DUPLOCXX PT2A
DUPLOCXX PT2A (white vinyl 12")
Cat: DUPLOCXX PT2A. Rel: 18 Jan 24
11th Hour & Hebbe - "Access Denied" (4:38)
Mikrodot - "Sun God" (3:45)
Merricat Black - "Tricky Bizzness" (4:26)
Losco & ONHELL - "Carnal" (2:58)
Substrada - "Stonk Face" (4:37)
Wraz - "Wriggle" (4:12)
Review: Duploc continue to fly the flag for true-skool dubstep with their digital output and a renewed run of vinyl pressings. Duploc Blaxck Tapes 2.0 originally dropped back in 2022 and the tracks from the likes of Hamdi, Hypho and ENiGMA Dubz were instantly getting picked up by such respected selectors as Youngsta, Sicaria Sound and Riz La Teef. It's not hard to see why, given the label's declared focus on "the heavier dubstep sound" with incendiary results. If you want to test some subs with the gnarliest 140 gear around, this record is all you need.

Akcept - "Control Tower" (4:39)
Bukkha & Halcyonic - "What's In A Dub" (4:15)
Review: Lion Charge live up to their name and march into the new year with serious intent. Another split-sided release plunging into the depths of the exciting new generation, both sides carry a distinct vibe. Akcept fires out the orders over a relentless but stately 4/4, sweeping horns and shimmering dub effects on "Control Tower". Flip for "What's In A Dub", a much more minimal dubbed-out percussive skanker from the US and UK combo Bukkha & Halcyonic. Warm, authentic and limited; the charge is on.

Temple Duel (5:06)
Temple Dub (5:02)
Review: Blimey, if this isn't major meeting of musical Midas minds then we don't know what is. Alter Echo, E3 and Headland all collaborating with legendary dub flautist Diggory Kenrick. "Temple Duel" sets the scene in deep underground chambers, untouched by the sun. Reverb space is our only guide and ritual combat is the only way out as we make our way through subsonic 808 bass foundations, a near-industrial mid-range bass guitar groove, stiff snares, stick-fighting percussion and Diggory's torchlight melody. A truly fluid hypnotic narrative that arcs through the dark, if you're looking for an even foggier route flip for "Temple Dub" where the torch is extinguished and you have nothing but your sonic wits to take you home. Only Diggory knows if you make alive or not...

Review: Welcome to Ridley Road, home of the vagabonds at new label Sub Merchants. You might not leave with all your belongings intact. Hell, you might not leave with some limbs intact. But just listen to these beats and you know a good time is guaranteed. Distinct Motive, Fearless Dread, Hella and Logan all on board with a few tunes apiece, vibes range from trippy dubstep to slinky grime. Highlights include the tension and brilliantly tamed wobbles on 'Therapy', the roughhouse two-step slammage of 'Light 'Em' and Logan's fat patter on the bubbly vocal 'Chattings.' Light em up!

Cuss Cuss (TMSV remix)
Review:  Recently revisited by RSD on the Broken Beats album, Horace highlight "Cuss Cuss" gets two superb reworks from DJ Madd and TMSV. The former goes for a starker, more traditional dub vibe, allowing the original riff to play a lead role in the arrangement while the rich steppy beats drive the groove forward. TMSV flips for more of a traditional dubstep flavour with a more prominent halfstep and uglier bassline. Both versions are incredible. No cussing please...

Drone - "Spear" (4:00)
Review: Drone is on fire right now. His debut with 1985 was a real standout and now he links up to great effect with rising d&b talent Hyroglifics. The serve up some straight sound system heat with 'Faded,' a high pressure cut with deadly bass and deft synth designs that ride over the stumbling kicks. ON the reverse of this heavyweight 180g slab is 'Spear.' It is an icy and haunting stepper with some distant radio transmissions, lurching bass and bright melodic daubs to bring a little colour to the all consuming rhythm, powerful stuff on every level.

B+A+D - "Moon, Sea & Waves" (8:10)
Review: Thew newly minted Newmont label makes a bold statement of intent here with a pair of no nonsense tracks. Hal Grover's 'Carlotta's Dream' comes as an Orbit mix - which may or may not be a reference to the seminal Morley techno night of the same name - and it voyages to outer space on tightly woven breaks, with smeared pads and a melancholic bassline ON the flip side, things slow right down in the hands of B+A+D -for their 'Moon, Sea & Waves.' It's spacious, heavyweight and eerie with coarse hits and far sighted pads.

