggests, 'Shack Attack' cheekily blends elements from Banbarra classic 'Shack Up' and B-52s hit 'Love Shack', adding some other choice samples to create a tidy, well-made mash-up that sounds tailor-made for disco dancefloors.

Review: Late 70s funk fusion from Tunisia: capturing the moment leading Tunis bands Dalton and Marhaba Band joined forces for some legendary disco fusion. "Alech" ignites with a Doobie Brothers style shiny guitar, big slap bass and soaring synth work while "Hanen" is a little more introspective and soulful with its honeyed harmonies and cascading chord sequence. Complete with instrumentals.

Cat: 55442 P. Rel: 05 Dec 18

  2. Stoned Out Of My Mind (2:58)
Review: This reissue of American R&B/soul vocal group The Chi-Lites' "Are You My Woman?" (Tell Me So) from 1970 features a very familiar hook that was sampled on Beyonce and Jay Z's 2003 hit "Crazy In Love". Formed in 1959 in Chicago, Illinois, the group was led by Eugene Record and originally called Hi-Lites before adding on 'Chi', which derived from their hometown. They went on to release 15 albums between 1969 - 1990 and are best known for their classics "Have You Seen Her" and "Oh Girl".

Review: Here comes the first single from the upcoming Chico Mann album "Double Life". The acclaimed producer and guitarist is back with his first work since 2013, and is in fine fettle. Once again finding new ways to collide hard rock and West African funk, first up is 'Come Inside', which has been a firm favourite in his live shows and is a collaboration with bassist JP Maramba that's full of fierce energy. Reeves it and you'll get a psyched out cover of Fela Kuti's 'Sorrow Tears & Blood' with a hooky groovy and powerful underlying message.

She's Just That Type Of Girl
  1. She's Just That Type Of Girl (3:15)

  3. Under Pressure (4:18)
Review: Electro Wayne's mid 80s-focused Circuitry project get busy on Peoples Potential Unlimited with two starlit synth boogie originals; "She's Just That Type Of Girl" is a playful east coast funk flex with a slight freestyle touch to it. Harmonies, light touches on the keys and exceptional drum production, it's a sassy slice that will warm-up any floor. "Under Pressure" lowers the tempo but thrusts up the sensual urgency with great percussion and come-to-bed spoken word. Authentically done.

Cat: BGPS 046. Rel: 27 Mar 15
  1. Don't You Care (2:47)
  2. Never Did I Stop Loving You (2:32)
Review: Two powerful soul sessions from Alice Clark's eponymous debut 1972 album. "Don't You Care" is a hard-hitting soul standard (that became very popular in acid jazz scene in the early 90s) where Alice opens her heart for all to see while her incredible band ebb and flow with Clark's emotions. "Never Did I Stop Loving You", meanwhile, languishes in sentiment at a slightly lower tempo that allows her to really dig deep for those low notes. The real fun happens as we reach momentum towards the end and every band member brings out their A-game and bounces off each other - backing up Alice every step of the way. You will care about this.

Never Did I Stop Loving You

  1. Never Did I Stop Loving You (Ryuhei The Man 45 edit) (2:47)
  2. Hard Hard Promises (LP version) (3:06)
Review: Ryuhei The Man and Ultra VYbe Records have been mining Alice Clark's sought-after, self-titled 1972 debut album, chiselling off gems to re-edit and reissue. They've already delivered one seven-inch and here offer-up a second, which is as predictably as essential as its predecessor. On the A-side Ryuhei takes his razor-sharp scalpel to 'Never Did I Stop Loving You', a bustling, sweet and effervescent chunk of soul-jazz brilliance full of big band horns, impassioned lead vocals and killer grooves. The edit itself is of the "soft-touch" variety, with the Japanese DJ/producer choosing to subtle extend small sections to avoid an over-loopy sound. Over on the B-side there's a chance to savour Clark's original version of 'Hard Hard Promises', an energetic affair that remains one of the long-overlooked artist's most up-tempo recordings.

