A Tribute To Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers
Cat: 574439 4. Rel: 18 May 17
Moanin' (4:59)
Night In Tunisia (6:03)
Politely (6:38)
The Drum Thunder Suite (6:43)
Review: Those who've studied Tony Allen's distinctive drumming style often cite Art Blakey as an influence, so it's little surprise to find him paying tribute to the legendary jazz drummer on this superb album. Joined by his regular band, Allen covers a quartet of tracks written and recorded by Blakey and his band, the Jazz Messengers. The results are predictably impressive, with Allen's loose and polyrhythmic percussion providing a rock solid foundation for the horns, piano and double bass that sits atop. It's naturally closer to all-out jazz than to Afrobeat, but still bristles with the kind of punchy horns and life-affirming playing that characterizes Allen's work. "Thunder Suite", in which Allen drops a number of sweaty drum solos, is particularly potent.

Red - "The Nuts" (original mix)
Homecut - "Time Difference" (feat J-Live - Marc Mac remix)
Kidkanevil - "Good Morning, What's New?" (feat Andreya Triana - Capstone re-version)
Review: Ten years deep, First Word showcase just how timeless their output has been by exploring their vaults and repurposing some of their finest classics 10" re-releases. Never press to vinyl before, each of these cuts surges at the very forefront of hip-hop, funk and world music. Each track is a highlight; "African Kings" is quintessential Afrofunk laced with warm keys and undeniable groove infection, "The Nuts" is futuristic homage to Danny Breaks, Marc Mac conjures the spirit of the Steve Miller Band on his Homecut remix and the Capstone remix of the Andreya Triana-fronted "Good Morning What's New?" is a drum-heavy jazz daydream you'll never want to awake from. Here's to another 10 years!

When The Funk Rains Down (Lowrider version)
Review: Known for their work in Los Charly's Orchestra, North London pairing Juan Laya & Jorge Montiel introduce their new project The Boogie Man and ask what are you going to do when the funk rains down? Led by the vocal talents of frontman Andre Espeut and featuring a trombone player amusingly called Tony Trombony, The Boogie Man promise much for the contemporary funk scene of the basis of this debut release for the Imagenes Recordings label. In original form "When The Funk Rains Down" is tight and groove heavy, whilst the B Side Lowrider version is low slung and looser in execution.

Faith (3:49)
Faith (dub) (3:49)
Review: On his previous releases as Booker Gee, Guillaume Metenier has employed his immaculate organ-playing skills over a range of killer funk and soul grooves. Here he flips the script, delivering atmospheric, fluid Hammond solos over some dub-wise reggae grooves played and produced by Spanish multi-instrumentalist Lone Ark (real name Roberto Sanchez). Both Metenier and Sanchez are in fine form on opener 'Auxmites', a bass-heavy head-nodder that sounds like Lee 'Scratch' Perry producing Jimmy Smith. 'Faith' is a little sunnier and warmer, with Metenier's solos working in perfect unison with Sanchez's glistening guitars, jangling pianos and skanking rhythm. Both cuts come accompanied by pleasingly spaced-out Dub revisions courtesy of Sanchez. Top stuff!

Tom Browne - "Brighter Tomorrow" (feat Carol Woods) (6:12)
Diplomats Of Soul - "Brighter Tomorrow" (feat Incognito & Imaani) (5:53)
Review: Expansion's offshoot label is back with a second release and for the occasion have put together a special eco vinyl 10" here that is strictly limited to just 100 copies and is fully deserving of that treatment: Tom Browne Feat. Carol Woods combined to great effect in the 80s on this soul classic that now gets a first-ever single release. It's the sort of immediately heartwarming tune that draws from soul, jazz funk, disco and more to cook up a steamy and excellent groove. On the flip is Diplomats Of Soul with their own super cover of 'Brighter Tomorrow' featuring Brit funk and acid jazz greats Incognito & Imaani.

