Review: Modern Finnish doom metal legends Reverend Bizarre only released three full-lengths during their tenure which ran for just over a decade from 1995-2007, and how they were full to the brim, often nearly exceeding the runtime of a CD. Following on from 2002's epic debut In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend (yes, that is a King Crimson reference), 2005's II: Crush The Insects boasted a more upbeat approach to their fuzzed-out, psych-tinged doomgazing machinations, with original copies of the album even bearing a sticker that referred to the trio as "The Biggest Sell-Out in True Doom". Known for having its 21 minute lead single 'Slave of Satan' cut down to 13 minutes in order to fit on the LP, this marks one of the rare instances where a band's single version exceeds the length of their album version. Coming courtesy of leading metal label Svart, this translucent red 2xLP reissue offers doomers, new and old, the chance to plumb the depths of one of the most quintessential doom acts to ever rear their sludgy head.

Review: Child's album Soul Murder is a strong vintage blend of blues and hard rock, displaying the band's raw emotion and powerful musicality. With subtle nods to Black Sabbath and 60s psychedelia, the album delivers a unique sound that resonates deeply with listeners. Tracks like 'Free and Humble' and 'Trouble With a Capital 'T'' exude moody blues vibes, with Mathias Northway's exceptional vocals leading the way. The rhythm section, comprised of Michael Lowe on drums and Rhys Kelly on bass, provides a solid foundation for Northway's exquisite guitar work. Standout tracks like 'Standing On My Tail' and 'Feels Like Hell' reveal the band's versatility, incorporating soulful elements and edgy bass lines to create dynamic compositions. 'Moment In Time' delivers both anger and melancholy in equal measure. Overall, Soul Murder is a very strong album for fans of blues, hard rock and honest songwriting, due mainly to Child's impeccable musicianship and emotive performances.

Review: Child's reissue of Blueside is a transcendent journey into the heart of psychedelic blues. With their second LP, they amplify their fuzzy blues sound, infusing it with a stimulating drive and hypnotic allure. Tracks like 'Nailed to the Ceiling' and 'Blue Side of the Collar' exude chill yet sludgy nostalgia, while 'Dirty Woman' and 'The Man' take seductive, gospel-infused approaches, reminiscent of Robert Johnson. Child's wisdom in crafting psychedelic acid blues music sets them apart, marking a true revival of the genre. Child continues to defy expectations with each release, consistently pushing the boundaries of their music. Blueside showcases their evolution, surpassing previous efforts with ease. This Australian trio stands out as leaders in their field, setting a high standard for others to follow. Don't miss out on the brilliance of Blueside.

Review: Five years after their debut full length and two years after the 'Monolith of Corrosion' EP, Nightmarer are finally back with a new album. Inarguably the band's most diverse work to date, 'Deformity Adrift' ventures far beyond the conventions of the already unconventional genre of dissonant death metal, without surrendering an ounce of viciousness. A 32-minute sonic behemoth, the record is at once confounding and ravaging. Strong nuances of industrial and doom metal can be heard throughout as the record's nine tracks conclude fittingly with a suffocating wall of sound that leaves its listeners bruised, battered and shaken.

Review: Tresor joins forces with Carhartt - a company that can trace its roots back to the Motor City - to celebrate techno's two premier cities, Detroit and Berlin. The formula is devilishly simple: brand new cuts from artists based in one of the two cities, with stone-cold legends being joined by rising stars. There are headline-grabbing contributions from Juan Atkins as Model 500 (the warped, alien, dub-flecked and Cybotron-esque electrofunk of 'I.D.L.E') and DJ Stingray 313 (the industrial electro clank of 'Dynamic Instability'), plus fine contributions from JakoJako (the early morning techno hypnotism of 'Metal Goat'), AMX (the wonderfully hazy, deep and dubbed-out electro shuffle of 'Your Body') and Erik Jabari (the mind-mangling modular madness of 'Screamore').

