A day spent jamming in the studio with close friend of the band and regular vocal collaborator, Denise Johnson, the recordings here and on the pair still to come represent the work they did that day, shortly before the world lost the woman in question forever.
Passing away in July 2020, well before her time, this is ACR paying tribute to another integral part of the Manchester music Factory. From the hypnotic and woozy 'Wonderland', where Donna Summer meets acid jazz, to the more straight-laced disco material - delivered with an edge you'd expect in terms of instrumentation and vocals - EPA is a fitting way to honour her legacy.

Review: Following an impressive, low-key cassette release on Kitty Play in 2016, Amsterdam-based artist Aan Zee makes the leap to vinyl with this appearance on Pleasure Wave, a label which has already made some waves with releases from g-Marie, Jonny 5 and Miskotom. The Aan Zee sound is a lot to digest, spanning all kinds of cosmic funk, sky-scraping electronics and outernational influences, often all fired off at the same time. Just sink your teeth into "Persona/Funny Berber" for a taste and you'll understand. Review: Emotional Rescue's trilogy of obscure reggae-disco reissues comes to a close with another killer, this time from former Studio One session man Richard Ace. Those with a passion for the genre will no doubt already know Ace's cheery 1979 cover of "Stayin' Alive". "Jones Town Massacre", though, is arguably even more potent; a rolling, floor-friendly cover of a Prince Tony number full of punchy, rum-soaked horns, jangling pianos, rolling beats and a killer bassline. As with the previous titles in the series, the flipside features an extended contemporary re-edit, with in-house crew Apophenia (AKA boss Stuart 'Chuggy' Leath and Soft Rocks' Piers Harrison) emphasizing the killer groove in a tough, dubwise style.

Review: Addmoro were a lesser known Los Angeles-based disco outfit active throughout the late 70s and early 80s, and their sound was unique for its ahead-of-its-time weight and phonk, not to mention a difficult-to-match versatility, both traits evidenced by this Kalita reissue of the obscurity 'Rock & Roll Skate' here, first released on their very own Addmoro Records. The titular A-sider and 'Keep On Tryin' were released originally in 1985, with the former coming as a ploddy but groovy hard-hitter - which could've easily predicted the reams of modern-day producers who would the style on for size decades later (but not quite achieve it so well) - and the latter a surprise-taking curveball in a stumbly-funky, disco-electro mood.

Review: Adelle First luckily came up in the late '80s to early '90s tradition of cut-up house. 'Don't Give Up' is her defining moment; a precious South African disco piece that is unusually sensitive and detailed in disposition, and which features a brilliant dub mix on the B, that shows off every production aspect of this tried but true style with a startling sense of intricacy. First released in 1986, the flair of producer Tom Mkhize together with First's lolling vocals is once more put on display on this 2022 reissue.

Review: Whereas most record label prefer to revel in the idea of the finished project, a smaller cohort still prefers to play up the idea of the cutting room floor, the dubplate, the manuscript, the demo. Whilst dubstep might've revived the dubplates trend for a more contemporary listener, US imprint Disco Dub Demos (how apt) know all too well that of the earliest forms of this "rawness fetishism" in music emerged from disco. Here the label-born moniker African Duplate lays down four ultra-utilitarian tools that shoot squarely for the essence of - they name it - 'Afro Disco'. On the B-side also comes a worthy, somewhat haunting flip track, 'Come On & Groove It'.

Review: Something a little different from G.A.M.M here, as Parisian DJ Afshin joins forces with the mysterious Kiss My Black Jazz to offer up two incendiary edits. The real surprise killer is A-side "Trouble In My Way", which subtly turns a blues-era recording of a traditional slave sing-along into a handclap-heavy chunk of infectious gospel-house brilliance. It takes a little time to build up, but when the heavier beats drop midway through you'll have dancers eating out of the palm of your hand. Flipside "The Riot" sees them make merry with a Hammond-heavy chunk of 1960s jazz-funk, extending and reworking the cut to make it suitably sweaty, heavy and life affirming.

Review: Earlier in the month, Parisian producer Afshin joined forces with Kiss My Black Jazz and served up a brilliant, two-track missive of jazz-funk and blues-house reworks on G.A.M.M. Here they reunite for round two. This time round, they begin by reworking a shuffling, chant-along Afro-Brazilian gem of unknown origin, extending the carnival-ready percussive intro before unleashing the shuffling, sun-kissed samba rhythm and some of the sweetest vocals this side of a sing-along in a chocolate factory. Over on side B they give a similar tune to a killer chunk of reggae-funk fusion rich in warm dub bass, bongo-laden beats, bluesy guitar solos, fuzzy horns and James Brown style guttural vocals.

Review: Yasuko Agawa's 'L.A Nights', a glossy 1986 single inspired by Light of the World's earlier dancefloor hit 'London Town', has long been regarded as a Japanese 'city pop' classic. It was also a big favourite amongst dancers on the UK's jazz-funk and soul scenes - thanks to a British issue on Bluebird - during the period, too, making this reissue extra appealing. Excitingly, this edition leads with a previously unreleased extended mix that wonderfully stretches out the tactile, laidback, synth-sporting jazz-funk number. The bassline, vibraphone solos and lead vocal from Agawa - sounding more like a Black American jazz singer than a Japanese popstar - are all superb. It comes backed by two fine B-sides: the classic, late-night vocal jazz of 'But Beautiful' and the stirring, up-tempo 'New York Afternoon'.
