El Internet
Cat: REKIDS 262. Rel: 11 Apr 25
El Internet (6:41)
El Internet (instrumental) (6:36)
El Internet (acappella) (5:00)
Review: After spending the majority of his 20-plus-year career flitting between the Kompakt and Coneme labels, Matias Aguayo makes a rare outing on another label - a delayed debut for Matt 'Radio Slave' Edwards' REKIDS imprint. In its' original form (side A), 'El Internet' is a typically off-kilter affair in which his own poetic, spoken word vocals (in Chilean, of course) and fuzzy, elongated synth sounds ride a beefy but wonky bassline and the long-serving producer's usual South American-tinged, hand percussion-enhanced hybrid house/techno grooves. It comes accompanied by a vocal-free instrumental mix, where the full breadth and depth of Aguayo's production can be heard, and a useful acapella DJ tool.

Hous O Matik Hom O Patik (remixes)
Cat: REKIDS 087. Rel: 17 Mar 16
Hous-O-Matik (House Of Ties feat F Montefiori remix) (6:47)
Hous-O-Matik (Spencer Parker dub remix) (7:56)
Review: B.A.D.S. or Berlin Amateur Dramatics Society to give it its full name, is a collaboration be-tween Spencer Parker and Homopatik organiser and resident DJ Mr Ties. 'Hous-O-Matik Hom-O-Patik' was created especially for use at the infamous Berlin party, and now this remix package sees the pair share it with the rest of the world. The F Montefiori version squalling sax fused with doubled up drum patterns for a rough take on New York house. Spencer Par-ker's versions are more functional and streamlined, with the Work Them boss dropping tracky, tough house rhythms - in particular, the 'dub' version, with its relentless kicks and crashing cymbals, is nothing short of devastating.

Back Up Queen

Back Up Queen
Back Up Queen (Oliver $ remix)
Back Up Queen (808 Fake remix)
Review: For a relative newcomer, Nathan Barato has slotted right into the Rekids vibe with his first appearance on the label. "Back Up Queen" is defined by a brilliantly sarcastic vocal performance that sends up the diva culture that may or may not have its sights set on the dance music world. A rude bassline and solid tech-house bump do just the right amount of work in the background while a simple looped melody provides a contrast to the RuPaul-esque ramblings. Oliver$ does a serviceable job with his safe and steady remix, leaving it to 808 Fake to do away with the vocal and create a deeper mood driven by an insistent hat.

Showtime EP
Cat: REKIDS 235. Rel: 20 Feb 24
Klashjamz (4:44)
Showtime (4:32)
HighNRG (5:04)
Jazz Ting (4:57)
Review: Mark Broom is one of the mainstays of the global underground. The UK titan has a recognisable take on house and techno genre that is underpinned by slamming kick and that comes to bare once more now as he lands on fellow legend Radio Slave's Rekids label. These four cuts bring a more house feel to start with as 'Klashjamz' layers up disco strings and vocals into something joyous. 'Showtime' has a garage slip to the loopy, silky drum rotations and 'HighNRG' throws it back with big stabs, percussive drums and chopped up vocal shards. 'Jazz Ting' is an aptly named closer with plenty of steamy sax notes of raw, loopy grooves.

Likewise
Review: If you've not heard this yet, you've either not being paying attention properly or you don't go out enough. It's been hyped to the heavens for the best part of a year, became an underground Ibiza anthem last summer and has attracted all manner of interest (apparently serial house fancier P Diddy likes it). Now it drops as part of Radio Slave's Cabin Fever series on a particularly desirable pink splattered white 12". What makes "Likewise" so attractive is the unlikely but brilliant combination of a throbbing low end groove (all skippy beats, pulsating sub and relentless electronic chords) with a classic jazz vocal (what sounds like Nina Simone). It shouldn't work, but it does - and then some.