Review: The convergence of Nebula and Black Rainbows for their split album In Search Of The Cosmic Tale: Crossing The Galactic Portal is a monumental event in the heavy psych scene. Released under Gabriele Fiori's Heavy Psych Sounds label, this collaboration marks the 300th entry in its catalog, making it a significant milestone for both bands. The album features three tracks from each band, offering a potent dose of heavy rock spanning 32 minutes. Nebula, revered pioneers of heavy psych, contribute three newly recorded songs that build upon their recent releases 'Holy Shit' and 'Transmission From Mothership Earth.' Meanwhile, Black Rainbows unleash three tracks selected from their sessions for the acclaimed Superskull album, released in 2023. Their contribution includes two blistering stoner rock tracks and a heavy space-infused tune. The cover art, crafted by the talented Simon Berndt, perfectly encapsulates the cosmic atmosphere of the album. With its raw energy and sonic exploration, In Search Of The Cosmic Tale: Crossing The Galactic Portal promises an exhilarating journey through the depths of heavy psych rock. This collaboration is a rare treat for fans within the genre.

Review: Raymond Richards emerges once again as a musical maestro in Sand Paintings, displaying his unparalleled mastery of the pedal steel. Teaming up with Calexico's John Convertino and an array of eclectic instrumentalists, Richards delves deeper into his contemplative sonic world. From the courageous chords of 'Badwater Basin' to the dramatic landscapes of 'Monument Valley' and 'Saguaro,' each track resonates with emotional depth and cultural richness. While the album expands into grand cinematic gestures, there's a stoic singularity pervading throughout - a lonesome cowboy facing the elements with unwavering resolve. Despite the visceral intensity, a cloaked vulnerability emerges, revealing a profound connection to the world. Sand Paintings is not merely an album; it's a journey through landscapes of sound and emotion, guided by Richards' transcendent vision and honesty.

Message From A Black Man
Review: The debut album from Mississippi soul legends The Natural Four, Good Vibes! deserves this full reissue on Wax Trader, which puts a dent in its former obscurity and rareness. An early LP incarnation of Chris James, Allen Richardson, John January and Al Bowden in unison, the album delivers the posi-vibes it promises and then some. But despite its commitment to a good time, the Four don't fall prey to the idea that such vibes necessarily mean avoiding of slow jams; indeed, star cuts like 'Why Should We Stop Now' are as pleading and longing in tone as they are premonitory of the relationship at hand going well; things get even wild-Wester on 'Message From A Black Man', amounting to a multifaceted take on the stated good vibe.

Review: Man In Black may be the 38th album by country singer Johnny Cash, but it is definitely one of the most memorable albums in his discography. The album is perhaps one of Cash's most political albums, with the title nodding at Cash's tendency to wear only black during his live shows. This was to reflect the turbulent times during the Vietnam War; a message also reflected in the album's lyrics, from the singles 'Man in Black' to 'Singin' In Viet Nam Talkin' Blues', both of which can be seen as his most important protest songs. All this makes the album a unique milestone in his career and still a must for all Johnny Cash fans. Man in Black is available as a limited edition of 2500 individually numbered copies on crystal-clear vinyl.

Review: Disco Tape is a nascent new V/A series from Italy's Sound Exhibitions, whose stated M.O. is to release alternative dance music and have it reach keen ears. Now with over a decades' worth of experience under their belts, the collective continue to trailblaze with a unique quantity of house trax, seven to be exact, smushed onto LP. Two contributions from current favourite Mosaik, 'You Make Me' and 'Jazz In Sermenin', do well to play up house's endemic crispiness, whether that's heard in a characteristic shaker or clap sound; Kozmik Funk and John De La Noise, meanwhile, deliver ample contrast to this with dusky chordwork and acid jazz explorations respectively, facilitating an ultimately varied, compelling hat-trick for the series.

Review: Veteran electrohead and former artist on the Rephlex Records roseter DMX Krew's Ed DMX takes the well-known story by Jorge Luis Borges of The Library of Babel, said to contain all the different languages of the earth. Some deep philosophical thought has gone into the album's concept, but we'll leave that to Ed to explain. Instead, we'll tell you that from beginning to end there's plenty of the kind of trademark 80s synth playfulness in evidence, with a generally more mellow and soundtrack-related rather than frenetic and dancefloor-filling vibe in evidence, even on faster tracks like 'The Combed Thunderclap'. Still, Ed knows what he's doing when it comes to this kind of leftfield electro gear, and it's a rewarding, never boring listen.

