Band Aid - "Do They Know It's Christmas?" (live)
Review: This CD compilation brings together four decades of this iconic charity anthem, showcasing its evolution across generations while maintaining its heartfelt purpose. Featuring the original 1984 version by Band Aid, this release captures the raw urgency of the collective's mission to combat famine in Ethiopia. The 2004 rendition by Band Aid 20 introduces a modernised arrangement with a fresh lineup of artists, while Band Aid 30's 2014 version incorporates contemporary production and voices, reflecting the ongoing relevance of the cause. The 2024 version offers a reimagined take, balancing the classic's spirit with current musical sensibilities, ensuring it resonates with a new audience. Closing the collection is a powerful live performance from Wembley Stadium in 1985, a moment steeped in history and emotion that amplifies the song's legacy. Spanning generations of talent and commitment, this release is a celebration of unity and a reminder of the enduring power of music to inspire change.

Careless Whisper (live At Madison Square Garden, July 2008)
Careless Whisper (instrumental)
Review: George Michael's Careless Whisper 40th Anniversary Edition on CD is a nostalgic treasure for fans of one of pop's quintessential anthems. Released in 1984, the track's lush saxophone riff and Michael's emotive vocals made it an instant classic, topping charts worldwide and becoming a (slow) dancefloor staple. This commemorative CD presents four versions of the iconic song: the newly remastered original, an extended mix that amplifies its steamy appeal, a previously unreleased live performance from Madison Square Garden capturing its live charm and an instrumental version that highlights its exquisite musicality. While Michael himself was critical of the track's lyrical simplicity, viewing it as a minor achievement compared to his other work, the song's enduring appeal remains undeniable. This edition celebrates its lasting impact with a collection that offers fans both a trip down memory lane and a deeper appreciation of its musical legacy.

Last Christmas (instrumental)
Review: The 40th Anniversary Edition of Wham!'s iconic Christmas hit is a nostalgic trip through the beloved holiday classic. The first track, the original version remains as timeless as ever with its catchy melody and emotional lyrics, capturing the spirit of both love and heartbreak. The 'Pudding Mix' adds a playful, slightly altered twist, giving a fresh take on the classic while maintaining its festive charm. The live version recorded at Wembley Arena in 2006 showcases the energy and warmth of Wham!'s performance, adding an exciting, crowd-fueled vibe. Finally, the instrumental version strips down the vocals, letting the lush production and catchy synths shine in a new light. A Christmas classic!

Review: Gracie Abrams's The Secret of Us gets served up as a special edition here and it marks her most expansive album yet. This ambitious project shows her growth as both a songwriter and vocalist and adds in already assured fan favourites like 'That's So True' and 'I Love You, I'm Sorry (Live From Vevo).' The record finds Abrams collaborating once again with Aaron Dessner and she also worked with her best friend Audrey Hobert on several tracks. Together they reflect the urgency of recounting a meaningful night to a close friend with live experiences over the past year shaping its narrative and sound. A nuanced pop album with plenty to explore.

Tracks like 'Wave (feat Central Cee)' seamlessly merge Afrobeats with trap influences, while 'Active (feat Travis Scott)' introduces amapiano textures into Asake's distinct soundscape. These collaborations amplify the album's dynamic energy, while Asake's lyrics delve into themes of resilience and ambition. Ten Crowns (CD 2: Dave Audé continuous DJ mix)
Review: While he's released countless albums as one half of Erasure, Andy Bell solo excursions are something of a rarity - at least under his given name. Setting aside his conceptual 'Torsten' albums, Ten Crowns is his first solo album since 2010. Produced by Dave Auden (who also provides a seamless, DJ mix style version of the set on disc two), it largely delivers a more muscular, EDM-influenced take on the sparkling and energy-packed synth-pop sound he's famed for making with Erasure. There are naturally deviations from the script - see the indie-rock-framed singalong alongside Debbie Harry, 'Heart's A Liar' - but for the most part the highlights are rooted in Bell's love of dance-pop/synth-pop fusion (see 'Don't Cha Know' and 'Breaking Through The Interstellar').

