Kairo Bancou Moulu (4:43)
The Kevin Fingier Collective - "Addis Ababa" (3:14)
Review: Fingier is Acid Jazz's new sub label for the multifarious works of Argentinian producer Kevin Fingier. Fingier touches on soul, R&B, boogaloo and raw funk in his music, and that's true once again on this collaboration with Abdoulaye Badiane. Badiane is originally from Senegal but now based in Argentina, and he's been travelling the world for 20 years teaching African music. Now he brings his musical heritage to bear on Fingier's funk, and the fusion is incredibly sweet and soulful. 'Kairo Bancou Moulu' has a 60s touch, while 'Addis Ababa' naturally takes its cues from the incredible legacy of Ethiopian jazz.

Mercy Mercy Baby (2:45)
Mercy Mercy Baby (instrumental) (3:02)
Review: Puerto Rican music legend Ray Barretto has a seriously impressive biography, including spells with the Tito Puente Orchestra and the acclaimed Fania All Stars. This tasty seven-inch single serves up one of Barretto's best boogaloo-era cuts, 1968 single and Acid album track "Mercy, Mercy Baby". It remains a fine song, wrapping a jaunty salsa rhythm in various boogaloo aural hallmarks, including impassioned vocals, funk-influenced horns and an incessant piano riff. Interestingly, this edition doesn't feature the original single B-side, but rather a previously unissued instrumental version. Shorn of the vocals and pop production, it feels breezier and heavier, with additional trumpet solos that will wind their way into your subconscious.

Top Brass (3:36)
Top Brass (Bare Essentials mix) (3:41)
Review: Composer Matt Berry aims to mimic the classic iconic Library Music label KPM with this new outing on Acid Jazz. It is the first in a series of such releases and it does a fine job of following in the label's tradition of providing the musical bedrock for classic British TV series and international movies. KPM used composers such as Alan Hawkshaw and Keith Mansfield and Berry proves he is right up there with this 7". 'Top Brass' is a funky instrumental with dramatic strings that add a sense of tension to the rude boy swagger of the rhythm. On the flip is a more stripped-back 'Bare Essentials mix' which is just as good and a little more menacing.

Beatmaker (3:00)
Beatmaker (instrumental) (3:09)
Review: Actor, producer and musician Matt Berry teams up instrumentally with vocalist Emma Noble on this alt-funky, psychic single jam, which comes to limited 7" wax. Lyrically, 'Beatmaker' is a rags-to-riches tale of the son of a tailor-maker who makes it big - "they know that you're the gravy-maker". Gradually, though, our protagonist's penchant for financial conquest and accruing assets begins to bite him in the foot. Ironically, that's not something you'll learn so readily after you inevitably cop the wax!

I Gotta Limit (feat Kitty Liv) (3:10)
Summer Sun (David Arnold remix) (4:25)
Review: Having played a slew of inimitable and unforgettable television comedy characters over the past decade or so, from Toast of London's Stephen Toast to Douglas Reynholm in The IT Crowd, Dixon Bainbridge in The Mighty Boosh and Todd Rivers in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, you could be forgiven for expecting Matt Berry to use songwriting and music as another form of hilarious release. That's definitely not the case. There's plenty of release on I Gotta Limit, but this is anything other than satire. The first new music to come from Berry's 2025 album, Heard Noises, the two tracks here are pure joy, authentic and genuinely impressive on a technical level. Exchanging lines in a duet with Kitty Liv for the titular number, the vibe is part Northern Soul, part psych rock, and pretty much all completely captivating.

Um Brilho Novo (2:59)
Rua Nova Barao (2:48)
Review: Argentinian producer Kevin Fingier has decided to launch a new series of seven-inch singles on his Acid Jazz Records offshoot, Fingier Records. Known as World Got Soul, the series begins via FIngier's first collaborations with Brazilian jazz singer Josi Dias. She's in fine form on A-side 'Um Brilho Novo', a superb slab of jazz-tinged Brazilian soul rich in energetic funk breaks, mazy vibraphone and flute solos, heavy bass and razor-sharp guitar licks. Even more energetic and dancefloor-ready is flipside 'Rua Nova Barao', a fine fusion of South American dancefloor jazz, funk breaks and sweaty samba rhythms. Like the A-side, it sounds like a guaranteed floor-filler.

Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' (feat Brendan Reilly - radio edit) (4:55)
Iguana Strut (5:05)
Review: Any self-respecting funk dancefloor will always react to a good Michael Jackson cover version, that's why there have been so many over the years. Adding to this canon of Jacko cover versions are London jazz funk troupe The Filthy Six who bring their take on "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" to this 7" shaped return to Acid Jazz. Long term fixtures of the label, this seven is in fact a prelude to the upcoming third album from The Filthy Six, due on Acid Jazz later this year, and their dashing live funk take on one of MJ's finest cuts will probably remain a dancefloor favourite long after. DJs don't sleep on the taut instrumental cut "iguana Strut" that lines the flip - it's just as good.