Review: Perhaps snatching the crown for best North of England band name since English Teacher, Bored At My Grandmas House (the singer-songwriter project of Leeds-based musician Amber Strawbridge) presents a fresh new album, Show, Don't Tell, following the titular mantra to an absolute T, across a beautifully recorded 12-track indie album that indeed poses more questions than it answers (in a great way). With its subject matters candid (earning trust, social reticence, general early-twenties angst) and its song structures bite-sized, the overarching style is Bedroom Pop with capital Bs and Ps, blowing the rest of the competition out of the bunkbed studio with its simple chorus treatments, hypnotic guitar riffs and deft instrumental contributions from bassist and producer Alex Greaves and drummer Niall Summerton.

Review: The glorious Dobro label gets to double figures in fine style here with a new album that finds Iner both going solo and collaborating with Oiuna on four new cuts which then get remixed. The originals are summery, airy, organic worlds of gentle deep house rhythms, feathery synth melodies and gentle hooks that have a subtle future feel. The remixes rework the tunes for more direct vibes in the club with Frank Music label head Johannes Albert going first and then Crowd Control also stepping up. Great artwork, too.

Review: Girls In Synthesis' album Sublimation marks a daring departure from their previous works, showing a band unafraid to explore new sonic territories. With their third album, the London-based innovators redefine their sound, delivering an album that is both dark and angular yet infused with pop sensibilities. The lead single 'Lights Out' offered the first listen into the band's evolution, blending Barrett-esque vocals and guitar melodies with a high-intensity blitz reminiscent of Faust Tapes. Divided into two distinct sections, the track captures the essence of late-night anxiety and transitions seamlessly into a driving, drum 'n' bass-infused rhythm. Recorded at Sick Room Studios with engineer Owen Turner, the album reflects a departure from the band's DIY ethos, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the creative process. Tracks like 'Deceit' and 'We Are Here' are on the melodic side of Girls In Synthesis, while maintaining their signature intensity. Lyrically, the band delves deep into themes of anxiety, self-reflection, and human relationships, eschewing superficial sloganeering for poetic introspection. Girls In Synthesis offer a unique sound within the alternative music spectrum.

It consists of Udacha label head Alexey Kalik as well as drummer Roman Shestaev and Gamayun associates Anton Dvoenko and Stas Mitrofanov and they all got together in the studio in Moscow in summer 2023 and the results are now presented on this new album. Employing an organic music approach to instrumentation combined with subtle electronics, the group go wild for various combinations of off-kilter percussion, organ, chant and birdsong in full ceremonial swing, they trace a path through the various branches of 20th century minimalism, pan-global folk-ism's and the harmonious collective consciousness that My Life In A Bush Of Ghosts encapsulated. It's a gorgeous mix of world, jazz, spiritual percussive, experimental music that rides on nice loose and vibrant rhythms with a great mix of synthetic and organic sounds all offering plenty for the mind as well as the body to get excited about.

Tracks like 'Street By Street' show her lo-fi, soulful style, earning praise from the likes of Billie Eilish and Willow Smith. Throughout the EP, Laufey's vocals evoke legendary singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, bridging the gap between generations. "Someone New" seamlessly blends jazz flows with modern beats, offering relatable lyrics for the younger generation. The EP culminates with the playful 'Best Friend,' showcasing Laufey's dexterity and promise as an artist. At just 21 years old when this was written in 2020, Laufey demonstrates remarkable skill and maturity on Typical of Me, setting the stage for a bright future in music. Review: Legendary emo indie outfit The Cure have played all over the world in their decorated careers but back in 1996 when they headed to Brazil, it was the first time they had been to the country since 1988. They were there for the 1996 edition of the Hollywood Rock Festival which they headlined in superb fashion and wowed their Latin American fans. Live Lullabies & Other Bedtime Stories is a special recording of that night that comes on nice yellow vinyl and features the likes of signature anthems like 'Boys Don't Cry,' 'Friday I'm In Love,' 'Just Like Heaven' and many more.