Review: Two decades have now passed since the release of Back To Bedlam, James Blunt's debut album. Initially a flop, the set rocketed up the charts following the success of single 'You're Beautiful' - still the former soldier's most recognised song - and went on to become one of the biggest-selling albums of the noughties. Blunt has naturally decided to celebrate the album's 20th birthday, with this expanded anniversary edition providing a wonderfully remastered edition of the original set (CD1) and a bonus disc of previously unheard material. This disc includes lots of demos, alongside early performance recordings and - most excitingly for fans - a handful of unreleased songs recorded during the period. The definitive edition of one of the most popular albums of the century so far.

Review: Short n' sweet is perhaps the prevalent ideal of pop music today. Sabrina Carpenter's nectarous new record is a delightfully brief pick-me-up, one that nails the style. Described as a "pocket-sized popstar with a larger-than-life artistic presence" by Polydor, Carpenter's depiction as an idol of convenience and portability feels apt for today's always-on, attention-frazzling zeitgeist. Quick songwriterly syrups brightened-to-perfection productions help Carpenter trade in themes of youthful exuberance and glib spirit, as echoes of country music efflux through trap and ratchet pop; a quick rinse-off in an infinity pool of post-Taylor-Swift gloss. Titles like 'Sharpest Tool', 'Espresso', '15 Minutes' and 'Bed Chem' all seem to affirm the record's effective immediacy: and Carpenter owns the stimulant shot, as she taunts a romantic rival: "you'll just have to taste me me when he's kissing you..."

Review: Sabrina Carpenter has very quickly become a new school pop sensation. She has the look, the sound, the songs, and was also given a huge boost by being the support act on the recent and epic Taylor Swift tour. Short n’ Sweet is her new albumi and one that captures the vibrant energy of Carpenter with plenty of sugary hooks, catchy grovers and dazzling produciton flourishes. With a gold album and multiple platinum singles to her name, it’s no surprise that 'Espresso,' the lead single from her upcoming album, has it all—witty lyrics that make you smile and songwriting so clever you’ll wish you’d written it yourself. The rest of the tracks are not far different.

Review: Charli XCX's Brat And It's The Same But There's Three More Songs So It's Not is the deluxe edition of her genre-defying album Brat. Here her avant-pop brilliance and ability to blur the lines between underground innovation and mainstream appeal is on full display and the deluxe edition arrives just as Charli celebrates her first UK #1 single, 'Guess,' featured on this release. Charli XCX has consistently pushed the boundaries of pop, fusing experimental electronic elements with infectious hooks, and this deluxe edition is no exception. Each track brims with the creative energy and rebellious spirit that have become her trademarks. From its bold production to its daring lyrics, this album offers fans an even richer experience of Charli's trailblazing sound, ensuring her influence on pop culture continues to grow.

Review: After a longwinded brat summer, this re-iteration of Charli XCX's sixth album features 16 reimaginings of the smash success tracks from 'brat' from a star-studded list of appearances - namely Robyn, Yung Lean, Dua Lipa, Lorde and the first-ever feature from Billie Eilish. The club-influenced album became a smash success, catapulting her to become a top 100 artist overnight following a viral marketing campaign - whether you know it or not, the puke green and blurry font has definitely crossed paths with you. Whilst we have already had some great moments, with Lorde's verse on 'girl so confusing' responding to the original song, with Charli venting about a woman that she was incessantly compared to that she was jealous of and therefore couldn't be certain of the foundations of their friendship. The song of course broke the internet just like Charli foretold in the lyrics "One day we might make some music, the internet would go crazy". Many fans will just be excited to hear more in general, hardcore fans are eagerly awaiting the '365' remix by rising legend EASYFUN (aka Finn Keane), PC Music alumni, 1/2 of Thy Slaughter and producer for the likes of Bree Runway and Charli herself of course. The long-awaited remix album promises to close this era with a bang.

