Review: There's something special in the water here. The Knife's Olof Dreijer presents three sprawling tracks on a new EP marking the start of a fresh chapter in his career, with the opener, 'Coral', starting the scoring with a strange and captivating bit of what you might call micro-techno. A lo-fi kind of workout that marries beautiful harmonic tones with a hoover bass in a way that almost calls to mind 'Rainforest' era Mathew Johnson, only more organic and live feeling. Overleaf, so to speak, 'Flora' invites us to sit on a cloud of gentle strings and mesmerising noises, like reliving a precious but now-faint memory, delicate enough to break. Meanwhile, 'Hazel' takes us back down to Earth, its slowly unfolding, muffled steel drum melodies feeling strangely homely while also not of this place, this here and now.

Review: Taking his name from a now-submerged island in the Danube, Bucharest's hotly demanded composer Ada Kaleh prints another 12" that is sure to sell out like the others. This time, the single on the docket is Side B from his 2018 double single 'Roua Diminetti / O seara de ragaz', featuring two remixes from the likes of Norway's space-disco wizard Prins Thomas and Solid Groove's founder and Sheffield's finest Aubrey. The original single is a dark one to move to, a driving, subtle beat underpins the sensational percussion - perfect for the middle of the night. Aubrey takes things in a completely different direction, taking a far more noisy and in-your-face approach with a mysterious twist; Odd sounding percussion and synths fly in and out through the 'RMX' that give it an otherworldly feel. Thomas picks things up the only way he knows how, with his distinguishable brand of space-age techno-disco, the bassline giving this particular cut a production-line rhythm. Review: Adam's Bite is back with more tasty minimal and tech house morsels here as Red Pig Flower steps up for a quartet of tunes that head into all new realms. 'We Need Space' is a busy, multi-layered mix of sleek synths and metallic drums sound with paranoid vocals weaving their way in and out. After an instrumental version comes 'Separation', a more heavy and heady roller with bleeping synth sequences and bumpy drum funk sure to lock in the late-night dancers. Last of all is 'The Feeling' with a rich and rubbery low end that is topped by alluring vocals smears and wiggling leads.

Review: Keeping the house flavour bedded into minimal since the mid 00s, Audio Werner has long perfected a sleek, sublime style which maintains some 20 years in. On this new drop for Adam's Bite he's on superlative form, teasing out the most perfectly sustained double bass groove with just the barest of essentials for company on 'Deepozzarella' and then making everything sound so soulful in the process. 'Chordlift' opts for an airier tone, riding a more fractured groove that kicks tougher than most Audio Werner jams. Review: In terms of being an afrobeat legend, Pasteur Lappe is Cameroon's Fela Kuti, an unsung hero who was ahead of the game back in the 1970s and 1980s, and one whose been famous for burning the pockets of many diggers nowadays. Luckily, Africa Seven have compiled some of his best work onto a ten-track LP, ranging from the funky oddities of "More Sekele Movement" or "Na Real Seke Fo'ya", to the future-zouk sound of "Sanaga Calypso", and plenty of jazzy, popped-out, disgruntled soulfulness to satisfy anyone from Gilles Peterson to Cherrystones. Review: A genuine meeting of minds here, as rising star (and Real Gang Records founder) Danny Miller joins forces with long-serving deep, dubby and techy house maestro Jay Tripwire. What's on offer is undeniably alluring: a three-track salvo built around deep, hypnotic, sub-heavy grooves and wonderfully wayward and wonky electronics. The trippy and mind-altering nature of the duo's combined sound is best exemplified by A-side 'Cut001', where lo-fi bleeps, echoing analogue electronics and ghostly chords wrap around crunchy machine drums and deep sub-bass. They opt for an even more sparse, druggy and dubbed-out tech-house sound on 'Cut002', before joining the dots between bleep, Paul Woolford's 'Erotic Discourse' and Tripwire's dub-fired house sounds on 'Cut003'.

Deep House
Review: Brixton-based David Agrella returns after the success of his Baby Ford-remixed 'Modulo 02', with two tracks and a nifty remix of each to boot. 'I Felt It Coming' is a heady peak time track, with Underground Resistance-style drum machine handclaps and an addictive synth hook and all the suspense and drama of a Stephen King horror tale. Domenico Rosa's remix turns that frown upside down, converting it into a perky, cheeky and altogether lighter workout that nevertheless will keep feet on the dancefloor. 'Reflexion Nocturna' (Priori remix) kicks off the B-side with fizzling dub techno stealth, subtly embellished with a smidgeon of 'Funky Drummer' breakbeat, while Agrella's original closes proceedings with head down, echo-set Leftfield-style prog house skank. Not for nothing is this chap known as one of the techno scene's fastest rising new names.