Can't Hide (RSD remix) (3:41)
Review: Following a couple of impressive collaborative releases last year, Bristol bass-head Halcyonic returns to action on debutant imprint Firmly Rooted. This time round, veteran roots-man Junior Dread handles mic duties, delivering a smoky vocal on "Can't Hide". The track itself is rolling, bass heavy and heady, with ricocheting electric piano notes and dub-wise horn lines rising above a riddim that sits somewhere between digi-dub and dubstep. On the flipside, Bristol stalwart Rob Smith dons his familiar RSD alias to deliver a dancefloor-focused deep dubstep revision that peppers a weighty groove with dubbed-out horn blasts, disconnected vocal snippets and mind-mangling angular electronic pulses.

Bass driven dub reggae with deep roots on A side cut "Holy Dub". The flip welcomes Belgian Digid back to the label, with his heavyweight Steppa's remix featuring the same Jah vibes as heard on countless releases for the likes of Moonshine, Dubbing Sun and Archetype in recent times. Killa (4:12)
Second Mouse (3:43)
Simplicity (3:48)
Review: The UK's Hamdi, formerly Hamdiman, has been a formidable presence on the dubstep scene since at least god knows when. We're therefore delighted to note his debut release on the instrumental dubstep label Deep Medi, proving that the often elusive but no less prolific Mala-run label still has their finger on the pulse when it comes to championing next-gen talent. 'Simplicity' recalls the tripletty experiments of the more experimental, nay brutal players in dubstep, with 'Killa' barely indulging even so much as a hint of reverb, except for on the titular sample. The 6/8 timing continues throughout, with 'Second Mouse' utilising a surreal "why?" sample amid sudden stops and tricky hi-hat creeps-upward. The sendoff 'Simplicity', finally, pays homage to an earlier apogee of the scene, perhaps nodding at Coki's raw and unpolished growly sound heard in his 'Spongebob' era.

You (Phaeleh remix)
You (Indigo remix)
Review: Fledgling Polish imprint New Moon give compatriot Hatti Vatti the clear blue vinyl treatment, revisiting the producer's 2011 debut in fine style and enlisting the contrasting talents of Phaeleh and Indigo to remix "You". Featuring the vocals of Cian Finn, this was Hatti Vatti's breakthrough track and both producers retain core elements of the original whilst flushing their productions with signature studio touches. Afterglow regular Phaeleh calls shotgun with a stripped back revision of the original, all intricate clicking rhythms and misty swathes of swampy bass that lends the track a whole new moodiness. Equally different in tone is the treatment from Mindset Recordings boss Indigo, adopting a rhythmic poise around the 170bpm that certainly recalls the autonomic endeavours of D Bridge and company - unrivalled deepness on this one!

Projector
Review: Tony Williams applies the breaks to the Addison Groove juggernaut momentarily to remind everyone of his production prowess as Headhunter. Possibly named in honour of our favourite record label right now, "Clone" is a punishing example of finely sculpted dubstep aimed squarely for finely crafted sound systems. Great lolloping drums line up alongside thick waves of viscous bass that would pack a devastating punch if it took on human form, whilst 23rd century skanking rhythms interchange expertly with a stuttering techno rhythm. Flipsider "Projector" is equally authentic in its execution, building expertly from the stripped back syncopated half step thump of the opening bars into a deviant array of sub bass pressure lines and rippling synths.

What U Got
Default
Review: Dubstep so deep, it's taken almost two years to finally surface! Both "What You Got" and "Default" first played cameo roles amongst selected player's sets way back in 2010. Now available on heavyweight vinyl, and loaded with the space and enchantingly sparse sonics we've come to expect from one of Tempa's original badmen, this is likely to fly out. Lead track "What You Got" strides forth with chilling, well-spaced stabs that are countered with warm resonating bass. "Default" is a little more subdued; textured with alien pads and atmospheric patterns, intrigue can be found in the tight, pensive groove.

