Sense Of Departure EP
Cat: QUINTESSE 56. Rel: 04 Oct 17

Deep House
Intro (1:15)
No Dreams (6:32)
Stuttgart Sessions (feat Stylus Heat) (4:48)
Fanta Club (6:34)
Black Alley Shuffle (4:34)
Review: German imprint Quintessentials' mission statement is to keep underground house music on the map. It claims to hold a candle to those old house records: they love that raw yet soulful vibe. For their 56th (!) release they have tapped Mexican producer 4004, who has had releases also of late on FACES, Poetry In Motion and Late Night Jackin'. Smoky late night groove "No Dreams" gets things off to a good start with its smooth Rhodes, bumpy bassline and hypnotic bongo action. We particularly enjoyed the pumping NYC basement vibe of B side cut "Fanta Club" while "Black Alley Shuffle" gets back to the program in sexy and dusky fashion complete with some dusty rhythms, diva vocals and further mood lighting with the impressive use of filter sweeps.

Get Away EP

Deep House
Move
Wanna Get Away
Cruel
Baby Please
Review: Dutch deep house producer Alex Agore makes his debut on the Quintessentials imprint with four chunky cuts of NY-inspired house. A-Side tracks "Move" and "Get Away" both bristle with sultry energy; the former's robust kick drum-sweaty vocal combo could easily be a lost Kerri Chandler production, while the latter locks into a deepish groove with a gently throbbing bassline, expertly chopped vocal moans and languid keys. On the flip, "Cruel" and "Baby Please" tread a similar path; the jazzy piano and fully revealed vocal on "Cruel" has the kind of effortless groove that many a house producer spend careers trying to nail, while the closing cut is a mutant after hours sleaze jam of the highest order. Well worth checking.

Review: Andy Ash is one of the UK's most low-key house producers. He has released on an array of smaller boutique house labels and always brings some broad influences as well as great knowledge of the classics. Now he pops up rather out of the blue on Quintessentials with a superb album of stylish as well as useful house. There are steamy Windy City vocal cuts like the opener, jacked-up workouts like 'Life' raw yet somehow soulful groovers like 'I'm Here' featuring a well-placed sample that older heads with recognise and beautifully deep, balmy and heads-down numbers like 'Another.' A real house album for real house heads.

I'm Here (feat Amber Kuti - Alton Miller remix) (7:05)
The Sound (feat Erik Rico - Black Fan remix) (6:03)
The Sound (feat Erik Rico - Dan Piu remix) (6:36)
Review: As the title suggests, this EP acts as a kind of aperitif for Andy Ash's forthcoming album, All The Colours. Unusually, we don't get to hear Ash's original tracks, but rather a trio of remixes. Alton Miller steps up first to give his take on boogie and proto-house influenced number 'I'm Here', where Amber Kuti's delay-laden vocals rise above a deliciously warm, rubbery electronic backing track that adds deep space chords and colourful synth sounds to a rolling deep house groove. Over on side B, we get two takes on Erik Rico hook-up 'The Sound': a pleasingly jacking, early Chicago house-inspired revision from Black Fan rich in jacking drums and bleeping lead lines, and a wonderfully atmospheric, mind-soothing interpretation from Dan Piu that channels the spirit of late '80s Larry Heard productions.

I Know - I Am (6:05)
Deep Rotation (7:48)
TE2 (Blackburn Warehouse mix) (5:55)
Review: No one knows who Black Fan is just yet so we shall go right to the music - this new EP on Quintessentials epitomises the label's vibe - raw, deep, fad-free house sounds for the heads. The artist has been releasing music for almost a decade on the likes of Local Talk and this label but really stands out with this one. 'I Know - I Am' is a chord-laced dancer with subtlety uplifting energy, and 'Deep Rotation' then pairs it back to lovely wooden drum sounds and clacking hits that are infused with gently warming chords. 'TE2' (Blackburn Warehouse mix) brings more spangled synth energy and a rawer drum sound that is perfect for flashing lights and sweaty dancefloors.