Review: The ingredients of Charli XCX's latest album, Brat, are clear, but intriguing: dance-pop songs arranged and sequenced to make it sound like a "club record" (a nod to her roots performing at London raves as a teenager), with lyrics and vocals that are in turn "aggressive" and "vulnerable". This approach - dance-pop with genuinely soundsystem-friendly weight - pays dividends. For proof, check recent singles '360', where Charli XCX's attitude-laden vocals rise above punchy beats, deep bass and eight-bit synth sounds; the deliciously up-tempo, grandiose and brilliantly bonkers 'Club Classics' (mutant garage meets everything-but-the-kitchen-sink peak-time madness); and growling EDM-pop of 'Von Dutch'.

Review: As the playful title suggests, Transmission Impossible brings together a trio of Coldplay concert recordings which were originally captured for radio broadcast. CD1 takes us back to 2007 and a set from Buenos Aries heavy on early classics ('Yellow', 'Clocks', 'God Put a Smile On My Face', 'Fix You' etc.), while CD2 finds the Winchester band at UEA in Norwich in 2011, performing said classics alongside more tracks that turned them into global indie-pop superstars ('Mylo Xyloto', 'Viva La Vida'). Disc three, the most recent performance of the lot, dates from 2016 and includes, amongst its numerous highlights, soaring, stadium-sized takes on 'Paradise', 'Hymn for the Weekend' and Leonard Cohen classic 'Suzanne'.

Review: Coldplay's Moon Music is a typically lush and atmospheric pop-rock journey that makes another step in the band's continued evolution. Blending their famous anthemic sound with some more celestial and experimental elements, the album feels both expansive and intimate. Songs like 'Light Through the Veil' and 'Celestial Echoes' offer reflective ambient tones, while tracks like 'Lunar Phases' carry uplifting cosmic energy. The band's seamless incorporation of electronic elements and orchestral flourishes gives Moon Music a dreamlike quality with Chris Martin's vocals guiding listeners through themes of love, unity and transcendence. This album is a refreshing work for those who are into such sounds and it confirms Coldplay are still pushing creative boundaries.

Review: There's a certain drama in the air when the beats kick in with an instant jolt of energy that doesn't let up. The tracks on the second album on Pete Burns-fronted crew are an exuberant mix of bold melodies and infectious rhythms, blending sharp pop with a cheeky edge. You'll know their massive SAW-produced SMASH 'You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)', but the group's unmistakable sense of theatre shines through, with each track feeling like a mini anthem. Whether it's the larger-than-life production or the slightly over-the-top flair, the sound remains unapologetically fun. It's pop at its most playful, wrapped in an unmistakable 80s glow that still carries weight today.

Review: Contemporary pop starlet Billie Eilish's third studio album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT is her most daring work yet. It's a diverse yet cohesive collection of songs that work well as a listening whole from front to back, and they all live up to the album name as they deliver both hard and soft hits lyrically and sonically while bending genres and defying trends at the same time. With the help of her brother and collaborator, FINNEAS, they wrote, recorded, and produced the album in their Los Angeles hometown. Following her hugely successful first two albums WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? and Happier Than Ever, this is another great expansion of Billie Eilish's artistic universe.

Review: Adedemola is the new self-titled album from Fireboy DML and one that marks a new chapter in his artistic journey. It continues to be shaped by years of self-discovery and more than just music, the record reflects his experiences of love, loss and self-realisation. The album was born from navigating life's struggles including the heartbreak of losing close friends which ultimately guided him to clarity and purpose. Adedemola dives into love in all its forms here from self-love to family love and romance and in doing so urges us to embrace what truly matters. There is great honesty throughout this album as Fireboy DML calls for unity and positivity across a compelling suite of sunny pop tunes.

