Red - "The Nuts" (original mix)
Homecut - "Time Difference" (feat J-Live - Marc Mac remix)
Kidkanevil - "Good Morning, What's New?" (feat Andreya Triana - Capstone re-version)
Review: Ten years deep, First Word showcase just how timeless their output has been by exploring their vaults and repurposing some of their finest classics 10" re-releases. Never press to vinyl before, each of these cuts surges at the very forefront of hip-hop, funk and world music. Each track is a highlight; "African Kings" is quintessential Afrofunk laced with warm keys and undeniable groove infection, "The Nuts" is futuristic homage to Danny Breaks, Marc Mac conjures the spirit of the Steve Miller Band on his Homecut remix and the Capstone remix of the Andreya Triana-fronted "Good Morning What's New?" is a drum-heavy jazz daydream you'll never want to awake from. Here's to another 10 years!

Cat: BCAT 0996WHITE. Rel: 16 Mar 15
Cheyenne's Comin' - "Come Back To Me" (3:01)
Hanson - "Take Me To Your Home" (3:10)
Review: Blackcat 80 copies only for the world white vinyl repress for the world . "Come Back To Me" takes us back to 1976 as Native American soul girl Cheyenne's rich, gut-driven delivery tops a seriously tight funk cake that's flavoured with blistering horns and crisp guitars. "Take Me To Your Home" takes us even further back to 1973. Taken from their debut album Now Hear This, it's a sparkling, jazz-tinted psychedelic slice that harbours some seriously warm keys. Guaranteed to remain broad and beautiful for a long, long time to come. Grab it while you can.

Free Association - "Free Sensation"
Hristo - "Heat Market"
Review: Edmonton crew Common Edit resurface with their first 7" treat in almost a year with Andrew Allsgood's Free Association and Honey Disco's Hristo sharing sides. As with all Common Edit releases it's a record of two halves with the Hristo production floor worthy whilst the Free Association track one for more horizontal situations. It's hard to describe "Free Sensation" as anything other than dreamy, with Allsgood revealing a dubby adventure into sumptuous dancefloor disco funk with some absolutely killer filtering. A decidedly more taut sensation runs through "Heat Market" from Hristo which is some uncredited, rigid disco funk perfect for the more cosmically minded selectors.

California One
Shelter
Review: H-Track re-release the third in their edit trilogy with this stunning collection of perfectly executed reversions. Calender's epoch-defining string hook and super-tight bass groove "Hypertension" gets a raw, foot-stomping extension, "California One" is a very subtle update of the Con Funk Shun classic while Faith Massive's "Shelter" gets a sparkling Balearic polish that adds emphasis to the lush lazy rare groove essence. Each one is a true treat: grab this limited re-release while you can!

We Wah Fifteen (Record Store Day 2014)
Hackney Colliery Band - "All Of The Light" (Scrimshire remix)
Henri-Pierre Noel - "Diskette" (The Reflex revision)
Review: Record Store Day Edition: Stand up Wah Wah Records who celebrate fifteen years of dropping science and here their 50th release which ties in nicely with that Record Store Day everyone has been talking about. Arriving on the heavy duty 7" that Wah Wah have made their name on, the A Side here sees Hackney Colliery Band's killer cover of Kanye West's "All Of The Lights" get a rather tasty remix from label honcho Scrimshire which makes a dancefloor favourite even more hotter. Wah Wah's dedication to reissues over these past 15 years is represented too with the excellent late 70s jazz funker "Diskette" from Henri-Pierre Noel keeping the B Side warm.

Outta My Head (feat John McCallum) (3:42)
Give Me Something Better (feat John McCallum - Werkha remix) (4:00)
Review: Northern collective The Haggis Horns have been at the forefront of the UK funk scene since they came to prominence as a horn section on the legendary album "Keb Darge Presents The New Mastersounds" in 2001. They then went on to form their own full band in 2004 and have three albums under their belt: "Hot Damn!", "Keep On Movin" (First Word Records) and recently released "What Comes To Mind" (Haggis Records). They've been rocking crowds the world over for years winning fans with their signature sound that crosses over with breakbeats, afrobeat, soul and hip-hop. The seven piece band call upon John McCallum on vocals and guitar for the absolute funk explosion that is "Outta My Head" while on the flip their track "Give Me Something Better" gets a lovely rework by Manchester's nu-jazz broken beat wunderkind Webkha.

Take It Back (feat Doc Brown) (3:28)
Take It Back (instrumental) (3:34)
Review: Hot on the heels of "Outta My Head / Give Me Something" the Haggis comeback is in full effect as they drop another sure-fire brass-blasting blunderbuss: "Take It Back" features slippery lyricism of writer/comedian/MC extraordinaire Doc Brown alongside their signature tight groove and rolling sense of playful funk. Loaded with an instrumental on the B, this one is guaranteed to sizzle your summer.

