The Unreleased Funk Instrumentals
The Unreleased Funk Instrumentals (limited 7'' repress)
Cat: DAVID 001. Rel: 19 May 25
Golden Years (instrumental - previously unreleased 45 edit) (4:02)
Fame (instrumental - previously unreleased Funk 45 edit) (4:03)
Review: Bowie is a new label that says it intends to "dig deep into the unreleased sides of pop superstars material from the past." The opening gambit is a strong one that should hook you in for more as it comes in the form of a 7" with two fine funk instrumentals, neither of which have been put out before. 'Golden Years' has lovely live drums and meandering guitar licks for some carefree listening, while 'Fame' has a deep cut groove that rises and falls in dramatic fashion with more neat and tidy riffs adding the detail next to the big licks.

Love Is The Drug
Love Is The Drug (orange vinyl 7")
Cat: TBE 721. Rel: 22 May 25
Love Is The Drug (Funk mix - vocal) (4:46)
Love Is The Drug (Funk mix - instrumental) (4:51)
Review: Brian Ellis, known for his multi-instrumental work as part of Birdbone Unlimited on Star Creature, steps out with a solo release that channels West Coast flair into a bold reinterpretation of early 80s dancefloor energy. Revisiting Bobby O's production 'Love Is The Drug' for Roni Griffith's 1982 hit, Ellis transforms the original into a shimmering blend of Italectro and funk-driven electrobass, a proto-freestyle fandango filtered through Ellis' signature analog sensibility. A high-gloss, synth-laced homage results on orange gamboge vinyl; a replenishing source of sunny sonic vitamin D.

Kona
Kona (7")
Cat: BJ 741. Rel: 22 May 25
Kona (3:40)
Silver Bass (4:10)
Review: Eliot Lipp's latest is a classy melange of breakbeats, shimmering guitar samples and his signature Korg MS-20 synth work. First cut 'Kona' opens with a punchy but dubby rhythm before easing into a breezy, sun-soaked groove that evokes the vibe of a sunset drive or a chilled beach session. Lipp masterfully blends retro analog warmth with clean, modern production as he twists knobs and filters the Korn leads into cosmic rays that feel both nostalgic and fresh. 'Silver Bass' is perfect for summer soundtracking-whether you're coasting down the highway or dancing under the open sky, it's a deeply feel-good jam built for golden hour moments.

Disco Donuts Vol 3 (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: NUTS 003. Rel: 21 May 25
Expansions (4:14)
Ghetto Passion (4:06)
Review: Deified disco editor Mister Mushi breaks from his own Mushi 45s faction for a diplomatic dance-over with fellow sonic saucerers Disco Donuts, whose third volume in a series hammers home two more spacey soma-uplifts. 'Expansions' of course jazz-funk clarion call 'Expansions' by Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes, whose importuning "expand your mind" motif will never leave us. And of course, there's 'Ghetto Passion', an unknown remix to us, yet whose beats are so punctual that they could pop an iron ballon; this is a raw, clear and seething analogue sound, a style which many disco artists have tried to emulate since.

Summer Came My Way
Cat: SWS 7001. Rel: 20 May 25
Summer Came My Way (radio edit) (4:36)
Summer Came My Way (Ambient edit) (4:30)
Review: Greg Wilson and The Reynolds first teamed up in 2015 for 'Summer Came My Way' as a vocoder-topped summer twinkler, backed up by sweltering handclaps and gutting electric pianistic held notes. The Merseyside DJ and producer is alleged, at least as far as Discogs bios go, to have pioneered the UK electro scene, though his collaborative sensibility with twins Katherine and Carmel Reynolds here proved otherwise downbeat but munificent in emotion, compared to electro's later superlatively harsh, snappy, two-step snarings. The Balearic soul of 'Summer Came My Way' as deserving of its new ambient version, and it is the real highlight here, manifesting before us dazzlingly with its scatted lyrics and acid torsions.

Light As Before
Light As Before (Noche Esponola remix)
Review: Phil Mison, long revered for his chill-out sets and Balearic sensibility as a DJ, not to mention over two dozen releases under his belt, returns as Cantoma with a new single that perfectly captures the spirit of sunset listening. 'Light As Before' is a gentle and evocative piece built on Latin percussion, breezy guitar work and a standout horn section that lifts the track into a golden-hour daydream. It's the kind of track that feels tailor-made for a coastal terrace, a glass in hand and nowhere to be but the present. The B-side remix is a tasteful reimagining that dials down the horns and replaces them with soft flutes and delicate acoustic textures. This version leans deeper into the groove with a more introspective yet still melodic mood. It trades some of the exuberance for warmth and depth, making it an ideal complement to the original. Both sides highlight Mison's continued mastery of Balearic downtempo.

DJ Spinna - "Marple Syrup Jam" (3:10)
J Rocc - "Re : Purple Music" (4:52)
Review: A pair of US block party icons unite here, as Brooklyn house and disco maestro DJ Spinna and LA turntable wizard J Rocc share this tidy little Prince tribute. First to bat is Spinna, a man responsible for countless soul- and funk-heavy club jams since emerging in the late 90s. He takes on The Purple One's 1987 cut, 'Starfish and Coffee', with a less-is-more edit approach, subtly reframing the cut into a head-nodding groover. On the flip, Beat Junkies founder J Rocc serves his rework of the gorgeously abstract 'Purple Music', with sleazy vocals riding a freeform funk track over a lively tempo. You can't go wrong with Prince, and he's in safe hands with this pair of seasoned party rockers at the controls.

Master Peace Vol 1
Master Peace Vol 2
Review: Another dug-out dispatch from Tokyo's most diligent soul surgeon. This latest 7" distills veteran editor Loftsoul's flair for unearthing overlooked grooves and flipping them into low-slung, floor-ready burners. Side A stretches a sweet, previously under-the-radar soul cut into a strut-ready salivation, while the flip dips into hazier jazz-funk moorings: crisp drum breaks, warm Rhodes, slow-cooked syncopation. With subtle EQ and caressing lowpass warmth, we hear it's not about maximal intervention; it's about knowing where to put the scalpel. The latest in a long-running series, it's certainly an outlier find for record-bin archaeologists.

Yume No Tsuzuki
Yume No Tsuzuki (instrumental)
Review: Fresh from the release of her typically excellent Love Fest single - a masterclass in boogie and 80s synth-soul revivalism, like much of her output - Boston-based artist Saucy Lady pays tribute to the 1980s musical culture of her native Japan. Produced in collaboration with Aussie producer Slynk (who last worked with Saucy Lady in 2023), 'Yume No Tsuzuki' sits somewhere between vintage 'City Pop' and Japanese takes on 80s soul. As you'd expect, it's as musically authentic as you'd expect - colourful synths, punchy drum machine beats and boogie sonic squiggles aplenty - with Saucy Lady singing in both Japanese and English. The superb full vocal version (side A) is our pick, but the instrumental mix is also well worth club plays.