Poems For You
Review: Since last appearing on Quintessentials, Berlin dwelling Borrowed Identity has seen his profile ratchet up with releases on Fina, Mistress and Stripped And Chewed leading up to a commission to contribute to Ryan Elliott's Panorama Bar mix. The Sexo Bonito EP is a fine time for some further exercises in sassy deep house for Quintessentials. "Shake" bumps along impressively, doffing a hat to classic U.S house via diva vocal samples, chunky bottom-end and wavy chords. "Get Down" reaches for the organs, placing them at the centre of a hustling groover that benefits greatly from some rubbery synth bass and delay-laden vocal samples. Finally, "Poems For You" is warm and calming. It sounds like the sort of thing you'd expect to hear drifting from the speakers at some beachside bar in hotter climes.

This Is Harmony (Creative Swing Alliance remix) (6:44)

Review: Glamorous deep house for upmarket cocktail bars in the vein of labels like Dessous and HFN. Pescara's Mat Chiavaroli presents us with The Swan EP featuring "This Is Harmony" a dusty deep house jam with sampled diva vocals (from something you might all know!), swirling Rhodes keys and a killer bassline. The Creative Swing Alliance remix is even more rolling and funky and makes those pad sounds even more immersive and dreamy. On the flip is more dusty and sultry deepness in the form of the bittersweet and melancholic "Swan" and "Areg" respectively.

Don't Move
Review: Si Murray and Chris Barker aka Deep Space Orchestra have been making some serious waves since they first began producing together in 2005. Releasing on a set of reputable labels such as Delusions of Grandeur and Drumpoet Community over the following few years, they now hold a stellar rep for their raw and groove ridden deep house. This time round, the pair have been snapped up by Quintessentials and frankly, we can't think of a more suitable artist-label partnership. The Bucktown Fever EP kick starts with the smooth and sophisticated "Bucktown"; rich, pumping and analogue, its driving rhythm and vintage charm make the EP a winner before we've even flipped over. Once we do however, "Arrakis" holds its own with delicate strings, simple chord sequences and sensual vocal snippets, bound together by tight hi-hats and a deep round bass. Lastly, "Don't Move" and its intriguing field recordings and expertly executed percussion tips an already outstanding EP into a timeless, classy piece of wax that we highly recommend.

Review: Simon Hinter might not be a name known to many, but he is an artist who should be given his high quality output over the years. Here the man who counts labels like Phil Holland and DJs like Osunlade as fans serve sup more fo his brilliantly raw and expressive house jams. There are frayed edges and disco joy in the loops of 'Alright' that make way for a more deep and cuddly, warm and festive sound on 'Wanna Make Love.' It's the brilliant samples that bring these tunes to life and that proves the case on the KRL remix of 'Alright' as well as steamy and seductive closer 'Club Friday.'

Pushin On (4:45)

Trashcamp (4:23)
Review: German producer Simon Hinter has been quiet for the last year. But now, 12 months after his last outing, the quietly assured artist is backed with three more of his raw, funky, filtered and chunky house grooves. They come after years of superb sounds on the likes of Tenth Circle, Suspected and Phil Holland and have previously been supported by DJs like Osunlade. 'Pushin On' takes that well known vocal sample and reworks it into a toughened house beat, 'Together' cuts loose on more disco-fried sounds and samples and 'Trashcamp' rounds out with a dusty, stripped back and dubbed house tune for cosy basements.

Review: Germany's Quintessential is as reliable as ant label out there when it comes to fad-free, timeless deep house. Their's is a grown up sound that is never in a hurry to impress, instead slowly sucking you into a heady groove and keeping you there. Jank's entry to the label's discography opens with the heavy, trudging kicks of 'Has Gone' before 'Ballad' brings a more light and airy, jazz-tinged melodic vibe. It's lo-fi, intimate and awash with smart samples. 'Misty' closes down with a more cosmic outlook, long legged kicks and scuffed dup bass to die for.