Review: The Jesus & Mary Chain - Peel Sessions 84/86 offers a riveting glimpse into the evolution of the iconic noise pop band across four recording sessions for John Peel's BBC show. These sessions capture the band at various stages of their early sonic development, showcasing their signature blend of classic pop, noise, punk, psychedelia and garage rock. Each track serves as a testament to the band's innovative and influential sound, presenting a raw and unfiltered expression of their musical vision. With its combination of infectious melodies and gritty noise textures, this collection stands as a perfect document of The Jesus & Mary Chain's essential contribution to the alternative music landscape of the 1980s.

Review: In the pantheon of prog rock landmarks, none come bigger than The Dark Side Of The Moon. Pink Floyd's magnum opus struck the perfect balance between grandiose vision and universal appeal, carrying relatable themes alongside innovative production and providing the fuel for any psychedelically-minded listener to trip out on a precision crafted trip. As the album celebrates its 50th birthday, this stellar recording of a full live performance of Dark Side... from Wembley in 1974 is seeing its first pressing on vinyl. It's faithful to the album in Floyd's exacting way, but it's also a revelation to hear such a wide scope of sound recreated on stage, not least the likes of 'On The Run'. A fascinating insight into the legacy of a towering, seminal work in the history of modern music.

Review: It's 1990 and Depeche Mode couldn't really be riding much higher in the global music stakes. Having just released Violator, the band had finally debuted an album inside the Billboard Top 10 for the first time in their almost-decade-long history, and pretty much anyone who came into contact with the record was very quickly captivated by its sound. While definitely not a curveball, it marked an expansion of the group's existing style. Some have described it as synth-pop, others alternative rock. In many ways, it's a dance floor album, one that embraces goth and coldwave at its very core. Captured during their tour at that time, Set In Stone features landmark singles from the LP - 'Personal Jesus', of course, and 'World In My Eyes' - it also proves beyond any doubt that a Depeche Mode show is about more than simply playing the hits.

Review: Unusual Object by Josh Johnson is a sonic masterpiece that blends cyberpunk ambient jazz with modern avant-garde compositions. Johnson's fantastically processed saxophone, combined with subtle samples and grooves, creates an intimate listening experience that draws the listener into his world of sound. With nods to classic Warp Records and Jon Hassell's dreamworld tonalities, Johnson establishes himself as a contemporary force in the avant-garde music scene. The album showcases Johnson's indelible elegance and his ability to craft stately, personal compositions that resonate with listeners.

Review: Hailing from London's East End, there's few Oi-punk outfits who were as quintessential or authentic as The 4-Skins. While only releasing a small handful of albums with their definitive 80s line up, this live/demo/unreleased cuts compilation offers an aural fly-on-the-wall experience of being confronted with their signature brand of seething anti-authoritarian, anti-police brutality, anti-fascist, football loving, skinhead sporting, Doc Marten stomping punk in real time. Packed with cuts pulled from radio sessions, Bumper sessions, demos and even two tracks from a previously unreleased 7" 45, including the ska-punk-inflected 'Seems To Me'; offering a more subdued side to the OG Skins than most long-time fans would be accustomed to.

Review: The latest reissued compilation of 4 Skins' greatest works contains the hits and misses of the band at the height of the oi! era, which evolved in tandem with their breakout success and helped them along more than a fair little. From the opening jump of 'One Law For Them' and 'Evil', twin charges of unrelenting chant-punk and brawly sonic brashness, to the latter-siders 'A.C.A.B.' and 'I Don't Wanna Die', as well as a second Bumper Session of 'Evil', this retrospective harks back to a distinct early 80s subculture - as well as a band who, in their concern for police brutality and social injustice, defy common misconceptions of skinheads as all bad.