Don't You Care
Cat: OTS 231. Rel: 19 Jan 21
  1. Don't You Care (Ryuhei The Man 45 edit) (3:10)
  2. Hey Girl (LP version) (3:23)
Review: In 2020, Ryuhei The Man seemed to be on a one-man quest to re-edit every rare old soul, jazz-funk and disco gem around. His quest clearly didn't end on December 31st though because he's at it again, this time working his scalpel magic on Alice Clark's 1972 gem 'Don't You Care'- a record that has long been hugely popular on the rare groove circuit. His edit is typically reverential, using little more than extensions of key instrumental passages - most notably a previously brief drum break - to heighten the funk-fuelled soul track's dancefloor impact. Turn to the flip and there's a chance to savour 'Hey Girl', a more jazz-funk and big band jazz flavoured affair that first featured on the very same hard-to-find album as 'Don't You Care'.

Atmosphere Strut
Cat: P 111. Rel: 02 Oct 20
  1. Atmosphere Strut (12" club mix) (9:21)
  2. Atmosphere Strut (Kon's Fly Away edit) (8:38)
Review: Patrick Adams was responsible for producing tons of terrific disco records during the late 1970s and early '80s, but few are quite as dizzyingly good as Cloud One's 1976 cut 'Atmosphere Strut'. Created by Adams with the assistance of regular collaborator Peter Brown, the 9-minute plus track is notable for the extensive use of superbly spacey synthesizer lines, an infectious deep disco groove and a typically head-in-the-clouds lead vocal from Margo Williams. This reissue naturally offers-up Adams' original, must-have 12" club mix, but also a brand-new re-edit from disco rework specialist KON. He lengthens the intro, beefs up the bass and makes crafty use of some improvised vocals from Adams and Williams that were previously buried on the multi-track master tapes.

  1. Combo Guarajeo - "Alamo" (2:08)
  2. Hermanos Vargas - "Oye Mulata" (3:23)
Review: For their latest release, Mexican reissue specialists Discodelic take us back to Alajuela, Costa Rica, in the mid 1970s, and the sweltering, cross-cultural fusion works of the Vargas brothers and their short-loved Combo Guarajeo. Our pick of an extremely strong pair is A-side 'Alamo', a sweet and jangling take on Latin funk blended with distinctive Guaguanco and psychedelic soul influences. It's humid, colourful and classy, and original copies of the record it first featured on are almost impossible to find. There's a more straightforward, central American take on Afro-Cuban music on side B, which we think - but have yet to confirm - has never previously been released. It, too, is a treat for the ears.

  1. The Assembly Line (5:01)
  2. Gonna Blow Your Mind (5:29)
Review: Remarkably, the Commodores 'Assembly Line' has never before featured on a 7" single - officially, at least - despite the track's killer drum-break being a long-time favourite of B-boys and B-girls. Helpfully Dynamite Cuts has decided to offer-up this fully licensed "45" pressing, backing the superb, life-affirming and organ-heavy funk-soul cut with another track from the band's 1974 album Machine Gun. 'Gonna Blow Your Mind' is an even heavier, weightier and more floor-friendly affair, with the legendary Motown combo adding energetic vocals, crunchy Clavinet lines and spacey synthesizer sounds to a super-heavy, Blaxploitation funk style groove. In a word: essential!

  1. Once I've Been There (extended Promo version) (5:50)
  2. Captain Connors (unreleased extended mix) (7:23)
Review: Norman Connors was a 'go to' producer in the 1970s and '80s for soul and jazz, while holding it down on an impressive array of solo albums. Connors is a drummer first and foremost, and across his rhythm-focussed recordings were the introduction of singers who went on to have their own individual careers such as Jean Carn, Phyllis Hyman and the exceptional Phillip Mitchel - who features on A side 'Once I've Been There'. Flipside track 'Captain Connors' comes as a 12" mix made in 1977 but never released before on vinyl! Previously, the title track was only ever on a promotional release, often changing hands at over 100 quid a time - demand is high on this special release on the original imprint, cop it while you can!