Review: FKA twigs delivers Eusexua, her latest and hotly anticipated new album, and the latest to follow 2022's Caprisongs. A strong and determined directional shift away from Caprisongs' cutesy sensibility (we see it as no surprise that her last album was released under Atlantis, while Eusexua comes via home slices on her home turf, Young), Eusexua hears the artist formerly known as twigs take up a futuristic grey, suited, officiated and incorporated style, informed by a roundabout notion of "eusexua", her own coinage: "a feeling of momentary transcendence often evoked by art, music, sex, and unity." Themes of disconnected embodiment run rampant throughout the album, showing no signs of ambivalence where others might flinch in the face of greyness or techno-uniformity. Twigs' vision reclaims abundant but still currently dubious themes of hard work, grist and prosthesis, and as ever resounds in palates of glistening, glossy mecha-r&b, inheriting Bjorkish chameleonics and contrasting said spikiness with no less impassioned tales of her enjoying the underground techno scene in Prague, among other sources of inspiration.

Review: By K-pop standards, rapper-turned-popstar G Dragon (Real Name Kwon Ji Yong) is something of a veteran. He's been a star in his native South Korea since the tail end of the 2010s, enjoying success for a trio of albums released between 2009 and 2013. Ubermensch, officially his fourth full-length, sees him return to solo action following a period spent working as a songwriter and producer for other artists. It's a typically entertaining, fun and boisterous set that sees him sing (and more occasionally rap) atop tracks that variously mix and match elements of P-funk, EDM, disco, synth-funk and 21st century pop. K-pop fans take note!

Review: Quebec City-based singer/songwriter Margaux Suave and collaborator/producer Louis-Etienne Santais earned plenty of praise for their first album as Ghostly Kisses, 2022's Heaven, Wait. It framed the project as a new iteration of dream-pop, with the pair drawing inspiration from melancholic synth-pop, downtempo, hazy indie-pop and lo-fi soul. Sophomore set Darkroom continues in this vein while subtly expanding the pair's sonic horizons. Throughout, they shuffle attractively between string-laden trip-hop ('There Is No More Space'), dreamy two-step pop ('Golden Eyes'), slow-motion, Balearic-tinged synth-pop ('Lonesome Hero'), twinkling deep house-pop ('Calm Down') and orchestrated ambient pop ('Silver Screen').

Review: This collection plunges into Godley & Creme's eccentric post-10cc years, a whirlwind of boundary-pushing pop and inventive production. Tracks like 'An Englishman in New York' burst with surreal humour and layered arrangements, showcasing their knack for storytelling through off-kilter melodies. Meanwhile, 'Snack Attack' plays with genre, blending funk-laden grooves and absurdist charm. These songs aren't just quirky diversions-they're windows into the duo's fearless approach to dismantling pop conventions. Packed with vocal harmonies, synth experiments, and a sprinkle of the absurd, this box set is a reminder of how Godley & Creme rewrote the rules for art-pop.

Review: Heaven 17's Penthouse and Pavement deluxe double CD album commemorates the iconic debut of Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh after leaving Sheffield's Human League. Joined by Glenn Gregory, they formed Heaven 17, drawing their name from a list of bands favoured by the anti-hero of Anthony Burgess's 'A Clockwork Orange'. Their debut single, '(We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang,' stirred controversy and earned a BBC Radio 1 ban in March 1981. Released in September 1981, the Penthouse and Pavement album quickly achieved gold status and featured hits like 'Play to Win,' 'Penthouse and Pavement', and 'The Height Of The Fighting.' Disc One contains the original album, while Disc Two offers six non-album A and B sides, five original demos, and four 12" versions. Packaged in a new 7" deluxe gatefold with an eight-page booklet, this set includes album lyrics and credits, making it a very eye appealing package.

Review: Many critics have dubbed Lady Gaga's Mayhem, the superstar's latest full-length excursion, as a return to her pop roots - not to mention her strongest and most coherent set since breakthrough album Fame. Recorded at Rick Rubin's studio with the help of a crack team of producers, the assembled songs variously draw on synth-pop, EDM style pop-house, gritty industrial funk, the gnarled strut of electroclash and, perhaps more surprisingly, guitar-driven alt-rock. Naturally, Gaga is in fine form throughout, sassily and confidently delivering lyrics that muse on "love, chaos, fame and desire". This Japanese CD edition comes bundled with an art card, stickers and an expansive booklet.

