Review: It's been two full decades since thousands were first introduced to the Spanish guitar slowcore indie-folk inflections of Swedish songsmith Jose Gonzalez, who received one of the best widescale launching pads by having his now iconic rendition of The Knife's 'Heartbeats' featured in an advert for the Sony Bravia LCD TV, which featured a myriad of hypnotising, colourful bouncy balls cascading down a sloping hill. While many at the time were unaware of the track's electro-pop origins, it served as an ideal introduction to the minimal, heartfelt and almost genre-less atmospherics that would make up Gonzalez's much adored debut full-length Veneer. Celebrating its 20 year anniversary with a remastered expansion complete with a second LP live album taken from a 2003 performance in Gothenburg, as well as a hand-numbered gatefold sleeve, a 24-page booklet of archival photos, essays and a song-by-song guide from the man himself, this is the ultimate collector's edition of a much adored, understated work which has since aged like a fine wine within the modern realms of indie-post-folk meanderings.

Review: Peacefrog Records' Japanese offshoot is currently serving up reissues of Moodymann's various classic albums of the late '90s and early 2000s. The series has now reached 2000's 'Forevernevermore', the legendary Detroit producer's third full-length excursion. Beginning with the hypnotic, locked-in Afro-house of 'Meanwhile Back At Home', the set sees Moodymann flit between weirdo interludes ('Wednesday Night People'), analogue-rich beatdown wooziness ('The Set Up'), hybrid deep house/techno eccentricity ('Track 4'), revivalist disco/jazz-funk (the superb 'Don't You Want My Love'), ultra-deep house ('Your Sweet Love', the awesome 'Tribute'), dusty gospel-house ('The Thief That Stole My Sad Days (Ya Blessin Me)'), and the kind of jazzy, thickset deep house brilliance that has always been the producer's stock-in-trade ('Forevernevermore').

Review: While all of Kenny Dixon Jr's albus as Moodymann are excellent, it's his turn-of-the-millennium work for Peacefrog that has arguably attained "timeless classic" status. The Detroiter arguably hit his creative peak on 1999's 'Mahogany Brown', which has now been reissued on CD by Peacefrog Japan. Rooted in his trademark dusty deep house style but blessed with additional jazz instrumentation (both new and sampled), spoken and sung vocal snippets aplenty, and nods to both disco and gospel, it's an emotive, impeccably produced treat. Picking highlights is therefore tough, but our current favourites include 'M.E.A.N.D.N.J.B', the ocean-deep shuffle of 'My & My Peoples Eyes', the effortlessly soulful 'Joe (Part III - feat Taz)' and the epically deep gospel-house builder 'Black Sunday'.

Review: To mark the album's 20th birthday, Kenny Dixon Junior's fourth Moodymann full-length has been reissued in Japan, with a few copies making it over to the UK. Like the Detroit veteran's other early albums, 'Silence In The Secret Garden' is a languid, jazz-flecked delight in which live instrumentation, distinctive vocals, loose-limbed drums and heady synthesizer textures rub shoulders with smoky, dusty deep house grooves, ambient interludes and more forthright club cuts. While it should be judged as a whole - and favourably - there are still staggeringly good highlights. These include the acid bass-propelled peak-time hypnotism of 'LiveInLA1998', the soulful deep house wonder of 'Shine', and the low-slung Motor City techno minimalism of 'On My Way Home'.

Review: Finding and buying original vinyl copies of Moodymann's brilliant second album, 1998's "Mahogany Brown", can be a costly business, so all praise to Peacefrog for offering up this much-needed reissue. Packed to the rafters with classic Kenny Dixon Junior material - see the woozy warmth of "Sunshine", where a children's choir rides a locked-in groove and jazzy electric piano solos, the sample-laden up-tempo bump of "MEANDNJB" and the sublime gospel house workout "Black Sunday" for starters - it's arguably the album that established the Detroit legend's trademark sound once and for all. When it comes to jazz-flecked deep house shot through with references to the history of black American music, there are few - if any - better albums.