I Love Without A Love (2:15)
Review: Jo Ann Hamilton hailed from Georgia and was brought up on a diet of soul, Motown and r&b. At the tender age of seven she joined the Gospel Choir from the Melton Chappel church and then got into the disco scene. Five decades later she has linked with Kevin Fingier in Buenos Aires, Argentina for this fantastic new 7" that is imbued with classic funk, soul and swing. Opener 'September' is a massive Northern Soul gem that would have slayed back then and still does now. On the flip is the more obscure 'I love Without A Love' which is funky, tropical and infectious.

Review: Ipa-Boogie's self titled album is a super rare one that is super expensive even if you do manage to find a copy. Thankfully, for the first time ever on 7" vinyl, Acid Jazz kindly serve up short versions of 'Get The Music Now' and 'Africa', which both come from said full length. These are some of the only recordings known from this obscure band, and they first came in 1978 but still sound ahead of their time. This release, it is also worth noting, kicks off a new 45 series from Acid Jazz entitled Albarika 45, which will focus on many rare singles and unknown versions throughout the forthcoming year.

Cocktail De Medianoche (2:41)
Review: For five years, Acid Jazz has been showcasing Kevin Fingier's productions with each one carrying his signature Latin flair. It all began with 'Latin Dynamite', which sold out 15 days before its release and was followed by 'Cocktail de Medianoche' and 'Why Don't You Go Home', which were both instant sellouts. The second pressing of 'Latin Dynamite' included a fiery Latin rendition of the r&b classic 'It's Your Voodoo Working'. When Fingier released 'Not Strictly Soul,' it featured the Latin gem 'El Popcorn' which is now available on 7" for the first time. These four Latin Soul anthems are now united in one explosive Boogaloo EP that arrives just in time for summer.

They secured a huge hit with the rifts single 'Don't Wanna Cry No More' and this follow up is another must-have instrumental double sider. Opening up is 'Latin Dynamite', an explosive cut with plenty of mid 60's fusion vibes and a perfect mix of mod jazz and boogaloo. As a savvy producer, Thomas maximised his rhythms and created numerous records for a variety of artists. He emerged at the perfect time and recorded breakthrough tracks in top studios like Channel One, often with the Roots Radics. While many of his sessions were released, some remained unreleased, trapped on multi-track tape. One such session featured Sugar Minott, known for his hit 'Good Thing Going.' Benin's almighty Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou Dahomey made plenty of it. This latest 45 is another stunner with plenty of raw screams, wails and grunts all adding extra life and vitality to the already trilling guitars and bustling drum rhythms. The Acid Jazz label serves up a couple of such betters here with 'Kpede Do Gbe Houenou' layering up the driving grooves, killer horns and wild keys into something intoxicating. It's 10 years old but still bangs and is maybe one of the best records of his career. Review: Chris Bangs is a legendary figure within the UK jazz-dance scene whose extensive CV includes coining the term 'Acid Jazz'. While he's always been more of a DJ than a producer, his occasional musical outings are always on-point. 'Firebird' is his first solo album since 2008, though it was naturally created with the help of an impressive cast-list of experienced musicians. It was intended to be a collection of dancefloor-friendly tracks that explore his major musical influences - Latin jazz, jazz-funk, Brit-funk, jazz-fusion and so on - and in that regard he's hit the brief. The set's many highlights include the sun-splashed Brazilian heat of 'Samba Do Sueno', the up-tempo, extra-percussive heat of 'Firebird' and a brilliant Batacuda style cover of 'Kitchen (Cosina)' by Dom Un Romao.

Review: English actor, writer, and musician Matt Berry - of Darkplace and IT Crowd fame - covers, yes, covers an assortment of classic British TV themes. The result is an album to be appreciated as much as it is to be taken seriously, as it is to be enjoyed. Of course there's a pinch of humour with Berry placing himself alongside a muppet and Doctor Who on the album's cover art, but it's the theatrical, jazz and upbeat, yet easy listening approach of the album which really paints the picture. The LP's opener "Are You Being Served" is undeniable sweetest spot of nostalgia here, with the minutia of Thames Television indents, at 8 seconds long, also checked and covered. Recorded solo by Berry himself, it's a burgundy-beige trip through the technicolour memory of one's formative years enjoying the early-evenings and afternoons watching a select choice of the UKs most iconic TV.