Review: Thai rapper and singer Lisa drops her debut studio solo album Lisa, marking her first RCA Records release after her split from South Korean entertainment group YG Entertainment. With breakout rockstar energies and edgy hyperpop production, Atler Ego is a culminant musing on what it means to be a popstar or rockstar in 2025: like Taylor Swift, Lisa explores many different eras, with the album moving in five phases, each one representing a unique personality: in turn, Lisa appears in front of: a monolithic black rock structure, an outer-space catwalk, an enchanted garden, a green laser-beam motorcycle track and a volcanic red runway.

Hannah Reid's hauntingly beautiful vocals, paired with the band's atmospheric instrumentals, create an emotional and immersive vibe as the album explores themes of love, loss, and resilience. Standout tracks include the likes 'The Greatest Love' and 'Heavenly' which bring lyrical depth and musical sophistication. Review: Los Angeles-based alt-synthpop duo Magdalena Bay are by far the best in their lane right now - something they already established with their highly popular debut album Mercurial World back in 2021, with 'Chaeri' and 'You Lose!' striking a serious chord with fans of Charli XCX, Grimes and similar alt/electro-pop darlings. Paired with striking so-bad-it's-good visuals rife with overt effects and editing, it's really the combination of Mica Tenenbaum's distinctive, ethereal vocal performance and Matthew Lewin's textural and multilayered production you will stay for.
Imaginal Disc, sharing its name with structures in insect larvae that develop into adult forms later on in life, is a tale of discovering the essence of humanity after the protagonist's body rejects a CD that aliens attempted to implant in them. The album sees Lewin firing on all cylinders, the duo honing so closely on their specific sound that it's incomparable to anything else. Lead single 'Image' is a marvel, danceable in all the right places, moody and chord-striking when it needs to be. Magdalena Bay are cementing themselves as a must-know name in the 2020s.

Review: Melanie Martinez's debut album, Cry Baby, offers an interesting glimpse into her whimsical yet darkly introspective world. With tracks like 'Dollhouse' and 'Sippy Cup,' Martinez unveils the hidden truths of society and personal struggles, her coined term "carnival pop," capturing the eerie yet delicious atmosphere of the album, reminiscent of a Tim Burton film. Songs like 'Soap' and 'Alphabet Boy' deliver blunt commentary on societal norms and personal empowerment. Martinez's candid lyrics resonate deeply, whether addressing unrequited love in 'Pacify Her' or embracing individuality in 'Mad Hatter.' Cry Baby is a surreal carnival ride through self-discovery and emotional exploration that has listeners embrace their vulnerabilities and reclaim their narratives. A unique pop album that still surprises, some nine years after its initial release.

Review: As those following the music press (or what's left of it) will be aware, Megan Thee Stallion has been through a lot in recent years, with the Houston rapper's ascent to global superstardom being accompanied by struggles with grief and betrayal. It's perhaps not surprising, then, that her fourth album, MEGAN, is particularly spiky - both lyrically and musically - with the Texan responding to personal set backs by lashing out at online culture, perceived rivals, former collaborators (yes, Charli XCX does not escape criticism), and "sad girl shit". It not only confirms her place as a top-tier rapper - her lyrics are frequently b breathtakingly brilliant and jaw-dropping in their no-holds-barred intensity - but also one happy to do her thing over decidedly weighty beats, sub-heavy basslines and surprisingly minimalistic arrangements. A triumph, as expected.

Review: Italian pop queen Mina proves her enduring brilliance with her 76th - yes, 76th - studio album. Now 84, Mina remains a commanding force in European pop, her octave-spanning voice undimmed by time. The album has been produced by her son Massimiliano Pani and centres on love's complexities, weaving lush textures and timeless arrangements. Tracks like 'Non smetto di aspettarti' showcase her dramatic flair, while 'Senza farmi male' introduces a modern twist with electronic rock. Mina's voice, at times powerful and at others tinged with age, captures the passage of time, reminding listeners of her unmatched legacy.