This new album is a mere 8 track weirdo's favourite, straight from the brains of this techno-toned, post-dub power duo, from the psytech clicks and claps of 'Wow Picasso' to the worse-for-wear machinations of 'No Speed Limit'. Review: Dadaphonic has a key reissue on their hands with Cranes debut album Fuse. The Cranes was a groundbreaking alternative band from New Hampshire that was led by the brother and sister duo Alison Shaw & Jim Shaw. Their popularity grew as the late 80s turned in the early 90s culminating with an opening slot on The Cure's Wish Tour in 1992. Perfectly blending with Cure in many respects, the Cranes would be re-labeled as Dream Pop in retrospect. Fuse was originally put out in 1986 as a cassette only album. Strangely, 38 years later it was still not brought out on other formats. Until now! This album shows the band in its infant stage honing their craft while longtime fans love the rawness of their early days. This album was remastered for this release to celebrate Fuse finally getting a wider release. Fans of dreampop, goth and alternative music will extremely interested in this important release.

Review: Jazzman Records' curatorial moniker Greasy Mike delivers a seventh compilation in his eponymous beatnik jazz series. At The Beatnik Cafe follows up former visits to the Tropical Island, the Chinese Takeaway, and the Halloween haunted house for a trip back in time and place to 1950s New York, netting the sonic essence of the Beat generation. Predominantly comprising swing, bebop and hard bop recorded during and at the turn of the following decade, we're smitten at the likes of Harvey Anderson's 'Monday Night At 8PM', The Seven Arts Beat Society's 'New York Havana', and Cindy Laine's 'Whispering Wind', all of which amount to prototypical, quiet cafe-bound storms, and the perfect complements for free-assocative poetry composition and goatee grooming.

Greatest hits in the late Camden-native's catalogue played live with a 6 piece band, 16 classics like 'Tears dry on their own' and 'Back to black' from her 2 albums are pressed on this double LP. Review: Along with the likes of Today & Tomorrow and Untitled (God), Sault are giving their five-deep album drops from late 2022 a more ceremonious release now. The music is too deep and rich to vanish into the melee of digital data streams, and each album's distinct qualities benefits from its own space to inhabit. On a mission from God and steeped in a raw, 70s kind of sound which shirks studio slickness in favour of absolute reality, on Earth this British outfit take themselves into realms of spiritual jazz atop their keen instinct for funk. The drums tumble, the chants murmur, and there's just no arguing with the power of the ensemble and their in-the-room vibe.

Review: From the early 1970s, Tim Maia released a string of superb albums that cemented his reputation as Brazilian music's most soulful artist - a guitarist and singer who created thrilling new musical hybrids that owed as much to U.S funk and soul as samba, bossa-nova and MPB. 1975's "Racional Volume 2", a hard-to-find set that's finally been reissued, is one of the best of Maia's key early albums. Rhythmically, the majority of the tracks feature typically shuffling South American rhythms, but the instrumentation and vocals above are far closer in tone to the sunnier, more horn-heavy end of the soul and funk spectrum (with some sweeping orchestration thrown in to add a touch of MPB class). It's a brilliant blend that guarantees good times from start to finish.

The contrast between raw, speedy new wave anthems like 'Boy's Don't Cry' and '10:15 Saturday Night', the epic gothfest 'A Forest' and the cuter pop idiosycracities of 'The Caterpillar' show how quickly the Crawley gang evolved in their early days. Obviously, they had a long way to go after this, but many would say this is The Cure at their absolute finest.

Review: Tyler Daley is a UK hip-hop mainstay and the vice of the brilliant Children of Zeus. Here he branches out with his own solo album, Son of Zeus - see what he did there? It comes on the band's home label of First World and bares plenty of their signature sonic hallmarks - dusty, undercooked production, lazy hip hop beats, and gorgeous vocals that sit somewhere between neo soul, golden era boom-bap from Tribe and something else a little unique. It's a warm world where yearning bars, lush harmonies and hooky melodies all float around the stripped back but bumping beats. Superb stuff.

Review: They're the biggest but most hated band on the planet, but that will never stop Coldplay. The band has long been at the top of the pop-rock world and once again Music of the Spheres is likely to keep them there. It is an album rather less wrought with emotional tension than they are known for but still has one eye firmly on the cosmos, like much of their material. In fact, there is a loose concept here that revolves around a distant solar system. The lead single, 'My Universe,' features K-pop kings BTS and is already a number one, and the rest of the tunes are so unashamedly big they will likely follow.

