Review: Over the years, Italian eccentrics 291out have proved tricky to pin down. While their releases are rooted in the spacey end of the jazz-funk spectrum, they also touch on film soundtracks, quirky electronica and meandering progressive rock. This time out they're operating on a Latin tinged jazz-rock tip, with crunchy guitars, fuzz-soaked horns, rubbery bass and eyes-closed electric piano motifs rising above a head-nodding groove. The band's included "Alternative Version" is noticeably wilder and more intense, with a looser beat and a greater number of mind-mangling horn solos. In terms of remixes, you'll find Italian veterans Leo Mas and Fabrice at the controls. Their A-side revision sounds a little like a jazzier take on Italian Balearic rock merchants Almunia, while their flipside "Alternative Remix" is a bounding, peak-time-ready jazz-house workout.

Review: Earlier in the year, Lorenzo G Morresi made his vinyl debut on Roots Underground Records with an EP that cannily joined the dots between deep house and broken beat. "Objet Melodie", his debut album, takes a far more widescreen approach, utilising a dizzying array of acoustic and electronic instruments - including some rather unusual, home-made ones to create tracks that eschew easy categorisation and display a wide range of global musical influences. Many of the tracks in some way touch on deep house, ambient, jazz-funk, electronica and tribal rhythms, but often only loosely. As a result, Morresi's musical vision is hard to pin down, though largely explores similar sonic territory to fellow Italians Nu Guinea. Crucially, it's a hugely entertaining and listenable album.

Review: With Fly By Night Music celebrating their fifth year of operation, label boss Lorenzo has marked the occasion by assembling his biggest project to date: an impeccably curated collection of obscure Italian music from 1974 - 1985. The project has been a year in the making and very close to his heart, beginning unexpectedly in the record fairs of Buenos Aires and leading him on several trips across Italy, tracking down the original musicians and licensors. On this compilation, Lorenzo has tried to include some of the most interesting cuts he's collected over the years. The music itself was partly sourced from his own collection, archived and then restored especially for this release. Where possible, tracks such as Lamberto Macchi's "Vision", Alberto Baldan Bembo's "Nitrogen" and King Zerand Orchestra's "Blue Magnolia" have been lifted directly from the original master tapes, kindly lent by the label owners.