Review: Kylie Minogue's turn-of-the-2K electropop album mightn't be known to most music fans; they know it by its singles, the best-known of which include 'Spinning Around' and 'On A Night Like This'. Also a return to Kylie's pop roots, it follows her 1997 record Impossible Princess, on which Minogue had taken an experimental turn towards trip-hop and electronica, though this didn't pan out as well as it did for committed actors in the style on which Minogue drew inspiration, such as Bjork. Though the former record gained a cult status in hindsight - a "sexy and reliable secret weapon" by some critics' assessments - Minogue nonetheless rode the critical wave of the time, saying Light Years heard her do "what I do best... pop music is the kind of music that people want from me." It is not to be discounted either, its electric dance sound design serving a kind of eerie hyperreality that likely wasn't registered among her target demographic way back when.

Review: On her 2023 album Tension, Queen of Pop Kyle Minogue leant into dance music culture in a big way, delivering a set of bold, weighty and throbbing dance-pop singalongs rooted in EDM, Euro-dance and the more boisterous and forthright end of LGBTQ club culture (a theme that has been a significant part of her musical output from the earliest days of her career in the 1980s). As a sequel, Tension II is similarly framed - think catchy, effects-laden vocals, trance-adjacent synth stabs, bustling beats and plenty of nods to club sounds old and new. There are a few collaborations, too, most notably with The Blessed Madonna ('The Edge of Saturday Night'), Sia ('Dance Again'), and Orville Peck and Diplo ('Midnight Ride').

Review: Kylie Minogue returns to her electropop roots with her latest album, Tension. Following her detours into country with 2018's Golden and disco with 2020's Disco, Kylie delivers an album brimming with energetic beats and catchy melodies. The standout single, 'Padam Padam,' has been a viral hit, securing her a spot in the UK Top 10 for the first time in a decade. Tension features 11 tracks, each infused with Kylie's signature blend of playful and sultry vibes. The title track is a vibrant mix of 90s house riffs and vocoder effects, while 'Vegas High' and 'Hold On to Now' shows her ability to turn introspection into dancefloor anthems. Despite slight diversions into funk and disco with tracks like 'Both Hands' and 'Green Light,' the album maintains its exhilarating pace. Closing with the introspective yet uplifting 'Story,' Kylie reassures her fans with a glittering chorus and heartfelt lyrics. Tension is quintessential Kylie, offering an escape filled with shimmering choruses and emotionally rich melodies, proving her enduring charm and relevance in the pop landscape.

Featuring collaborations with beloved friends like John Travolta and Michael McDonald, this album brings a fresh take on timeless songs such as 'White Christmas' and 'All Through the Night'. Review: Pet Shop Boys' 15th album, nonetheless, produced by James Ford, brilliantly blends widescreen pop with dance influences. Written during lockdown, it shifts away from pure bangers to a more reflective tone, reminiscent of their earlier work like Behaviour and Elysium. The nostalgic feel begins with the artwork and continues throughout the tracks. 'Loneliness' starts the album, growing in appeal with each listen. 'Feel,' a heartfelt romantic track, and 'Why Am I Dancing,' originally for their forthcoming musical, showcase Neil Tennant's expressive vocals and Chris Lowe's signature production touches. 'New London Boy' reflects on past experiences with both sadness and joy, featuring Tennant's return to rapping. 'Dancing Star,' about Rudolph Nureyev's defection, fits better within the album's context than as a single. An orchestral presence adds elegance to the production. The hi-energy of the first half transitions to a more subdued second half, with standout tracks like 'A New Bohemia' and the quirky 'The Schlager Hit Parade.' 'The Secret of Happiness' is a stunning, 60s-tinged epic, reminiscent of a James Bond theme. The album concludes with 'Bullet for Narcissus' and 'Love Is The Law,' maintaining the duo's unique flair. nonetheless no doubt reaffirms Pet Shop Boys' place in pop, oozing class and confidence.