  1. Mind Made Up (feat Kylie Auldist)
  2. Losin' Streak (feat Daniel Merriweather)
Review: Two big cuts taken from the Melbourne trio's sixth album Blind Bet, here the band flip two sides of a ridiculously funky coin. "Mind Made Up" features the vocals of Tru Thoughts starlet Kylie Auldist. Her rich emphatic vocals fit the 70s soul licks perfectly. Smooth and dynamically delivered with big horns, subtle strings, major chords and an instantly catchy chorus, you'll make your mind up on this long before the last horns blast a final cheerio. "Skeletor", meanwhile, is a much more party-focussed jam where big breakbeats provide the back bone for sharp horns, heavy Hammond slapping and warm gravelly vocals.

Review: Dreamy mid '70s funk from Caribbean (St Maarten to be precise) trio Cool Creations: "Wish Upon Love" struts with a Boz Scaggs-style confidence and a deep, cloudy finish that would make Faze-O proud. Flip for a straight-up cloud burst as "Night On Beach Island" lives up to its name with measured pace, cosmic trumpets, sandy pianos and lavish, lolloping wave-lapping double bass. Beautiful.

  1. Andy Cooper - "Why You Buggin'" (feat The Allergies) (3:14)
  2. Dr Syntax/Pete Cannon - "Downtime" (The Allergies remix) (3:27)
Review: More all-action fare from the popular Bomb Strikes label, an imprint that has gradually moved away from the party-hearty mash-ups and bootleg remixes on which it made its name. This tidy seven-inch single is notable for the presence of Bristol crew The Allergies. On the A-side they guest on Andy Cooper's "Why You Buggin", a bustling, funk-fuelled fusion of hip-hop and rock that sounds like a wholehearted tribute to the Beastie Boys circa "Licensed To Ill". Over on the flip the West Country party-starters turn remixers, delivering a head nodding, toe-tapping take on Dr Syntax and Pete Canon's hip-hop/funk/ska fusion number "Downtime". Like the A-side, it sounds like a bona fide dancefloor bomb.

  1. Tangerine Dreams (3:15)
  2. Two Mile Hill (3:09)
Review: Straight out of Bristol comes a brand-new label from Tom Friend, the avuncular vinyl obsessive behind the Friendly Records store and bar. The inaugural release on Friendly Recordings fittingly comes from a local talent, promising newcomer Claude Cooper. What's on offer very much taps into Bristol's post-punk history, with excellent A-side 'Tangerine Dreams' sounding like the sax-wielding mutant offspring of Rip, Rig & Panic and Maximum Joy - all bold, rubbery double bass, frenetic breakbeats and delay-laden horn solos. B-side 'Two Mile Hill', which was named in honour of a road in Bristol near Cooper's house, offers an extra-percussive and moodier variation on a similar theme. In a word: terrific!

Review: For the second salvo on Cornhusker Records, the publicity-shy crew is treating us to a quartet of re-edits starting impressively with "Easily", a floor-focused rearrangement of a slap bass, woodblock and sax-heavy chunk of jazz-funk goodness, before turning a jaunty Mizell Brothers cut into a rolling house groover. The fun continues on side B, where the sweaty percussive Hammond funk of "Launchpad" is followed by head-in-the-clouds delight "Bring It", a subtle scalpel rework of a Clavinet-sporting Blaxploitation era disco-funk workout. Given the variety and quality on show, this has the feel of a record that might stay in your "playing out" box for a while.

  1. Les Oiseaux Morts (3:08)
  2. Back To Life (2:51)
Review: This is a first ever reissue for this lovely little jazz 7", which first landed in 1976. It was recorded just after French jazz fusion group Cortex's iconic Troupeau Bleu LP and is awash with gentle drum tumbles, twinkling keys and sustained strong sounds that bring a golden touch. The female vocal harmonies are a perfect counter for the male spoken words and the whole thing really tugs at the heart. Flip it over and there is the much more upbeat 'Back to Life' with its busy harmonica, funky drumming and rippling Rhodes work. Fantastic stuff.