Review: More works by Brian "Javonntte" Garrett offered up here by Quintessentials, following up his How Is Club246 EP for the imprint earlier this year. For the uninitiated, the Detroit native has worked with local legends such as Andres and Amp Fiddler, in addition to touring as a dancer for the legendary Aretha Franklin back in the day. The Private Party EP nails that classic Motor City house vibe - soulful, understated and deeply emotive. From the moody and hypnotic opener "20 Million Of The Planet", dusted down and smoothly executed mood lighting as heard on "Detroit 9" to the life-affirming moments of truth as heard on "In My Soul" that's just perfect for solitary dancing.

Giovanni Damico - "Kitkat" (5:02)
Kolja Gerstenberg - "Get Your Ass Up" (6:09)
Review: British deep house imprint Quintessentials is back after some great releases of late by Mexican producers 4004 and Soul Of Hex, Tuscany's Mat Chiavaroli and Russian Ponthy Mython. On the A side of this various artists compilation entitled Gentlemen Cuts, we have Andrea Pedra aka Kian-T from Tuscany with the deep and dusty soul-jazz of "Disco Sauvage". Nobody does deepness like the Swiss and indeed Replika's "Hallowgram" delivers the goods. On the flip we have some funky nu-jazz business by Salerno's Giovanni Damico (aka Ron Juan) in the form of "Kitkat" channelling classic Phil Asher/Restless Soul kind of vibes, while Leipzig's Kolja Gerstenberg (Suol/Smile For A While) delivers the EP's finest moment on the irresistable "Get Your Ass Up". It's a dusty and sexy jam reminiscent of early Agnes or Baaz. All killer no filler from this fine league of gentlemen!

Natural Instincts (Aleqs Notal remix) (6:41)
Warmonic Fusion (7:14)
Review: Life Recorder's latest outing refines his signature deep house palette, drawing from Detroit's warmth and Chicago's rhythmic grit. 'Natural Instincts' rolls with crisp drums and weighty low-end, its synth work weaving between jazz-inflected chords and hazy pads. 'Dreams' dials up the melodic sensibility, cascading arpeggios giving way to a hypnotic, late-night groove. On the flip, Aleqs Notal reconstructs 'Natural Instincts' with a percussive edge, layering swung hi-hats and metallic textures for a more kinetic drive. 'Warmonic Fusion' rounds out the set with rich harmonics and a subtly propulsive rhythm, merging introspection with club functionality. A refined, well-balanced release from the French producer.

Lukatron - "Aspect Ratio"
Radiq - "Luv N Pain"
Cottam - "Work It"
Deymare - "So Real"
Review: Quintessentials return to their infrequent Deep Raw & Real series of global house with a typically stellar line up. Musical Freak Luke Solomon revisits his Lukatron pseudonym for some simple, no nonsense jacking business on "Aspect Ratio", little more than multiple layers of percussion and toasty bass patterns from which a spectral machine funk melody steadily emanates. Philpot type Radiq follows with the crisp future funk of "Lovin Pain" which finds its feet as soon as those hi-hats lock into groove with the heavy synth flourishes. On the flip Cottam gives us a taste of what to expect on his forthcoming Aus release with the liquid bump of "Work It" which finds the space to work in a cheeky R&B sample to great effect. Rising Finnish producer Deymare switches down the mood on "So Real", a saunter through slick bottom heavy beatdownisms which only serves to highlight the different shades of house music that characterise this impressive release.

Rob Mello - "The Mel Skipson Project" (Rob Mello Motivation - No Ears mix)
Skipson - "The Mel Skipson Project" (Editspot part 1)
Review: Who said clearing samples was a nightmare? Skipson - being a the good chap he is - sent the final version of "K's Editspot pt.1", which used Rob Mello samples, to the man himself for his blessing. Rob - also being a good chap - liked the new version so much he offered up a remix! And so the Mel Skipson Project was born, and thanks to Quintessentials both versions are now available to the record buying public in nicely presented 10" format. Mello's tweak is pure sweat-drenched peak time fodder with killer vocals pressed up against an acidic Chi-town bassline - big tip. Skipson's version is not as incendiary, opting instead for sampled crowd noises, deep Motor City chords and a straight up house bump. Killer release!