Review: Porter Robinson's Smile! is a lively exploration of maximalist pop, filled with energetic beats and catchy melodies. The album opens with the high-energy duo 'Knock Yourself Out XD' and 'Cheerleader,' both are uplifting synths and powerful choruses that are sure to light up live performances. While Smile! dives into themes of fame with a playful, tongue-in-cheek approach, it's clear that Robinson is having fun with this new direction.Tracks like 'Kitsune Maison Freestyle' stand out with their irresistible, bouncy rhythms, and 'Mona Lisa' delivers a breezy, laid-back vibe. 'Russian Roulette' shines with a stunning chorus that lingers long after the song ends. While the album's irony might feel a bit heavy-handed at times, there's an undeniable charm in the way Robinson blends humor with heartfelt moments. There are quieter tracks that offer a nice contrast as well. Smile! is an exciting departure from Robinson's previous work and it's an entertaining ride that's worth a listen for its infectious energy and spirit.

Review: Rebecca Taylor arrives at third album A Complicated Woman in a very different place to where she was before the release of her previous full-length, the Mercury Prize-nominated Prioritise Pleasure. Now a bona-fide pop star, the South Yorkshire chanteuse now has to deal with heightened expectations and her own experience of fame. By the sound of A Complicated Woman, she's handling both with aplomb. That's not to say that the lyrics avoid difficult subjects - her own worries remain front and centre - but the delightfully grandiose production, extensive use of choirs and orchestras, and Taylor's own penchant for penning stadium-sized sing-alongs deliver a maximal pop gem fitting her genuine star status. Rotherham's finest has never sounded so good (or, it should be added, explicit - there are some genuinely adult themes on display).

Review: 3 years after SOPHIE Xeon's tragic, untimely death in Greece, her estate - managed by her brother - has finally fulfilled their promise of putting the finishing touches on, and releasing, "nearly finished" tracks from a vault of "hundreds of songs". In the family's official statement, they said "It feels only right to share with the world the music she hoped to release, in the belief that we can all connect with her in this, the form she loved most," and, so, to the shock of fans worldwide 'Reason Why' released on the 25th June in its final form after five years of leaked demos and live performance videos to go by. It's SOPHIE at some of her best, rich textural and multilayered production backing one of the popstars of a generation - where it usually tended to be Charli XCX, whom SOPHIE created the 'Vroom Vroom' EP with, here Kim Petras takes the mic, another of SOPHIE's close circle of collaborators.

Review: Taylor Swift's latest double album delivers an expansive collection of 35 tracks, showcasing her signature storytelling and emotional depth while exploring fresh sonic territory. Featuring collaborations with Post Malone and Florence & The Machine, the album blends introspective ballads with vibrant anthems that highlight Swift's versatility. The record sets a reflective tone, delving into themes of loss, anger and resilience. Tracks like 'So Long London' provide a poignant narrative closure, paralleling earlier songs from her discography while embracing the bittersweetness of moving forward. 'I Can Do It With A Broken Heart' captures the juxtaposition of public strength and private vulnerability with upbeat production reminiscent of Midnights. Collaborations shine throughout; 'Fortnight' finds Swift and Post Malone harmonising beautifully over a wistful melody, while the lively 'Florida!!!' bursts with summer energy, enhanced by Florence Welch's dynamic vocals. The stripped-down 'I Look In People's Windows' emerges as a standout, pairing raw lyricism with delicate guitar work to convey profound grief and longing. The project is a testament to Swift's ability to blend personal reflection with universal themes. With its balance of experimentation and emotional candor, it marks a bold chapter in her ever-evolving career.