Enter the Brand New Heavies, one of the key acts of the mid-eighties who sound as good on this brand new album as ever. It's littered with funk-licked pop, crystalline acid jazz and singalong songs that range from tender ballads to soaring soul. Angie Stone, Beverley Knight and other vocalists lend their tones along the way, but importantly TBNH is not a revival or self-satisfied celebration. Instead, it feels like a forward-looking and accomplished album that takes the band in subtle new directions.

Review: Since its creator pressed and released it himself in 1981, Louisville gospel musician Lamont Butler's sole album, "It's Time For A Change", has become something of an in-demand item amongst collectors. As this timely reissue proves, the album has aged rather well. Rich in infectious grooves, righteous lyrics, superb vocals (mostly provided by the man himself, with the occasional assistance of a gospel choir) and addictive instrumentation, the album's ten tracks range from funky church hall stompers ("Get Up And Praise The Lord") and deliciously jazzy slow jams ("Thank You Lord"), to summery soul songs ("Time For A Change") and the kind of hybrid folk-soul that was once associated with the late, great Terry Callier ("Smile"). In a word: superb.

The man behind groups including Solarflares and The Forefathers has been doing this since the mid-1980s, but this is his first time stepping out alone in long form style. As fans would expect (or demand), he's pulling very few punches here, delivering a record that's direct yet deep.

Few would have written the script differently, of course, with the artist known for trying to finish tracks in five or ten minutes or giving up on them entirely. If that sounds reductive then clearly you're a newcomer, because Day is among the most adept songwriters, able to craft these great works of blues and grit-stained rock 'n' roll seemingly without breaking a sweat. And long may that continue.

Review: British soul singer Dee C Lee started her career singing backup for Wham and the Style Council, before embarking on a solo career that included an early release on Mo Wax. By the late 90s, she'd pretty much stepped back from music though - making this new album for Acid Jazz a genuine surprise (it's her first new release for over a quarter of a century). It's rather good, too, with Lee's sublime and emotion-rich vocals soaring above 'heritage soul' style tracks that variously offer nods to bossa-nova ('Don't Forget About Love'), disco/jazz-funk fusion ('Be There In The Morning', with its excellent horns and fluttering flutes), and Motown-style stompers (the uplifting excellence of 'Walk Away').

Review: This long-lost 1973 album from Graham Dee is a fabled record from the man who was a key figure in the 60s London session scene and later a prolific songwriter and producer, and it is now released on vinyl for the first time. Dee was a renowned session guitarist who played with legends like Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck as well as artists such as John Lee Hooker and The Walker Brothers. After working with them, he became an in-house producer for Atlantic Records and honed a distinctive 'British Soul sound.' In the 70s, he moved to the U.S., writing songs and working at the legendary Muscle Shoals. Mr. Super Cool was only rediscovered in 2019 and it's clear to hear Dee's unique talent on a record that offers a fascinating glimpse into early 70s recording.

Review: Ferry Djimmy is quite the character - he is a mysterious Afrobeat figure who also was a former schoolteacher, boxer, Jacques Chirac's bodyguard, and well as being a legendary Beninese musical visionary. He recorded this album sometime in the mid-1970s in support of the revolutionary leader of Benin at the time - Mathieu Kerekou. A fire is reported to have turned all but 200 copies to dust so it is mega rare and expensive to get an original. Acid Jazz reissues it here in all its fiery, lo-fi, gnarly Afrobeat glory. This is a fully licensed project with all new and in-depth sleeve notes by Florent Mazzoleni.

Review: Forget the Hateful Eight, cos The Filthy Six are back in town with a new album! More Filth is the jazz sextet's third album, arriving via regular home Acid Jazz, and features their Michael Jackson cover "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin" which has already been burning up dancefloors. The rest of the album is geared towards the dance too, taking influence from Staxx as much as it does Blue Note or Prestige. Ray Charles was the inspiration for "Watch What You're Doing To Me", whilst the remainder is filled with what we've come to expect from Nick Etwell, Dan Drury, Mark Brown, Nick Nigel Price, Pete Whittaker and Simon Lea. A rock-solid rhythm section, smooth organ lines, tight brass and taut guitar.

Review: Ipa-Boogie's self-titled 1978 record is hard to find indeed. If you do unearth a copy, it will set you back answer for 500 to L1000 for even an average quality copy. A real Afro-boogie and Afro-funk gem that has been served well by the passage of time, this fully licensed reissue from Acid Jazz has been transferred from the original tapes and remastered by Grammy award-winning engineer Frank Merritt at The Carvery, and is sure to bring the band to a whole new generation of ears. The Benin group deserve it, too, because as well as being historically important, this record sounds great.