Funky Brewster (feat Harvard Bass) (4:08)
Funked Up (6:33)
Review: German house mainstay Oliver Dollar has many a classic and dusty jam under his belt and now he lands on Rekids to serve u some more. This part two of his Contemporary series kicks off with 'Pill Popper' (feat Brillstein) and it features his signature drum depths as well as a percussive Afro skip to keep things lively and sultry vocals up top. The acappella is also included before the B-side jam 'Funky Brewster' (feat Harvard Bass) brings more sleazy low ends and sweat-inducing beats. Last of all is the filter house workout 'Funked Up' with its skewed synths and snappy kick and clap combos. Effective tackle, no doubt.

Brainscan (6:28)
Condesa (6:11)
Review: Frankey & Sandrino are a mighty pair who know how to lay down compelling tech sounds. They unite once more here for a powerful two-tracker on the legendary Berlin-based Rekids label. First up is 'Brainscan' which is dark and moody, with futuristic synths and stark vocals over a rolling, tense bassline. On the flip is 'Condesa' which is a much more loose affair with broken beat drums and 80s synth lines. It has a post-rave 90s feel but updates for modern dance floors. Both tunes are likely to get plenty of plays this winter.

Pace (6:32)
Even Rome Wasn't Built In A Day (7:16)
Review: Tal Fussmann follows up on standout releases on Diynamic, Innervisions and Drumpoet Community with this bright and bold drop for Rekids. As far as premier league tech house runs go, that's pretty hard to top, and the tracks more than live up to the platforms. The monster stabs and bruising bass on 'Freedom Defines House', the snaking pressure and nagging rim shots driving 'The Royal' and dramatic Detroit string stabs on 'Pace' all point to big rooms and festival stages, with 'Even Rome Wasn't Built In A Day' capping the release off with a crescendo of machine soul that will no doubt herald more than a few climactic closing sets this summer.

Could Be Anybody
Could Be Anybody (Amir Alexander Deep Dive remix)
Review: The latest missive from Rekids comes with two fresh names on offer, and it sees the label continuing the run of good form it has had of late. Liviu Groza has popped up a couple of times with stripped-down offerings for City Fox among others, and "Could Be Anybody" continues that groovy minimal aesthetic. It's the jangling keys samples that make this track a winner though, warming the brittle bones of the rhythm. Amir Alexander turns out a rumbling remix that places the emphasis on low-end frequencies and spacious swathes of melody as a nice antidote the shuffle n' bump of the original.

Throb (9:23)
Thrunk (8:22)
Review: Danny Howells is one of the UK's natural electronic music treasures. He was there in the early days of prog and remains a singular artist who now debuts on another fine institution in Radio Slave's Rekids. His new EP that blends deep house warmth with subtle progressive flourishes and finds him teaming up with keyboardist Elliot Herrington. The title track shimmers with late-night fuzz, while 'Thrunk' builds around a rare-for-Howells bass-first approach that has already made it a favourite among selectors like Honey Dijon, DJ Sprinkles and Jennifer Loveless. All in all, another triumph for Howells.

Circulate (7:05)
Freedom (William Kiss remix) (5:50)
Twisting Shadows (7:36)
Review: Mathias Kaden's Circulate EP takes its time, but in the best possible way. Freedom opens with a lean, rhythmic pulse, all stripped-back beats and delicate stabs, before a gospel vocal drops in, adding a moment of unexpected brilliance. It's a track that operates with precisioniKaden makes every element count without overcrowding the sound. The low-end groove moves with a quiet confidence, refusing to show off yet impossible to ignore. Circulate, the title track, leans into a hypnotic, classy mood. Synth hits crackle through like electricity, giving the track an infectious tension without ever needing to go over the top. It's all about subtle control, making it the kind of track that commands attention without ever asking for it. William Kiss steps in on remix duties for Freedom, pushing it into full peak-time mode. There's an extra layer of percussion and a heavier swing that gives the track a new edge, transforming it into something bigger without losing the original's sharp focus. To close, Kaden's Twisting Shadows brings in an acidic bassline and warped vocals, shifting the energy into something more unpredictableiperfect for those moments where the night starts to take on a life of its own.