Stand Alone (5:07)
Review: Don't call it a comeback, he never went away. Well, actually he did; Tony Williams hasn't released any dubstep since 2011, but his deep seeded spirit and dynamic rolling grooves could still be heard in his Addison Groove output. Now, to mark the launch of the brand new Trusik imprint, he's donned his old robes again to remind us who is boss. "Parallels" is a real tribal stomper with twisted scatter-gun kicks and deep bass plunges. "Stand Alone" contains a generous pinch of future thanks to Cosmic Bridge style amen flurries and strange sound designs that have before been heard outside of a space ship. Actually, do call it a comeback. A really exciting one.

Review: It's deep down under: Headland returns to his own label with two powerful bass moments. "Seen" is a dizzying maze of elements that spring from left and right, spilling over a bassline seemingly made of pure doom. "Cold Warning" takes us down even darker paths with pranged out reverse synth textures, a slurring toxic bass texture and drums that rattle like industrial strength snakes. Heads up.

They know that if anything can bring us together it's the tones and textures of rising New Zealand sub-smith Headland. "Tapescho" is a real call to arms with its anchor groove pushing forward on every half as tightly weaved FX and elements flash in and out of the journey. Just listen to "Tasty Witch" (if you've not already heard it from the big guns at the likes of Outlook) and you'll agree. Big organs. Strange funk. Powerful positivity. And that's just the lead track. Elsewhere we're hypnotised by the purring subs on "Bedrock", we dive headfirst in low end treacle on "Idle" and get beautifully wavey on "Tweak". Review: Mean Gene Headland returns to the perennial dub stable Innamind with three more bone-shaking beauties. "The Judge" slams the hammer of justice down and declares us all innocent as an accordion chord weaves around middle eastern strings, "Camino" puts its foot down and drives us into the horizon on a road made of naked drums under a sky of dreamy harpsicord arpeggios while "Strays" summons us all back to the courtroom and declares us guilty in one fell moody, groaning bassline swoop. Each track laden with weight and hypnotic charm, 'Dogtooth' sets the scene and lures into the mist with its slow and sludgy diversions. It's followed by a whole stack next level sorcery; 'Roamer' is a disarming creeper from another dimension, 'Industry' was actually made out of your dreams while 'Sour' was made out of your nightmares. Review: Since making his debut under the Headland alias a couple of years back, New Zealander Gene Wariner has showcased his brand of deep bass-weight vibes on such labels as Innamind, Well Rounded Dubs and, most recently, ZamZam. Here he adds another label to his already impressive discography via a tasty two-tracker on System Music. Opener "Young Blood" begins with scene-setting spoken word samples and the introduction of a twinkling synthesizer melody, before the Kiwi producer slams in crispy dubstep beats and a warm, weighty bassline. While impressive, it's flipside "Witness" - a properly smoky, dub-wise exploration rich in pulsing, razor-sharp analogue electronics, speaker-busting bass and clandestine aural textures - that hits home hardest.

Review: In the need of new energy and new solutions? Look no further than Headland and Epoch, they've got everything you need in two rather handsome - if a little floppy - formations. The title says it all - 'Flaccid Acid' - a deliciously Daliesque trip where the bassline melts before your very inner eye in the most lazy, almost sarcastic way. Chakra realigning 140 funk from the left hand side, this is exactly what Doctor Hoffman would jam to. Need a little stiffener? Flip for part two, it's got a little more poke. Review: Finnish film composer Headrooms makes his debut on Dutch beat institution Groove College. Graduating with distinction, both cuts sparkle with dreamy, densely textured soul while slouching on beautifully slo-mo breakbeats. "Pillow Talk" is straight out the Nightmares On Wax playback; all emotional and string-laced. "Silly Chats" looks more towards the smokier trip-hop sound of the early 90s (think Cold Cut or very early Shadow) with the same great laidback effect. An immaculate debut.

Two years on the mystery artist behind the project has finally treated us to a follow-up. We're particularly enjoying A-side "Rasta Nuh Gangsta", a fine slab of deep dubstep/21st century digital reggae fusion full to the brim with sweet female lead vocals, booming bass and hazy horns. That said, flipside opener "Poverty" - a similarly inclined number featuring a soulful male lead vocal - and the wobble bass-propelled digi-dub hot-stepper "Sweet Reggae Music" are also superb.