You Can't Fight (original remastered version)
You Can't Fight (Riccio rerub)
Review: Fans of classic film will be all over this reissue. Jimmy Chambers' "You Can't Fight It" was written for John Carpenter's brilliant soundtrack to his classic 1976 horror flick Assault On Precinct 13. However the song only ever made it into the Italian edition of the film for some reason, despite it being a genius blend of Chambers' soulful vocals, parping funk horns, synthesizer motifs and delay-laden beats. This reissue is timely - it was only ever issued on 7" in the late 70's - and comes backed with a superb rework from Italian producer Riccio. He wisely emphasizes Carpenter's synth work and the snappy but dubwise beats, layering those horns and Chambers' brilliant vocal atop. Stellar stuff.

Bembe Segue - "Mother Of The Future" (live version)
Review: Serious jazz dance fusion from 1974, Norman Connors' cover of Carlos Garnett's "Mother Of The Future" drives with shamanistic fury before the firing keys, heaving horns and deep soul vocals fly into the mix. For a more contemporary jazz take, flip for Bembe Segue's emphatic live version. Lavished with her distinctively rich vocals and stern spoken word and complete with wild bass runs and a thick bed of percussion, it's an instant show-stopper. Two incredible covers, one special 10".

Review: Nu Mark's been teasing his fans since May, releasing selected cuts from his new album Broken Sunlight in coloured vinyl 10" instalments. With the attention reaching fever pitch, he's unleashed one of the biggest cuts on the LP. Hooking up with the dollar-hungry Aloe Blacc, it's a horn-heaving slice of hip-hop funk that pushes all the right buttons. "Tough Break" is a double-time deal sealer. Groovin' (2022 version) (6:53)
Sweet Love (2022 version) (5:58)
Back Again (5:24)
U (5:30)
Review: Throughout his career, DJ S has delivered a steady stream of slow-motion re-edits, so it's no surprise to find the former Chopshop contributor pop up on Too Slow To Disco's popular edit series. The four reworks on show are naturally tasteful, classily produced, largely free of the kind of quantized extra beats employed by lesser-quality editors. The Greek scalpel fiend starts by offering his version of a much-loved downtempo disco classic, wisely extending the original version's instrumental passages before introducing the lead vocal ('Groovin'), before dipping the tempo further on the seductive is-it-soul-or-is-it-disco brilliance of 'Sweet Love'. 'Back Again' is a languid chunk of sun-splashed slow motion disco rich in jazzy guitar licks and meandering sax solos, while 'U' is a glassy-eyed, loved-up treat.

They've put out some fine albums since 2016, most recently 2020's A Funky Bad Time, while this tidy Pressure 10" is their first outing of 2021. By The Time I Get To Phoenix (feat Lee Fields)
Review: It's been five years since Truth & Soul's octet gave us the incredible Wu Tang version album. It's been two years since they last dropped a single, too. However the band is back and their trademark cinematic soul is richer and more emotive than ever. From the instant the trembling flute and guitar open with the cuddly, ultimately positive "Kiddy Ditty" we're whisked on a largely instrumental journey that flings us through the wild west ("Little House"), soul's early JB chapters ("This Song For You") and straight up NY low-slung funk ("A Little Sloppy"). Climaxing with a Lee Fields featured "By The Time I Get To Phoenix", Loose Change is a kind reminder of just how accomplished and creative El Michels Affair are. No change there, then.

Max Graef - "Das Brett"
Review: Australian label Melbourne Deep Cast return! Originally released as part of this year's Record Store Day activities, this Snooze For Days 10" from Melbourne's finest deep house operators is now widely available and features cuts from the Man Fantastique, Andy Hart and Max Graef. Each has supplied some excellent beat down edits of material that some might recognize and others won't; Fantastic Man's slow burning "Paradise" for example is based around a devilishly pitched down vocal of a late 90s neo soul classic that only really comes apparent when the "yeah you might laugh" refrain comes looping into focus. Andy Hart is on straight up discofunk sleaze form with "My Queen" whilst Max Graef cranks up the dust on "Das Brett" which has the best double bass manipulation since Roni Size's "Brown Paper Bag".