Review: Originally released in 1984 and celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, Initium would serve as the debut full-length from death-rock horror-punk outfit Samhain; the brainchild of Glenn Danzig (or Evil Elvis). Opting to disband Misfits in favour of redirecting his creative juices into a project he maintained more rigid control over, with the title even translating from Latin to English as "beginning", the LP marked a simultaneous embracing of more metallic, gothic rock and malevolent balladry, distancing itself from the Misfits' breakneck hardcore chaos. Arriving less than a full year after Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood, the transitional growing pains are evident with deep cut 'Archangel' being originally penned with Misfits bassist Jerry Only, while 'Horror Biz' is actually a re-worked version of the early Misfits single 'Horror Business'. Featuring Minor Threat guitarist Lyle Preslar on several tracks, along with Reagan Youth bassist Al Pike making a singular appearance, four decades on Initium continues to resonate as a vital piece of punk rock/deathrock/horror-punk history with its laying of influential foundations.

While the album showcases the band's penchant for slow-building intros and dreamy soundscapes, that rewards patience listeners. 'Water' stands out as a refreshing departure, with its immediate presence and energetic vibe, encapsulating the album's titular message with conviction. Despite the album's tendency towards extended intros and gradual crescendos, tracks like 'Evidence' resonate deeply with their melancholic undertones. Ultimately, while Lo Moon's sophomore release offers moments of brilliance, it may shine most with people who like their music with a lot of depth. A pop album with depth that may surprise most.

The Martinique-born pianist had made a string of memorable guest appearances and released two well-regarded albums before he set foot in Media Sound Studio in New York City in February '75. The resultant set, recorded with local jazz and funk musicians, has long been an in-demand record on both the jazz and jazz-funk scenes. The tracks touch on both, as well as contemporaneous modal jazz. While bassist Richard Davis and drummer Billy Hart play their part, it's Sardaby who is the real star, delivering a thrilling range of riffs and solos on piano and Fender Rhodes.

Review: We Out Here, Brownswood Recordings' latest compilation, was born out of a desire by label boss Gilles Peterson to capture the essence of London's contemporary jazz scene. To ensure a sense of there "here and now", Peterson invited some of the city's brightest young bands and musicians into the studio in August 2017, recording the results over three action-packed days. The resulting never-heard-before tracks are, for the most part, joyous and thrilling, and range from trad jazz, jazz-funk and Latin jazz to acoustic-electronic fusions and groovy, guitar-laden downtempo explorations. It feels like a glimpse of a scene on the rise, and we wouldn't be surprised if many of those involved become modern British jazz greats in the years to come.

Review: A work that surely needs little to no introduction, 'Repeater', was the seminal debut full-length from post-hardcore visionaries, Fugazi. From the demise of emo pioneers, Rites Of Spring, and hardcore punk godfathers, Minor Threat, came the enigmatic pairing of Guy Picciotto and Ian MacKaye, with the latter's burgeoning artistry left fully untethered to conjure a work transcendent of post-hardcore or alternative rock. Mapping out the blueprint for punk and alternative music throughout the nineties, even predating the likes of Nirvana's 'Nevermind', or Pearl Jam's 'Ten'; few projects have stood the test of time or been cited as such an integral influence by a dynamic range of artists from Rage Against The Machine to The Dillinger Escape Plan to American Football. Aggressive, expansive and highly critical of issues still plaguing our world today, from drug abuse to greed and privatisation, the ethos of, 'Repeater', (quietly referencing The Beatles' 'Revolver') has only swollen with time.

Review: Larry Heard once said that he stumped upon his trademark dusty deep house sound rather by mistake - he was simply trying to recreate the instrumental disco of his childhood on the limited machinery he had available at the time. Either way, he went on to explore and exploit its most spiritual and spine-tinging aspects across a faultless discography that often looks to the cosmos for inspiration. That is true of this second volume of his Around The Sun album on his own Alleviated Records. It's another fine showcase of Chicago house, deep house, jazz and r&b that is utterly timeless.