Review: For an artist whose practise is so entrenched in the history of black music (one of his most famous antics saw him deck out an Detroit home with purple drapes and decor, as a tribute to Prince) Moodymann is an unmatched force. This latest clear vinyl reissue of his 2003 classic 'Silence In The Secret Garden' hears the grilled house trickster's best album in its best light, showing off all its string-laden, sax-improvving and roller disco-house angles. Originally released to much critical acclaim for its intelligence and no-fuss vignette style, choice bits like 'Backagainforthefirsttime?' and 'Shine' nail Moodymann's advanced production style, sexy in its reluctance to reveal itself straight away.

Review: Second time around for Moodymann's sought after Telephone EP, which first appeared in stores way back in 2001. As with the original pressing, the A-side boasts a typically eccentric, percussively complex and attractive re-make of "Forevernevermore", where twinkling piano motifs and simmering easy listening string samples rise above a dense and bubby rhythm track. At a little over five minutes, it's notably shorter and punchier than the epic original version. Arguably even better is flipside "Telephone Blue", a wonderfully deep and jazzy outing that sees the legendary Detroiter get busy with a Fender Rhodes over a shuffling deep house beat.

Moodymann's oeuvre continues to yield new gems on a yearly basis, but sometimes you've got to take it back to the classics. "Forevernevermore" was a landmark when it first landed in 2000, building on the promise of his earlier LPs to deliver an immaculate trip through the dreamiest corners of his idiosyncratic deep house vision. From the incantations of "Meanwhile Back At Home" to the early morning freak haze of "The Set Up", the quintessentially KDJ 'in-the-room' vibe of "The Thief That Stole My Sad Days" to the heavy edit funk of "Tribute" this is gold-standard Detroit house start to finish from one of the best to ever do it.

Review: Peacefrog's reissue series continues with another classic deep house album. Moodymann's Mahogany Brown first hit stores back in 1998, and arguably did more to define his trademark deep house sound than the album that preceded it, 1997's Silentintroduction (even if that did include the phenomenal "I Can't Kick This Feeling When It Hits"). Dusty, jazzy, warm and immaculately produced, Mahogany Brown is full of soft focus dancefloor gems. Tracks such as "Sunshine", "Me & My People's Eyes", the jazz guitar-laden "On The Run" and ultra-deep, gospel-driven "Black Sunday" remain amongst Kenny Dixon Junior's finest moments, and that's saying something. Basically, you need this in your life.

Review: Neil Landstrumm began his solo production in 1993, influenced by the Sheffield school of bleep as well as electro and Miami bass. His unique sound soon caught the ears of a wide variety of the world's finest electronic labels - going on to record for Tresor and Planet Mu among others and he remains one of the scene's innovators. Featured here are timeless classics such as "Takks" or "Sniff & Destroy" which nailed that similar kind of minimal funk that label mate Daniel Bell was creating at the time, through to the bang and clatter of frantic jams like "Swing/Jerk" and "Blam The Target" (Inhabit The Machines) which are still a true zeitgeist of early '90s UK techno.

Review: Ten Days Of Blue is John Beltran's second LP to date, from a distant-not-so-distant 1996, when a rush of neo-techno - on an intelligent tip - began to rush over the scene. The opening "Flex" is one of the greatest of its kind, a near 7 minute voyage of sparse drums, heavy bass and a level of euphoria that is close to match anywhere else. The truth is, however, that every tune on here is absolute fire, from the gentle IDM waves of "Collage Of Dream", the jazzed-out percussion of "Gutaris Breeze (6000km To Amsterdam)" and, of course, the knifty, pseudo d&b of "Ten Days Of Blue". There is so much more to explore, too, including the totally innovative techno of "Venim & Wonder". This gear really does sound like it was made the other day. Warmly recommended.