Review: .Argentina-based producer-musician Kevin Fingier has delivered a swathe of killer singles for Acid Jazz in recent years, though this is his first attempt at a "proper" album. As the title defiantly states, this is 'Not Strictly Soul', but rather a stylistic melting pot that not only joins the dots between Fingier's favourite sonic styles (think Northern Soul, deep funk, organ-powered Mod workouts, Latin soul and heavy rhythm & blues) but also rattles along at a furious pace. It's naturally nostalgic - Fingier's music has always been rooted in 1960s and '70s musical cultures - but also fresh enough to dispel thoughts of hollow pastiche. There are some killer cuts contained within, too, not least the infectious Latin soul hustle of 'Groovin' In Soho', sweet soul number 'Only For Me (featuring Jo Ann Hamilton)', and the percussion-rich, horn-heavy dancefloor heat of 'El Popcorn'.

Review: Acid Jazz Records are master compilers who here turn their focus once more to Les Sympathics De Porto Novo Benin. It's part of the label's reissues series focussing on rare sounds from legendary Benin imprint Albarika Store and is a second album from one of the most notable groups to hail from Porto Novo'. This 1970s collective, founded by Herman Laleye, is famed for its heavy rhythm section and vocals from Gangbo Bonheur, Armand Pognon playing blues-tinged guitar and Camille Zanou's on the organ. Rather than straight-up Afro-beat, Afro-funk or Latin, this band fused it all seamlessly into something new.

Last Song Of The Year
Review: Since being the Britpop DJ of choice in the mid 1990s, Andy Lewis has forged a career as a DJ, musician and producer specializing in the dance sounds of the 1960s a kind of mod savant. This mini-album for Acid Jazz his first for some time continues on this theme, coming on like the Jam after a fistful of happy pills. It's a breezy, accessible and fun sound, and one that should appeal to both baggy revivalists and wannabe mods. Look out for some social commentary in the lyrics ("Mr Camera", the loose, Hammond-heavy "Sky Bar" and sharp "Centre Of Attention"), and some excellent bass playing (Lewis is a member of Paul Weller's live band).

Review: Initially inspired by a request by long-term supporters Jazz FM to perform a live remake of one of their favourite albums, Herbie Hancock's peerless Headhunters, Chameleons sees rising British jazz-funk and contemporary jazz combo Mama Terra dive deeper into the great man's catalogue on a set recorded live at a gig in Glasgow. In keeping with their own style, they made a conscious decision to replace the formative synth sounds and future-funk influences prevalent on Hancock's work of the 70s and 80s with acoustic instrumentation. It's a bold move but, thanks to their undoubted quality and deft touch, works well. For proof, check the languid and laidback breeze through 'Butterfly', a wonderfully gritty and low-slung jazz-funk re-make of 'Chameleon' and the triumphant takes on earlier Hancock works 'Cantaloupe Island' and 'Watermelon Man'.

Now, one of our favourite bands is celebrating the tenth anniversary of their debut album No Hard Feelings with a special limited-edition olive green vinyl which coincides with an extensive UK tour. Initially pressed in small numbers before the vinyl resurgence, the album became highly sought after, with prices skyrocketing on Discogs. This reissue, remixed by Mitch Ayling, captures Nick Corbin's soulful, socially aware songwriting at its best with rare photos and new sleeve notes making it a must-have reissue.

Review: Acid Jazz has got an ongoing deal to issue and reissue music from Benin funk supergroup Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou and the latest fruits of that is this reissue of their Le Sato album. It is a follow-up to the one they dropped back in 2021 and is another section of traditional voodoo ceremonial music from the group from the mid-seventies. The name of the album is taken from the large ceremonial Sato drum, which is played with wooden stick beaters at special ceremonial occasions. Here it can be heard in all its glory making traditional rhythms and deeply ritualistic grooves that will leave you in a trance.

Review: Discerning diggers will know that an original copy of this funk soul gem from 1978 often fetch close to four figures. Initially released on a little known label in Mississippi, Acid Jazz now give it the proper reissue treatment. It is filled with passionate soul songs that stride forward with purpose and pride. "Let Me Be Your Lover" is the breakout single that will get most club plays, but the sliding hi hats and twangy bass of "Gonna Find A True Love" will also do plenty of damage. The version included here is slightly different to the single that was reissued earlier this year, but is well worthy of its inclusion.

It takes in a well-curated and eclectic selection of definitive tracks from the genre's heyday that all perfectly capture the essence of the movement which is defined by its infectious rhythms, jazz melodies, and silky beats. Along the way, there are non-stop funky basslines and energetic brass sections. There are five originals here as well as her collab with White and it makes for a fine statement of soul from this classic artist.