Run The Blues (5:37)
Review: This year is the 30th anniversary of Motor City mainstay Alton Miller's first 12" single. Three decades on, the Detroit veteran continues to deliver impeccable slices of dancefloor deepness in his now trademark style. There's naturally much to admire on this Quintessentials outing. We get two takes on 'Find Some, Get Some': a hypnotic, subtly Afro-house inspired original mix that makes great use of some effortlessly soulful vocals, wobbly electronic motifs and deep bass, and a more stripped-back, percussive 'Dub' that sounds to our ears like a guaranteed late-night, heads-down treat. We'd also recommend bonus cut 'Run The Blues', a wonderfully jazzy, organic-sounding chunk of warming, synth-sporting deep house soul that's laden with fantastic lead vocals.

Just Saying (4:39)
Review: Some 31 years after he made his debut, Alton Miller continues to be a reliable source of high quality deep house. Here, the storied Detroiter returns to Quintessentials, an imprint he first appeared on two years ago, with another strong batch of emotive, deep and immersive club cuts. The real standout - for us, at least - is A-side 'Crush (Hitman on Set remix)', where Ron Trent style hand percussion hits, drowsy electric piano motifs, eyes-closed vocal snippets and the dreamiest of pads rise above unfussy deep house beats and a warm, evocative bassline. Elsewhere, Sololo features on sunset-ready deep house box jam 'Haibo', while 'Just Saying' is a jazzy, percussive and bass-heavy workout tailor-made for increasing energy levels out on the dancefloor.

Nicholas - "Holdin On"
Nicholas - "On The Streets"
Simoncino - "Unknown"
Simoncino - "All Night"
Review: Italian duo Nicholas & Simoncino continue their ascent from limited white label edits to further recognition with this split release for the Quintessentials imprint. If you've kept an ear near their recent endeavours, you'll be smart to the decidedly old school 90s vocal house flex that runs deep through the four tracks here. Nicholas takes the lead with two tracks on the A Side which commence with "Holdin On" - heavy on the resplendent piano vibes, with big ivory flourishes sweeping across the bumping rhythm before an almighty vocal comes swooping in with Queenish aplomb. "On The Streets" is just as accomplished, leaning on some annoyingly familiar source material and containing a killer gospel breakdown. In contrast to the NJ garage style of the A Side, Simoncino serves up a double helping of Muzic Box worthy warehouse jams, with proto drum machine rhythms, big melodic washes and heavy analogue bass movements pervading both "Unknown" and "All Night".

Keep On Groovin (6:29)

Come Get Me (5:39)
Easy Loving You (5:54)
Review: While Nicola Laporchio has received plenty of plaudits recently for his work as Cosmic Garden and NLXLB, he's released far more records of note - and over a longer period - as Nico Lahs. He recently delivered two terrific EPs under the alias on Omena, and here makes his debut on Quintessentials. He hits the ground running with the heads-down drive of 'Keep On Groovin', where a metronomic analogue bassline, bleeping melodies and layered percussion catch the ear, before breaking up the beats on the jazzy deep house warmth of 'Freakin'. Over on side B, 'Come Get Me' is an even deeper, classically dreamy affair with more than a few nods to the great Larry Heard, while 'Easy Loving You' is a languid, sample-rich shuffle that seems to make use of musical elements lifted from a groovy and organic dancefloor treat.

The shadowy British producer goes for sexy and slow-mo grooves on "After The Sun" (feat Franc Syx), before returning to disco on the sunny and uplifting "Mind". Kicking things off with the high-strung, vocal piner 'I Know You Can', whose jacking funk jerks blend dreamily with its sampled street soul voxxes, we then move into the less jerky but no less pistoling groove of 'Take Me Higher', which never fails to do so. 'House Family' grubs things out with a deeper melody line, rounding things off on a dubbier dream-session.

