Review: The French group Lowland Brothers Band offers up more of its signature blend of soul, rock and Americana in what is a superbly liberating and timeless second album, Over The Fence. Their 2021 self-titled debut was led by Nico Duportal on vocals and guitars with Hugo Deviers on percussion and guitar and Max Genouel on bass and keyboards and between them, they uniquely bridged these sounds as well as an earthy take on Americana despite the band originally hailing from the West and North of France. It remains a fine set, with Maxwell's brilliant vocals - occasionally fragile and heartfelt, sometimes bolder and breezier, and always dripping in soul - perfectly complimenting his backing band's warm, rich and evocative soul grooves. Prior to the turn of the century, they'd only released one single, 'From Time' - an impeccable-quality UK boogie tune meditating on the passage of time and its mediation on an important romantic relationship. Review: Over the last few years, German deep funk heroes the Mighty Mocambos have taken to capturing their live performances - not just at concerts, but also record shop 'in-store' sessions and soundchecks - via a mobile recording studios. Scenarios, their self-proclaimed 'live album with a twist', features some of their favourite recordings. What makes it extra-special - aside from the quality of the music, of course - is that it features acoustic and semi-acoustic fare (composed for and performed in a lockdown live stream) as well as the heavyweight, floor-friendly jams that we know and love them for. Review: The Modulations released their album It's Rough Out Here in 1975, not only impressing both industry and laity with the singles 'Rough Out Here and 'I Can't Fight Your Love', but also spurring the considerable career of a funk quartet whose merit outdoes their reputation alone. The Modulations recorded extensively with MFSB, the house band of the famed record label Philadelphia International; these sessions yielded this album, one considered a gem of 1970s soul music. Exemplary of the long, wistful titles of the Philly funk era and beyond, the titular roughness of the record is also nonetheless embedded in a sea of audible Romance; the Modulations' hard knocks don't exclude the necessity of letting emotion in, with 'Head On Collision With Heartbreak' being an indelible example of this sense of being swept up in one's own emotions in the face of heartbreak, away from the perseverance aesthetics of "gritty" realism one might expect from a title like this.

Review: Two-time Grammy Awards winner, MTV Video Award veteran, Brit nominee and icon of the 1980s. Robert Palmer's name may not be as familiar as it once once at the height of music video broadcasting - when his anthem of excess and glamour, 'Addicted To Love', was either fresh off the presses, circa 1986, or still being rolled out as one of the most defining pop clips of all time. Suffice to say, our world - our cultural universe - has shifted since then, and the Batley, West Yorkshire-born, Malta-raised legend isn't necessarily the first artist on your lips when someone asks why the lights are on when nobody's home. That's a crying shame, as beyond that most famous of his tracks there's a big oeuvre to explore. Review: In 2019, soul legend P.P. Arnold made a powerful comeback with The New Adventures of... P.P. Arnold, her first studio album in decades. It saw her lay down some killer collaborations with Paul Weller, Steve Cradock, The Specials, and her son Kojo Samuel, and as such the album earned widespread praise. Only emerging themselves a year before, Rollets blended disco, boogie and pop and caught a pivotal moment in Lima's music scene during the democratic transition. Their hit 'Patinando' gave them national recognition, but their album features a range of sophisticated tracks from disco anthems to boogie with soft rock influences. Review: Jackie Ross had a storied career that began when the great Sam Cooke recruited her for his SAR label in 1962. After that, she went on to sing with Syl Johnston's band and sign with the notorious Chess label in 1964. It was there she dropped her biggest hit 'Selfish One', which reached number 11 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, before many more tunes came on the likes of Brunswick and others. Her 1980 album A New Beginning For was produced by Chicago soul scene mainstay James Van Lear and now gets its first reissue courtesy of P-Vine. It shows the range and depth of emotion Jackie could tap into with a mix of slow motion stirrers and more funky and upbeat numbers.

It is a superb collection of the band's best studio cuts alongside a number of live recordings, all made back in the seventies.