Review: The Thompson Twins' iconic 1984 album Into the Gap is getting a fresh, deluxe reissue from BMG this fall. Remastered by Frank Arkwright, this special triple-disc collection includes the original album, which features hits like 'Hold Me Now', 'Doctor! Doctor!' and 'You Take Me Up', plus 30 additional tracks. These extras include B-sides, single edits debuting on CD and unreleased remixes by Pete Hammond of PWL fame. Into the Gap marked a pivotal moment for the Thompson Twins, as they transitioned to a trio after reducing their lineup. Working with producer Alex Sadkin at Compass Point Studios in The Bahamas, the band embraced synthesisers and electronic instruments, moving away from traditional rock sounds. This bold, experimental approach resulted in a new sonic identity. The reissue's accompanying booklet includes rare photos and insights from the band members themselves: Tom Bailey, Alannah Currie, and Joe Leeway. Overall, a terrific edition to honour the 40th anniversary of the album.

Review: Since appearing on Gorillaz fifth album, Humanz, in 2017, Kali Uchis has been on an upward trajectory. Now a major international star with a quartet of major label backed solo albums to her name, the Colombian American rapper and singer arrives at album number five, Sincerely, at the peak of her powers. Inspired in part by an unexplained "life-altering event", the set's lyrics explore "the complexities of life" and her desire to "find joy in life despite of the world". In truth, it's more joy than pain, with Uchis gravitating towards head-nodding, string-laden grooves, r&b-influenced pop, guitar-laden trip-hop torch songs, and immersive, dream-like soundscapes.

Review: NOW 12? 80s: 1983 - Part Two is a jam-packed for fans of extended mixes and 80s nostalgia. This 4CD set brings together 49 tracks, offering a mix of iconic hits and lesser-known gems, all in their extended or remixed forms. From Wham!'s energetic 'Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You Do?)' to the undeniable groove of New Order's 'Blue Monday', this compilation is filled with dancefloor-ready anthems. The set excels in its variety, mixing familiar chart-toppers like Spandau Ballet's 'Gold' and Lionel Richie's 'All Night Long' with deep cuts like Joe Jackson's atmospheric 'Steppin' Out' and Tracey Ullman's playful 'Breakaway'. Glamorous pop sits alongside punk-infused tunes, with bands like Public Image Limited and Echo & the Bunnymen adding a post-punk edge to the lineup. While the tracklist is dominated by pop and synth-heavy hits, the inclusion of disco classics like KC & The Sunshine Band's 'Give It Up' and Divine's 'Love Reaction' adds a touch of 80s dancefloor magic. This collection is a great snapshot of the era, featuring extended versions that give these songs even more room to shine. Affordable and well-curated, NOW 12? 80s: 1983 - Part Two is perfect for the fans of the deacde.

Review: While compilations of 1980s pop music are ten-a-penny, most tend to focus on the most celebrated hits and biggest singles. Spectrum's latest, Pop Gems: The 80s, takes a different approach, combining familiar numbers (Dexy's 'Celtic Soul Brothers', Roxy Music's 'Same Old Scene' and the Human League's 'Human') with forgotten treats and less-celebrated cuts from big names of the era (Tears For Fears, Ah-Ha, Shakin' Stevens, Adam Ant, ABC, Duran Duran, Boy George, Five Star, Bros etc). There's also a sprinkling of crossover American dancefloor hits too, from the likes of Chaka Khan, Womack & Womack, Sheila E, Cameo and Jakki Graham). It packs in plenty of three discs, as you'd expect, and even finds space for a dash of Fairground Convention!

Review: Given that the series debuted way back in the early 1980s, it would be safe to say that the release of a new NOW compilation is one of British music's longest-running traditions. The latest volume in the series, the 119th instalment in the brand's original iteration (we now have all manner of spin-offs, including the four-disc 'yearbooks' and ones showcasing extended mixes) does a good job showcasing what's been rocketing up the pop charts this year, taking in songs from the likes of Kylie Minogue, Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding, Pet Shop Boys (who have likely been on more NOW sets than any other act), Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, Chase & Status and Stormzy, Rudimental, Coldplay, Linkin Park and many other high-profile artists. A great Christmas gift for the ageless pop lover in your life.