Review: Also known for his work as Al Hype or Black Suede, Atlanta's finest Stefan Ringer is back. Hot off an awesome remix for his homeboy Stranded on local imprint Homage, he's on-point with this new one for London's Quintessentials. Ringer delivers a real pearl here on The Difference EP: beginning with the lean and subtle groove dynamics of opening track "OTW", it's quite evident that Ringer's M.O. here is pure form mood music, and that is exemplified again, brilliantly, on the expressive deepness of "Shakyabody" up next. On the flip, it's all about the emotive and soulful wonder of "Evolution" reminiscent of previous appearances on Kai Alce's NDATL Muzik.

Massive Horns (interlude) (2:57)
Review: Few artists are quite as good as S3A at turning dusty, obscure samples into soulful deep house gold. Here, the French producer makes his first appearance on Quintessentials with four more sample-heavy dancefloor workouts. There's naturally plenty to get excited about, from the dirt-encrusted, disco-sampling deep house grooves of "Dick Jones Track" and warm, loved-up piano house vibes of "Feels Like Garage" (of the U.S variety, of course), to the brilliantly bombastic, hip-hop style quick-fix "Massive Horns (Interlude)". Arguably most impressive, though, is the hard-boiled, boogie-era disco-meets-21st century house bump of "Rush". It sounds like a guaranteed party-starting, peak-time smasher.

Review: Simoncino is like a direct link to the earliest roots of deep house. His sounds are coated in tones of tape hiss, dustiness from his analogue machines, and dreamy synth work that speaks of his Italia heritage. This newest EP is another class outing on Quintessentials that finds him leaning into dub. 'Dub Theory I' is mid-tempo but with nice drive, 'Dub Theory II' has more thunder in the claps and darkness in the bass. 'Dub Theory III' brings shards of melodic light that cut through the muggy atmospheres and 'Dub Theory IV' is a nice Maurizio-style techno roller for early evening or the dead of night.

"Dirty South" sees a tribal sentiment fighting its way into the amalgamation, whereas "Upper East" is a dub-lined appropriation of hip-hop. Review: Toby Tobias has been synonymous with the combined sound of deep-house and disco for the past six years, and his latest release on Quintessentials continues to cement his reputation for quality music. "One Night Onmare Street (Original)" has a thumping bass line and energetic science-fiction synthesisers firing out from deep space cannons. This track drives in all sense of the word, a fast paced house workout powering forward. The Weekend Express remix is our pick of the tweaks; his version of "One Night Onmare Street" holds onto the main chord progressions but rams the drive into high gear, forcing the beat to go faster with a raw, squelching acid line that only drops to let the soul-flecked synths shine through.

Review: If you like your deep house lovingly crafted and exquisitely musical, Quintessentials' Deep & Raw & Real rarely disappoints. This latest instalment features four more fabulous international cuts to contend with, each delivering a distinctly different take on deep house. Ricardo Miranda's "Rush Hour" is wonderfully sleepy, offering hissing cymbals and super-deep chords. NO Milk's "Bubble People" ups the atmosphere again thanks to some choice double bass loops and distant jazz piano, while Marcello Napoletano's "All My Things" brilliantly recalls early St Germain and Aqua Bassino.

There's much to enjoy throughout, from the sun-bright swing of Borrowed Identity's UK garage-meets-deep house workout "For You" and the wonderfully atmospheric, synth-heavy chug of Ooft!'s "Freak-E Groove", to the foreboding, jazz-funk-sampling hustle of S3A's "Searching" and lilting, late night jazz-house bliss of Loz Goddard's album highlight "Leaves". Other highlights include the drowsy chords and bumpin' beats of KRL's "Baltimore" and the low-slung, gospel-influenced deep house pump of 4004's "Continuous Dialogue".