Review: Joana features two cuts of firing funana from one of Belgium's finest, Funky Bompa, on a rather dashing 10". The title track is a turbo charged funk jam complete with boogie bass, heavily squeezed accordion action and fills so vibrant they'd make a rainbow blush. Flip for "Xintado Na Praca", a cover version of Cape Verde legends Bulimundo which transforms the original into a fusion of spiralling, almost Celtic, folk and stomping African beats and results in what can only be described as a loopy organic techno experience. Review: A really cool concept from Expansion here; one side is a reissued seminal classic, the other is a contemporary version. And what a way to start the start the series; hard bop hero Johnny Hammond influenced pretty much every soul, jazz, rare groove and funk artist who've followed in his path, and the joyously unpredictable "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" is one of his best. Review: Mayer Hawthorne's debut release hears a faithful reissue via Stones Throw. 'Just Ain't Gonna Work Out' was first released in 2008 as the first forerunner to the LP A Strange Arrangement, which was released the following year. Housed on a distinctively oblong, heart-shaped, red 7", the star track hears Hawthorne segue uncertainly from serenade to breakup song, and we're treated to his trademark croaky falsetto too; too nice to pass up. B-sider 'When I Said Goodbye' is a haunting soul reminiscence, giving barbershop harmonies laid down by a ghostly troupe, amid talk of shattered wills and wistful post-breakup apologies.

Review: This is the first vinyl offering from Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, an eight-piece with Chicago roots and a current base in New York City. Seven members of the band are brothers - they're the sons of Sun Ra Arkestra member/AACM co-founder Kelan Phil Cohran. The band makes good on that legacy with original compositions that are by turns mystical, emotionally complex tonal meditations and up rocking high octane badass brass roof burners. Having studied with their father from a young age the brothers have been playing together most of their lives, but it wasn't until 1999 that they came together as Hypnotic.

Review: It was 1975 that KC and The Sunshine Band first put out their huge "I Get Lifted" tune, and its a prime example of the era's funk and disco fusion sound. The playful bass wobbles down low while the elastic vocals do plenty of tricks up top. Signed to EMI's Pathe imprint, he released three singles during his career which have all since faded to obscurity. Until now. Dusty, garagey and steaming with raw blues fusion, it's hard to deny any parallels to Hendrix as Mawi expresses himself with a rough heartfelt frenzy. The fact that Damon Albarn, Flea and Tony Allen are in fact responsible pleasingly makes no odds when it comes to enjoying these three tasters from the album. There's a strong focus on keeping the recording raw and live, as Allen's drums sit tangibly close in the mix while while Flea's bass lines are pointedly simplistic compared to the flair for which he's known. A bass-driven jass fusion storm, it sent dancers into a frenzy, tending fast down a psychedelic jazz mountain. A staple of BBE's J Jazz compilation, 'Merry-Go-Round' was Paul Murphy's top pick for a fresh rework, heard here from Niknak. Rising to the challenge, Takumi assembled top-tier musicians to craft an electrifying tribute; eight minutes of unrelenting, steam-hammer funk, pushing jazz dance energy to its limits.

Review: TC.KYLIE x The Hourglass deliver a dynamic jazz fusion outing here that mixes up Hong Kong, Japanese, and British cultures in a top debut album. Jazz fusion pianist Kylie leads her band with great energy while playing keyboard and synth keytar that is a little reminiscent of Japanese jazz rock. Based in Hong Kong and London, she's inspired by Shaun Martin, Robert Glasper and Japanese acid jazz groups like Fox Capture Plan and Jabberloop and that shows in these sounds. They are bright, happy and uplifting with the majestic flute leads of 'Merry-go-round Of Life ' impossible not to fill you with excitement and joy.