Half Sink - "Tsukimi" (4:29)
King Clyde - "Request Line" (5:08)
Dream Lovers - "For Belgian Friends" (6:24)
The Records We Never Made - "On A Whispered Way" (5:26)
Review: On this multi-artist bonanza, Aficionado owners Jason Boardman and Moonboots have decided to showcase contemporary talents from Manchester, in association with clothing brand Good Measure. Half Sink steps up first, gently unfurling the reverb-heavy guitar solos, booming bass and shuffling samba rhythms of "Tsukimi". King Clyde's loose, groovy and fuzzy "Request Line" is a bouncy disco-funk treat, while Dream Lovers' "For Belgian Friends" is an evocative chunk of meandering bliss. Arguably best of all, though, is "On A Whispered Way" by The Records We Never Made, a glistening, delay-heavy foray into cinematic, post-rock pastures. Clearly, Manchester's got (Balearic) talent.

Music Makes The World Go 'Round (4:14)
Music Makes The World Go 'Round (instrumental) (3:30)
Review: Numero's Hottest Sounds Around collection captures obscure late-70s grooves from the Greater Antilles. Trinidad's Stan Chaman's Semp label delivered Wilfred Luckie's quirky 'My Thing' and the Hamilton Brothers' calypso-disco hit 'Music Makes The World Go 'Round' in 1978. Meanwhile, across the sea, Frank Penn's G.B.I studio recorded Stephen Colebrook's Doobie Brothers-inspired 'Stay Away From Music,' appealing to cruise ship audiences. All three tracks are packaged in a custom Numero sleeve, echoing the design of Edward Seaga's influential Caribbean music label, WIRL (West Indies Records Ltd.). This compilation revives the vibrant, eclectic sounds of the late 70s, providing a fresh look at the music that once enlivened the Caribbean scene.

If You Ain't Got No Bread (You Might As Well Stay Home In Bed)
If You Ain't Got No Bread (You Might As Well Stay Home In Bed) (edit)
Review: "If You Ain't Got No Bread (You Might Aswell Stay At Home In Bed)" is a quirky R&B dancer with a story that we can all relate to - financial woe and unpaid bills. There's some great backing too, with an upfront drum kit and rasping brass section complementing the story with infectious riffs. As the original version begins with an elongated spoken intro which sees the landlord, car hire man and then girlfriend come knocking for cash, the label has kindly included an edited version which cuts straight to the chase for optimised club play potential.

Tere
Review: An Austin-based ten piece dedicated to Afrofunk fusion, Hard Proof are indeed hard proof that live funk continues to be one of the most fertile areas when it comes to big grooves and capacity to properly jam. Loose-yet-tight, direct-yet-faraway, organised-yet-chaotic, both "Dragon" and "Tere" showcase the band with great versatility and extremely detailed musicianship. The former is a swinging baritone sax led groove with cheeky Q&As and dreamy keys for added texture. "Tere", meanwhile, is a much jazzier and softer. Leaning more on the Afro side of the funk fence, it's happier to wallow in its mellowness, enticing you deeper into the groove with every horn harmony. Hard proof that some dragons don't need slaying!

Just A Little Bit Of Everything
Perdido Street
Review: With a CV that includes Fats Domino, BB King, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie and Tom Waits, Herb Hardesty is one of the greatest living sax players. And he's still nailing it at the grand old age of 88. Two new instrumentals, both "Just A Little Bit Of Everything" and "Perdido Street" rolls with an authentic jazzy swing that sings to all eras and decades. The former swoons and sways with a tightly plucked R&B motif while the latter is a more full frontal affair but heavy horn leads and beautiful bluesy piano twinkles. Awesome stuff.

Freedom
Tokyo Blue
Review: After dropping an album of drop-dead classic jazz, rock and latin fusion with the self-titled The Fusion Experience, this single brings the remixes to the fore with some great versions of album tracks plus an edit too. Ray Harris' original of Scaramunga sounds like a long lost relic from an undiscovered vault of jazz and freakbeat classics, like a fusion between Charles Mingus, The Doors and Tito Puente. The basic piano pattern stays the same while the rest of the band vamp around it, with Harris laying down some sick organ sounds over the top combined with layers of percussion. Lack of Afro's remix however strips everything down to the essentials, making the guitar and bass carry the riffs while more robust beats are craftily laid on top. His mix of Freedom is even more drastic, as he incorporates a more 4/4 disco swing to the drums, adds a cool breakdown similar to Dennis Coffey's Scorpio and then takes the tune into a cover of SOUL's Burning Spear!
Unexpected, but thoroughly cool.

With a further tune from Harris's album included here, the breezy Rotary Connection-influenced Tokyo Blue, this whole release is a great fusion of influences coming together. See how many you can spot?

Message Of Love (4:01)
Review: Finnish revivalist funk combo the Soul Investigators are no strangers to collaboration, having previously provided backing for Nicole Willis, Myron and Ernie Hawks. Here, they once again join forces with the latter for two more chunks of instrumental funk and soul goodness. A-side "Scorpio Walk" is the kind of cut that should come with its own named dance; a shuffling, mid-tempo funk affair that layers Spaghetti Western guitar solos and fluttering flute lines over a backing track rich in flanged guitar licks, bustling bass guitar and on-point drum breaks. Flipside "Message of Love" is an altogether deeper and more dewy-eyed affair, with woozy backing vocals and electric piano solos rising above a shuffling groove.
