Review: Mansfield new wave band B Movie unearth their long-lost 1982 album Hidden Treasures, more than forty years after they first recorded it for Phonogram, an imprint of Universal. The band were on the same management and signed to the same label as Soft Cell, but their career turned out to be a damp squib by comparison and they split up in the mid-eighties, without ever releasing this great album of synth pop for goths. Taking influences from the likes of Ultravox and The Human League, they cloak it in a more brooding atmosphere, reminiscent of The Chameleons and Joy Divsion - hitting all the right notes along the way, we think.

Review: It might have taken 23 plus years since for us to be welcoming a new studio album by Pulp, but in terms of work in the studio, it only took them three weeks. Jarvis Cocker and co. decamped to a studio in Walthamstow, East London with James Ford and quickly found their groove, making it a much smoother recording process than their last couple of albums, so hopefully they'll be back with more relatively soon. Sonically, it's not a retread of Britpop - there's a timelessness to the nuanced indie pop and a smorgasbord of textures and sounds that leave the listener with plenty to hold on to. Cocker is the north of England's answer to David Bowie and one of the greatest front men to ever walk out on a stage, so it's a truly welcome return.

Review: Southend's These New Puritans have a rare ability to create goosebump-inducing music. A big part of is is Jack Barnett's voice, which is truly up there with the likes of Thom Yorke and Hayden Thorpe's in terms of being able to tug at the heartstrings and create grandiose spellbinding atmospheres. Plus, the arrangements that accompany it are of elite level and taste. This new album is their fifth studio album since forming in 2006 and offers plenty in the way of diversity. 'A Season In Hell' is a wild mix of industrial, organ music, trip-hop and choir sounds. Elsewhere, 'Bells' is less intense and let's the atmosphere form gradually and luxuriously. If you want a record to properly blow your socks off, let it be this.

Review: Japan's Envy created one of the most respected post-rock screamo albums of all time with this third album of theirs. Originally released in 2001 on Japense punk label H.G. Fact and again as a limited released in 2003 on Dim Mak Records in the U.S., with not many physical copies printed they've been scarcely available. Thankfully, that's all about to change now that this enduring masterpiece of foreboding post rock and blisteringly powerful screams is getting repressed. Envy's strength lies in their ability to flip flop between introspective atmospheric passages and intense guttural aggression within a track and for it to be cohesive. That said, where they don't relent, like on 'Invisible Thread', the adrenaline really kicks in and it's a palpable reenactment of the atmosphere at their live shows.

Review: Alan Sparhawk isn't one for large crowds or the showy side of fame, yet over the course of his career, his influence has expanded far beyond his low-key persona. As the frontman of Low, the band he founded in the early 90s in Duluth, Minnesota, Sparhawk's distinct style has permeated not just indie rock but also the broader sphere of music that prizes depth over spectacle. The hallmark of Sparhawk's songwriting is the austere, almost minimalist beauty he coaxes from the sparsest of arrangements. His approach to music is inextricable from his sense of placeiDuluth's biting winters, its isolationieverything about the environment feeds into the slow-moving intensity of Low's sound. Musically, the album moves through a variety of textures, from the folk-tinged melodies of 'Heaven' and 'Get Still' to the raw emotional power of 'Screaming Song' and 'Don't Take Your Light.' Review: It's a pity that Marc Riley is less regular than he once was on BBC 6 Music because the ex-Fall member has phenomenal taste and raw passion that makes you too want to love music as much as he does. A staunch champion of the beloved Leeds indie rockers The Wedding Present, these eight tracks are taken from two sessions that David Gedge and co. laid down in 2019 and 2023. There's a wellspring of riches here from the 1985-formed band. Review: If you roll the clock back ten years and more you'd be made to think you're crazy for saying Ty Segall will release country-inflected soft rock one day. He was making the very best feral sweaty garage rock quite consistently. But you know what? The new look suits him well and his Warren Zevon-era is cool. 'Fantastic Tomb' is a string and horn-laden romp that will liven up any home that's lucky enough to have it played within its four walls. The fallout from this will most likely be that the curtain is closing on all the neo-psych and garage rock and more bands are likely to follow in line with this type of sound. This is at the forefront of a new wave of country/Americana-tinged alt-rock that started when Black Lips did it ironically but is now gaining momentum in more sincere, yet still flamboyant ways.