"A8X" shimmers with an eastern twang but grunts with a London bang, thanks to its scuffed and rough bassline. With scattered vocal samples running throughout, there's something new on every listen. The first EP features no less than label resident Hebbe who was introduced to to the label in the beginning of 2018 and signed to Crucial Recordings and Artikal Music shortly after. You can hear the ghosts of DMZ and the like haunting these playful yet immersive cuts, not least on A side wobbler "Down Town Dub". The bassline snakes its way around the echo chamber drums to marvelous effect, and there's just enough weirdness in the space between to make this sound really special. "Recoil" takes the lead with a fat brass staccato riff that pummels in and out of a trippy guitar loop, "Mineral" raises the target sights higher and aims for your jugular with hypnotic techno persistency while "Beware" finishes Helktram's latest chapter with odd-ball glitchy mischief. Trust us, this whole EP lives up to its name... Recoil and reload.

Helktram - "Alter" (6:00)
D-Operation Drop - "Fibers" (4:08)
Ill_K - "Bomb" (5:21)
Shu & Zygos - "Landfall" (4:42)
Review: Four years into their story, deep dubstep stalwarts Subaltern Records has decided to drop its first compilation style EP. Fittingly, Kaleidoscope Volume 1 begins with a contribution from a new addition to the label roster, Helktram. The producer's "Alter" is a rolling and undeniably heavy affair, with creepy horror strings and clandestine textures rising above crunchy snares, punchy kick-drums and a restless analogue bassline. Label regular D-Operation Drop serves up a skewed slice of vintage, spaced-out dubstep ("Fibers"), before Berlin-based Ill K dives deeper via the lo-fi drum hits, decaying audio textures and heavy sub of "Bomb". Finally, Shu and Zygos join forces for "Landfall", a Burial style dark ambient/dubstep fusion cut that reverberates at a slower than average tempo.

Judgement Time
Review: Following their Johnny Osbourne-celebrating launch release in summer 2013, the mysterious 1Drop returns with two more essential authentic dub visitations. "High Grade" comes with a physical bass-kick groove and sharp shimmers of evangelistic vocal flection while "Judgement Day" swaggers with a more classical dub groove. Conscious, reflective and wholly immersive, 1Drop have done it again.

Venom (3:47)
Tru (4:38)
Addict (4:25)
Review: New name, but a very trusted source. Mr K reveals his new alias Hijinx on Jack Sparrow's Navy Cut by way of three mind-bending bass jams. 'Venom' starts the march, all grumpy and full focus on the curmudgeonly riff, before 'Tru' takes us up a few gears. Skippy and mischievously unpredictable in the drums, there's a slo-mo jungle menace running throughout before we collide head-first into the humungous finale 'Addict'. Tense and foreboding, Hijinx isn't playing around here. And neither are Navy Cut as all profits go to the Ben Raemers Foundation.

De-tu - "Off My Chest" (Hijinx remix) (3:22)
Review: London dubstep producers Hijinx (Kyle Smith) and De-Tu (the trio of C-Side, Christopher Iona and Jevon Ives) team up in an enviably collaborative form, reserving five 12" grooves spread evenly and fairly over two originals each, not to mention these serving to top-cherry one more collaborative number, '3310', which leads the charge on this White Peach juicer. The mood on the record is dynamic and midrange scoopy as ever, with a no-more-no-less production approach squeezing just the right sense of scape from the mix, never saturating its sounds in wetness.

Review: Having slayed us with a whole slew of dispatches in the last year or so on the likes of Unchained and Vandal, not to mention his own fine line of self releases, HOST now comes correct on Sherelle's firebrand Hooversound label. Dedicated to the rave, it's another deadly body blow... 'Survive' sums up the angst of the time with its warped 808 cascades, '3D Passive' takes foundation elements like the pitched up vocal, skippy breaks and scuffy, gruff production to 2020's dark standards and Om Unit seals the deal with an exemplary remix. Hoover this one up quick sharp.

Review: North UK bass fusionist Hypho continues to push his sound into all kinds of interesting spaces between breaks, dubstep, trap, grime and hip-hop with this vinyl version of last year's 'ENV029' EP for Encrypted. Four tracks heavy, 'Badman Tune' with Logan Olm takes us on a tropical grime flex before 'The System' takes lead with supersized subs built strictly for the massive rigs. Flip for two more slabs or low end luxury as 'You're A Neek' showcases Hypho's instrumental grime ideas before 'About Me' closes with a little window of dreamy two-step soul. The full Hypho and all the trimmings right here.