Review: A fascinating collection of radio sessions throwing up expertly recorded alternate versions of songs from the end of the band's brief career, which was cruelly curtailed by the death of singer Ian Curtis in May 1980. Lovers of the band will recognise the tracklisting as mainly consisting of tracks from album number two Closer, where the experiments with electronics that would eventually change the world through New Order ultimately began, and the two versions of 'She's Lost Control' and an electronic drum-peppered 'Insight' for instance, show this process in progress. That said, the renditions of standalone singles 'Transmission' and 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', not to mention the funky but savage 'Sound of Music', show them simply in more straight forward guitar mode, but vastly sharpened up by constant touring compared to the band in evidence on their debut Unknown Pleasures.

Review: Dance pair Tom McFarland and Joshua Lloyd-Watson aka Jungle cut loose on this, their third and most evocative album to date. It is a record packed with the sort of good time grooves and wall to wall party tunes we all want to hear after such a dark 18 months or so. There are plenty of heart on sleeve tunes, hooky top lines and warm, soaring summer chords that are designed to be heard outdoors, on a massive festival sound system with thousands of people singing along next to you. Some slower, dubbed out rhythms provide a nice counter to stop things growing too saccharine, and overall it add up to a great listen.

Review: Joao Donato's Muito A Vontade is a superb trip into the heart of Brazilian jazz. Released in 1962, this record showcases Donato's virtuosity as a pianist and composer, blending samba rhythms with jazz harmonies in a seamless fusion. Tracks all come with vibrant melody and exemplify his unique style, brimming with infectious hooks and rhythmic vitality. With its laid-back charm and sophisticated arrangements, Muito A Vontade captures the essence of bossa nova's golden era as Donato's effortless musicality and inventive improvisations make this even more essential.

Review: When you look back at the first PlayStation several landmark releases spring to mind - Resident Evil, Tekken 2, Crash Bandicoot - the list could go on much longer and should definitely include Wipeout and Wipeout 2097. Both were renowned for combining high pace, futuristic visuals with contemporary electronic club music from some of the biggest producers and acts at the time. Less remembered, in Europe at least, is the Ape Escape series, an intense party-platform title which arguably has the greatest dance music game score of all time. Comprising six tracks from that saga, this compilation of Soichi Terada's soundtracks emphasises that bold point. Opening on the crisp, punchy techno drive of 'Specters Factory', we find ourselves in suitably spooky jungle ('Haunted House'), rumbling dnb ('Spectors Castle') and roughneck hardcore bass ('Coasters'), among other made up genres. A collection which resembles Terada's amazing 1996 album, Sumo Jungle and makes a case for the Japanese enigma as one of dance music's most underrated geniuses.

Review: Husband and wife singer-guitarist duo Lux Interior and Poison Ivy were the backbone and founding parents of The Cramps, whose lengthy career managed to outlive many of the formative-era punks they broke through with, first catapulting onto the New York gothabilly scene (well, arguably they invented it) circa 1976 and then only finally opting to call time in 2009, following the sad passing of Interior. During that tine, they inspired myriad garage, alternative, and heavy rock & roll bands that wanted to keep things minimal, and their work can still be considered as setting benchmarks today. Across this incredible collection of tracks, or rather Songs of Love & Hate captured live and on stage, the outfit certainly show exactly why their popularity was so long-lasting and their legacy so inimitable. You can hear elements of The Cramps in work from latter day legends such as Ezra Furman and Jim Jones, but ultimately there's nothing that comes remotely close the band themselves.

Review: The Minneapolis Uranium Club Band's Infants Under The Bulb album is an engaging journey through unbridled punk creativity and raw guitar energy. Released amidst their hometown's vibrant underground scene, the album defies categorisation in the way it blends elements of punk, post-punk and experimental rock. With relentless rhythms, angular guitar riffs and cryptic lyrics, each track unfolds in heavy and arresting fashion and the band's unconventional approach and uncompromising attitude challenge listeners to embrace the unconventional throughout this most visceral of albums.