Review: Three-piece funkers Tokyo Groove Jyoshi formed in 2018, and between them Emi Kanazashi, MiMi and Rina Hoshino know how to lay down some serious grooves. Linking up with the Vintage Vinyl HK label (formerly based in Hong Kong, now in Scotland), they present a killer two-track single uniquely lathe cut on an 8" and limited to 100 copies. 'Rise Up' is a sweet instrumental joint with oodles of organ goodness and a springy beat for those uptempo, jazzy moments in your day. By way of contrast 'Foxy' gets down low, leaning in on mellow Rhodes licks and a sumptuous bassline, letting a little vocal magic into the mix, providing the perfect smoky foil to the A side jollities.

Review: Afrobeat alert right here, for even the most cynical of Fela believers - no lie! Trombonist Toli Nameless leads this magnificent EP, out through the fledgling Kooyman Records, in what is actually a sort of reissue... or rather an unearthing of some pretty special material that was recorded in the NYC area around about 2003. In what was a series of infamous live performances back then, these recordings has gained fame in the underground name and so this must be a rather special event for anyone whose been longing for their mystical charm until now. "See Line" is the most energetic of the trio, all guns blazing on the percussion front and vocal voodoo, while "Talk Da Shit" provides your more typical Afro funk, except that its way sexier thanks to Toli's brass vibes. The instrumental dub to "Def Ears", however, is the more special of the three and the one to bring out that lovely, heartical bounce that we all yearn for. A magnificent EP. Highly recommended!

Review: Germany's rare groove, funk and soul specialists Tramp reissue more golden grooves here with a fine bunch of untitled but unmissable new tunes across two sides of hand numbered vinyl. Review: Not to be confused the Mancunian duo of the same name (RIP Electric Chair), the UBs aka Yeahman and The Undercover Brother dig deep into the archives of legendary funkateer Kenny Smith. Across this neat ten inch the duo present trademark Melody and Instrumental versions of two Smith classics. The A Side brings the soft funk rock vibes to "Everyone Knows I Love You", the Northern Soul gem Kenny made for the Kogan imprint, with the brassy leanings of the second version quite delightful. Break diggers will be licking their fingers at the raw materials on offer with "Think All About Number" a heavily vibing funker filled with plenty of brass and organ attitude.

Young Folks
Review: The Williamsberg Salsa Orchestra here present two cheeky covers in the vein of the Hackney Colliery Band's massive 7" releases which have proved so popular. On the A-side the group offer an infectious brass rendition of TV On The Radio's "Wolf Like Me", combined with salsa percussion and powerful vocals, whilst the B-Side contains an imaginative version of Peter, Bjorn & John's "Young Folks", with the guitars replaced with Latin piano and clattering percussion. Despite the lack of the famous whistling, their cover somehow manages to breathe new life into a ubiquitous classic. Highly recommended!

Review: Some 25 killer library music cuts by the German film music maestro Peter Thomas, on audiophile pressing, in a deluxe 2×10? set. Uber-rare, never-before-released material spanning 1968-1976 - and sourced from Thomas' personal reel-to-reel tape archive - this bombastic instrumental set spans a whole range of quirky overseen by the composer himself, documenting an approach to composition that essentially augurs electronic music production as we know it today. Prolific in scope, the 25 pieces here rival the sheerly industrious proliferations of many of today's artists, and even outstrips them in quantitative ambition; but then again, what less might one expect from a soundtrack artist by trade, whose work spanned over 600 films? Best of this bunch have to be 'Meeting Palermo', whose brushes revel in a beaucoup frisson, and 'Astral Snow' - a whacked-out absurdist electro-disco frazzler for the most frenetic out there. This one also comes with four recently unearthed 'lost' tracks from Warner Chappell's CPM Archive series, which have never been released on vinyl before. We'll hazard a quip: the word 'timeless' often doesn't come to mind, yet it has done here.

Review: Brooklyn funkers T&S unveiled their future releases with this special 10" sampler. Oozing soul from every groove, highlights include the orchestral narrations of Wu Tang collaborator El Michels Affair, snake-charming, barrel-massaging smoke from Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band and brand new funk from one of the most consistent soul legends Lee Fields. Effectively a massive tease... We can't wait for all of these artists' albums to drop later this year!