Review: Deep Dark & Dangerous snap up debutant signing Hypho here. The talented producer created the tunes on this EP during lockdown and next to his beats, four guests all step up to make fine features. 'Dust Of The Devil' opens with an ice cold sound built on bottomless low ends and with some fine flow from Slowie. Strategy is the guest on 'Dirty Water' and his rapid bars add real energy to the sparse and deadly rhythm. 'Suffering' is another fresh cut with digital effects and punning kicks then the twinkling keys and Digital-dub of 'Stellar Transit' (feat Xakra & Finnoh) close in style.

Review: HYPHO's debut on the Wheel & Deal Records label is as darken and menacing as it is brilliant. 'Muharib Skank' kicks off in menacing fashion with an eerie late night street vibe, low end oscillations and well placed vocal samples. 'Affektion' is more lush, with nice chill melodies thinking over a tricking drill beat. It's deep as you like. 'Moody Marge' then brings more nocturnal sounds with drifting keys and stuttering drums and bass, and 'MS20 Skank' rounds out with icy hits and swaggering drums that swing low. A well-crafted and emotive bass EP.

Ishan Sound & Hodge - "C5" (4:37)
Ishan Sound & Muttley - "Still Smoking" (4:24)
Review: Having recently notched up 100 releases, Tectonic begins a new era by offering up a suitably weighty collaborative release from Peng Sound regular Ishan Sound. On side A, the Young Echo member joins forces with Hodge - owner of the nicest hair in techno - for the deep and dreamy dubstep shuffle of "C5", where fluid riffs dance above a blazed but powerful beat. Muttley lends a hand on flipside cut "Still Smoking", an altogether livelier and more aggressive - if still suitably deep and hazy - 140 BPM workout that comes complete with stabbing, grime style riffs and some serious subsonic bass.

Review: Remix! WRD crew flex back to '16 then flex right forward with two killer versions. First up is NUMBer's "Aether" under the careful knife of Headland. Maintaining those pranged out stretched radars and solvent vapours of the original but adding a whole new level of trippiness to the bass, it's a perfect updated. Tetrad takes the remix drivers seat on the B with a more fractured, subversive take on Headland's "Local". More waspy basses, more hidden surprises but still just as weighty, it's another creative update. Highly limited.

Review: Codex is a brand new various artists series from 1985 Music. The opening four tracker features esteemed label boss Alix Perez alongside crucial bass craftsmen Hijinx, Epoch and Ebb. It is Perez himself who opens the proceedings with earth shattering bass quakes and drilling synths on 'VTRN' before Hijinx explores a wide open and cavernous underground space detailed with ticking hits and warped synth reverberations. EBB's 'Ill Rest' is another masterfully deep dubstep wobbler with a signature saw both synth ripping up the groove and Epoch's 'Beastmode' is a bustling, bristling joint that keeps you on your toes.

Review: Following their recent appearance on Well Rounded Dubs, US dubber Tetrad and NZ kindred spirit Headland land on Unity Through Sound with two enveloping, sense-mashing jams. "Green Crack" is Tetrad solo; all molten mechanical reverbs, spry skanks and an MC call-to-arms. "Crossed Out", meanwhile, sees the pair collide for a trippier, more twisted spiralling sludgy number. Drop it and watch heads fry.

Review: Almost 20 years have passed since Australian duo's debut LP Alleys To Valleys landed in our collections. Now we see these valleys from the flip perspective as they creatively scale us to the very summit of Mirror Mountain, their most ambitious body of work so far. Sitting somewhere between Booka Shade, Four Tet and Chemical Brothers, there's a vibrancy and energy that they've only ever hinted at before. From the soaring euphoria of 'Promises' to the emotional, cinematic breaks of 'Golden Hour' and the gentle lament of 'Tides Of Time', the pair weave a beguiling narrative through their work that really brings the album to life. Stunning.

Review: Scholars of UK bass culture will know just how much of an integral role Horsepower Productions played in the formation of dubstep, teasing darker strains of sub-bass into garage at the turn of the century. Four years on from their last album, dubstep pioneers Horsepower Productions are back with a new LP called Crooks, Crime & Corruption. Issued through the good ship Tempa, Crooks, Crime & Corruption sees Benny Ill and company allow a certain amount of light to shine through but this is still resolutely Horsepower. 2011 tracks "Good Ole Dayz" and "Justify" both feature here in newly reworked format, with Horsepower also seeking out contributions from Berlin producer Orson and vocalist Harry Keyworth.