Review: San Fran-born Ben Kweller is a former member of post grunge band Radish, who were signed to Mercury Records in the 90s and count the mighty Nils Lofgren as a fan. His solo output, however, is a lot more prolific: this is his seventh studio album. Poignantly, the album is written in honour of what would have been his late son Dorain Zev's 19th birthday. This is Kweller's first release since Dorian's tragic passing in 2023. The album is blessed to have some incredible guests, Waxahatchee, The Flaming Lips and MJ Lenderman all lend a hand. And musically Kweller's power as a singer-songwriter is in potent condition - 'Dollar Store', which is two vocals and a guitar for the most part needs nothing more to captivate. That it then bursts into a distorted, soaring finale is just a bonus. It's no wonder the most talked about newcomers in America indie wanted to be involved with this album.

Review: We've all been party to solo material by seminal UK shoegaze sorts Ride's guitarist Andy Bell, but what about their bassist? Not so much. Well, that's about to change. Enter the brooding debut solo album from Ride's low-end maestro Steve Queralt. A largely instrumental affair, there's elements of shoegaze and darkly textured soundscapes. Plus there's guest appearances from more 90s legends: Emma Anderson (formerly of Lush and Sing-Sing) and Verity Susman (Electrlane, MEMORIALS) grace the album. Anderson sings on the pummeling lead single 'Lonely Town', which was launched with an aptly monochrome meditative montage of a music video. Given the power of this debut, we suspect this nine-song collection is the first of many solo albums to come, from a musician who has nothing to prove, but plenty to express.

Review: This is the first album in four years from Scot-fronted Los Angeles band Garbage and their eighth studio album total. The previous album, No Gods No Masters, delved into some heavy sociopolitical themes, which were given a lot of attention because it came out amid Covid. With this album, as the title gives away, there is a shift towards more positive thinking, even if some seriousness remains. The single 'There's No Future In Optimism' reminds us to grab life by the horns and feel unburned by darkness for a moment - Shirley Manson clearly remembering the joy of pop and the hope it can bring, despite geopolitical uncertainties. Sonically, they've crafted very powerful electronica-tinged rock, with a brilliant emphasis on rhythm, the joys of a well constructed beat and some gritty bass.

Review: Billy Nomates' third studio album is the first that the Bristol-based Invada Records-signee recorded in the studio with a band. Formerly a solo artist standing alone on stage and making albums much the same way, now she has bass player Mandy Clarke (The Go! Team) and drummer Liam Chapman (BMX Bandits) backing her. They all went to Paco Loco Studios in beautiful Andalucia, Spain to record with James Trevascus (her hit single 'No' was the first thing they did together and they have a solid working relationship since). The resulting tracks - not least 'Plans' and 'Dark Horse Friend' (featuring actual Stranglers man Hugh Cornwell) from this adventure to sunnier climes are staggeringly impressive. It seems Billy Nomates, real name Tor Maries, has made the best album of her artistic life to-date. And it's a milestone that's bound to ensure this talented artist remains part of the fabric of British popular music for years to come.

Review: Indiana singer-songwritern Lisa Germano's 1994 moody dark indie rock masterpiece has been remastered at Abbey Road Studios in London. This expanded edition - released as part of 4AD's Record Store Day spread - includes 'The Mirror Is Gone' and the five-track EP 'Inconsiderate Bitch', making it a bumper version of one of the key albums of the 90s. Germano's voice is a thing of wonder with lyrics that cut through the noise. The sonics underpinning her voice are often sparse and atmospheric, allowing us listeners to really feel the intimacy of feeling. It's no wonder the likes of Eels, Bowie and Iggy Pop called her in to guest on their records.

Review: This is The National's Matt Berninger's second solo album and treads a sonically similar path to the Cincinnati band, with some forlorn lyrics and gloomy delivery. Berninger is clearly a fan of plumbing the depths of his heart and fortunately has the talent to be considered one of the top merchants of emotion around these days. Of the tracks here, 'Breaking Into Acting' is a beautiful slice of stately Americana and his vocals interlock beautifully with Meg Duffy, aka Hand Habits. For something more energetic try 'Bonnet Of Pins' as it's a pulsating chamber pop cut with thumping rhythms and a tear-jerking yet rabble rousing atmosphere. Live, this one will ultimately go down a treat.

Review: Hozier's 'Take Me To Church' was the ineluctable indie pop staple of 2013, finding the Irish singer-songwriter explore gothic and religious themes, bringing a confessional feel to a tired relationship amid intrafaith discrimination. This was despite short shrift for Hozier himself, where at the time, Hozier's queerness unfairly barred him from full participation in life as an orthodox Catholic. This new reissue from UMR sheds light on that same moment over a full decade on.