Review: Dan Curtin's 1994 album, The Silicon Dawn, is still a marvel even after 24 years of significant playback, and is still inspiring younger generations of producers who are interested in the more dystopian side of techno - very relevant, it seems. In fact, it would be fair to say that this LP has become a pinnacle of modern dance music, almost a framework for perfection, and it's not a surprise that it's absolutely killer from the very first track, "Intro", which kicks off a wild voyage into hyper-space. From "Parallel" to "A Flash In The Distance" there is plenty of deep-minded synth experimentation and acid bleeping, and this carries on through with the supremely modern "Population 2". It is a hard LP to describe in parts, precisely because it is so well interlocked, flowing from tune to tune with one single vision in mind - the outer realms of space and time. A true techno album, from a legend.

The only release ever that the Cleveland native released under the Apogee moniker, the four tracks on offer are representative of a golden era in Midwest American dance music - with Curtin's trademark touch throughout. From the epically funked-up acid odyssey "Sunrise On The 2nd Moon" to the emotive rave-breaks driven techno-soul of "Horizons Forgotten" on the A side: these two are certainly up there with anthems like Laurent Garnier "Acid Eiffel" or "The Dance" by Derrick May. Similarly on the flip, "Inside Above" sees the second wave icon channel the spirit of first wave innovators of Detroit. With its finely tuned and syncopated rhythm arrangements backed by evocative strings passages and the furious squall of that notorious little Roland box.

Review: By the time he released debut album Bump Talkin' in 1995, Paul Johnson was already an established figure on the Chicago house scene. He'd already released all manner of bumpin', forthright fare on such legendary labels as Cajual, Dance Mania and Djax-Up Beats, leading UK label Peacefrog to offer him an album deal. While many of his early singles were undeniably slamming, Bump Talkin' was an altogether more musically rich affair, with Johnson offering up a selection of warm, rich, jazz-flecked deep house cuts that have stood the test of time superbly. This vinyl reissue - the first since the original album release - emphatically proves the timeless nature of the music. Relatively few copies are available so don't hang around if you want to snag one.

Review: Glenn Underground's 1996 debut album, Atmosfear, has recently become a sought-after item amongst a new generation of deep house DJs. Happily, Peacefrog has responded to this growing demand and delivered this track-for-track reissue. Listening back, it's impressive how well the material has aged. "Entercourse of the New Age" - a near perfect combination of warm Chicago deep house, new age melodies and dream house sounds - sounds particularly current, while "Rising Son" and the impeccable "Midnight Groove" have lost none of their Chicago-meets-New Jersey edge. The jazzy and wonderfully melodious "Israelee Night Falls", undoubtedly one of GU's most spine-tingling moments, is almost worth the admission price on its own.

Review: Collectors take note: Peacefrog has decided to reissue Theo Parrish's timeless - and much in-demand - debut album, First Floor. Like the original 1998 release, the album is spread over two separately sold double-packs. This first volume contains some of Parrish's strongest work, including the evocative, stretched-out shuffle of "First Floor Metaphor" (all undulating synth bass, dusty deep house beats and sublime string samples), the Luther Vandross-sampling brilliance of "Only The Beginning", the fuzzy hip-hop/beatdown fusion of "Sweet Sticky", and the deep jazz-house brilliance of "Love Is War For Miles". In other words, it's all killer, no filler, but you probably knew that already.

Review: Theo Parrish's long out-of-print debut album, First Floor, has become something of a must-have for collectors. Originally released in two parts way back in 1998 by legendary UK label Peacefrog, it contains some of the Detroit-based producer's finest work. This second installment is packed with highlights, including the loose, loopy deep house funk of "Electric Alleycat", the ultra-deep, Nina Simone sampling haziness of "Sky Walking", and the superb, Moodymann-does-Chicago Acid shuffle of "Heal Yourself & More". It also contains the thrilling "JB's Edit", a dusty, loopy cut-up of an old James Brown tune with tried-and-tested party-starting credentials.