Shakedown (6:29)
Review: Mark Broom and CJ Baker debut their house alias Kingpin Cartel on Radio Slave's revered Rekids with this standout new EP. Kingpin Cartel are known for releases on Saved Records, Rewired and Beardman and embodies a well-designed, timeless house sound that brings real emotion. The four-tracker kicks off with the title track which is a funky, soulful sound with squelchy licks and vibrant keys. 'Moonrise' follows with smooth swinging piano riffs and punchy percussion then 'You Are' dives deep, combining emotive synth chords with a powerful house groove while 'Shakedown' closes the EP with quirky synths and an infectious old-school bassline.

Hot Mess (Mike Dunn Deep Messy remix) (6:23)
Hot Mess (Mike Dunn Deep Messy instrumental mix) (6:26)
Review: Radio Slave's Rekids remains right at the forefront after decades in the game. That is no doubt in part down to great recruitment of new talent who keep updating its signature sounds. This time out Hilit Kole makes a debut with 'Hot Mess,' a raw and jacking house cut with rugged drum loops and a sleazy vocal that turns into an epic wail. An Even Hotter mix brings more libidinous vocal overtones and then the one and only Mike Dunn remixes. Firstly he keeps it smooth and seductive, then pairs back the vocal to allow his lithe synths to shine. A nice varied package from all.

Nina Kraviz & Luke Hess - "Remember"
Black White
So Wrong
Sheer
Review: For this latest Mr Jones EP by Nina Kraviz, she withdraws any sentiments of ghetto house heard on last year's debut album and turns in something house and techno inspired for Rekids. Her sultry, accented vocals still play a large role in her music however, best heard in the dark house of "Desire", the first track of this double 12". "Mr Jones" begins much the same was as "Desire", but when the beat does drop, it's not as tough, but twice as haunting - complementing the EPs cover art. Kraviz teams up with Luke Hess for the Detroit techno drum track that is "Remember", while "Black White" offers the some respite from the previous productions gloominess with something more festive and tropical. From here Kraviz provides some classic, minimal, and percussive deep house in "So Wrong", which leads perfectly into the club drumming of "Sheer". A superb follow up by Kraviz.

Ghetto Kraviz Edits

Ghetto Kraviz (Amine Edge mix)
Ghetto Kraviz (Akid revamp)
Review: "Ghetto Kraviz" was the lead track on a well chosen triplet of productions that precluded the long over due debut album from Rekids pinup, the lazily sultry sounding Nina Kraviz. The sly nods to Dance Mania that permeated the tracks' stripped down refrain also demonstrated a accidental debt to current strains of juke when the track was flipped to 45rpm! No such tempo shifting madness is had on this edits 12", which features revisions from both Amine Edge and Alex Kidd. Intriguingly, Rekids did not originally commission either edit but were suitably impressed with the results to release them, with Rekids regular Alex Kidd impressing most with some haunting textural embellishments.

Ghetto Kraviz (3:50)
Jealousy (5:01)
Show Me Your Time (6:03)
Review: Russia's Nina Kraviz graces the record buying public with her first material in some time, with the three tracks on Ghetto Kraviz the prelude to a full album pencilled in for release on Rekids at some point next year. Nods to the seminal Dance Mania imprint abound as soon as your eyes clasp on the cover art, and this continues with the stripped down music held within, as Kraviz's languid drawl is looped up and dizzyingly placed amidst the minimalist; low slung bass and 808 flex on the title track. "Jealousy" is that bit smokier, with Kraviz herself sounding slightly intoxicated amidst the stripped down jack. (Intriguingly both sound quite fun when spun at 45 rpm). As the flipside "Show Me Your Time" operates at 45prm there's no footwork fun to be had there, though it's an equally potent combination of Kraviz's vocals laid atop each other amidst the sub heavy beat.

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Russian DJ/producer Nina Kraviz recorded 'Mr Jones' back in 2013 which receives a reissue on REKIDS here on clear double vinyl. A fine collection of sturdy DJ tools, it features the sensual deep house cut 'Desire' featuring her own vocals, the sonar transmissions of 'Remember' which ventures into techno territory in collaboration with Detroit dub techno engineer Luke Hess, as well as the dreamy hypnotic beats of 'Black White' and closing it out with the minimal basement jam 'Sheer'.