Review: French-German duo Nina Harker are made up of Apolline Schoser and Nocola Henry, who have been testing at the fringes of folk across intermittent albums with an introverted brilliance about them. Now they make a cosy home on Aguirre Records with this extended excursion into their strange sound world, where skewed finger picking and disembodied vocal snatches lope around in a distorted soup, only for Schoser's singing to cut through the mix and bring your focus into a re-calibrated present. It's considered chaos played out with patience, constantly delivering the unexpected and leaving a strong impression from its very first notes to the last.

The other is a collaboration with Eddie Logix and this is a solo outing, Social Moment. It is a four-track electro exploration that kicks off with 'Who Want Me', a spacious funk workout with smeared synths and driving bass. The title track brings hints of Detroit to the arrangement and 'Mad Dog Mood' brings lashings of acid and techno to a pulsating low end while closer 'Find Another' rocks back and forth on feathery drums with fizzing melodica leads.

Review: Akka & BeepBeep is a new label from the US that is dropping its first two EPs simultaneously on Valentine's Day. Joradesilver is behind one, and also feature sin collaborative mode on this other 12". It opens with 'King David', a hi-tek house sound with soul drenched pads and tightly programmed drums and bass. 'Mango Strut' slows right down to dubbed out house with clattering percussion and the sound of spacecraft, then 'June Buggy' gets funky with more twitchy cosmic synths and a nice organic house groove. 'Callin' Dybbs' is a deep and smoky closer for the backroom with a sublime sax line drifting throughout.

Forever ahead of the game, Hidden Agenda's role in leftfield jungle soul has been undeniable and hugely influential since the mid-90s and it's amazing to see Jason back now and on such a maverick edge. Both of these cuts hit with a unique vibe and flavour that's so refreshing to hear. 'Dust' is a psychedelic wonderland that slides along with shimmering layers of percussion, guitar and keys. Originally released in 2019, here we find the drums super zooped up with a few twists to the bassline and energy. Flip for the aptly titled 'Pain'. Originally a collab with Stretch back in 2015, here we find it under complete VIP scrutiny with full rebuilt on that face melting bass. What a wallop.

Review: ]Jesse Maas career making dance music is relatively short but is building a good buzz about his strong work on his last few releases especially. JSS222 is the first EP he has made for the Aku label. The production is killer on this EP overall so expect this 12" to rock the dancefloor without hesitation. If you have any doubt, just go straight for the A2 upbeat, tech house banger 'On You'. This kind of work reminds of key Derrick Carter business. Chicago styled tech house that isn't scared to have vocals but they really rock the house crowd at a techno crowds' speed. 'Yamasa' sounds like something you would hear on Poker Flat records. 'Make It' adds a bit of progressive house feel to close the EP out. In all, this EP is guaranteed to do some work on the dancefloors that hear these. Have no fear, Jesse Maas is here!

Review: Since establishing itself in 2012, the Al-Tone Edits series has proved to be an excellent source of obscurist reworks, with label bosses Alvin Delk and Tony Fields guaranteeing material that's effortlessly soulful, and righteously dancefloor-friendly. This sixth edition in the series focuses on the world of gospel, offering a quartet of reworks of praise-worthy soul, funk and disco jams. First up is the trumpet-laden funk-soul skip of "Mad Dash", before "My Soul" provides some choral gospel vocals, spacey synths and deliciously rubbery slap bass. Flip for the killer gospel-disco hustle of "U" - all impassioned vocals, parping horns, hustling bass and sinewy strings, and the intergalactic synthesizer assault that is "Worship".

Review: Ukrainian DJ and producer Koloah makes a frank and mechanical style of electro, exemplified easily by his latest 'Persian Haze' EP for Alien Communications. He's also otherwise known as Tropical Echobird and Voin Oruwu, two remarkably inventive aliases to say the least, but the Koloah alias is certainly his main node. Breaking from former collabs with the likes of Nocow, Pixelord, and Vakula, the EP is stark and guttural; our highlight has to be 'Don't Mess Up', which leans most into the more minimal side of his palette, its backing pads resounding like glassy refractions heard in an infinitely mechanistic astral plane.

For electro-breaks fans, this record could be seen as a journey which originated in the German-inspired Florida scene before eventually finding its way back to Spain.
